Bitcoin rallies when new buying demand and willingness to hold coins exceed the bitcoin available for sale at current prices. It corrects when that balance reverses: marginal buyers step back, holders sell, leveraged trades unwind, or a shock reduces expected demand. Bitcoin’s protocol limits how quickly new coins enter circulation, so relatively small demand changes can produce unusually large price moves. No single cause explains every rally or decline; timing, expectations, liquidity and the broader risk environment determine which force dominates.
How Bitcoin’s price is formed
Bitcoin trades continuously on multiple spot exchanges and derivatives venues. Each venue has an order book containing bids from prospective buyers and asks from sellers. The quoted price moves when aggressive orders consume available bids or asks. A rally therefore does not require every holder to become bullish. It requires enough additional buying, or enough reluctance to sell, that buyers must accept progressively higher offers. A correction is the mirror image: sellers accept lower bids, or buyers stop bidding at previous prices.
The important concept is marginal supply and demand. Bitcoin’s total supply is large, but only a fraction is offered for sale at any moment. Long-term holders may not respond to a small price change, while short-term traders, miners, funds and leveraged investors may be active. The market-clearing price is set by the coins available to those active participants, not by the entire supply.

The protocol disclosures described in a 2026 Securities and Exchange Commission filing specify an eventual limit of 21 million bitcoin. The block reward is reduced every 210,000 blocks, so newly mined supply cannot quickly expand when demand jumps. CME economists Bluford Putnam and Erik Norland described this supply as “highly inelastic” and noted that inelastic supply increases volatility. When supply cannot respond quickly, a demand shock has to be absorbed mostly through price.

Why is Bitcoin going up?
A demand shock meets constrained issuance
A rally often starts when a new group of buyers arrives, existing buyers increase their orders, or current holders become less willing to sell. Examples include higher expectations for adoption, greater merchant or peer-to-peer use, renewed investor interest, or easier access through regulated investment products. Because miners cannot rapidly create extra coins in response, the additional demand competes for a relatively fixed near-term float. Price rises until enough holders are willing to sell or buyers stop raising their bids.
Demand can be real, speculative or a mixture. A fund allocating to bitcoin, a company accepting it for payment and a trader buying because of momentum all add demand in the order book. Their motivations and holding periods differ, but their orders can move the same market. A rally is more durable when new demand persists after the initial headline; it is more fragile when buyers are relying on a short-lived narrative or borrowed money.
Adoption and access expectations
Announcements about network use, payment acceptance, custody infrastructure or institutional access can change estimates of future demand. The SEC identifies adoption, perceived scarcity, protocol development, competing platforms, political and regulatory conditions, and speculation as factors that may affect bitcoin’s price. The announcement itself does not establish how many coins will be bought. Traders reprice the probability and size of future demand, often before measurable usage changes appear.
Access matters because an investor who previously could not hold bitcoin directly may be able to obtain exposure through a regulated product, a qualified custodian or a familiar brokerage account. More access can enlarge the potential buyer base, but it can also make selling easier. The same channel that attracts inflows during optimism can transmit redemptions during fear.

Momentum, positioning and a feedback loop
Once price rises, trend-following traders may buy breakouts, short sellers may close positions, and news coverage may attract additional participants. Those transactions can reinforce the move even when the original catalyst is modest. Rising collateral values may also permit more leverage, increasing buying power. The feedback reverses when price stops advancing: momentum traders sell, short positions are opened, and leveraged longs may be liquidated. A market can therefore accelerate in either direction without a new fundamental announcement at every step.
Liquidity and the size of the order book
Liquidity determines how much buying is required to move the price. In a deep order book, many asks are available near the current quote. In a thin book, a relatively small market order can remove several price levels. Liquidity varies by exchange, time zone, weekend, volatility and participants’ willingness to quote. A rally that looks powerful on a low-volume venue may not represent the whole market, while a broad move across venues is harder to attribute to a single order.
Does the halving make Bitcoin rise?
No. A halving reduces the flow of newly issued bitcoin, but it does not create demand or guarantee a return. The SEC’s 2026 filing describes a reward reduction every 210,000 blocks. The April 2024 halving reduced the block reward from 6.25 bitcoin to 3.125 bitcoin per block. The protocol’s eventual 21-million limit constrains total issuance, while the halving changes the rate at which new units enter circulation.

| Halving fact | What it means for a beginner |
|---|---|
| Interval: 210,000 blocks | The reward schedule is tied to blocks, not a guaranteed calendar date. |
| April 2024 reward change: 6.25 to 3.125 bitcoin per block | Miners receive fewer newly created coins for each qualifying block after the event. |
| Eventual protocol limit: 21 million bitcoin | Total supply growth is constrained, but coins already in existence can still be sold. |
A halving can support a bullish narrative because traders anticipate slower new supply and may buy ahead of the event. It can also change miners’ finances: with fewer coins per block, a miner that needs cash may sell more of its inventory, especially if operating costs or bitcoin’s market price are unfavorable. The net market effect depends on demand, miner behavior, existing holder sales and expectations. If the halving was widely anticipated, much of the repricing may occur before the date; a later rally or decline cannot be assigned to the event without examining the specific period and competing news.

Are Bitcoin ETFs and ETPs pushing the price up?
They can add a significant buying or selling channel, but they are not automatically bullish. A 2025 Federal Reserve note records that the SEC approved 2024 rule changes allowing regulated exchanges to list products referencing Bitcoin and Ether. The note examines daily flows, liquidity and premiums or discounts to net asset value (NAV)—the value of the assets represented by a product.
When net creations require a product sponsor to obtain bitcoin, those purchases can add demand to the spot market. Persistent inflows may therefore support a rally, particularly when the available float is limited. Redemptions can work in the opposite direction: the product may need to sell or dealers may hedge by selling, adding pressure during a correction. The size, timing and hedging method of each product matter, so an ETF headline alone does not reveal the net market impact.
- Check the direction: creations and net inflows are different from gross trading volume.
- Check the horizon: one busy session may not alter a multi-month trend.
- Check the price relationship: a premium or discount to NAV can signal demand or liquidity stress, not a guaranteed future return.
- Check reversals: the same products that broaden access can transmit rapid redemptions.
In other words, regulated access changes market plumbing. It may widen participation and make flows observable, but it does not remove volatility or ensure that buyers outnumber sellers.

Marginal buyers withdraw
A correction can begin without a dramatic new supply event. If prospective buyers decide that the price already reflects optimistic adoption or halving expectations, they may stop bidding aggressively. Sellers then have to accept lower prices to find a buyer. Early declines can be modest, but a visible break may prompt momentum traders and short-term holders to sell at the same time.

Profit-taking increases offered supply
Holders who bought at lower prices may lock in gains after a strong advance. Their sales add coins to the active market even though the protocol’s issuance has not changed. Profit-taking is especially influential when many traders entered around the same level and place similar stop orders. It does not prove that the long-term adoption thesis is wrong; it changes near-term supply.
Leverage and forced liquidations
Derivatives allow traders to control a position larger than their cash collateral. A falling price reduces the collateral supporting leveraged long positions. Exchanges can then liquidate those positions, selling into a declining market. The forced sale pushes price lower, triggering additional liquidations in a feedback loop. This mechanism explains why a correction can be much faster than the buildup that preceded it. Open interest, funding rates and liquidation data can help identify leverage, but they do not by themselves establish the original cause.
Negative adoption, regulatory or protocol news
The SEC lists political and economic conditions, regulation, perceived scarcity, software development, competing platforms and speculation among influences on bitcoin’s price. A rule that restricts access, a security incident that damages confidence, a delayed upgrade or evidence of weaker usage can reduce expected future demand. Conversely, a headline may be sold even when its long-term implications are limited if traders had already priced it in.

Risk-off conditions and liquidity stress
Bitcoin can trade like a risk asset when investors are reducing exposure to volatile holdings. In a 2022 speech, Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard wrote: “Contrary to claims that crypto-assets are a hedge to inflation or an uncorrelated asset class, crypto-assets have plummeted in value and have proven to be highly correlated with riskier equities and with risk appetite more generally.” Her statement describes the stress observed in that period; it is not a permanent law that bitcoin must track stocks every day.

During a broad liquidity shock, investors may sell profitable or liquid assets to raise cash, correlations can rise and market makers may quote less aggressively. These conditions can turn an ordinary pullback into a sharp correction. When liquidity improves, the same macro backdrop may produce a different response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do interest rates affect Bitcoin?
Interest rates can matter through opportunity cost, liquidity and risk appetite, but the relationship is not mechanical. Higher yields on relatively low-risk assets can make speculative positions less attractive. Tighter monetary conditions may reduce leverage and the amount of capital available for risk assets. Lower rates or easier financial conditions can have the opposite effect by encouraging investors to seek higher returns.
However, the evidence varies by period and event window. A 2023 Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report found Bitcoin “orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news” in its event-study sample—meaning the measured response was not a simple one-to-one reaction like that of some other asset classes. That result contrasts with the strong risk-asset correlation described by Brainard during 2022 stress. The practical lesson is to specify the date range, type of news and horizon before claiming that a rate decision caused a bitcoin move.

How to analyze a particular Bitcoin rally or correction
Use a defined window rather than a single headline. The following process separates observable evidence from a retrospective story.
- Set the start and end times. Use a precise date and, for an intraday move, a time zone. Decide whether you are explaining minutes, days or months.
- Identify the first measurable change. Check spot volume, derivatives open interest, funding, liquidations and reported product flows around the beginning of the move.
- Separate supply from demand. Ask whether coins entering the market changed, or whether willingness to buy and hold changed. A halving affects issuance flow; a redemption affects demand and market selling.
- Compare expectations with the surprise. A widely anticipated announcement may have little immediate effect, while an unexpected detail can dominate a seemingly positive event.
- Check liquidity. Examine spreads, order-book depth, exchange outages and the time of day. A thin market can exaggerate a move.
- Check the broader risk regime. Compare equities, credit, the dollar, volatility and other risk-sensitive assets during the same interval. Correlation does not prove that one market caused the other.
- Look for leverage feedback. A fall accompanied by rising liquidations and declining open interest may have been amplified by forced selling rather than new fundamental information alone.
- State uncertainty. If several catalysts occurred together, describe the evidence for each and avoid assigning a precise percentage without an event-focused study.
How to tell strong explanations from weak ones
- Strong: “Net buying increased while order-book supply was thin, and the move coincided with documented product inflows.” This links a mechanism to observable evidence.
- Weak: “The halving caused the rally.” This treats a supply-flow change as a guaranteed demand event and ignores expectations.
- Strong: “Bitcoin fell with equities during the 2022 risk-off period.” This describes a dated correlation and names the regime.
- Weak: “Bitcoin always falls when rates rise.” The New York Fed study and differing market periods do not support that universal rule.
- Strong: “Liquidations accelerated the decline after the initial break.” This distinguishes an amplifier from the trigger.
- Weak: “A large trading volume number proves new long-term adoption.” Volume can include short-term turnover, hedging and sellers.
No available source establishes a universal percentage assigning every bitcoin rally or correction to halvings, product flows, interest rates, regulation or sentiment. Event-specific attribution requires market data for a defined interval and research designed around that event.
How large can corrections be?
Bitcoin’s constrained supply does not make its price stable. It can magnify demand shocks in both directions, and speculative positioning can add leverage. In a 2022 speech, Brainard noted a decline of as much as 75% from the then all-time high. That dated observation illustrates the scale of historical drawdowns; it is not a forecast or a fixed cycle rule. A correction can be a brief pullback within an advance, while a prolonged decline reflects a more persistent deterioration in demand, liquidity or risk appetite.
For a beginner, distinguish three measurements:
- Intraday drawdown: the fall from a session high to its low, often influenced by liquidity and liquidations.
- Correction from a local high: a decline over days or weeks that may occur within a broader trend.
- Peak-to-trough drawdown: the largest fall from an all-time or cycle high, which can span months.
A beginner’s checklist before interpreting a move
- Write down the exact period you are explaining.
- Ask whether the change is primarily demand, available supply, liquidity or leverage.
- Check whether the news was expected and whether the market had already moved.
- Look for product creations or redemptions rather than relying on an ETF headline.
- Compare bitcoin with broader risk markets, while treating correlation as evidence of co-movement rather than proof of causation.
- Separate the initial catalyst from later momentum and forced liquidations.
- Treat halving narratives as changes to issuance flow, not promises of appreciation.
- Use historical drawdowns to understand risk, not to predict a target price.
What this framework can—and cannot—tell you
The supply-and-demand framework explains why bitcoin can react sharply to modest changes in buying, selling or liquidity. It helps organize evidence from issuance, adoption, regulated products, macro conditions and leverage. It cannot tell you in advance which headline will win, how far a move will run or whether a particular day’s price change was caused by one event. Those answers require contemporaneous data, a defined window and careful separation of correlation from causation.
