A 1.54-inch ESP32 e-paper display can become a low-power clock, room sensor, Wi-Fi status card, electronic label, portable dashboard, note or badge device, QR information card, Morse tool, or audio-enabled experiment. The best projects show information that can remain on screen for seconds, minutes, or longer rather than trying to reproduce smooth video.
Two very different hardware paths fit this description. Waveshare’s integrated ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 combines a 1.54-inch 200 × 200 display with an ESP32-S3, wireless connectivity, sensors, a real-time clock, storage and audio circuitry. A separate 1.54inch e-Paper (E) is a 240 × 240 SPI display module or raw panel that needs an external controller. Choosing the correct product and revision is the first step, because a tutorial for one is not automatically compatible with the other.
What the two hardware options actually are
“1.54-inch ESP32 e-paper display” is a project description, not a unique specification. Screen size alone does not identify the resolution, controller, wiring, color mode or included peripherals.

The integrated board is the most convenient starting point when you want a complete handheld or desktop device. Waveshare lists a 1.54-inch, 200 × 200 display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a real-time clock, an SHTC3 temperature and humidity sensor, a TF-card slot, USB, expansion interfaces and audio circuitry. The board also has microphone and codec circuitry plus a speaker header, making voice capture or playback experiments possible without designing an audio circuit from scratch. See the official board documentation for the current feature list.

There are V1 and V2 revisions, and Waveshare states that their example programs are not interchangeable. Some listings also differ by touch support and by whether a lithium battery is included. Confirm the revision, touch or non-touch variant, and battery configuration before downloading code or designing an enclosure.
Standalone 1.54-inch SPI module
The separate 1.54inch e-Paper (E) is intended to be connected to an ESP32 you already own or to another microcontroller. It is available as a display with a driver board or as a raw panel. The documented resolution is 240 × 240, and the interface supports 3-wire or 4-wire SPI. You must match the panel family, controller, logic voltage, pinout and example code to the exact module. The product overview distinguishes the raw and driver-board versions.
| Path | Display and controller | Best fit | Checks before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated ESP32-S3-ePaper-1.54 | ESP32-S3 board with 200 × 200 display and onboard peripherals | First build, wireless device, sensor readout or audio experiment | V1 or V2; touch variant; battery inclusion; matching examples |
| Standalone 1.54-inch SPI module | 240 × 240 panel on a driver board, or raw panel, used with an external controller | Adding e-paper to an existing ESP32 project | Exact module family, monochrome or multicolor type, raw versus driver board, voltage, controller and SPI example |
Other 1.54-inch panels can have different resolutions and color capabilities. Treat “1.54-inch” as a size, not a part number.
Projects that suit this display
Desk clock and status card
Use the integrated real-time clock to show time even when the network is unavailable, then use Wi-Fi to synchronize or retrieve selected status information. A useful layout might contain the time, date, one connectivity indicator and one short message. Because e-paper retains an image after power is removed and does not require a backlight, it works well as a screen that changes only when the minute, alarm state or status changes. The display-retention behavior is documented for the integrated board and the standalone module by Waveshare.
A status card can show a server state, calendar entry, transit note or household reminder. Keep the payload compact: a 200 × 200 screen has limited room, and a full dashboard of tiny text is harder to read than a few prioritized fields.

Temperature and humidity monitor
The integrated board’s SHTC3 sensor can provide room temperature and humidity readings. Add a comfort label, min/max values or a small history summary, but do not present the readings as laboratory-grade measurements without calibration data. The board documentation establishes the presence of the sensor, not the accuracy of a finished enclosure in every environment.
A sensible update policy is to sample periodically, refresh only when values change materially, and let the display remain static between readings. If you use a standalone panel, you will need a separate sensor and must account for its wiring and software library.

The ESP32-S3 can receive information over Wi-Fi and render a compact summary. That makes the board suitable for an electronic shelf label, project status tag, network indicator or appliance card. Waveshare describes the integrated board for IoT terminals and electronic tags. The implementation still depends on the service you choose: authentication, API format, network recovery and update scheduling are your responsibilities.
For a label, store the last valid image or text locally so a temporary network outage does not leave the device blank. For a dashboard, display a timestamp showing when the data was last updated; otherwise a static screen can be mistaken for current information.
Portable note, badge or information card
A small e-paper panel is effective for information that should remain visible while consuming little display power: a name badge, room sign, event credential, emergency contact card or short note. A TF card on the integrated board can hold images or text assets, while a wireless connection can replace them remotely.

QR or barcode information card
A QR code can turn the screen into a contact card, setup token or offline link. Design the code at a size and contrast that a phone camera can reliably focus on, and leave a clear margin around it. A 1.54-inch screen is better for one code and a short label than for a dense page of mixed text and graphics. If the code contains a credential, treat the display as public: anyone who can photograph it may copy the data.
Audio or voice interaction experiment
The integrated board’s microphone, codec circuitry and speaker header support prototypes that capture a short voice command, play an alert or pair audio with a visual response. This is a development possibility, not a turnkey voice assistant. You still need firmware for recording and playback, an interaction model, storage or network processing, and a plan for feedback while the display refreshes.
Wireless Morse tool or handheld interface
The community showcase includes a wireless Morse project and a watch-style device. These examples suggest useful interaction patterns for a small screen: a few large symbols, short messages and deliberate input. They do not establish that controls are included in every board package. Add buttons, a rotary control, touch hardware or another input method appropriate to your selected variant.
Why e-paper changes the design
E-paper is strongest when the image can stay unchanged. Waveshare states that its panels do not need a backlight and retain displayed content after power-off. That makes a clock, label or sensor summary more natural than a continuously animated interface.

Refresh behavior is model-specific. For the standalone 1.54inch e-Paper (E), Waveshare publishes a 27-second full-refresh figure and refresh power consumption under 40 mW, while warning that actual time and consumption can vary. Those numbers apply to that named product, not to every 1.54-inch panel or to the integrated board. The product specification should be checked for the exact panel you buy.
Do not infer a fixed battery runtime from the display alone. Runtime depends on the complete board, battery capacity, wireless activity, sensor duty cycle, firmware sleep behavior and how often you refresh. No single battery-life number applies to all of these builds.
How to choose the right path
Choose the integrated board when
- You want Wi-Fi or Bluetooth without adding a separate controller board.
- The onboard RTC, SHTC3 sensor, TF-card slot or audio circuitry is central to the project.
- You prefer a documented starting point with USB and expansion interfaces.
- You are building a first prototype and want fewer wiring and voltage decisions.
Choose the standalone module when
- You already have an ESP32 design and only need an e-paper output.
- Your enclosure or existing power system requires a particular panel shape or connector.
- You need the documented 240 × 240 format rather than the integrated board’s 200 × 200 display.
- You are comfortable checking SPI wiring, controller support and logic levels.
Before ordering a standalone unit, decide whether you need the driver-board version or raw panel. A driver board generally simplifies connection; a raw panel places more responsibility on your carrier board and power design. Confirm monochrome or multicolor operation as well as the exact example package. The module manual contains revision-specific information for earlier variants.
A practical build sequence
- Identify the exact hardware. Record the product name, resolution, revision, touch status, color mode and whether a battery is included. Photograph the label or save the product page so you can match it later.
- Select the software framework. Waveshare documents both Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF support for the integrated board. Pick one framework before copying examples; do not mix libraries or pin definitions from a different revision.
- Start with the vendor example. Download the example associated with your exact V1 or V2 board and confirm that a basic image or text screen refreshes. The resources page provides official example and hardware links.
- Verify the display before adding features. Test a full refresh, a partial or incremental mode only if your panel supports it, and a power-cycle recovery. Record how long the selected panel takes and whether any ghosting appears.
- Add one peripheral at a time. For the integrated board, read the RTC, then the SHTC3, then storage, networking and audio. For a standalone module, wire SPI and add an external sensor only after the display is stable.
- Design for stale data. Include a last-updated time, an error state and a retained last-known value. A Wi-Fi failure should produce a clear warning rather than silently leaving an old number that looks current.
- Schedule updates deliberately. Refresh when the information changes, then put the controller or peripherals into the lowest practical power state. Avoid redrawing animated elements that the panel cannot display smoothly.
- Test the finished enclosure. Check viewing angle, connector strain, sensor airflow, button access, radio performance and battery behavior under the actual update schedule. A prototype on a desk can behave differently once enclosed.
For a board-specific ESP-IDF starting point, Espressif’s component registry includes an ESP32-S3 e-paper example with its own pinout and component assumptions. Treat that example as specific to the listed hardware, not as a universal pin map.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the wrong revision example
The most avoidable failure is flashing V1 code onto a V2 board, or the reverse. Recheck the revision printed on the board and use the matching examples. If the screen stays blank, stop changing application code and first verify revision, controller and pin definitions.

Confusing 200 × 200 and 240 × 240
Graphics sized for the integrated board will not map directly to the standalone module. Set the canvas dimensions from the actual product specification and regenerate icons or QR codes at that size.
Assuming every module has the same color and refresh behavior
Earlier and alternate modules can differ in monochrome or multicolor support, controller and refresh characteristics. The phrase “1.54-inch” does not establish any of those properties. Use the exact product manual and avoid copying timing or power figures from another panel.
Expecting a phone-like interface
Frequent animation, scrolling and rapid touch feedback are poor fits for a display whose full refresh can take many seconds. Use large text, deliberate page changes and a small number of states. If the project’s central requirement is smooth animation, choose a different display technology.

The screen’s ability to retain an image can reduce update activity, but Wi-Fi bursts, audio, sensors and the ESP32 itself may dominate consumption. Measure current in the exact sleep, wake and refresh sequence you plan to ship instead of quoting a generic runtime.
Treating community projects as turnkey firmware
The monitor, HUD, note, QR wallet, watch, Morse and e-reader projects listed by Waveshare are inspiration and independent implementations. They may use different controls, libraries, revisions or enclosures. Read their assumptions before adapting code.
Matching projects to the hardware
| Project | Best hardware fit | Core peripherals | Main design risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desk clock | Integrated board | RTC, optional Wi-Fi | Unnecessary frequent refreshes |
| Room monitor | Integrated board | SHTC3, RTC | Overstating sensor accuracy |
| Electronic label | Either | Storage and wireless update | Stale data after a network failure |
| QR information card | Either | Display and optional storage | Code too small or sensitive data exposed |
| Voice experiment | Integrated board | Microphone, codec, speaker header | Assuming audio software is prebuilt |
| Existing ESP32 upgrade | Standalone SPI module | SPI and external controller | Wrong pinout, voltage or controller |
What this display is—and is not—good for
It is a strong fit for information that benefits from persistence, readability and infrequent updates: time, environmental readings, labels, short notifications, codes and compact status summaries. The integrated board adds enough connectivity and peripherals for a self-contained IoT prototype, while the standalone module lets an existing ESP32 gain an e-paper output.
It is not a universal miniature monitor. The two documented products use different resolutions, and the standalone module’s published 27-second full-refresh and under-40-mW refresh figures are model-specific and variable. Neither product specification establishes a universal battery runtime, laboratory measurement accuracy or smooth animation performance. Plan the interface around those limits and verify every electrical and software assumption against the exact revision you own.
