Linux “page-cache corruption” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The same wrong bytes, read error, or crash can come from a kernel or filesystem race, corrupted RAM or DMA, a coherency bug, or failing storage and its controller path. The fastest way to separate them is to preserve evidence, compare buffered and direct reads, correlate kernel and device logs, run non-destructive SMART tests, and reproduce the failure across kernels, workloads, devices, and known-good memory or controllers.

What the Linux page cache does

The page cache is the normal path between applications and filesystems. Linux kernel documentation describes it as “the primary way that the user and the rest of the kernel interact with filesystems.” Ordinary read, write, and mmap operations normally use cached pages. An application can therefore see data in memory that has not yet reached the device.

A write usually changes a cached page and marks it dirty. The system can report that the write call succeeded while the drive still contains older data. Background writeback later sends dirty pages to the block layer. fsync() is the application’s request to push the file’s data and required metadata toward stable storage; it is not a guarantee that every lower layer is healthy.

The virtual filesystem tracks dirty and writeback state and records writeback failures in file state. A later write, fsync, or close may be where an earlier device error becomes visible. Consequently, the time of the reported error can differ from the time the underlying corruption occurred.

Why “corruption” is ambiguous

People use the term for several different observations:

  • Wrong bytes returned from a buffered read or an mmap access.
  • An EIO error, short read, checksum failure, or delayed writeback error.
  • A SIGBUS when a memory-mapped page cannot be supplied or verified.
  • Filesystem metadata damage discovered after a crash or forced shutdown.
  • A kernel fault involving page tables, use-after-free, locking, RCU, or another memory-management invariant.

Each observation identifies a symptom at a different layer. It does not, by itself, identify bad NAND, a bad disk head, a defective cable, a filesystem bug, or a kernel race.

What can actually corrupt data seen through the cache?

Kernel or filesystem races

Timing-sensitive bugs can leave a page mapped to the wrong file or offset, expose stale contents after truncate or hole-punch operations, or mishandle interactions among buffered I/O, direct I/O, mmap, reflinks, and concurrent metadata changes. A failure that appears only on one kernel or filesystem version, or only under a particular stress workload, is evidence for this class.

Race-related failures are often nondeterministic. The affected offset may change between runs, and moving the same file to another device may not make the symptom disappear if the workload and kernel remain unchanged. Kernel diagnostics such as BUG reports, page-table warnings, KASAN, lockdep, RCU, or use-after-free reports are especially valuable because they identify an invariant violation close to the software fault.

RAM, CPU, or DMA corruption

Cached pages live in system memory. A faulty DIMM, marginal memory timing, CPU cache problem, or device performing an invalid DMA transfer can alter those pages without the storage medium being defective. Machine-check and EDAC reports, corrected-error counters that escalate, or corruption appearing in unrelated files and offsets point toward this path.

This category can mimic a page-cache race: the same page may be correct on one read and wrong on another, and a direct read can differ simply because it uses a different memory path or timing. Test memory and the controller independently before declaring the filesystem guilty.

Filesystem coherency or metadata bugs

Filesystem code coordinates page-cache state, extent maps, delayed allocation, reflinks, snapshots, truncation, and journal or log replay. A coherency defect can produce stale or misdirected data without any physical media error. Offline checking may find metadata damage, but a checker normally cannot prove whether the original cause was a software bug, an interrupted write, or hardware corruption.

Storage, controller, link, or media failure

Bad sectors, flash translation errors, controller resets, transport CRC faults, power interruptions, firmware defects, RAID problems, and damaged cables can all surface as cache corruption. The strongest evidence is repeatability: the same LBA or byte range fails again, a direct read returns the same error or bytes after the cache is gone, or independent systems observe the same defect.

Race or failing storage? Compare the evidence

Diagnostic axis Evidence favoring a race or memory path Evidence favoring storage or the I/O path
Reproducibility Nondeterministic, timing-sensitive, or workload-dependent; offsets may vary. Repeatable failure at the same LBA, sector range, or byte offset.
What the failure follows Follows a kernel, filesystem version, mount option, or concurrent workload. Follows one drive, namespace, RAID member, controller, cable, or LBA.
Logs BUG, page-table, KASAN, lockdep, RCU, use-after-free, machine-check, or EDAC evidence. Medium errors, CRC errors, timeouts, resets, link faults, controller messages, or writeback errors.
Buffered versus direct I/O Buffered data is wrong but a correctly aligned direct read is consistently correct, or results change with timing. Direct read reproduces the same bad bytes or I/O error after cache eviction.
SMART and self-tests Clean results do not rule out RAM, firmware, controller, cable, or filesystem faults. Failed self-test, logged errors, a reported bad LBA, or worsening health supports device-path failure.
Filesystem check No metadata damage does not exclude a transient race or memory corruption. Deterministic metadata or checksum damage strengthens the hardware/I/O hypothesis but does not identify the exact component.

A clean SMART result is not a clean bill of health for the complete I/O path. SMART mainly reports what the device knows; it cannot see every controller, cable, power, RAID, firmware, or RAM problem. Conversely, one filesystem error after a crash is not proof of failing media.

Investigation procedure

1. Preserve the system before changing it

Make a read-only copy or image of important data if possible. Save the kernel version and configuration, filesystem type and mount options, device identity, relevant logs, and hashes of affected files. Do not run repair commands or repeatedly overwrite the suspect area before a backup exists; repair can destroy evidence and make later comparison impossible.

2. Describe exactly what happened

Record the application, pathname, file offset, expected and observed bytes, timestamp, operation type, and whether the result was wrong data, EIO, a short read, a checksum failure, SIGBUS, or a kernel crash. Note whether the file was being truncated, reflinked, snapshotted, memory-mapped, or accessed concurrently. A precise symptom is more useful than the label “cache corruption.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Compare cached and direct paths

First reread the file after the affected pages have naturally aged out or after a controlled cache drop during a maintenance window. On a test system, the conventional sequence is sync; echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches; do not use it as a routine performance fix, and do not assume it repairs data.

Then compare with a direct read using a tool that supports O_DIRECT, or with an application configured for direct I/O. Alignment, request size, filesystem support, and device-sector constraints matter; an unaligned request may fail for reasons unrelated to corruption. If the discrepancy vanishes with direct I/O, the cache or memory path is implicated, but that result alone does not prove a race. A bad device can also be masked by cached data, and a direct read can use a different timing or DMA path.

4. Correlate kernel, filesystem, and block logs

Inspect the same time window in dmesg and the system journal. Look for filesystem warnings, VFS writeback errors, block-layer I/O errors, resets and timeouts, transport or CRC messages, controller faults, machine checks, and EDAC reports. Match timestamps and device names to the affected file. A delayed writeback error may appear long after the application’s successful write, so inspect the entire interval rather than only the final stack trace.

5. Run non-destructive device diagnostics

For supported devices, collect health, error-log, and self-test information with a command such as smartctl -H -A -l error -l selftest /dev/DEVICE. The exact options and fields differ for ATA, SCSI, and NVMe drives, so use the mode appropriate to the device and preserve the output. Run a short test first; schedule an extended test during a maintenance window when the workload allows it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the self-test log, reported failing LBA, uncorrectable or pending sectors, interface errors, and trends over time. A failed test or stable bad LBA is strong storage evidence. A passing test only means that this test and the device’s own sensors found no fault; it does not clear the controller, link, filesystem, RAM, or every region of media.

6. Check the filesystem offline

Use the filesystem-specific checker through fsck from suitable rescue media or on an unmounted volume. The generic front end selects the checker; its options and repair behavior belong to the filesystem. Start with a non-writing check when supported, save the report, and repair only after data is protected. An offline checker can identify metadata inconsistencies and sometimes checksums, but it cannot reconstruct the original sequence of events or prove that the disk surface caused them.

7. Reproduce with controlled substitutions

Change one variable at a time:

  • Boot a current, known-good kernel while keeping the workload and storage unchanged.
  • Disable the suspected feature or concurrency pattern, such as a particular mmap, reflink, direct-I/O, snapshot, or truncate operation.
  • Move a test copy of the file to known-good storage and repeat the workload.
  • Attach the suspect device through a known-good controller or cable, or test a known-good device through the suspect path.
  • Run a proper memory test and review machine-check or EDAC counters separately from filesystem tests.

If the failure follows the kernel or workload, software or memory becomes more likely. If it follows the device or exact LBA, storage or its immediate path becomes more likely. If it follows the controller, cable, power source, or RAID member, replacing the drive alone may not solve it.

8. Escalate with a minimal reproducer

For a suspected kernel or filesystem defect, provide the exact kernel and filesystem versions, configuration, mount options, hardware topology, workload sequence, file sizes and offsets, buffered and direct-read results, logs, trace data, and crash dump. Include whether the failure survives cache eviction and whether it reproduces on a known-good device. A small deterministic reproducer is far more actionable than a large damaged tree.

Using integrity verification to narrow the layer

When a file is protected by fs-verity, verification failures are explicit: a read can return EIO, and an affected memory-mapped access can raise SIGBUS. That proves the bytes no longer match the authenticated file data at the point of verification, but you still need logs and path substitution to distinguish media, RAM, DMA, and software causes.

Page-table checking is useful when a memory-corruption hypothesis is credible and the running kernel supports it. Its synchronous checks can stop the kernel near an invalid mapping instead of allowing corruption to surface much later. Use it on a controlled test system because deliberately provoking a crash can interrupt workloads and does not repair data.

Common mistakes and safer decisions

  • Assuming a successful write means durable storage: until writeback and the requested synchronization complete, cached dirty data may differ from the medium.
  • Treating cache dropping as a repair: eviction changes what is reread; it does not correct corrupted storage or memory.
  • Trusting one clean SMART result: test the complete path, including controller, link, power, firmware, RAID, and RAM.
  • Running repair first: capture images, logs, hashes, and device diagnostics before writing fixes.
  • Comparing direct I/O without checking alignment: unsupported alignment or request sizes can create false failures.
  • Replacing the drive based on one filesystem error: require repeatability, block errors, self-test evidence, or a device-specific reproduction whenever possible.

Replace or isolate hardware promptly when errors are repeatable, self-tests fail, the same LBA is implicated, or the device is producing resets and uncorrectable I/O. Treat the incident as a software or memory investigation when failures move with the kernel or workload, vary by timing, and coincide with kernel memory diagnostics. When evidence conflicts, keep the system isolated, preserve the original media, and test each layer independently rather than choosing a cause from a single symptom.
