A capybara relative preserved in Chile’s Atacama region shows that the desert was once capable of supporting wetland animals. Together with an Early Pliocene Phugatherium record from southern Chile and a much broader fossil history, these finds help scientists infer where water, vegetation and dispersal corridors existed—but they do not provide a complete ecosystem picture on their own.

Why a capybara relative is useful evidence of ancient water

Living capybaras are strongly tied to permanent surface water. They feed on wetland vegetation, use rivers, lakes and marshes for refuge, and generally cannot maintain populations in landscapes without reliable water. Extinct members of the same broader group, Hydrochoerinae, are therefore useful ecological clues. A fossil tooth or jaw can indicate that suitable water and food existed nearby, even when the surrounding landscape has since become dry.

That inference is powerful but limited. A hydrochoerine fossil does not, by itself, specify whether the animal lived beside a river, lake, marsh or seasonally flooded plain. Nor does it prove the entire region had a uniformly wet climate. Scientists get a stronger reconstruction by combining the animal with its sediment, fossil plants, other animals and evidence of ancient water flow.

What the animal can and cannot show

  • It can suggest local habitat: a water-dependent rodent points to accessible water and suitable vegetation within its range.
  • It can extend a known geographic range: a securely dated specimen demonstrates that hydrochoerines occupied that region at that time.
  • It can test climate assumptions: a wetland animal in an area now regarded as hyperarid may reveal that local conditions were substantially different.
  • It cannot identify the whole ecosystem alone: one isolated tooth cannot establish annual rainfall, the size of a wetland or the duration of a wet phase.

This distinction matters in Chile, where the two key records represent different kinds of evidence: an isolated tooth in coastal, marine-associated deposits in the north and a larger continental fossil record in the south.

The Atacama tooth: a wetland clue in a marine-associated deposit

At El Morro in northern Chile’s Atacama Region, researchers found a tooth attributed to Cardiatherium, an extinct close relative of modern capybaras. The tooth is described as roughly 9 million years old. It came from the Bahía Inglesa Formation, in sediments deposited in a shallow marine environment dated broadly between 10 and 7 million years ago.

The setting creates the apparent paradox: the Atacama is now one of Earth’s driest regions, yet a water-dependent rodent relative was present on its coast during the late Miocene. As Priscilla Martinez, the study’s lead author, put it in a Burke Museum report, “Finding a capybara tooth in a marine deposit in what today is one of the driest regions on Earth is just freakish.”

Why the marine context does not mean the animal lived in seawater

The tooth does not indicate that Cardiatherium was a marine animal. Rivers, floodplains and wetlands can occur near a coastline, and bones or teeth from land animals can be carried into coastal sediments by streams, floods or other transport. The marine-associated layer records the environment in which the sediment accumulated, not necessarily the animal’s preferred habitat.

The most reasonable ecological reading is that freshwater or wetland habitat existed close enough to the coast for a capybara relative to live there or for its remains to reach the depositional basin. The exact distance between the animal’s habitat and the shoreline remains uncertain.

Independent evidence for wetter conditions

The Atacama interpretation does not rest on the tooth alone. The report connects the find with several other lines of evidence from the region:

  • Freshwater fish fossils indicate inland or river-connected freshwater environments.
  • Gavial fossils point to aquatic habitats unlike the modern hyperarid landscape.
  • Plant phytoliths, including forms associated with palms and other flowering plants, indicate vegetation requiring more moisture than the present desert surface can normally provide.

These data do not produce a single precise rainfall value. They do, however, make a wetter local setting more plausible than an uninterrupted history of extreme aridity. Mark Clementz, a paleobiology expert quoted by the Burke Museum, summarized the evidence this way: “We have multiple lines of evidence indicative of really wet conditions that are typically associated with capybara today.”

The appropriate conclusion is therefore local and evidence-based: around the time represented by the Bahía Inglesa deposits, parts of the coastal Atacama region supported freshwater-linked habitats. The tooth contributes to that reconstruction; it does not independently rewrite every aspect of the region’s climate history.

Could wetlands have carried hydrochoerines around the Andes?

The Atacama researchers propose that low-elevation wetland corridors around northern South America may have allowed hydrochoerines to spread toward Chile along the coast. In this scenario, animals moved through connected or intermittently connected river and wetland environments rather than crossing the high, arid Central Andes directly.

Why a coastal route is plausible

A route around the northern end of the Andes would solve a geographic problem. Earlier hydrochoerine records were concentrated east of the Andes, while the Chilean tooth lies to the west. A chain of lower-elevation wetlands could provide drinking water, aquatic refuge and vegetation, making westward movement biologically more feasible than a high-mountain crossing.

The proposal also fits the environmental clues at El Morro. If freshwater fish, aquatic reptiles and moisture-demanding plants occupied the region, the coast may have formed part of a broader corridor rather than an isolated desert barrier.

Why this remains a hypothesis

No fossil trackway or continuous series of sites currently demonstrates an individual animal’s route from northern South America to Chile. The proposed corridor is an inference from geography, ecology and the distribution of fossils. Gaps in the fossil record may reflect genuine absence, erosion, burial, limited sampling or the failure to preserve small mammals.

Testing the idea will require additional sites and better age control. Researchers would look for hydrochoerine remains at intermediate coastal localities, sediments showing connected freshwater environments and independent evidence that those habitats overlapped in time. Until such evidence is found, “coastal dispersal corridor” should be treated as a reasoned scenario, not a proven migration path.

Renaico’s Phugatherium: the first formal Chilean hydrochoerine record

Farther south, fossils from Renaico in Chile’s Araucanía Region provide a different kind of evidence. Material from the Early Pliocene Mininco Formation has been identified as the first formal record in Chile of Phugatherium and the first formal record of a hydrochoerine in the country. The fossils are described as a little over 4 million years old.

The discovery is significant because it establishes a hydrochoerine presence west of the Andes in a continental mammal assemblage, rather than relying on a single tooth in coastal deposits. The associated regional record includes fragments of Macrauchenia, another extinct South American mammal.

What the Mininco Formation suggests

An account from Chile’s Subdirección Nacional de Museos describes the Mininco deposits as representing wetlands and open habitats. That combination implies a landscape with permanent or recurring water alongside more open ground, rather than dense forest alone. The description is an environmental interpretation of the formation, not a claim that every part of the ancient landscape had identical vegetation.

The fossils were recovered during paleontological monitoring connected with construction of Parque Eólico San Gabriel and are curated at the Museo de Historia Natural de Concepción. Their institutional importance extends beyond the individual specimens: museum curator Carla Navarrete noted that “muchas de las piezas paleontológicas que aquí custodiamos son fundamentales para comprender el pasado del territorio y de la fauna que habitó hace millones de años atrás”.

Why Renaico changes the geographic picture

The Renaico material confirms that hydrochoerines occupied the Chilean Central Depression by the Early Pliocene. The study abstract describes this west-of-Andes occurrence as biogeographically significant and unexpected in light of the previously better-known eastern-Andes records.

It does not, by itself, identify the animals’ point of origin or prove that they arrived through the northern coastal route proposed for the Atacama region. The Renaico record demonstrates presence; the route and timing of dispersal remain questions for broader sampling.

How the two Chilean records compare

Evidence El Morro, Atacama Region Renaico, Araucanía Region
Approximate age Late Miocene; the tooth is described as roughly 9 million years old, from deposits dated between 10 and 7 million years ago. Early Pliocene; the fossils are described as a little over 4 million years old.
Material One tooth attributed to the extinct capybara relative Cardiatherium. Fossil remains identified as Phugatherium, with associated continental mammal material.
Depositional setting Shallow marine-associated sediments in the Bahía Inglesa Formation. Continental sediments of the Mininco Formation.
Environmental implication Supports wetter local conditions when combined with freshwater fish, gavial fossils and plant phytoliths. Consistent with wetlands and open habitats described for the formation.
Biogeographic value Adds evidence for a hydrochoerine on the Pacific side of the Andes and motivates a possible coastal corridor. Establishes the first formal Chilean record of Phugatherium and a hydrochoerine in the country’s continental fossil record.
Main uncertainty The specimen is isolated, and the dispersal route is inferred rather than directly observed. The Mininco Formation remains under-studied, so its detailed paleoenvironment and the broader dispersal history are incomplete.

The wider hydrochoerine fossil story

These Chilean discoveries make sense only within a much longer history. A 2016 synthesis in the Journal of Mammalian Evolution places the hydrochoerine fossil record from the middle Miocene to the present, chiefly in South America. The group includes living capybaras and multiple extinct genera, and the fossil forms were more diverse than the lineages that survive today.

That diversity cautions against treating every fossil as an ancient example of the living species Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. “Capybara fossil” is often convenient popular shorthand, but extinct hydrochoerines differed in anatomy, body size, distribution and perhaps habitat preferences. Taxonomic identification matters because an extinct genus may reveal a broader ecological or geographic range for the group without showing that modern capybaras themselves lived there.

The fossil record also spans temperate and tropical settings. Hydrochoerines were not restricted to one modern climate zone, although their repeated association with water makes wetland access a recurring ecological theme. Their distribution can therefore illuminate both habitat availability and the changing geography of South American landscapes.

How paleontologists turn a fossil into an ecosystem reconstruction

Scientists generally build an environmental interpretation in stages rather than jumping from a specimen to a climate claim.

  1. Identify the animal: Tooth shape, enamel features and other anatomy are compared with living and extinct hydrochoerines. This establishes whether the specimen belongs to a capybara relative and which taxon is most likely.
  2. Date the layer: Geological relationships, associated fossils and other dating methods assign an approximate age. The dates are reported as ranges or estimates because sedimentary records rarely provide an exact calendar day.
  3. Describe the sediment: Grain size, bedding, minerals and fossil orientation indicate whether material accumulated in a river, floodplain, lake, coastal basin or another setting.
  4. Inventory associated organisms: Fish, reptiles, mammals, pollen, phytoliths and wood can reveal water availability, vegetation and food webs independently of the rodent.
  5. Test geographic scenarios: The locality is compared with older and younger sites to ask whether the animal’s range expanded, contracted or shifted as environments changed.
  6. Separate observation from inference: The fossil’s location and anatomy are direct observations; “wetland habitat” is an ecological inference; a coastal migration corridor is a proposed explanation that requires further testing.

This workflow is why the Atacama interpretation is stronger when the tooth is considered alongside plants, fish and gavials, and why the Mininco interpretation remains provisional while the formation receives more study.

What the Chilean discoveries still cannot answer

The records broaden the known geography of hydrochoerines, but several questions remain open:

  • Was the Atacama wet phase widespread across northern Chile or concentrated in river-fed coastal pockets?
  • How continuous were the proposed wetlands, and did they persist long enough to support repeated dispersal?
  • Did hydrochoerines reach Renaico by a northern coastal route, through inland valleys, or by a sequence of routes that changed over time?
  • How many extinct genera occupied Chile, and how closely were they related to one another?
  • What vegetation structure, water chemistry and seasonal conditions characterized the Mininco wetlands?

Answering these questions will require more systematic work in the Mininco Formation, additional sampling of northern coastal deposits and improved comparisons among South American hydrochoerine fossils. New teeth and jaws could refine taxonomy; plant and sediment analyses could narrow habitat estimates; and intermediate localities could test whether a coastal corridor existed at the relevant times.

What capybara fossils reveal overall

Capybara fossils reveal more than the former presence of a familiar rodent. They provide biological indicators of where surface water and wetland vegetation once occurred, help map the changing range of hydrochoerines and expose gaps in assumptions about South America’s past climates. The Atacama tooth points to a wetter coastal setting in a region now defined by hyperaridity, while Renaico establishes a later hydrochoerine presence in Chile’s continental interior.

Taken together with the broader middle-Miocene-to-present fossil record, the discoveries show a diverse and mobile group responding to changing landscapes. They also demonstrate the limits of fossil interpretation: direct evidence identifies an animal and its sedimentary context, ecological reconstruction combines several independent clues, and migration routes remain hypotheses until the fossil record can connect them.
