Madagascar’s megafauna probably disappeared through interacting human and environmental pressures, not one island-wide catastrophe. The strongest evidence points to a late shift toward farming, herding, settlement, landscape burning and hunting. Drought and other climate changes may have weakened populations in particular regions, especially the driest southwest, but the available evidence does not show that drought alone caused the extinctions.
The losses also unfolded over time. Giant lemurs, elephant birds, pygmy hippos and giant tortoises did not all vanish on one date, and the sequence differed among regions and species.
Which animals made up Madagascar’s megafauna?
“Megafauna” in this context means Madagascar’s extinct, unusually large endemic animals. They included several groups that had no close modern equivalent on the island:

- Elephant birds, enormous flightless birds, including species that produced some of the largest known bird eggs.
- Pygmy hippos, small island relatives of mainland hippos.
- Giant tortoises, large herbivores that once shaped vegetation and nutrient cycles.
These animals were endemic, so their disappearance removed entire evolutionary lineages rather than simply reducing the abundance of widespread mainland species. Their final dates are not identical. The evidence supports a broad late-Holocene extinction period, with some local populations surviving later than others.

That chronology matters. Saying that “humans arrived and immediately wiped out the megafauna” compresses a complicated, regionally uneven process into a claim the evidence cannot support.
What is the leading explanation?
The best-supported interpretation is a subsistence shift: human societies increasingly moved from relatively limited foraging toward farming, livestock keeping, more permanent settlement and landscape modification. Those changes could affect megafauna through several mechanisms at once:
- direct killing or capture;
- clearing forests and other habitat for cultivation and settlement;
- repeated burning that changed plant communities;
- competition with introduced cattle, goats and other livestock;
- disturbance of nesting, feeding and watering sites.
Climate stress could have made animals less resilient, but the timing of intensified land use and the appearance of introduced animals often coincides more closely with local disappearance than climate records do. This is why current interpretations generally treat people and climate as interacting pressures rather than mutually exclusive alternatives.
What happened at the three southwestern coastal ponds?
A 2022 PNAS study examined fossil, archaeological and environmental evidence from three coastal ponds in arid southwestern Madagascar. The sites preserve remains of extinct megafauna alongside traces of human activity, allowing researchers to compare the timing of ecological and cultural changes.
At these ponds, local megafaunal disappearance occurred around 1,000 years ago. The same broad interval contains increasingly frequent evidence of human foraging, fire and pastoralism. The deposits also include charcoal, processed shell and fish remains, modified pygmy-hippo bone and introduced animals such as zebu cattle.
The study found that megafauna had persisted through earlier dry intervals. It therefore found little support for late drought, by itself, as the explanation for the final local losses. Instead, the authors argued that a combination of hunting, forest clearance and pastoralism provides the most plausible account for what happened at these sites.

This is a local sequence, not a date for every species on the island. It is valuable because the evidence comes from dated layers containing animals, people, fire and environmental indicators together; it should not be treated as a universal template for every Malagasy habitat.

Humans almost certainly had opportunities to hunt large animals, and hunting is one component of the leading explanation. But the direct evidence is uneven.
Modified bone from the southwestern ponds shows human activity, yet the study cautions that the location and quality of the cutmarks do not make them unambiguous proof of butchery. They should be described as evidence of people interacting with animal remains, not as conclusive proof that hunting caused the extinction at that site.
A 2018 study reported evidence interpreted as early human exploitation of avian megafauna. That finding is relevant to the debate over when people began using elephant birds and other large birds, but it does not establish a single island-wide hunting episode or prove that hunting alone drove every taxon to extinction.
Hunting pressure can also operate without leaving abundant cutmarks. Large, slow-breeding animals may decline when adults are taken repeatedly, eggs are collected, or access to key watering and nesting areas is disrupted. Archaeological visibility is not the same thing as the amount of hunting that occurred.

Why is the subsistence shift important?
The timing of human presence and the timing of extinction are not identical questions. Arguments for people living in Madagascar by about 2000 BCE appear in archaeological and genetic discussions, but the date and nature of that early arrival remain debated.

The subsistence-shift hypothesis proposes that the first small or mobile communities may have coexisted with megafauna for a long period. Later population growth, settlement, agriculture and herding could have changed the scale of pressure. Under this model, the critical transition was not simply “people arrived,” but that human land use became more intensive and widespread.
Intensification can produce cumulative effects:
- More people use the same landscapes. Repeated visits increase encounters with slow-breeding animals.
- Fires become more frequent or extensive. Burning can open woodland, alter fuel loads and replace mature vegetation with different plant communities.
- Cultivation removes or fragments habitat. Even small clearings can matter when populations are already restricted to particular refuges.
- Herds occupy water and forage. Livestock can reach places that wild herbivores depend on during dry seasons.
- Permanent settlement raises local pressure. Fishing, shell collecting, wood cutting and animal keeping concentrate activity around coasts, ponds and rivers.
This sequence explains how megafauna could survive an initial period of human presence and then decline rapidly after land-use practices changed.
Did cattle and other introduced animals contribute?
Yes, they may have contributed, particularly through competition for food and water. A 2021 study combined radiocarbon dates with stable-isotope evidence from introduced ungulates and endemic megafauna. It found brief periods of temporal overlap and some dietary or ecological overlap among coastal goats, hippos and giant tortoises.
Those results show a plausible mechanism, not a demonstrated sole cause. Isotopic similarity indicates that animals used comparable resources; it does not by itself prove that livestock reduced the population of a native species below a survivable level.
Introduced cattle and goats could also have indirect effects. Grazing can change vegetation, animals can trample nesting or feeding areas, and herders may burn vegetation to improve pasture. At the southwestern ponds, introduced animals, charcoal and megafaunal disappearance occur in close temporal association, strengthening the case for a combined pastoral and fire-related pressure.
Did drought cause Madagascar’s megafauna to disappear?
Drought is a credible contributor in some places, but the evidence does not support it as a sufficient island-wide explanation.

Near Ranobe in southwestern Madagascar, extinct pygmy hippos and giant lemurs disappeared during a dry interval dated to approximately 1,000–700 calibrated years before present. However, cattle, high charcoal concentrations and other indicators of human activity appear in the same broad interval. Because the climate and human signals overlap, that study could not isolate drought as the cause.
The three-pond study reached a similar practical conclusion from a different line of evidence: the animals survived earlier dry periods, while their final local disappearance coincided with increased human foraging, fire and pastoralism. This does not mean climate was irrelevant. Aridification can reduce water, shrink productive habitat and make populations more vulnerable to hunting or competition. It means that a dry spell alone does not explain why the final losses occurred when they did.
A 2020 climate-context study placed Malagasy and Mascarene extinctions in a multimillennial environmental framework, emphasizing that drying and human-driven landscape transformation can occur together. Treating one as automatically responsible and the other as irrelevant oversimplifies the record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How did the balance of causes vary by region?
A 2025 synthesis argues that the balance of pressures differed across Madagascar. In the driest zone, initial aridification may have stressed megaherbivores before the final decline. In wetter regions, the arrival and expansion of farmers and herders may have been more important triggers.
Regional variation is expected because Madagascar contains sharply contrasting environments, from dry southwestern habitats to wetter forests and highlands. The same pressure will not affect a giant tortoise, an elephant bird and a forest-adapted lemur in exactly the same way.

How do the main hypotheses compare?
| Hypothesis | Mechanism | Evidence that supports it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunting and harvesting | Removal of adults, juveniles, eggs or carcasses | Human-associated deposits, modified bone and interpreted evidence of early exploitation | Cutmarks are not always diagnostic, and direct evidence is sparse for some species |
| Farming, settlement and fire | Forest clearance, repeated burning and habitat fragmentation | Charcoal and increasing land-use signals coincide with local disappearance at southwestern ponds | Fire may reflect several activities, and local records cannot represent every region |
| Livestock competition | Shared forage and water with cattle, goats and other introduced ungulates | Temporal and stable-isotope overlap among some introduced and endemic herbivores | Overlap demonstrates plausibility, not that competition alone caused extinction |
| Drought and aridification | Reduced water, food and habitat resilience | Dry intervals coincide with some late-Holocene losses, including near Ranobe | Human activity appears in the same intervals, and earlier droughts did not always eliminate megafauna |
The strongest overall fit is therefore an interaction: climate stress may have narrowed the margin of survival, while hunting and increasingly intensive land use supplied the additional pressure that made local populations disappear.
Why did the animals survive for a time after people arrived?
Coexistence is not evidence that humans had no effect, and extinction soon after arrival is not required for a human-driven explanation. Several factors could produce a delayed decline:
- Early communities may have been small, mobile or concentrated in places where encounters with megafauna were infrequent.
- Large islands can contain refuges that remain lightly used for generations.
- Megafauna may tolerate occasional hunting but not sustained adult mortality combined with habitat loss.
- Farming and herding can expand centuries after initial settlement.
- Climate deterioration can reduce populations before human pressure intensifies, making the remaining animals easier to eliminate.
This delayed-pressure model is consistent with the distinction made in the archaeological literature between the first presence of hunters and a later expansion of farming, animal husbandry and settlement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat remains uncertain?
The broad explanation is stronger than any single detail. Scientists still need more species-by-species chronologies and better coverage of regions outside the best-studied southwest. Several limitations affect interpretation:
- Dating resolution: radiocarbon dates provide ranges, and “last appearance” can be earlier than true extinction if younger deposits were not preserved or sampled.
- Uneven preservation: ponds, caves and dry sediments preserve evidence differently, so an apparent absence may reflect local geology.
- Small samples: a handful of bones cannot show how an entire island population behaved.
- Ambiguous marks: surface modification may indicate human handling without proving a specific action such as butchery.
- Taxon-specific responses: a mechanism that threatens grazing tortoises may not affect forest lemurs or nesting birds in the same way.
These qualifications do not erase the human signal. They define how confidently it can be applied from one site or species to another.
What caused the extinction, in one sentence?
Madagascar’s megafauna most likely disappeared during a late-Holocene combination of intensified human land use, hunting, fire, habitat clearance and livestock pressure, with drought and regional climate change altering vulnerability rather than acting as a single universal cause.
