Solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are powered by energy stored in the Sun’s magnetic field. Motion in the solar atmosphere and beneath it continually twists and stresses magnetic fields in active regions. When those fields rapidly rearrange through magnetic reconnection, stored magnetic energy is transferred to the surrounding plasma. The release can produce a flare, accelerate particles and, in some eruptions, launch a CME.
A flare is primarily a sudden burst of radiation and energetic particles. A CME is a huge moving cloud of magnetized solar plasma. They often occur together because they arise from the same magnetic activity, but neither event is simply another name for the other: CMEs can happen without an observed flare, and many flares do not send a CME toward Earth.
The Sun’s magnetic field is the energy source
The Sun is not powered by a chemical fuel that occasionally burns explosively at its surface. NASA’s solar-flare explanations specifically rule out a particular metal or chemical as the trigger. The relevant energy is magnetic energy in the Sun’s outer atmosphere, where electrically conducting plasma and magnetic fields continually influence one another.

A useful mental picture is a twisted elastic band that snaps toward a lower-tension shape. NASA uses a similar analogy, but it is only an analogy: solar plasma is governed by magnetohydrodynamics, not by a literal rubber band. The field and plasma interact across enormous scales, and the detailed physics of how an eruption starts and develops remains an active research subject.
Magnetic reconnection releases the stored energy
Magnetic reconnection is the central release process. In a simplified description, oppositely directed magnetic fields are brought together in a thin region. The field’s connectivity changes, and magnetic energy is converted into rapid plasma motion, heat and particle acceleration. The process can happen quickly compared with the long period during which the field was being stressed.
NASA’s Heliophysics Big Idea 3.1 summarizes the mechanism this way: “Magnetic reconnection is a rapid transfer of magnetic energy into motion that powers solar flares and coronal mass ejections.” NASA solar physicist Dr. Jonathon Cirtain gave the related formulation in a NASA chat transcript dated October 27, 2011: “It is generally agreed that solar flares are caused when the solar atmospheric magnetic field undergoes a relaxation process called magnetic reconnection.”

Those statements describe the established core idea, not every detail of an eruption. Scientists continue to investigate how reconnection begins, how fast it proceeds, how particles are accelerated and why some stressed magnetic configurations produce a CME while others produce mainly radiation.
What causes a solar flare?
A solar flare is an abrupt release of energy that appears as a bright burst of electromagnetic radiation. The radiation can cover a broad range of wavelengths, and the same magnetic release can accelerate energetic particles. The flare is therefore an energy-and-radiation event, even though hot plasma and particles accompany it.

How flare strength is classified
NASA’s standard flare classification uses the letters A, B, C, M and X. Each successive letter represents a tenfold increase in the measured strength range. A class is a category, not a complete description of the event’s duration, location or consequences. The number attached to the letter indicates the flare’s position within that class.
NASA also describes the sensor-saturating X28 flare recorded in 2003. That is a historical report about an exceptional event and should not be treated as a current record claim or as a prediction of what the Sun will produce next.
What a flare does at the Sun
During reconnection, part of the stored magnetic energy rapidly becomes heat, motion and energetic particles. The heated material emits intense radiation. If the flare is located on the Earth-facing side of the Sun, its radiation can reach the planet and disturb the ionosphere, the electrically active region of the upper atmosphere. Such disturbances can interfere with radio communications, especially at frequencies and locations affected by the altered ionosphere.
Flare radiation travels at the speed of light. NASA describes its effects as becoming apparent at Earth in about eight minutes, the approximate light-travel time from the Sun. That timing is fundamentally different from the arrival of material in a CME.
What causes a coronal mass ejection?
A coronal mass ejection is a gigantic cloud of solar plasma and embedded magnetic field launched into space. It is not merely the visible flash of a flare. The CME carries matter and magnetic structure away from the Sun, and its subsequent path and speed determine whether it encounters Earth or another body.

How large and fast can a CME be?
NASA has described a large CME as containing about a billion tons of matter and being accelerated to several million miles per hour. Those figures set the scale of a large event; they are not defining values for every CME. Individual eruptions differ greatly in mass, speed, angular width and magnetic orientation.

The cloud can expand as it travels. Its embedded magnetic field remains important because the field’s orientation relative to Earth’s magnetic field helps determine how strongly the two systems couple when the CME arrives.
How flares and CMEs are related—and how they differ
Flares and CMEs commonly occur during the same episode of magnetic restructuring. Reconnection can release radiation and energetic particles while also helping drive an outward-moving plasma eruption. This association is why images and news reports often show a flare and a CME together.
They are nevertheless distinct phenomena. A flare can occur without a CME, and a CME can occur without a prominent flare. A flare’s radiation spreads outward from its source at light speed; a CME is a physical cloud moving through interplanetary space. A flare on the Earth-facing side can affect Earth even when no CME is directed at us. Conversely, a CME launched away from Earth can be magnetically powerful without producing a geomagnetic storm here.
| Comparison | Solar flare | Coronal mass ejection |
|---|---|---|
| What is released | A sudden burst of electromagnetic energy and energetic particles | A huge cloud of solar plasma carrying an embedded magnetic field |
| Primary cause | Rapid magnetic-energy release through reconnection | Magnetic restructuring and eruption that expels magnetized plasma |
| How it travels | Radiation travels at light speed; particles have different speeds | A moving, expanding plasma cloud with event-dependent speed |
| Must it be aimed at Earth? | Radiation from an Earth-facing location can reach Earth | Yes. Geomagnetic effects require an Earth-directed trajectory and effective magnetic coupling |
| Typical arrival timing | About eight minutes for the radiation to become apparent at Earth | Geomagnetic effects may arrive one or several days later, depending on the event and path |
| Main Earth effects | Ionospheric disturbance, including possible radio-communication interference | Geomagnetic disturbances, auroras and possible effects on satellites, communications, navigation and power systems |
How an eruption unfolds
- Magnetic fields are stressed. Plasma motion in an active region contorts the field and stores energy in a configuration that is more complex than a quiet state.
- The configuration becomes unstable or reconnects. Field lines can rapidly change their connections in a reconnection region. This is the transition from gradual energy storage to rapid release.
- Energy is partitioned. Some energy heats plasma, some accelerates particles and some drives bulk motion. The balance differs from event to event.
- A flare may brighten. The sudden radiation burst is the flare signature. Its class reflects measured intensity, not whether a CME exists.
- A CME may be launched. If the magnetic structure and surrounding conditions support an eruption, a large cloud of plasma and magnetic field is expelled into space.
- The disturbance propagates. Radiation arrives first. A CME continues through the solar wind, where its speed, direction and magnetic orientation evolve before any encounter with Earth.
Why only some eruptions affect Earth
The Sun sends radiation in all directions, but the practical impact of a flare depends strongly on where it occurs. A flare on the Earth-facing side has a direct line of sight to our planet; a flare on the far side does not illuminate Earth’s ionosphere in the same way. Energetic particles can follow more complicated magnetic paths, so their arrival is not identical to the flare-radiation timing.

CMEs can also travel in any direction. Only an Earth-directed CME can reach Earth, and direction alone does not determine the severity of the result. The cloud’s speed, size, density and magnetic orientation matter. When the CME’s magnetic field interacts efficiently with Earth’s magnetosphere, energy can enter the near-Earth environment and drive a geomagnetic disturbance.
How long does it take to see an effect?
Flare radiation: minutes
Light from a flare takes roughly eight minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth. A radio or ionospheric effect can therefore begin soon after the flare is observed, subject to the flare’s location, intensity and the part of the ionosphere involved.
CME effects: one or several days
A CME is much slower than light. NASA describes geomagnetic effects as potentially occurring one or several days after the eruption. The range reflects differences in launch speed and trajectory, as well as the time required for the cloud to interact with the solar wind and Earth’s magnetic environment. A forecasted CME arrival is consequently a window, not a guaranteed minute-by-minute schedule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when a CME reaches Earth?
Earth’s magnetosphere deflects much of the solar wind and helps protect the surface. A CME can compress and disturb that magnetic shield, driving currents and waves through near-Earth space. One visible result can be an aurora, produced when energetic particles guide energy into the upper atmosphere near the polar regions.

The same geomagnetic disturbance can create operational problems for technology. Satellites may experience charging, drag changes or radiation-related anomalies; navigation and radio systems can be disrupted; and long conductors such as power-grid lines can experience unwanted induced currents. These are space-weather hazards, not ordinary weather at ground level.

People on the ground receive substantial protection from Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field, so the primary concern for most of the population is the reliability of technological systems rather than direct exposure to the flare or CME itself. Spacecraft, astronauts and high-altitude operations face a less protected environment.
How often do these events happen?
Activity changes over the approximately 11-year solar cycle. During solar maximum, NASA has reported that the Sun may produce several CMEs per day, along with a few truly massive explosions per year. This is a broad cycle-phase estimate attributed to Antti Pulkkinen, director of NASA Goddard’s Heliophysics Science Division, in a 2022 NASA article. It is not a forecast for a particular date, and the number of events does not indicate how many will be directed at Earth.
Solar minimum generally brings fewer active-region eruptions, while maximum brings more opportunities for stressed magnetic fields to reconnect. Even during an active phase, the strength, direction and Earth impact of individual events remain variable.

Observatories can detect brightening, magnetic changes and an outward-moving CME. Measurements of the eruption’s speed and direction help estimate whether and when it might reach Earth. Once a CME is observed leaving the Sun, models can refine an arrival window and assess the likely level of geomagnetic activity.
Prediction is not perfect because the magnetic structure can evolve during transit, and the orientation that ultimately couples to Earth’s magnetosphere is difficult to determine far from the planet. The basic magnetic-reconnection explanation is well established, but the onset and detailed dynamics of individual eruptions remain subjects of ongoing study. A warning therefore communicates probability and expected conditions, not certainty that every flare will produce a storm.
Common misunderstandings
- “A flare and a CME are the same event.” No. A flare is a radiation and energy burst; a CME is an expelled plasma-and-magnetic-field cloud.
- “Every flare launches a CME.” No. Some flares occur without a CME.
- “Every CME follows a flare.” No. CMEs can occur without an observed flare.
- “Any large CME hits Earth.” No. The CME must be directed toward Earth, and its magnetic orientation controls how strongly it couples to the magnetosphere.
- “A powerful flare immediately sends a plasma cloud to Earth.” Flare radiation arrives in about eight minutes; CME-related geomagnetic effects generally take one or several days.
- “Solar flares are chemical explosions.” Their energy comes from stressed magnetic fields and reconnection in the solar atmosphere, not combustion.
The essential takeaway
Solar flares and CMEs begin with the same broad story: motion stresses magnetic fields in an active region until reconnection releases stored magnetic energy. The flare is the rapid burst of radiation and energetic particles. The CME is the separate, massive ejection of magnetized plasma. Their shared origin explains why they are often associated, while their different forms explain why their travel times, Earth-directed requirements and technological effects are not the same.
