Connected-car apps can collect far more than the commands you tap on a phone. Depending on the vehicle, service, settings and country, the manufacturer may receive account identifiers, vehicle diagnostics, trip and driving behavior, precise location, infotainment activity and automatic crash signals. Some information is generated or transmitted by the vehicle even when you are not actively using the app.
Manufacturers describe these data flows as necessary for navigation, remote functions, maintenance, safety, theft recovery, software updates and legal obligations. Their policies may also permit analytics, product research, personalization and marketing. The exact categories, recipients and controls vary, so the privacy notice for your specific vehicle and market is the decisive document.
What data does my car app collect?
Connected-vehicle policies generally describe three sources: information you provide, information generated by the vehicle and information created when you use connected features. A single car may use all three at once. For example, an account email links you to a vehicle identification number (VIN), the vehicle reports its battery and diagnostic status, and a navigation search creates a record of a destination.

These are examples, not a universal checklist. Ford’s UK policy says collection depends on a vehicle’s connectivity level and the customer’s choices. Honda Canada’s notice qualifies collection by model and connected service and says some vehicle data is collected even when connected services are not being used.

Does the car collect data when I am not using the app?
It can. The app is only one interface to a larger system of vehicle sensors, onboard storage, cellular connectivity and manufacturer servers. A car may record operating status, diagnostic events, trip information or crash signals locally. A subscribed service can then transmit selected information automatically, for example when a fault is detected, an emergency event occurs or a maintenance report is generated.
Honda Canada distinguishes data that remains in vehicle systems from data handled by subscribed connected services. Its notice also describes automatic transmissions for particular events, including certain crash-related location signals. This means uninstalling an app does not necessarily erase onboard records or disable every cellular transmission. Whether a specific transmission occurs depends on the model, service, settings and local rules.
Why do manufacturers want this information?
Delivering features you request
Location, account and vehicle-status data can be needed to provide turn-by-turn navigation, traffic information, remote lock or climate commands, vehicle-finder functions, hotspot connectivity, calendar-assisted destination entry and other connected features. The data flow is part of the service rather than an extra feature of the app.
Maintenance, diagnostics and warranty work
Diagnostic codes, software versions, odometer readings, fluid levels, tire pressure and battery information let a manufacturer or dealer identify a problem, send a maintenance alert, determine whether an update applies and prepare for a service visit. Ford UK and Honda Canada both describe support for diagnostics, maintenance and warranty-related work.

Safety, roadside help and theft recovery
Manufacturers describe using location and vehicle signals for emergency assistance, roadside response, crash handling and theft recovery. Honda Canada also lists fraud prevention and legal or regulatory purposes. Emergency or recovery features can have exceptions to ordinary location controls, so read the service-specific terms rather than assuming a single privacy switch covers every event.
Updates and operating the connected platform
Software and firmware versions, connectivity status and performance logs help determine update eligibility and keep the app, vehicle and backend service working. Providers may use service companies, dealers or other technical partners to host, maintain or troubleshoot those systems.
Improvement, analytics and research
Ford UK and Honda Canada both list analytics, testing, research and product or service improvement among possible purposes. These uses can involve aggregated or linked information, depending on the policy and applicable law. A policy’s inclusion of a purpose does not prove that every vehicle or account is used for it.

The two policies also describe personalization and identifying products or services that may interest an owner. Marketing permissions, legal bases and opt-out choices differ by market. Treat these activities separately from the data needed to unlock a remote door or deliver an emergency call.

Can my car manufacturer track my location?
A connected vehicle may collect precise latitude and longitude in real time or at event-specific intervals. Navigation, location-based searches, roadside assistance and theft recovery naturally require location. Honda Canada also describes location use for certain emergency, financing or legal scenarios. Ford UK lists precise location among vehicle information that may be collected.
Location becomes sensitive when repeated points form a pattern: home and work addresses, medical visits, religious services, school runs or regular travel. The privacy risk comes from the combination of precision, persistence and account linkage, not merely from one isolated coordinate. Check whether your model offers a location setting, whether disabling it affects particular services and whether emergency exceptions remain active.
What happens to driving and infotainment data?
Driving records can include speed, acceleration and deceleration, accelerator and brake use, pedal positions, steering angle, seat-belt status and trip distance or fuel consumption. Infotainment records may include navigation searches, destinations, connected calls, calendar entries used for routing, paired phones, Bluetooth connections, audio settings, climate settings, seat position and hotspot usage.
These records can reveal behavior and relationships even without a name attached. A VIN, account identifier or device ID can reconnect them to a person. Before lending, selling or returning a vehicle, remove paired phones and saved destinations and follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure; a factory reset is not necessarily identical to canceling a cloud subscription.

Who can receive connected-car data?
Recipients depend on the policy, service and jurisdiction. Ford UK lists service providers, dealers and partners, parties a customer has asked or agreed to share with, and authorities in specified circumstances. Honda Canada describes sharing with service providers and other parties for stated purposes and says information may be stored or processed inside or outside Canada.
A feature that sends data to an insurer, navigation partner or another third party has its own permission and terms. Ford UK describes insurance-discount offerings where available; Honda Canada describes certain third-party sharing situations. Do not assume that canceling the manufacturer’s app also cancels a separate third-party agreement.

It can have consequences when a driver or manufacturer shares location or driving-behavior records with an insurer or another recipient, but there is no evidence here that every automaker or insurer uses connected-car data in the same way. Review the recipient, purpose, retention period and opt-out language for the particular feature.
The Federal Trade Commission’s General Motors and OnStar matter illustrates why the issue received regulatory attention. In January 2025, the FTC alleged that precise location and driving-behavior data was collected for some users as often as every three seconds and shared with third parties, including consumer reporting agencies, without adequate disclosure and affirmative consent. That figure is specific to the allegation and is not an industry average.

In January 2026, the FTC announced a finalized order in that matter. The order restricts covered disclosures to consumer reporting agencies for five years. For the order’s 20-year duration, it requires affirmative express consent for covered collection, use or sharing subject to specified exceptions; mechanisms for U.S. consumers to request access and deletion; an option to disable precise-location collection on vehicles with the necessary technology; and opt-out choices for location and driving-behavior data, again subject to limited exceptions. The order addresses the named companies and does not establish that every manufacturer follows the same practice.
How to check and limit connected-car data
- Identify the exact scope. Record the make, model year, trim, connected-service name and country. Open both the vehicle privacy notice and any separate app or subscription notice.
- List active services. In the app and vehicle menus, review remote commands, navigation, emergency assistance, roadside help, theft recovery, hotspot and diagnostic services. Note which require location or automatic event reporting.
- Review account and sharing controls. Look for consent, marketing, analytics, location and third-party sharing settings. Where the vehicle supports it, disable precise-location collection or opt out of driving-behavior sharing after checking which safety features would stop working.
- Remove personal device data. Delete paired phones, Bluetooth profiles, contacts, call logs, calendar entries, saved destinations and home or work addresses from the infotainment system.
- Manage the cloud account. Cancel subscriptions you no longer need, remove old users and request access or deletion where the applicable policy provides that mechanism. Deleting an app alone is not a complete account or vehicle reset.
- Prepare for sale or lease return. Follow the manufacturer’s ownership-transfer instructions. Honda Canada recommends updating ownership information and resetting audio and navigation systems and warns that failing to notify it can leave some reports or services accessible to a previous owner.
- Confirm the result. After a reset, verify that the vehicle is no longer listed in your account, remote commands no longer work and a new owner cannot see your destinations or reports. Keep confirmation of cancellation or transfer.
What varies by vehicle and country?

Ford UK’s legal-basis discussion includes consent, contract, legal obligations and legitimate interests. Honda Canada’s notice is specific to Canada and says processing may occur inside or outside Canada. Neither policy should be silently treated as a worldwide rule for every model or market.
Questions owners commonly ask
Is a connected-car app the only way data leaves the vehicle?
No. Vehicle systems can store information onboard, and subscribed services can transmit selected data automatically for diagnostics, safety, updates or other stated purposes.
Will deleting the app stop tracking?
Not necessarily. App removal does not by itself erase onboard data, cancel a connected subscription or disable automatic event transmissions. Use the account, vehicle and ownership-transfer controls described in the applicable policy.
Can I keep navigation while limiting location sharing?
That depends on the model and service. Navigation generally needs location, while a separate setting may control background or precise-location collection. Check the feature-level explanation before disabling a control.
Does every manufacturer collect data every three seconds?
No. “As often as every three seconds” is the FTC’s description of an allegation in the 2025 General Motors matter involving some users. It is not a prevalence statistic for the connected-car industry.
What should I do before selling the car?
Remove paired devices and personal destinations, reset audio and navigation systems, cancel or transfer connected services and notify the manufacturer of the ownership change. Confirm that your account and remote access have been removed.
