In a multilayer ceramic chip capacitor (MLCC), a small steady DC leakage current is normal because the insulation between its electrodes has finite resistance. A higher-than-expected current can instead indicate a measurement problem, a crack or other insulation damage, or a part outside its specification. The key is to distinguish short-lived current after voltage is applied from settled leakage, then check the exact part specification and investigate stress or defects if the settled value is too high.

What “leakage” means in an MLCC

Insulation resistance is the ratio of applied DC voltage to the current that remains after a specified settling period. It is finite in a real capacitor, so a small steady current can flow even when the part is functioning normally. Murata describes total current after voltage is applied as three components: charge current, absorption current and leakage current. Murata’s explanation of insulation resistance and leakage current emphasizes that the measured insulation-resistance value depends on when the reading is taken.

Charge current accompanies the initial charging of the capacitor, while absorption current declines over time. The remaining steady component is leakage. Comparing a reading taken immediately after applying voltage with a reading taken after a defined delay can therefore produce very different results. Keep the voltage, elapsed time, temperature and ripple conditions consistent before deciding that a part has abnormal leakage.

These distinctions apply here to MLCCs; ceramic capacitor types and constructions should not be assumed to behave identically. Also, “absorption current” in this measurement context is not the same as dielectric-absorption recovery voltage. KEMET’s ceramic-capacitor FAQ excerpt separately notes that dielectric absorption is not normally specified or measured for ceramic capacitors. KEMET’s ceramic capacitor FAQ and application guide

Three different things that can be called leakage

It helps to separate three conditions before troubleshooting. First is ordinary finite insulation resistance: the small steady DC current present after the initial response has settled. Second is the temporary current after voltage is applied, which includes charging and absorption components and decreases over time. Third is abnormally increased current caused by damaged or defective insulation. The same word may be used for all three, but they imply different actions: wait for the specified measurement interval for a transient, compare steady current with the part’s specification for normal behavior, and investigate the part and its history if the settled result is below its requirement.

A reading is meaningful only in relation to its test conditions. Insulation resistance is calculated from the applied DC voltage and the measured current, so changing the voltage, elapsed time, temperature or ripple conditions can change the comparison. If two readings were taken using different procedures, a difference does not by itself show that the capacitor has degraded. Record how the reading was obtained before drawing a conclusion.

What can cause abnormally high leakage?

Cracks that reach active electrodes

A mechanical or thermal crack becomes an electrical concern when it intersects the active region containing internal electrodes. Murata explains that the air gap in a crack can concentrate the electric field. If local breakdown occurs, repeated discharges can progressively degrade insulation resistance. The part may then show low insulation resistance or, depending on the crack path and conditions, a short circuit or open circuit. Murata’s explanation of failure caused by cracks in chip MLCCs

This mechanism explains why the mere presence of visible damage and the electrical result do not always tell the whole story. The relevant issue is whether a crack reaches the active electrode area and what happens in that damaged region under electric field. A crack can provide a weak path, and repeated localized discharge can progressively worsen the insulation. A low-resistance reading is a reason to investigate, but it does not identify the crack’s location or prove that a crack is the cause.

Board strain, solder movement and contamination

Board bending or twisting can transfer stress through the copper land and solder into an MLCC termination. Murata describes the sequence: the board moves, the land moves, solder deforms, and tensile stress concentrates near the ends of the component’s external electrodes. A crack may result. A gap in a crack can also allow moisture or organic material from solder flux to enter and further degrade insulation resistance. This is a documented way a crack-related path can worsen; it does not mean ordinary ambient humidity alone explains every leakage complaint.

Murata’s strain-crack article was published August 28, 2012, and last revised July 27, 2022. It reports examples of customer strain standards—500 μST for products that may affect human life and 1000 μST for general consumer products—but says board type, thickness and other factors affect component stress, and customers set standards using their own judgment and experience. Those figures are examples, not universal acceptance limits. Murata’s strain-crack mechanism and prevention guidance

The numbers should not be used as a substitute for measuring the actual assembly or applying a standard without context. Board thickness and construction change how board movement reaches a component, and the same nominal process can impose different stresses in different assemblies. Murata’s examples show that strain limits are selected in context; they do not establish one pass/fail threshold for every product. A useful process review therefore asks where bending or twisting occurs, which components are exposed, and what acceptance standard fits that board and use case.

Manufacturing-related defects

If inspection does not reveal a crack, possible low-insulation-resistance mechanisms include internal contamination, thin or uneven dielectric layers, delamination and voids in the dielectric. These possibilities appear in an indexed KEMET/YAGEO failure-analysis excerpt, but the destination was not accessible in full. Treat them as leads for component-level failure analysis, not as a diagnosis or a ranking by likelihood. KEMET/YAGEO’s failure-analysis page

That distinction matters during triage: an external visual inspection may not establish whether an internal defect is present. If the reading remains low under controlled test conditions and a crack is not apparent, preserve the part and its history and consider component-level analysis. The available excerpt supports a checklist of possibilities, not a claim that any one defect is common or that it can be confirmed from a resistance reading alone.

Normal part and environment variation

MLCC specifications generally state a lower limit for insulation resistance rather than promising one tightly bounded value. Murata cautions that the measured value can vary with the use environment and advises checking the detailed specification for the exact component. If circuit behavior depends on insulation resistance, account for plausible variation instead of assuming a fixed value. Murata’s guidance on insulation-resistance precautions

A component’s published limit is therefore not a promise that every acceptable part will produce the same resistance reading in every environment. Check the detailed specification for the exact part number and design the circuit so that relevant variation does not undermine operation. Do not transfer an insulation-resistance limit from a different package, dielectric, capacitance or product family simply because the parts look similar.

How to measure leakage without mistaking a transient for a fault

Murata describes the measurement as applying DC without ripple between the terminals and measuring leakage current after a set time. Its example refers to a defined delay such as 60 seconds, but the correct voltage, delay, temperature and acceptance limit must come from the specification for the exact part. A 60-second wait is not a universal test rule.

  1. Identify the exact component. Record the complete part number and obtain its detailed specification. Confirm the applicable insulation-resistance limit and prescribed test conditions.
  2. Check the test setup. Verify connections and polarity where applicable, use a suitable current-limited DC source, and avoid ripple during the measurement. Surface contamination, fixture leakage or unsuitable instruments can distort very small-current readings.
  3. Apply the specified voltage and wait the specified time. Do not compare a reading taken during charging or absorption-current decay with a settled reading or a specification measured after a defined interval.
  4. Record conditions and compare with the limit. Note voltage, elapsed time, temperature and environment, then compare the result against the part’s lower insulation-resistance limit under matching conditions.
  5. If the result is low, inspect and investigate. Look for visible damage or contamination, and review board strain, assembly and thermal history. A multimeter reading without controlled timing and conditions is not enough to identify the cause.

This sequence combines manufacturer guidance into a practical diagnostic approach; it is not a universal manufacturer-prescribed test procedure. Very high resistance measurements require particular care with fixtures and test-equipment leakage. KEMET’s ceramic capacitor FAQ and application guide

How to interpret the result

If current is high just after voltage is applied and then falls, first ask whether the reading was taken before charge and absorption currents had decayed. Repeat the measurement using the part’s defined delay and test conditions. A falling current is consistent with transient components; it is not enough to establish that the final leakage meets the specification, so the settled result still needs comparison with the part’s limit.

If insulation resistance remains below the applicable lower limit after the specified wait, check the test fixture and environmental conditions before condemning the component. Tiny currents can be affected by leakage in the measurement setup or contamination on surfaces. Then inspect the part and review how the board was handled and assembled. Even a valid low reading does not, by itself, distinguish a crack, contamination, an internal manufacturing defect or another cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the comparison apples-to-apples: use the exact part’s stated test voltage, delay and other conditions, and document the temperature and environment. Murata’s example of a 60-second delay illustrates that timing is part of the measurement, not a convenient afterthought. Use the specification rather than adopting that example as a blanket rule. A current measured with ripple or during the initial response is not directly comparable to a steady DC measurement made without ripple after a defined interval.

How to reduce leakage risk

Reduce mechanical strain in layout and handling

  • Keep MLCCs away from board edges, screw holes and connectors, and avoid locations near high-strain corners or bends.
  • Review the board’s separation-line type and the depanelization method; cutting, snapping or twisting can bend the board and load nearby components.
  • Optimize land width and copper patterns with board deformation in mind. Murata also suggests considering resin-containing external electrodes where high strain is expected, subject to part availability and design review.
  • Control bending and twisting during manufacturing, installation and servicing. Measure strain at processes that load the board and set an acceptance standard appropriate to the board and assembly rather than adopting a single figure as universal.

These measures target the mechanical path from board movement through solder to the component termination. Their suitability depends on board construction, component placement and process conditions. Murata’s strain-crack prevention guidance

Use the strain review to look across the product lifecycle, not just the initial assembly step. The cited guidance identifies board separation and handling among the concerns; installation and servicing can also bend or twist the board. A component that survives one operation may still be exposed during another. Identify the operations that load the board, measure strain where appropriate, and set a process standard that reflects the particular board and assembly.

Placement, land geometry and copper patterns are options to review rather than guaranteed fixes. Moving a part away from an edge or connector may reduce exposure to strain, but layout still has to meet the electrical and physical requirements of the design. Likewise, resin-containing external electrodes are a product-selection option for locations expected to see high strain, not a repair for a board that is already flexing excessively. Confirm availability and suitability with the component’s exact product information.

Review thermal stress and assembly conditions

Cracks can follow thermal as well as mechanical stress. Review thermal excursions and assembly conditions against the guidance for the particular component family. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one thermal profile that is appropriate for every MLCC.

Do not attribute every crack to board flex without reviewing thermal history, and do not infer a universal thermal limit from the general guidance. The exact part family and assembly conditions matter. If a failure appears after a thermal process or excursion, record that history as part of the investigation and compare the process with the maker’s applicable recommendations.

Select and design around the exact specification

For the selected part, verify the rated voltage, dielectric, capacitance, package, insulation-resistance limit and reliability-test conditions in its detailed specification. If the circuit is sensitive to leakage, evaluate the effect of resistance variation in the intended environment and design for the applicable limits. A generic replacement capacitor cannot be assumed compatible merely because its capacitance appears to match.

Part selection and mechanical mitigation solve different problems. Checking the insulation-resistance limit and related specifications helps determine whether a measured value is acceptable for the component and whether circuit operation can tolerate relevant variation. Layout and process controls address the possibility that board strain will cause a crack. Neither substitutes for the other: a mechanically robust placement does not change the part’s published electrical limits, while choosing a part with a suitable specification does not eliminate stress from a bending board.

When sourcing a replacement MLCC, match the original’s actual requirements rather than choosing by appearance or capacitance alone. Verify package, dielectric, rated voltage, capacitance and insulation-resistance limit, and review reliability-test conditions in the detailed sheet. The sources do not establish a universal interchange rule or identify a universally suitable replacement. If circuit behavior depends on resistance, account for the variation relevant to the use environment instead of assuming a tightly bounded value.

Replace damaged parts and correct the cause

A cracked or failed MLCC is generally a replacement-and-root-cause problem, not a repair candidate. Choose a replacement that meets the electrical and mechanical requirements, then address the strain, thermal, contamination or process condition that may have damaged the original. Replacing the component without correcting the cause can leave the same failure path in place.

Replacement alone may restore the circuit temporarily while leaving the underlying exposure unchanged. Before closing the investigation, consider whether the board was bent during depanelization, assembly, installation or servicing; whether the location is close to a board edge, screw hole, connector, corner or bend; and whether thermal conditions or contamination need review. The available sources support these as investigation areas, not as proof that any one caused a particular failure.

Choosing the right response to a leakage reading

The most useful response depends on which source of the symptom is plausible. A timing or fixture issue belongs to the measurement procedure; ordinary finite insulation resistance belongs to the part’s expected electrical behavior and specification; a strain-related crack calls for layout or process changes and replacement of the damaged part; and persistent low resistance without an apparent crack may warrant component failure analysis. These options act at different stages, so choosing the right intervention starts with a controlled measurement and exact part identification.

What you observe First response What the evidence supports
Current is high immediately after voltage is applied but falls with time Repeat the measurement using the specified settling time and conditions. Initial current includes charging and absorption components as well as leakage; timing affects the insulation-resistance reading. Murata
Settled insulation resistance is below the part’s limit Check the fixture and environment, then inspect the part and review its stress history. A low result warrants investigation, but the reading alone does not establish a particular failure mechanism.
Crack or strain-related damage is suspected Review board bending, depanelization, placement, assembly and thermal conditions; replace the damaged component. Cracks reaching active electrodes can degrade insulation resistance through localized field concentration and repeated discharge. Murata
No crack is apparent, but low resistance persists Escalate to component failure analysis and consider internal defects or contamination. Contamination, uneven or thin layers, delamination and voids are possible mechanisms in the indexed KEMET/YAGEO excerpt, not established diagnoses. KEMET/YAGEO

There is no evidence here to rank these causes by frequency or to quantify how much a particular mitigation reduces risk. Choose measures based on the observed symptom and the point in the system where the potential cause originates. Better measurement practice addresses uncertainty in the reading, while exact-part specification review addresses interpretation. Board placement and strain controls act upstream of crack formation, and replacement addresses a damaged component after the event. Manufacturing analysis is relevant when the evidence points inward rather than to an external stress path.

Trade-offs also depend on implementation constraints: package, capacitance, dielectric, voltage, temperature, board flex and circuit sensitivity all matter. A layout change or alternate external-electrode option has to fit the design; a replacement must satisfy the exact electrical and mechanical needs. The reviewed manufacturer sources do not compare the efficacy or cost of these options, so treat them as targeted actions rather than interchangeable guarantees.

Frequently asked questions

Is any leakage current in an MLCC a sign of failure?

No. A real MLCC has finite insulation resistance, so a small steady current can flow under DC bias. The question is whether the settled value meets the exact part’s specification under the stated test conditions. The initial current also includes charging and absorption components that decline over time.

Why does the leakage reading change after voltage is applied?

Total current initially includes charge current and absorption current as well as steady leakage. Since the transient components decline, the reading depends on the elapsed time. Use the test voltage and delay specified for the exact part; Murata’s 60-second example is illustrative, not a universal rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can humidity cause MLCC leakage?

Murata describes moisture or organic solder-flux material entering through a gap in a crack and worsening insulation resistance. That evidence concerns a crack-related path; it does not establish that ordinary ambient humidity alone causes every leakage complaint.

What strain limit should I use for the PCB?

There is no single universal limit in the cited guidance. Murata reports customer examples of 500 μST for products that may affect human life and 1000 μST for general consumer products, while noting that board construction and other factors affect component stress. Set a standard appropriate to the specific board and assembly.

Can I repair a cracked chip capacitor?

The supported response is generally to replace the failed part and correct the root cause. Select a replacement against the original electrical and mechanical requirements, then investigate strain, thermal conditions, contamination or process history so the same failure path is not left in place.

What if resistance is still low but I cannot see a crack?

First confirm the measurement conditions and check the fixture and environment. If low resistance persists, consider component-level failure analysis. The indexed KEMET/YAGEO excerpt lists contamination, thin or uneven dielectric layers, delamination and voids as possible mechanisms, but those possibilities cannot be diagnosed from a reading alone.

No. A real MLCC has finite insulation resistance, so a small steady current can flow under DC bias. Compare the settled value with the exact part’s specification and test conditions; initial current also includes transient charging and absorption components.

Why does the leakage reading change after voltage is applied?

The initial total current includes charge and absorption components as well as steady leakage. The transient components decline over time, so use the test voltage and delay specified for the exact part. A 60-second example is not a universal rule.

Can humidity cause MLCC leakage?

Moisture or solder-flux organics may enter through a crack and worsen insulation resistance. This does not establish that ordinary ambient humidity alone explains every leakage complaint.

What strain limit should I use for the PCB?

The cited guidance does not provide a universal limit. Murata reports customer examples of 500 μST and 1000 μST for different product categories, but says board construction and other factors matter. Set a standard for the particular board and assembly.

Can I repair a cracked chip capacitor?

A cracked or failed MLCC is generally a replacement-and-root-cause issue. Match the replacement to electrical and mechanical requirements, then address the condition that may have caused the damage.

What if resistance stays low but I cannot see a crack?

Confirm the test conditions and setup first. If the result persists, consider component failure analysis; internal contamination, thin or uneven dielectric layers, delamination and voids are possible mechanisms, not diagnoses from a reading alone.

The Bottom Line

A small settled DC current is normal in an MLCC; transient current just after voltage is applied is not the same thing as steady leakage. Measure under the exact part’s specified conditions, compare against its insulation-resistance limit, and investigate cracks, board strain, thermal history or internal defects if the result remains low. Prevention is part-specific: control board flex, choose and place the component for the actual design, and correct the root cause when replacing a damaged part.
