PlayStation Store wallet funds pay for eligible digital Store purchases: games, downloadable content, pre-orders, in-game items and currency, season passes, subscriptions such as PlayStation Plus, and some other digital services. Your wallet is charged first; if it does not cover the full amount, PlayStation may request another accepted payment method for the difference. Exact availability and rules depend on your account region and the current Store terms.
What PlayStation Store wallet funds can buy
A wallet balance is intended for digital purchases made through PlayStation Store. The product page still controls what you receive, which platform is supported, and whether a purchase is a complete product or an add-on.

| Digital games | Full PS4 or PS5 game downloads and digital editions | Confirm the edition, console compatibility, age rating and any stated system requirements. |
| Add-ons and DLC | Expansion packs, downloadable missions, bonus content and other game add-ons | Check which base game and edition are required. Some add-ons are platform-specific. |
| Pre-orders | Digital games or other content offered before release | Pre-order cancellation and refund rules are separate from the general game-and-DLC policy. |
| In-game purchases | Virtual currency, consumables, skins, emotes, bonus levels and experience boosts | Read exactly what is included and whether the item is for one game, account or platform. |
| Season passes | Bundles that provide access to planned or released future content | Included DLC may have to be downloaded separately, and the pass may not include every item shown in a game’s wider catalog. |
| Subscriptions | PlayStation Plus and other eligible recurring Store subscriptions | A payment method can still be required on the account, even when you intend to use wallet funds. |
| Other digital services | Eligible digital content and, under the US PlayStation Network Terms of Service, certain third-party services | The terms do not say that every third-party service accepts wallet funds. Availability is region- and service-dependent. |
Digital games and add-ons
Wallet funds can be used for digital games, downloadable content and other add-ons listed in PlayStation Store. Before confirming, verify whether you are buying a PS4 version, a PS5 version, a cross-generation entitlement or a particular deluxe edition. An add-on can require a specific base game or regional edition, so the description matters more than the item’s title alone.
Pre-orders
PlayStation Store supports pre-orders for digital content. A pre-order is not automatically treated like an ordinary completed game purchase for refunds: cancellation timing, whether content has begun downloading, and the particular pre-order terms can change the result. Read the pre-order details and the current refund policy before committing wallet funds.

In-game currency and virtual items
Store purchases can include virtual currency and consumable or cosmetic items. Examples identified in PlayStation’s refund guidance include skins, bonus levels, emotes and XP boosts. These purchases may be delivered to a game account rather than appearing as a separate downloadable file, so check the game, platform and account shown at checkout.
Season passes
A season pass generally bundles access to future content releases. Buying the pass does not necessarily install every included expansion immediately. PlayStation notes that DLC covered by a pass may need to be downloaded separately when it becomes available. Keep the pass and the relevant base game on the same account where the listing requires that relationship.
Subscriptions, including PlayStation Plus
Wallet funds may pay for a subscription or its renewal. PlayStation’s US terms state: “If you have funds in your PSN Wallet, you may use those funds to complete a purchase or renew a subscription.” However, PlayStation’s wallet guidance also warns that a payment method may still be required for a subscription. That requirement can apply even when the wallet contains enough for the current charge, because recurring billing needs a backup or authorized payment source under the account’s rules.

How the wallet is charged at checkout
Wallet funds are applied before another payment method. The practical result depends on the total price, taxes where applicable, the currency and the payment methods accepted for your account.
- Add the eligible game, add-on, subscription or other Store item to your cart, or choose the item’s purchase option.
- Review the edition, platform, price and any recurring-billing language. For a pre-order or season pass, read the item-specific conditions.
- At payment, let PlayStation apply the available wallet balance. If the balance is smaller than the total, the checkout flow may ask for another accepted payment method to cover the shortfall.
- Confirm the final amount and payment source before completing the transaction. For subscriptions, make sure the account has the payment method PlayStation requires for recurring charges.
A wallet balance that is merely close to the price is not the same as a fully funded purchase. If the total exceeds the balance and no usable secondary method is available, the transaction may not complete.
Account, family and region rules
Child accounts use the family manager’s wallet
Child accounts do not have separate wallets. An eligible purchase made by a child account uses the family manager’s wallet and is constrained by the family spending limit. PlayStation says the default monthly limit is zero, so the family manager must set an appropriate limit before a child can spend against that wallet. The limit is a control on the child account; it does not create a separate child balance.

Voucher and account regions must match
When you add funds with a PlayStation Store gift card or another Store voucher, the voucher’s country or region must match the country or region of the account. A code bought for a different market may fail to redeem even if the currency or denomination looks familiar. Check the region printed in the voucher’s description before buying it, especially when purchasing from a retailer serving multiple countries.

Catalogs and rules vary by country
The wallet and voucher explanations in PlayStation’s US support guidance and US terms do not automatically establish the rules for every country. Purchase categories are also described in an official Singapore support page. Store listings, taxes, available payment methods, subscription products, voucher availability, third-party services and legal refund rights can differ by account region. Use the support and Store terms for the region attached to your account when a local rule matters.
How to add money to your wallet
An adult account can add funds with an eligible payment method or a PlayStation Store gift card. PlayStation says Store vouchers, including wallet-funding vouchers, are sold by various retailers. The retailer, denomination and price are not universal, so verify those details at the point of sale rather than assuming a particular listing is available.

- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- Sign in to the adult PlayStation account that will hold the balance.
- Open the account’s Store wallet or add-funds option on your console, the PlayStation app or the web Store. The wording and menu location can vary by device and region.
- Choose an eligible saved payment method or select the option to redeem a PlayStation Store voucher.
- Enter the voucher code exactly as issued, then confirm the account region and the amount being added.
- Check the wallet balance before returning to the purchase. If you used a voucher, keep the receipt until the code has redeemed successfully.
Do not buy a voucher first and investigate the region later. A region mismatch is one of the most common reasons a valid-looking code cannot be redeemed.
Refunds: wallet top-ups and Store purchases are different
Adding money to the wallet and spending that money are treated as separate events. PlayStation generally says added wallet funds are non-refundable. That means an unused balance normally cannot be exchanged back for cash simply because you changed your mind.
Refund eligibility for the content bought with the balance depends on the purchase category. For games and DLC, the general checklist includes requesting the refund within 14 days and not having downloaded or streamed the content. Exceptions can apply, including faulty content. Subscription and pre-order rules are different, and purchases funded by a voucher can have payment-method-specific limitations. Check the current policy for the exact item and region before submitting a request; do not assume that a game, an in-game item and a subscription follow identical deadlines.

What wallet funds generally cannot do
- They are not general cash. PlayStation says wallet funds have no value outside the Store.
- They are generally not transferable. You normally cannot move a balance to another account or withdraw it, except where applicable law requires otherwise.
- They do not guarantee every third-party payment. The US terms allow wallet use for certain third-party services, but they do not establish acceptance by every service.
- They are not a substitute for a required recurring-payment method. A subscription can require a card or another accepted method on the account even when the wallet should fund the charge.
- They do not bypass regional restrictions. A wallet balance or voucher cannot be assumed to work across account regions.
The Store is the relevant boundary: wallet funds are designed for eligible digital Store content and services, not unrestricted purchases from unrelated merchants or a general bank account.
Choosing what to buy with a limited balance
| If you are deciding between | Check first | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| A full game and an add-on | Edition, platform and base-game requirement | An add-on may be unusable without the matching game or edition. |
| A one-time purchase and a subscription | Whether the charge recurs and whether a payment method is required | A wallet can cover today’s charge without satisfying the account’s recurring-billing requirement. |
| Virtual currency and a season pass | What is delivered now versus later | Currency and consumables are usually immediate in-game items; pass content can arrive over multiple releases and require separate downloads. |
| A pre-order and an available game | Release date and pre-order refund conditions | Pre-order rules are not the same as the general games-and-DLC checklist. |
| Using a voucher and paying directly | Voucher region and account region | A mismatched code can be unusable even when the purchase itself is available in your market. |
Troubleshooting a wallet purchase
The wallet does not cover the total
Review the final total, including any applicable tax, then add an accepted payment method or add more funds. PlayStation applies the wallet first, but it cannot complete a shortfall without an approved second source.
The voucher will not redeem
Stop retrying random codes and check the voucher’s country or region against the account. Confirm that every character was entered correctly and retain proof of purchase. If the regions match and the code still fails, use the regional PlayStation support channel with the code and receipt details.

Ask the family manager to check the child account’s monthly spending limit. Remember that the default is zero and that the child account draws from the manager’s wallet; adding money to a separate child wallet is not an option because child accounts do not have one.
A subscription asks for a card anyway
This can be expected. PlayStation may require a payment method for recurring subscriptions even when wallet funds are available. Add or confirm an accepted method on the account, then review the renewal terms before completing the subscription.
You want to cash out or move the balance
Wallet funds are generally non-refundable and non-transferable and have no value outside the Store. Treat a top-up as money committed to eligible Store spending, subject only to the exceptions required by applicable law.
Quick Recap
A quick checklist before spending wallet funds
- Is the item digital Store content or an eligible Store service?
- Does the edition match your console, base game and account?
- Is this a one-time purchase, a pre-order or a recurring subscription?
- Does your balance cover the complete total, or do you have another accepted payment method?
- If you are using a voucher, does its region exactly match your account?
- Have you read the refund conditions for this category before downloading, streaming or consuming the content?
- If a child account is involved, is the family manager’s spending limit high enough?
