Mavenlink is now part of Kantata, and the product name matters when you ask whether it suits a consulting firm: the former Mavenlink product is now Kantata OX, while Kimble became Kantata SX. Kantata is worth evaluating if you need project delivery, resource planning, time and expense, and financial workflows connected in one professional-services system. That positioning alone does not establish fit for your firm; verify the proposed product, configuration, integrations, cost, and implementation scope against your operations.
What happened to Mavenlink?
Kantata says Mavenlink and Kimble Applications merged to create Kantata Professional Services Automation (PSA). In the resulting product naming, Mavenlink became Kantata OX and Kimble became Kantata SX. A buyer should therefore ask the vendor to identify the exact product, configuration, and package in the proposal rather than relying on the legacy Mavenlink name.
What can Kantata do for a consulting firm?
Kantata’s product materials describe capabilities across resource management, financial management, business intelligence, project management, team collaboration, integrations, and workflows. Its financial-management materials specifically cover project accounting, invoicing, revenue recognition, and forecasting.
Resource and project delivery
For a consultancy, resource planning and project management can connect staffing decisions with active work. The relevant question is whether the system can represent your skills, availability, demand forecasts, and staffing scenarios at the level your firm needs, and whether project managers get useful portfolio visibility and reporting.

Project finances
Assess financial workflows against the way your firm actually operates: billing methods, project budgets, time and expense capture, accounting, invoicing, revenue recognition, and forecasting. A product listing a capability does not establish that it will handle your particular policies or exceptions without configuration.
Collaboration and integrations
Kantata lists collaboration, business intelligence, integrations, and workflows among its capabilities. That does not confirm compatibility with a particular CRM, finance platform, timekeeping tool, or identity system. Validate each connection and workflow your firm relies on.

How does PSA fit a consulting business?
Professional-services automation is intended to support the lifecycle of projects and services, from initiation and planning through resourcing, scheduling, execution, close, and control. Service Performance Insight’s 2025 Professional Services Maturity Benchmark describes PSA as providing the systems basis for that lifecycle. It also treats staffing, demand planning, time and expense, utilization, and project cost controls as relevant parts of the category.

The same benchmark reported Kantata as the most adopted PSA solution among its surveyed firms: 19.1%, representing 74 firms. That is a finding from that survey, not an estimate of Kantata’s share of the entire market and not proof that it will fit a particular consultancy.

When is Kantata worth evaluating?
- Your firm wants project, staffing, time-and-expense, and financial workflows connected rather than managed in separate tools.
- Resource planning, demand forecasting, utilization, or project-cost visibility are important operating needs.
- You can map your billing and project-finance processes to the proposed configuration and test the edge cases that matter.
- Your team is prepared to validate integrations and account for migration, implementation, administration, and training.
If your main need is limited to one isolated function, such as task tracking, a broad PSA platform may involve more process change and implementation work than your firm needs. The available product descriptions do not establish how much work a particular deployment would require.

What should you verify before choosing it?
- Confirm the product in scope. Ask whether the proposal is for Kantata OX, Kantata SX, or another configuration, and get the included modules and workflows in writing.
- Walk through real projects. Use representative projects to test staffing, scheduling, time and expense, billing, project accounting, invoicing, revenue recognition, and forecasting against your actual policies.
- Test your systems. Confirm the specific integrations and data flows needed for your CRM, finance, timekeeping, and identity systems; do not treat a general integrations claim as confirmation of support for your stack.
- Price the full change. Request a current quote and estimate migration, implementation, administration, and training alongside subscription costs. Current pricing and implementation costs are not established by the available public materials cited here.
- Check operational evidence. Ask for references from firms with a similar delivery model and complexity, and validate security requirements and implementation scope before committing.
What do the customer-value findings show?
An October 2025 Kantata-sponsored IDC business-value brief describes five in-depth customer interviews. Because the study was sponsored by the vendor and involved only five customers, it is limited evidence; it should not be treated as an independent guarantee of results or as a prediction of what another firm will achieve.
