The northern lights are produced when energetic charged particles excite oxygen and nitrogen in Earth’s upper atmosphere. The Sun’s solar wind supplies much of the incoming energy, while Earth’s magnetic environment stores, redirects and releases it toward polar regions. As excited gases return to lower-energy states, they emit light.
The color changes because different gases emit at different altitudes and under different particle conditions. Oxygen commonly produces green and red, nitrogen can produce blue and pink, and overlapping emissions can look purple, pink or white.
What causes the northern lights?
The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are a space-weather effect. They arise from the interaction of three parts of the Earth–Sun system: the solar wind, Earth’s magnetic environment and the upper atmosphere.
1. The Sun sends a continuous stream of particles
The Sun constantly releases the solar wind, a flow of electrically charged particles. Its strength and properties vary, so the energy available to Earth’s magnetic environment is not constant. Solar activity can make auroral displays more energetic and allow them to spread farther from the poles.

2. The solar wind meets Earth’s magnetic shield
Earth’s magnetosphere is the region dominated by our planet’s magnetic field. When the solar wind reaches it, energy can be transferred into the magnetic environment. Some of that energy is stored and later released, accelerating particles that are already moving within Earth’s magnetic system as well as particles associated with the solar wind. It is therefore too broad to say that every auroral particle simply comes directly from the Sun.
3. Magnetic field lines guide particles poleward
Earth’s magnetic field provides pathways that guide energetic particles toward the regions around the magnetic poles. That is why auroras are usually easiest to see at high latitudes. The same physics operates in the Southern Hemisphere, where the display is called the aurora australis.
4. Particles collide with atmospheric gases
As the particles travel down magnetic field lines, they enter the upper atmosphere. Collisions transfer energy to oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules, leaving those gases in excited energy states.
5. The gases release light
Excited gases do not remain in those higher-energy states. When they return to lower-energy states, they release the excess energy as light. The wavelength of that light—and therefore its apparent color—depends on which gas emitted it, the altitude of the emission and the energy delivered by the incoming particles.
“Think of the atmosphere as a giant neon sign,” said Rafael Mesquita, an atmospheric scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, who studies the connection between the atmosphere and magnetosphere. “When charged particles flow into the atmosphere along the magnetic field lines, they ‘power up’ the gases in the sky, causing them to glow — much like how electricity excites the gases inside the tubes of a neon sign.”
Mesquita’s comparison is an analogy, but it captures the essential sequence: charged particles provide the energy, and atmospheric gases emit the visible glow.

Why are the northern lights usually near the poles?
The magnetic field does not distribute incoming particles evenly over the planet. Its field lines funnel many of the particles toward the two magnetic polar regions, forming the usual auroral zones. A viewer at a high latitude is therefore more likely to be beneath an active auroral region than someone near the equator.
This is a tendency, not an absolute boundary. When solar-driven disturbances are strong, the auroral region can expand equatorward and become visible at lower latitudes. The boundary moves because the amount of energy in the magnetosphere and the paths followed by energetic particles are changing.
“Northern lights” refers specifically to the northern display. The broader phenomenon is the aurora, with the southern counterpart known as the aurora australis. Both are generated by the same basic particle–magnetosphere–atmosphere process.
What makes the aurora green, red, blue or pink?
Color is primarily a clue to the emitting gas and the altitude at which that gas is glowing. NASA’s guide gives these approximate ranges; they are useful physical regions, not sharp borders. Atmospheric density changes gradually with height, and a single line of sight can pass through several emitting layers.
| Visible appearance | Main emitter | Approximate emission altitude |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Oxygen | About 100–200 km (60–120 miles) |
| Red | Oxygen | Above about 200 km (120 miles) |
| Blue | Nitrogen | Roughly 100–200 km (60–120 miles) |
| Pink | Nitrogen | Below about 100 km (60 miles) |
NASA identifies green as the most common auroral color and associates it with oxygen excited around 100 km above Earth’s surface. The ranges in the table should not be treated as exact cutoffs: NASA pages summarize them somewhat differently, and real auroral layers overlap.

Green is the color most people associate with the aurora. It is produced by excited oxygen in the middle part of the auroral region. Because this emission is common and comparatively bright, it often forms the dominant curtains or arcs visible to the unaided eye.

Red: oxygen at greater height
Red also comes from oxygen, but it is associated with higher parts of the upper atmosphere. The air is thinner there, so the emission can appear as a high red fringe or a diffuse red field above greener structures. A red region does not mean that a different event is occurring; it indicates oxygen glowing under different altitude and excitation conditions.
Blue and pink: nitrogen’s contribution
Nitrogen contributes blue and pink light. Blue is associated with nitrogen emissions in the middle auroral region, while pink is associated with nitrogen emission lower down. These colors can be less obvious to unaided observers than green, especially when the display is faint.
Purple, mixed pink and white
Visible auroral colors are not always single-gas labels. Emission from oxygen and nitrogen can overlap along the same line of sight. The combined light may be perceived as purple, pink or white, depending on the relative brightness of each component. A bright purple edge, for example, does not identify one precise altitude by itself; it may be a mixture of neighboring emissions.

The display changes whenever the incoming particle energy, the particles’ paths or the location of their atmospheric collisions changes. Solar-wind conditions vary continuously, and the magnetosphere can store and release energy in changing amounts. Those changes alter which particles reach the atmosphere and how deeply they penetrate.
Particle energy changes the emitting region
Particles with different energies can reach different altitudes before losing energy in collisions. A shift in the energy distribution can therefore strengthen one color while weakening another. More energy reaching a lower region can increase nitrogen-related blue or pink emissions; energy deposited higher in the atmosphere can make red oxygen emissions more noticeable. The gases are still the same, but the balance of emitted light changes.
Emission layers move and overlap
Auroral bands and curtains are not fixed objects painted onto the sky. Their emitting regions move as magnetic field lines and particle flows change. Layers can brighten, fade, fold and overlap along the viewer’s line of sight. The resulting color may change from green to pink, purple or white even when no single gas suddenly switches identity.

Solar activity changes the viewing zone
Stronger solar-driven disturbances put more energy into Earth’s magnetic environment. The auroral zone can then expand toward lower latitudes, while weaker conditions keep the most visible activity closer to the magnetic poles. This is why a location that normally sees no aurora can occasionally see one during a major space-weather event, while a high-latitude observer may see displays of very different intensity on different nights.
Can a color tell you the exact altitude?
No. Color provides a useful physical clue, but it is not an altitude meter. The NASA ranges are approximate, atmospheric conditions vary, and emissions from several gases can overlap. A green patch generally points to oxygen emission in the middle auroral region, while red often indicates higher oxygen emission, but a photograph or visual observation alone cannot establish an exact height.
Brightness matters too. A faint color may be present but difficult for human vision to distinguish, whereas a camera can record it more clearly. The apparent hue can also be altered by exposure, image processing and the mixture of emissions in the field of view. Use photographs to document the display, not as a precise measurement of altitude or particle energy.
How to interpret an aurora display
- Mostly green arcs or curtains: oxygen emission is dominating the visible light in the common middle-altitude region.
- Red above green: higher-altitude oxygen emission is visible at the top of the display or in a diffuse background.
- Blue or pink edges: nitrogen emission is contributing, often in a lower part of the auroral structure.
- Purple, white or blended pink: oxygen and nitrogen emissions overlap, or one component is being mixed with another along the line of sight.
- A rapid change in brightness or position: particle input and magnetic conditions are changing; the auroral zone itself is dynamic.
These interpretations describe likely contributors, not rigid classifications. The same display can contain several colors and emission altitudes at once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What controls when the lights are visible?
Visibility depends on current space-weather conditions and on whether the auroral zone reaches the observer’s latitude. High-latitude regions are the usual viewing areas because of the magnetic-field geometry. During stronger activity, the zone can extend farther equatorward. Conditions can change over short periods, so a past sighting or a typical local pattern does not guarantee what will appear on a particular night.
The northern lights are also only one half of a global phenomenon. When the relevant magnetic and particle conditions occur in the south, observers see the aurora australis rather than the aurora borealis. The two names identify geography, not different underlying physics.

Common misconceptions about the northern lights
They are not sunlight reflected from snow or clouds
The colors are emitted by excited atmospheric gases. Snow, clouds and other surfaces can reflect light from an aurora, but reflection is not the source of the aurora itself.
They are not a single beam of light at one height
A visible display can include oxygen and nitrogen emissions at several altitudes. Curtains and arcs may look like flat shapes from the ground, but they are three-dimensional regions of glowing atmosphere.
Every visible color is not a separate event
Mixed emissions can create secondary perceived colors. Purple, pink and white may result from overlapping oxygen and nitrogen light rather than from a newly introduced gas.

“Northern” does not mean only the far north
High latitudes are favored, but strong disturbances can push auroral activity toward lower latitudes. The relevant boundary is the changing auroral zone, not a fixed geographic line.
The short explanation
The Sun’s solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetosphere, which guides energized particles toward the polar upper atmosphere. Collisions excite oxygen and nitrogen, and those gases emit light as they relax. Oxygen commonly makes green and red; nitrogen contributes blue and pink. Because particle energy, altitude and overlap change, the aurora continually shifts in brightness, shape and color.
