An S Pen turns a compatible Samsung Galaxy tablet into a handwriting, drawing and screen-annotation tool. You can write in Samsung Notes, navigate menus, convert handwriting into typed text, capture and mark up screen content, and use shortcuts from Air Command. Some pens and tablets also support Bluetooth features such as Air Actions, remote controls, charging and battery-level reporting.
Compatibility is model-specific. Samsung lists S Pen support for selected Galaxy Tab S6 through Tab S12 models, not every Galaxy tablet. The included pen, an S Pen Pro and the Creator Edition do not provide identical features, so check the exact tablet-and-pen combination before buying a replacement or expecting Air Actions.
What an S Pen lets you do
On a compatible Galaxy tablet, the pen works as both an input device and a shortcut controller. The core functions use the pen tip on the screen and do not require a Bluetooth connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWrite, take notes and navigate
- Write directly in Samsung Notes and other supported apps.
- Draw diagrams, mark documents and annotate screenshots.
- Tap, scroll and select interface controls with the pen instead of your finger.
- Use handwriting recognition to enter text in a text field.
Samsung calls the handwriting feature S Pen to text. It is enabled by default on supported software and can be managed in the tablet’s S Pen settings. When active, handwriting in a text field is converted to typed characters, so you can fill in forms or search without opening the on-screen keyboard. Recognition quality and available controls can vary by language, app and software version.

Open Air Command tools
Removing the pen or pressing its button can open Air Command, a panel of pen shortcuts. The exact entries depend on the tablet and its software, but Samsung documents these tools:
- Create note and View all notes for Samsung Notes.
- Smart select to capture a region of the screen or extract content from it.
- Screen write to draw or write over the current screen, then save or share the result.
- Live messages for animated handwritten messages where supported.
- AR Doodle for drawing in an augmented-reality camera view.
- Translate, which shows a translation when you hover over a word.
- PENUP for drawing and coloring activities.
- Creative studio on some newer supported models.
Air Command is a software menu, not the same thing as Air Actions. A tablet may offer the menu and pen-input tools even when it cannot use Bluetooth gestures.
Model-specific creative and AI tools
Samsung’s accessory information for the Galaxy Tab S10+ and S10 Ultra describes writing, drawing, Air Command shortcuts, writing assistance in Samsung Notes and Sketch to image. Those latter features are tied to particular generations and software. Their presence on an S10 accessory page does not establish that every Galaxy Tab, or every S Pen, supports them.
How Air Actions differ from ordinary pen input
Air Actions use the button on a compatible pen together with Bluetooth Low Energy. Hold the button and move the pen in a recognized gesture to issue a command without touching the display. Depending on the app and tablet, gestures can change camera modes, control media, open an app, navigate, invoke Smart select or start Screen write.
Commands are app-dependent: a gesture available in the camera may do nothing in a document editor. Samsung also publishes exclusions, so the ability to write with an S Pen does not prove that Air Actions will work.
Samsung’s current guidance identifies the following tablet families among models whose listed S Pens do not support Air Actions: Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S9 FE+, Tab S10 FE and S10 FE+, Tab S10 Lite, Tab S11 and S11 Ultra, and Tab S12+ and S12 Ultra. The exclusion applies to the documented tablet-and-pen combinations; check the current support page for the exact model and software version.

Bluetooth-related capabilities are separate from the digitizer that detects the pen tip. Samsung notes that newer Galaxy Tab pens without Bluetooth Low Energy do not support pairing, charging, battery-level display or Air Actions, while still supporting pen input and other on-screen functions.
Samsung tablets that support an S Pen
Samsung’s US compatibility guide names the following Galaxy Tab models for S Pen functionality and lists compatibility information for S Pen Pro and Creator Edition. This is a model list, not a claim that every tablet in the Galaxy range accepts an S Pen.
| Galaxy Tab family | Models named by Samsung | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Tab S6 | Galaxy Tab S6 | Verify the exact regional model and the pen supplied with it. |
| Tab S7 | Galaxy Tab S7, S7+, S7 FE | Features can differ between the standard, Plus and FE models. |
| Tab S8 | Galaxy Tab S8, S8+, S8 Ultra | Use the support entry for the specific screen size and edition. |
| Tab S9 | Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra, S9 FE, S9 FE+ | The FE models are listed as Air Actions exclusions in Samsung’s guidance. |
| Tab S10 | Galaxy Tab S10+, S10 Ultra, S10 FE, S10 FE+, S10 Lite | Samsung does not name a standard Tab S10 in this list; do not infer support for an unlisted model. FE and Lite models are listed as Air Actions exclusions. |
| Tab S11 | Galaxy Tab S11, S11 Ultra | Samsung’s current list identifies these models, while its Air Actions guidance lists them as exclusions. |
| Tab S12 | Galaxy Tab S12+, S12 Ultra | Both are listed as Air Actions exclusions in the cited guidance. |
Samsung’s separate tablet overview describes coverage beginning with Tab S7 and newer models, while its pen-compatibility page includes Tab S6. The safest approach is to use the named model list and then verify your tablet’s full model number, region and software version on Samsung’s support pages. Availability and menu names can change by market and update.
For the current US compatibility table, see Samsung’s S Pen compatibility guide.
Choosing between the included pen, S Pen Pro and Creator Edition
The pen that ships with a tablet is designed around that tablet’s digitizer and software. Samsung says, “To ensure optimal performance and access to all S Pen functionalities, please use only the S Pen specifically designed for your tablet model.” An optional pen can be useful, but it is not automatically an upgrade for every feature.

| Pen supplied for the tablet | Writing, drawing, navigation and the tablet’s supported Air Command tools. | Bluetooth, charging and Air Actions depend on the particular tablet generation and included pen. |
| S Pen Pro | Bluetooth and Air Actions capabilities in general, plus compatibility with many Galaxy Tab models listed by Samsung. | Samsung documents model-specific Air Actions exclusions. Confirm the exact tablet before purchase. |
| Creator Edition | Pen input for compatible tablets, with a design aimed at drawing and creative work. | It has no Bluetooth and no Air Actions, so it cannot provide remote gestures, pairing or battery reporting. |
The S Pen Pro is an optional replacement or second pen for readers whose exact tablet appears in Samsung’s compatibility table and who need its particular physical design or Bluetooth functions. It is not required for basic handwriting on a tablet that already supports its supplied S Pen. Conversely, buying a Pro does not override a tablet-level Air Actions exclusion.

Samsung also distinguishes the S Pen Fold Edition, which is intended for certain foldable phones, from the broadly compatible S Pen Pro. Do not select a pen based only on the word “S Pen”; read the model-specific table first.
How to check your tablet before buying a pen
- Find the exact tablet model. Open Settings > About tablet and record the model name and model number. Names such as “S9 FE” and “S9” are not interchangeable.
- Open Samsung’s compatibility page. Compare that model with the entries in the S Pen compatibility guide, rather than relying on a retailer’s generic description.
- Decide which functions you need. For handwriting, drawing and screen annotation, confirm pen-input support. For remote gestures, battery status or charging, also confirm Bluetooth and Air Actions for that exact combination.
- Check the pen type. The tablet-specific pen, S Pen Pro and Creator Edition have different hardware. A Creator Edition cannot add Air Actions because it has no Bluetooth.
- Confirm software and region. Samsung’s menus and feature availability can vary with One UI version, language, app and country. Install available tablet updates before troubleshooting a missing command.
Using the main S Pen features
Write or draw in Samsung Notes
Open Samsung Notes, choose a note and select a pen tool. Write with the tip; use the eraser control or the pen’s supported shortcut to correct marks. If you need typed text, tap a text field and write with S Pen to text instead of bringing up the keyboard.
Annotate the current screen
Open Air Command and choose Screen write. Mark the visible page or image, then use the save or share control shown by the tablet. Screen write captures what is on screen at that moment; it is not a general-purpose editor for content that is off-screen.

Capture part of a screen
Choose Smart select from Air Command, select a shape or region and follow the on-screen actions to save, share or extract the selection. The available extraction options depend on the content and software.
Use hover translation
Choose Translate in Air Command and hover over a supported word without touching the display. Language choices and app support determine whether a translation appears.
Set up Air Actions when supported
Open the tablet’s S Pen settings and Air Actions controls, then review the permitted gestures and app commands. Charge or pair the pen only when the model requires it. If the tablet is one of Samsung’s listed exclusions, these controls may be absent even though writing works normally. Samsung’s instructions are collected in its Air Actions support article.

Troubleshooting common compatibility problems
The pen writes, but Air Actions do not work
This is usually a feature distinction, not a defective tip. Check whether the tablet or pen is listed as an Air Actions exclusion, whether the pen has Bluetooth Low Energy, and whether it is paired and charged. A non-Bluetooth pen can continue to write while lacking every wireless function.
Recommended Free Tools
The tablet does not show a battery level
Battery reporting requires a compatible Bluetooth pen and tablet. A Creator Edition and other non-Bluetooth pens do not report a charge level. Do not infer a fault from the missing indicator until the pen’s hardware is confirmed.
A replacement pen feels wrong or does not respond
Verify that the replacement is designed for the tablet and that its nib is seated correctly. Samsung recommends the model-specific pen for full functionality. If you selected S Pen Pro or Creator Edition, recheck both the tablet entry and the desired feature in the compatibility table.
An Air Command shortcut is missing
Air Command entries vary by model, software and region. Install updates, open the S Pen settings to review the shortcut list, and check whether the feature is limited to a newer generation. Creative studio, writing assistance and Sketch to image are not universal S Pen functions.
Air Actions work in one app but not another
That behavior can be expected. Gesture commands are assigned per compatible app, and Samsung’s available commands include different controls for camera, media, navigation and capture tools. Review the app-specific list instead of assuming every gesture is global.
Where to verify current support
Samsung’s support pages are the authoritative place to check a specific tablet, pen and feature combination:
- Learn about the different Samsung S Pens — compatibility tables and pen distinctions.
- Master the S Pen of your Galaxy Tablet — tablet pen functions, S Pen to text and Air Command guidance.
- Use S Pen Air actions to control your Galaxy phone or tablet — gesture behavior and exclusions.
- Get accessories for your Galaxy Tab S10+ or S10 Ultra — generation-specific accessory and creative-feature information.
Bottom line
An S Pen is useful for handwriting, drawing, navigation, notes, screen capture and annotation on a supported Galaxy Tab. Samsung’s named compatibility list spans Tab S6, S7, S8, S9, S10, S11 and S12 models, but the exact edition matters. Treat pen input as the baseline; verify Bluetooth, charging, battery reporting and Air Actions separately, and choose the pen designed for your specific tablet whenever possible.
