Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses can take photos and videos without a phone, Wi-Fi, or mobile data. Those gallery captures remain stored on the glasses until you later import them. The glasses can also check their battery without an active Meta AI app connection when Voice controls were enabled, and they can play audio from a phone over Bluetooth even while the app is disconnected.
Cloud-dependent features are different. Asking Meta AI about what you see, importing captures, installing firmware updates, sharing media, and making app-based calls require a phone, an online connection, or both. The practical boundary is local capture versus phone, app, and cloud services.
The short answer: capture works offline, most smart features do not
There are three separate connection questions: whether the glasses are connected to the Meta AI app, whether a phone is nearby, and whether an internet connection is available. Treating them as one “offline” mode leads to incorrect expectations.

- Phone present but Meta AI app disconnected: Bluetooth audio from the phone can still play, and a battery check is available if Voice controls were previously enabled.
- Cloud or account features: Visual Meta AI answers, imports, firmware updates, sharing, and online communication need connectivity.
Meta’s current US support FAQ describes this app-disconnected behavior directly: the glasses can capture photos and videos, check battery level when Voice controls are enabled, and listen to audio from a phone connected over Bluetooth. That statement does not mean the glasses are a standalone music player or an independent internet device.

What works with neither a phone nor internet?
Taking photos
The physical capture controls can take photos while the glasses are disconnected from the Meta AI app and while no internet connection is available. The camera operation is local, so a phone does not have to be in your pocket, paired, or online at the moment you press the capture control.
Recording video
Video capture is also supported in the disconnected state through the glasses’ capture controls. The important qualification is what happens afterward: recording locally does not create an immediate copy on your phone, and it does not automatically publish the video.
Keeping gallery captures on the glasses
Meta says gallery photos and videos stay on the glasses until you choose to import them to a phone. This gives you a useful field workflow: capture first and transfer later when you have the required connection. The available documentation does not establish a phone-free method for browsing, editing, or sharing those files from the glasses themselves.

The official FAQ allows a battery-level check without an active Meta AI app connection, but only when Voice controls were enabled beforehand. If Voice controls were never enabled, do not assume that a spoken battery request will work while disconnected.
What works without the app, but still needs a phone?
Bluetooth audio from a connected phone
The glasses can play audio supplied by a phone over Bluetooth even when they are not connected to the Meta AI app. This is phone-disconnected-from-the-app audio, not phone-independent streaming. The phone remains the source, and the glasses are acting as the Bluetooth audio device.

Because the documented capability is Bluetooth playback from a phone, it does not support claims that the glasses independently store a music library, stream music by themselves, or continue a cloud service without the phone providing audio.
Why Bluetooth and the Meta AI app are separate
A Bluetooth audio link and the Meta AI app connection serve different purposes. The former carries sound from the phone; the latter handles setup, importing, updates, account-connected services, and other app workflows. Losing the app connection therefore does not automatically stop Bluetooth audio, provided the phone remains connected over Bluetooth.

Asking Meta AI about what the camera sees
Visual questions are not processed entirely on the glasses. Meta’s FAQ says the glasses send a photo to Meta’s cloud for AI processing and return an audio answer. That requires connectivity, so a question about an object, scene, text, or other visual subject will not work in a truly offline situation.
Importing captures to a phone
Importing is an app workflow rather than an offline camera function. The FAQ describes a fast connection for imports, including a temporary Wi-Fi network created by the glasses. Until that transfer occurs, the gallery files remain on the glasses.
Firmware updates
Firmware updates also use a fast connection and are not offline operations. Plan updates before a trip if you expect to be away from the phone, app, and required network access.

Sharing photos and videos
Sharing is a separate step from recording. A capture kept on the glasses is neither automatically uploaded nor automatically sent to someone else. The documented sharing workflows involve the app, a phone, or an online service, so sharing cannot be treated as an offline feature.
Video calls and other live communication
Live communication workflows depend on the app, phone, and online service. Recording a local clip does not imply that the glasses can place a call, join a video meeting, or broadcast live without those connections.

How to use the glasses on a phone-free outing
Complete setup before leaving
First-time setup is not phone-free. The official FAQ lists a smartphone, the Meta AI app, wireless internet access, and a Meta account as setup requirements. Complete that process while you have reliable access rather than expecting a sealed-box pair of glasses to operate independently.
Enable the controls you may need
If you want to ask for a battery reading while disconnected from the app, enable Voice controls during setup or while connected. Pair a phone over Bluetooth in advance if you want audio during the outing. These preparations are different: Voice controls affect the battery check, while Bluetooth pairing supplies audio.
Capture during the outing
- Wear the glasses and use the capture button’s documented photo or video control.
- Continue capturing without waiting for the Meta AI app or an internet connection.
- Remember that the files remain on the glasses until you later import them.
- If you need audio, keep the phone connected over Bluetooth; the app itself does not have to remain connected for the documented playback behavior.
Transfer after reconnecting
When you have the phone and a suitable connection again, open the Meta AI app and use its import workflow. The glasses may create a temporary Wi-Fi network for the transfer. Do not remove or reset the glasses before importing if the files are important, because the local copies are your available originals until transfer is complete.

Privacy and the visible capture signal
Local storage does not mean invisible recording. Meta says the front capture LED blinks during gallery capture and has no off switch. People nearby therefore have a visible recording indicator when a photo or video is being captured.
The LED detail also clarifies what local capture does not do: a blinking LED indicates camera activity, not an automatic upload or share. The gallery files stay on the glasses until you choose to import them, while cloud AI and sharing are separate connected actions.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Photos or videos work, but you cannot see them on the phone
This is expected while the glasses are disconnected. Captures are retained locally until you perform an import through the app. Reconnect the phone and complete the import workflow before expecting the files in the phone’s gallery.
Audio stopped after the app disconnected
Check the phone’s Bluetooth connection rather than the Meta AI app first. The documented offline-app audio path requires the phone to remain connected over Bluetooth and to supply the audio stream.

The glasses do not answer a battery request
The app-disconnected battery check depends on Voice controls having been enabled. Reconnect and enable that feature before relying on spoken battery checks away from the phone.

Meta AI does not answer a visual question
That behavior is consistent with the service design: the glasses send a photo to Meta’s cloud and receive an audio response. Restore the required phone and internet connectivity; a local camera capture alone cannot provide the cloud answer.
You expected to share a clip immediately
Recording and sharing are separate. Keep capturing locally, then import through the app and use the connected sharing workflow when the phone and online service are available.
Plan around model, region, and software differences
The capability statements above come mainly from the current Ray-Ban US support FAQ, a dynamic support page. Meta’s storage and LED explanation was published in July 2026. Feature behavior can vary by glasses generation, region, and installed software, so check the support information for your exact model before relying on a particular voice command, import behavior, or service integration.

The safest general rule remains stable across the documented cases: local camera capture is the dependable phone-free, internet-free function; app, account, cloud, transfer, and live-sharing features are not.
