Most strange-looking clouds are familiar cloud genera, attached features, optical effects, or aircraft condensation trails. Their unusual appearance usually records how air is rising, sinking, mixing with moisture, flowing over terrain, or freezing—not an exotic cause. To identify one, start with its shape, then check its altitude, surroundings, movement and persistence. A photograph alone is often insufficient.

Start with structure, not the name

The World Meteorological Organization’s International Cloud Atlas is the global standard for cloud definitions. Its system begins with broad forms: wispy filaments, a fairly uniform veil, separate heaps, or clouds with substantial vertical growth. Identification then becomes more precise by adding a supplementary feature, such as pouches hanging from a cloud base, or an optical effect produced by sunlight and ice crystals.

Use this order when examining an unfamiliar cloud:

  1. Describe the outline and texture. Is it a smooth lens, a rippling underside, rounded pouches, a clean hole, a colored ring, or a straight line?
  2. Locate it in context. Is it beneath a thunderstorm anvil, near a mountain ridge, inside a thin high-level veil, or exactly along an aircraft route?
  3. Watch it. Note whether it drifts, changes shape, dissipates quickly, widens downwind, or remains almost stationary.
  4. Separate cloud from light. A halo or corona is an optical effect involving cloud particles or ice crystals, not a separate cloud type.
  5. Use weather information independently. A striking cloud can indicate an interesting atmospheric environment without being a reliable warning of severe weather.

Cloud height, scale and wind direction are difficult to judge from a single image. Treat a photo-only identification as “likely” unless the surrounding conditions confirm it.

Quick comparison of the main unusual formations

What you see Most likely feature Useful context What it does not prove
Rounded pouches hanging beneath a cloud, often an anvil Mammatus Frequently associated with cumulonimbus and turbulent air around an anvil It is not a tornado sign and does not itself create severe weather
Smooth, almond- or saucer-shaped cloud, sometimes stacked Lenticular cloud Often near or downwind of a mountain ridge; may form where air rises over flatter terrain It is not an aircraft or evidence of anything extraterrestrial
Undulating underside resembling waves or a rough sea Asperitas Usually a low-to-middle cloud feature; often observed with unstable or convective conditions The feature itself does not produce rain, and its exact formation process is unsettled
Thin line beginning behind an aircraft, later persisting or spreading Contrail Exhaust water vapor freezes or condenses in cold air; humidity and upper winds control its lifetime Persistence is not evidence of chemical spraying
Rounded opening in a thin cloud sheet, sometimes with ice falling below Hole-punch or fallstreak hole Supercooled droplets freeze, grow ice and descend; an aircraft can help initiate the disturbance It is not necessarily a break caused by a large object
Pearly or iridescent cloud high above ordinary weather clouds Nacreous cloud Rare, very high polar-stratospheric cloud, especially visible around twilight It is not the same thing as ordinary low-cloud iridescence
Thin bluish-white waves visible against a dark twilight sky Noctilucent cloud Extremely high cloud seen mainly in polar and high-latitude twilight It is not a normal tropospheric cloud genus
Ring, small colored circle or bright patch near the Sun or Moon Halo, corona or iridescence Refraction or diffraction by ice crystals or cloud droplets The colored pattern is not itself a separate cloud formation

Mammatus: the pouch-shaped underside

Mammatus consists of smooth, rounded lobes that hang from the underside of a cloud. The feature is most familiar beneath the projecting anvil of a cumulonimbus, although it can occur with several cloud types. The pouches reflect sinking motions and the way temperature and moisture vary beneath or within the cloud.

Because mammatus often appears with a large thunderstorm, it can look ominous. The important distinction is that the pouches are an associated feature, not the engine of the storm. They can accompany severe or non-severe thunderstorms, and the feature itself does not produce severe weather. The nearby storm may still contain dangerous lightning, hail, damaging wind or flooding, so use an official warning rather than the appearance of the pouches to judge risk.

Lenticular clouds: the “flying saucer” shape

A lenticular cloud is smooth, rounded or oval and lens-shaped. Several can appear stacked like plates. The classic setting is near or on the lee side of a mountain ridge, where air flowing over terrain forms standing-wave patterns. A cloud can form in the rising portion of a wave while the air continues moving through it, making the cloud seem fixed even as the wind is strong.

Terrain is a strong clue, not an absolute requirement. Rising air over relatively flat terrain can also create a lenticular form. Look for a smooth edge, little internal texture and a position aligned with the wind and nearby relief. Its saucer-like silhouette explains the popular nickname, but it is an ordinary atmospheric cloud form.

Asperitas: a sea-like, rippled base

Asperitas has a deeply corrugated underside that resembles a rough ocean viewed from below. The waves may be broad and dark or sharply folded, with light passing between the undulations. The Met Office gives a typical cloud-base range of 4,000–10,000 feet; that is a descriptive range, not a universal boundary.

The mechanism remains unresolved. Proposed explanations include links to convective storms and a process in which mammatus-like sinking air interacts with winds that change direction with height. These are hypotheses, not a settled cause. The World Meteorological Organization accepted asperitas as a classification at its 17th Congress in 2015, while the World Meteorological Organization’s Atlas description notes that the host cloud type has not yet been fully defined.

Asperitas itself does not produce rain. Nearby unstable clouds can bring showers or storms, so check radar and warnings instead of treating the ripples as a forecast signal.

Contrails: why some aircraft trails vanish and others spread

A contrail is a narrow cloud that begins along an aircraft’s flight path. Jet exhaust contains water vapor; in very cold air, that vapor condenses and freezes into tiny ice particles. The trail may disappear within seconds, remain as a thin line, or widen into a broad streak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The surrounding atmosphere controls the difference. If the air is relatively dry, the ice particles evaporate and the trail fades. If the air at cruise altitude is humid enough, the particles persist. Winds aloft then shear and spread the trail, sometimes producing long bands or crosshatched patterns as flight paths intersect. A persistent contrail can therefore reveal a moist layer high in the atmosphere, but its length is not a direct measure of the weather at the ground.

Persistence alone is not evidence of chemical spraying. The condensation and ice formation described above are sufficient to produce both short-lived and spreading trails under different humidity and wind conditions.

Hole-punch and fallstreak holes

A hole-punch cloud is a nearly circular opening in a thin cloud deck. A pale column or streak of falling ice may hang from the center, which is why the feature is also called a fallstreak hole.

Many thin decks contain supercooled liquid droplets: water that remains liquid below the usual freezing point. Once some droplets freeze, ice grows efficiently by drawing vapor from nearby liquid droplets. The growing crystals become heavy enough to fall, leaving a circular gap and a descending streak. An aircraft’s passage can disturb the air and provide a trigger, but the process can also begin without a visible aircraft. The hole is therefore a microphysical event in a cloud layer, not simply an opening cut through it.

Nacreous and noctilucent clouds: exceptionally high layers

Nacreous clouds

Nacreous clouds are rare, very high clouds with pearly or iridescent colors. They are especially noticeable after sunset or before sunrise, when the lower atmosphere is dark but the high cloud is still illuminated. The National Weather Service glossary places them approximately 25–30 kilometers above Earth. Their altitude and distinctive light separate them from ordinary iridescence seen in much lower, thin clouds.

Noctilucent clouds

Noctilucent clouds are thin, wavy, bluish-white structures visible during twilight, particularly at high latitudes. The same glossary gives an approximate altitude of 80–90 kilometers. They form far above the troposphere where most familiar weather clouds occur, so they should be treated as a different high-atmosphere phenomenon rather than an unusual variety of cirrus.

Halos, coronas and iridescence are light effects

A bright ring around the Sun or Moon is usually a halo produced when light is refracted through ice crystals, commonly in cirrostratus. A corona is a smaller, often colored ring created by diffraction through cloud particles; it is frequently seen when a thin altocumulus patch passes in front of the Sun or Moon. Iridescence appears as shifting pastel patches in thin cloud near the Sun.

These effects can identify the particles and geometry in a cloud, but they are not cloud genera. Never look directly at the Sun to inspect one; view the pattern through a safe obstruction or from a shaded position.

A practical identification procedure

  1. Record the visual clue. Write a neutral description before choosing a label: “smooth stacked lenses,” “pouches under an anvil,” “round hole in a thin deck,” or “straight line behind an aircraft.”
  2. Check the surroundings. Look for a mountain ridge, a thunderstorm anvil, a broad thin veil, other nearby cloud layers and a recent aircraft passage.
  3. Estimate relative height. Compare the cloud with known landmarks and other clouds, but avoid claiming an exact altitude from a photograph unless an instrument or official observation supplies it.
  4. Observe for several minutes. A stationary-looking lenticular cloud, a contrail that expands downwind and a fast-changing storm base have different implications.
  5. Compare with an official description. The WMO Atlas and national weather-service glossaries use defined terms and help prevent confusing a supplementary feature with a cloud genus.
  6. State uncertainty honestly. If the image hides scale, wind direction or nearby weather, give two plausible identifications and explain what additional observation would distinguish them.

Common identification mistakes

  • Calling every pouch a mammatus storm warning. The feature can occur with non-severe clouds and does not predict a tornado.
  • Assuming every saucer cloud is over a mountain. Terrain is common, but rising air over flatter ground can also support a lenticular cloud.
  • Treating asperitas as a rain cloud. Its rippled structure does not itself generate precipitation.
  • Using contrail duration as proof of spraying. Ambient humidity and wind explain why trails persist and spread.
  • Confusing a halo with a cloud. The ring is produced by light interacting with crystals, usually in a thin ice-cloud layer.
  • Identifying from shape alone. Scale, altitude, motion and context are essential; a dramatic photograph can omit all four.

What unusual clouds can—and cannot—tell you about weather

Cloud shapes are evidence of atmospheric processes. They can show that air is rising over terrain, that a thunderstorm has a projecting anvil, that a high layer is humid enough to preserve ice trails, or that supercooled droplets are freezing in a thin deck. They are not, by themselves, a complete forecast.

For immediate decisions, use local government weather alerts, radar and forecasts. If mammatus appears near a storm, move indoors for lightning and follow warnings. If a lenticular cloud forms near a mountain, pilots and hikers should rely on aviation or mountain-weather information rather than the cloud’s attractive appearance. If an unusual cloud is overhead but no warning is issued, continue normal observation while remaining attentive to changing official guidance.

Where to learn the terminology

The WMO International Cloud Atlas provides the worldwide definitions. NOAA and the National Weather Service publish cloud-classification pages, glossaries and explanatory material on cloud forms, optical effects, contrails and fallstreak holes. NOAA also points readers to a free cloud book for systematic practice. A paid field guide is optional; the most useful habit is to pair a visual description with time, direction, terrain and weather context.
