Someone who has your phone number can contact or target you, and may use it as an account identifier or recovery route. The number alone does not prove they can access your accounts. The more serious risk is a SIM swap or number transfer: if an attacker convinces your carrier to move your number to a SIM or account they control, they may receive your calls and texts, including SMS verification codes. The FTC’s SIM-swap guidance and an FCC notice describe this risk.
What someone can do with your phone number
Call or text you
A person with your number can call or message it, including with unwanted or deceptive messages. Caller ID is not reliable proof of who placed a call: numbers can be spoofed. The FCC’s unwanted-call guidance explains caller-ID spoofing and how to complain if your own number is spoofed, blocked, or marked as potential spam.
Use it to target account-recovery or impersonation attempts
A number may serve as an account identifier or recovery contact. It can also make a scam more convincing when combined with other personal information. The FTC warns that information shared publicly can help an identity thief answer account security questions; avoid answers that can be found online or in public records. See the FTC’s guidance on protecting personal information.
Try to take over the number
In a SIM swap, an attacker persuades or manipulates a carrier into activating your number on a SIM or device the attacker controls. Port-out fraud similarly transfers the number to an account at another carrier. If the transfer succeeds, calls and texts intended for you may go to the attacker. They can then use SMS codes to attempt access to accounts that rely on text-message verification. An FCC notice says hundreds of customer complaints to the FCC and FTC in 2023 concerned SIM-swap and port-out fraud; it does not provide a precise count, so that figure should not be read as an exact total. Read the FCC notice.

Can someone hack you with just your phone number?
A phone number by itself is not proof that someone can sign in to your accounts or see your private information. It can help someone contact you, identify an account, or make a targeted impersonation attempt. Account takeover becomes a more direct risk if the attacker also obtains other information or gets the carrier to transfer your number. SMS verification is especially exposed after a successful transfer because the attacker may receive codes sent to that number.
There is no reliable universal answer for what a reverse-lookup or data-broker service will reveal from any particular number. Results can depend on the number’s history and the services consulted; do not assume a number automatically reveals a person’s name, address, location, or account list.

How to protect your number and accounts
Secure the cellular account
- Set a PIN or password on your cellular account. The FTC specifically advises: “Set up a PIN or password on your cellular account.” FTC SIM-swap guidance.
- Ask your carrier what protections it offers against unauthorized SIM changes or number transfers, and whether it can alert you to changes. Names and availability of these features vary by provider. The FCC’s SIM-swap and port-out notice discusses carrier protections.
Reduce what an attacker can use to impersonate you
- Avoid posting your full name, address, and phone number together on public sites unless it is necessary.
- Use unique, hard-to-guess answers for security questions. Avoid answers available online or in public records. If a service forces a weak question, treat the answer like a unique password. FTC guidance on personal information.
- If someone unexpectedly calls claiming an account is at risk, hang up and contact the organization through its known official app, website, or phone number. Do not share verification codes or account details. The FTC’s January 2026 advice on unexpected calls also says not to grant callers remote access to your phone or computer.
Use stronger account authentication where available
For accounts with sensitive or financial information, choose an authentication app or security key instead of SMS when the account supports it. SMS codes depend on continued control of your phone number; an app or key offers an alternative factor that does not rely on receiving a text. A FIDO-compatible security key is an optional physical tool for compatible accounts, not a safeguard for your carrier account or a way to stop caller-ID spoofing. The FTC recommends considering an authentication app or security key if you are concerned about SIM swapping. FTC SIM-swap guidance.
