A private Instagram account limits who can see your posts, Stories, and Reels, but it does not make your whole profile or your wider online presence invisible. People who do not follow you may still see profile details such as your photo and bio, and clues shared elsewhere can sometimes be combined to identify personal information.
What does a private Instagram account actually hide?
Instagram’s explanation of private accounts says people must follow an account to see its posts, Stories, and Reels. Those items also will not appear in Explore or on hashtag pages. That is a boundary around content—not a promise that every part of the account is hidden. Meta’s explanation of private accounts describes those content controls.
The UK Safer Internet Centre says a profile picture and biography can remain visible to anyone. A non-follower must send a follow request to see posts, the follower list, or the following list. People who do not follow you can also send you a photo or video directly. Its Instagram guidance also warns that content shared to another social network is subject to that network’s settings.

What did the 2026 investigation find—and what does it not prove?
In an investigation published on 12 August 2026, Compare the Market commissioned Global Protect Risk & Intelligence to examine publicly available information about nine UK volunteers. The investigator identified home addresses for seven, including four volunteers whose Instagram profiles were private. The report also says internal floor plans were found for four properties and one volunteer was confirmed to be away on holiday. These are findings from a small commissioned investigation, not estimates of how often private Instagram users can be identified. They do not show that the investigators accessed restricted Instagram posts.

The report describes clues accumulating across sources: information posted by friends and family, location details, property features visible in photographs, and other information available online. As Colin Crowden, Intelligence Director at Global Protect Risk & Intelligence, put it: “Our investigation showed how information that appears harmless in isolation can become much more revealing when viewed alongside other publicly available information. This isn’t about any one post creating a security risk; it’s about how different pieces of information can build up over time.”
The report also gives examples of how long the work took: the fastest address was identified in 15 minutes, with a first lead after 50 seconds; the slowest took 18 hours, with a first lead after six hours. How can you reduce what your account and other sources reveal?
These steps address different kinds of exposure. A private setting limits access to Instagram content; it cannot control what other people post or erase information already available elsewhere.

- Review your account’s privacy setting and make sure the account is private if that is the level of access you want.
- Review approved followers. Remove people who should no longer see your posts, or block them if you do not want them to follow or contact you.
- Consider what your profile photo and bio reveal, since they may remain visible to non-followers.
Limit location and property clues
- When practical, wait until you are home before posting holiday photos or other real-time travel updates. A post made during a trip can signal that your home may be empty.
- Disable location tagging where you do not need it, and review location access in your phone’s settings.
- Before sharing a photo, look for details in the background: house numbers, street signs, vehicle registrations, uniforms, work IDs, or recognizable landmarks.
- Ask friends and family not to post real-time updates about your trip or identifying views of your property while you are away.
Review what is visible beyond your account
- Search your own name periodically and review public results for unnecessary personal details. Where possible, remove or limit material you control.
- Check whether Instagram posts are also shared to another social network. Your Instagram privacy setting does not determine who can see a copy posted elsewhere.
- For the separate task of securing an empty home, the report suggests ordinary measures such as setting lights on timers, securing doors and windows, setting an alarm, and asking a trusted neighbor to collect packages. These steps do not change what people can see on Instagram.
What the survey figures can—and cannot—tell you
Compare the Market says Censuswide surveyed 3,000 UK adults from 3–9 July 2026. Among the surveyed Instagram users, 50% said they shared holiday updates before or during a trip, 28% often shared location information, and 16% waited until they returned home. These are self-reported responses from that survey, not platform-wide behavioral data.
