The northern lights—also called the aurora borealis—are produced when energetic particles guided by Earth’s magnetic field collide with oxygen and nitrogen high in the atmosphere. The glowing display seen from the ground is not considered a direct physical danger to people. The larger space-weather storm that can create a bright aurora can, however, disrupt satellites, radio, navigation and power systems, with additional exposure concerns for astronauts and some high-altitude polar flights.
What the northern lights are
“Northern lights” and “aurora borealis” describe the same phenomenon: a changing light display concentrated around the Northern Hemisphere’s magnetic polar region. The lights are an atmospheric effect of space weather, not a beam of radiation traveling down to observers.
The visible glow forms roughly 80–500 kilometers above Earth’s surface, according to NOAA’s National Weather Service Space Weather Prediction Center. That altitude is far above commercial aircraft and vastly above the level where people watch from the ground.

1. The Sun supplies charged particles
The solar wind is a continuous flow of charged particles from the Sun. At times, the Sun ejects much larger clouds of plasma in coronal mass ejections (CMEs). When a CME reaches Earth, it can disturb the planet’s magnetic environment and produce a geomagnetic storm.

2. Earth’s magnetic field guides the energy
Earth’s magnetic field deflects much of the incoming solar-wind energy and channels energized particles toward regions around the magnetic poles. This is why auroras usually appear in an oval around the Arctic rather than uniformly across the sky.
3. Electrons collide with upper-atmosphere gases
Electrons accelerated in the magnetosphere travel along magnetic-field lines and collide with oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere. Those collisions transfer energy to the atmospheric particles, putting them into excited states.
4. The gases release light
As the excited oxygen and nitrogen return to lower-energy states, they emit light. NOAA compares the process with a neon light: an electrical discharge energizes gas, and the gas glows as it releases that energy. Moving curtains, arcs and rays are the changing patterns of particle precipitation and magnetic activity, not solid objects flying overhead.

Why auroras have different colors
Color depends on which atmospheric gas is excited and on the conditions of the interaction. Oxygen and nitrogen are responsible for the familiar range of auroral colors. The atmosphere is not chemically identical at every altitude, and particle energy varies during a storm, so a display can shift in color and brightness from minute to minute.

Color alone is not a reliable measure of danger or storm intensity. A vivid display means that the upper atmosphere is receiving energy, but it does not tell a ground observer whether local power, communications or other infrastructure is at risk.
Are the northern lights dangerous to people on the ground?
For an ordinary observer watching from the surface, the visible lights are not described by NASA or NOAA as a direct physical hazard. NASA Science states: “They do not cause direct harm to anyone on Earth, however, as our planet’s magnetic field and atmosphere protect us from the worst of these storms.” The atmosphere and magnetic field provide the shielding that keeps the most energetic solar-storm effects from reaching people at ground level.
That answer applies to viewing the aurora itself. It does not mean that every consequence of a severe solar storm is harmless, nor that the intensity of a display can be used as a safety signal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPeople who may face additional exposure concerns
NOAA identifies astronauts and people flying at high altitudes in high latitudes as having additional health considerations during severe space-weather events. At those altitudes and locations, shielding is reduced compared with the protection available at Earth’s surface. Aviation operators and space agencies use space-weather alerts and operational procedures to manage that risk.

What risks can the storm create indirectly?
The geomagnetic storm associated with an aurora can disturb technology and infrastructure. Effects depend on the storm’s strength, the design and location of equipment, the electrical properties of local ground, and the precautions taken by operators. A visible aurora does not make any one outcome inevitable.
| System | Possible effect during significant space weather | What this means for a viewer |
|---|---|---|
| Electric grids | Geomagnetically induced currents can stress transmission networks; an extreme storm can damage high-voltage transformers. | The risk concerns infrastructure and grid operations, not the light entering your eyes. |
| Satellites | Radiation and changes in the upper atmosphere can interfere with spacecraft electronics, communications or orbit predictions. | Satellite services may degrade even while the aurora remains a beautiful visual display. |
| Radio communications | Ionospheric disturbances can disrupt or degrade some radio links. | Effects vary by frequency, route and storm conditions. |
| GPS and other GNSS navigation | Changes in the ionosphere can reduce positioning accuracy or availability. | Navigation reliability can change without any direct hazard from the aurora itself. |
These are event-dependent operational risks. NOAA’s space-weather material does not support treating every aurora as evidence of a damaging storm, and it does not establish a percentage probability that an individual ground observer will be harmed.
Do not confuse the related space-weather terms
| Term | What it means | Relationship to an aurora |
|---|---|---|
| Solar wind | The ongoing stream of charged particles flowing from the Sun. | Supplies energy that can interact with Earth’s magnetosphere. |
| Solar flare | A sudden burst of electromagnetic energy from the Sun. | Can accompany other solar activity, but it is not the aurora itself. |
| Coronal mass ejection (CME) | A large eruption of solar plasma. | Can reach Earth and trigger a geomagnetic storm. |
| Geomagnetic storm | A disturbance of Earth’s magnetic environment caused by incoming solar activity. | Can intensify auroras and produce technological effects. |
| Aurora | Light emitted by excited atmospheric gases after energetic particles collide with them. | One visible atmospheric result of the chain above. |
A flare, CME, geomagnetic storm and aurora are therefore related but not interchangeable terms. A forecast of one does not automatically describe the others or establish conditions at your exact location.

Geomagnetic activity and the Kp index
NOAA’s Kp index runs from 0 to 9 and indicates the level of geomagnetic activity relevant to aurora viewing. Higher activity can make an aurora brighter and allow it to extend farther from the magnetic poles. Kp is a regional indicator, not a guarantee that a display will appear above one particular town.
Even with a high forecast, you need to be under or near the auroral oval at the right time. A lower Kp can still produce a worthwhile view at a favorable high-latitude site, while a high Kp can disappoint if clouds or daylight block the sky.
Latitude, horizon and darkness
Choose a location with an unobstructed view toward the pole appropriate to your hemisphere. Get away from city light pollution, allow your eyes time to adapt to darkness, and avoid bright screens while scanning the sky. A clear, open horizon gives you a better chance of seeing low arcs that may otherwise be hidden by hills, buildings or trees.

Clouds and local weather
Auroral activity above the clouds cannot be seen through an overcast sky. Check a current local cloud forecast as well as a current space-weather forecast. The two forecasts answer different questions: one describes whether the sky is transparent, and the other describes whether the magnetosphere is active.

Why a phone camera may show more than your eyes
NASA expert Emily Furfaro explained in a March 26, 2025 NASA interview that smartphone cameras can be more sensitive than human vision for faint aurora. A long-exposure image may record color that is difficult to see directly. That does not mean the camera has detected a dangerous radiation level; it is simply collecting light for longer and processing it differently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical, safe viewing procedure
- Check a live source. Use current NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center alerts and viewing guidance for the latest geomagnetic outlook. An evergreen explanation cannot tell you whether an event is happening tonight.
- Pick a dark, safe site. Favor a legal public area or other place where you can park and walk safely, away from traffic, cliffs, unstable ice, fast water and private property.
- Confirm the sky. Check cloud cover, precipitation, fog and moonlight. Clear conditions matter as much as geomagnetic activity.
- Face an open horizon. At northern latitudes, a clear northern view is often useful; during stronger storms, the display may appear in other directions as the auroral oval expands.
- Protect your night vision. Dim your phone, use a red-light mode if available, and give your eyes several minutes to adjust.
- Use a camera as a supplement. Stabilize the phone on a solid surface, use its night mode when appropriate, and do not step into an unsafe area while trying to frame a picture.
- Follow event-specific instructions. During an unusual severe space-weather event, follow current guidance from aviation authorities, employers, local officials or other responsible operators. Do not infer safety from the color or brightness of the display.
Common misconceptions and how to avoid them
“The particles are hitting people below.”
No. The light comes from collisions in the upper atmosphere. Earth’s magnetic field guides many energized particles toward polar regions, while the atmosphere and magnetic field protect people at the surface from the worst solar-storm effects.
“A bright aurora means my local power grid will fail.”
No. Grid effects depend on storm strength, local geology, network design and operational measures. A bright display is not a forecast of a particular outage.
“A high Kp guarantees a show.”
No. Kp describes geomagnetic activity, but clouds, daylight, light pollution, latitude and timing still determine what an observer can see.
“The aurora is the same thing as a solar flare.”
No. A flare is an eruption of electromagnetic energy; an aurora is light emitted by atmospheric gases after particle collisions. A CME and the geomagnetic storm it can cause are additional parts of the space-weather chain.
What to do if a severe event is forecast
For most people on the ground, the sensible response is information and ordinary situational awareness, not avoidance of the sky. Check current NOAA alerts, keep essential navigation or communications options available if your work depends on them, and follow instructions from the operators of aircraft, spacecraft, power systems or other critical services. Do not treat this general article as a real-time warning: space-weather conditions change, and only a current alert can describe an active event.
The bottom line on beauty and risk
The northern lights are a visible sign of energy moving through the Sun–Earth system: solar particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, travel toward polar regions and excite oxygen and nitrogen high above the surface. Watching that light from a safe location on the ground is not considered a direct physical danger. The associated geomagnetic storm can still challenge technology and create special exposure concerns for astronauts and some high-altitude polar flights, so the appropriate distinction is between the harmless-to-view glow and the broader, potentially disruptive space-weather event that produces it.
