Infrared reflectography and X-radiography can expose evidence that ordinary light hides: underdrawings, preparatory marks, compositional changes, internal construction and, in some paintings, forms covered by later paint. They do not literally see through every layer, and an image is not automatically proof of an earlier painting, authorship or authenticity.
The most reliable interpretation comes from comparing both methods with visible-light and ultraviolet examination, microscopy, material analysis and knowledge of how the painting was made.
What the two imaging methods actually record
Both techniques create images from radiation that interacts with the object differently from visible light. The resulting picture is a map of contrast, not a normal-color photograph of everything below the surface. Whether a hidden feature appears depends on the pigments, drawing materials, thickness and arrangement of layers, and the support beneath the paint.

| Question | Infrared reflectography (IRR) | X-radiography |
|---|---|---|
| What creates contrast? | Differences in how materials absorb or transmit reflected infrared wavelengths. | Differences in how materials absorb or transmit X-rays through the object. |
| What may become visible? | Some charcoal or graphite underdrawing, preparatory marks and changes in composition. | Internal construction, pigment-related contrast and some concealed painted forms. |
| What controls visibility? | Pigment response, drawing material, paint opacity and the structure of the layers. | Material composition, layer structure and the amount of X-ray transmission contrast. |
| What is a responsible conclusion? | The image suggests a mark or change that must be interpreted with other evidence. | The image records internal contrast that may indicate structure or concealed paint. |
Because the methods respond to different physical properties, they are complementary rather than interchangeable. A feature that is strong in an infrared image may be weak or absent in an X-ray, and the reverse can also occur.

What infrared reflectography can show
Underdrawing and preparation
Infrared reflectography records reflected infrared radiation. Some upper paint layers transmit useful infrared wavelengths, while materials such as carbon black absorb them. When an absorbing drawing lies below paint that is relatively transmissive, the drawing can appear as dark lines or masses in the reflectogram. Charcoal and graphite are common examples of materials that may produce this contrast.
An underdrawing can reveal how an artist planned a figure, transferred a design, established perspective or positioned major contours before applying color. It may be freehand, transferred from a cartoon, or limited to selected passages. IRR does not guarantee that every planning mark will appear; the material must both respond to the infrared wavelengths used and remain distinguishable through the paint above it.
Pentimenti and changes in composition
Artists often alter a work while painting. A hand may move, a head may be turned, or an object may be enlarged or removed. These revisions are called pentimenti. If the earlier paint or drawing creates a useful infrared contrast, IRR can suggest where the composition changed. The image may show an earlier contour beside the final one, a darkened passage indicating a covered form, or an alignment that differs from the visible design.
Such evidence describes a physical change in the object; it does not by itself explain why the artist made the change or when it occurred. A revision could have been made during the original session, after a pause, or during a later campaign of work. Conservators compare the infrared feature with visible paint edges, cross-sections, microscopy and historical information before assigning meaning.
Why a dark infrared feature is not automatically a drawing
Darkness in a reflectogram has more than one possible cause. Getty’s historical-painting research cautions that a broad dark area may be paint material rather than an underdrawing. A dense pigment in the upper layer can absorb infrared and mimic the appearance of a line beneath the surface. The shape, sharpness, relation to visible brushwork and behavior in other images all matter.

Conversely, an absent line is not proof that no underdrawing exists. A drawing made with a material that does not absorb the relevant wavelengths, or one covered by an infrared-blocking pigment, may remain invisible. IRR therefore supplies evidence about material contrast, not a complete inventory of every hidden mark.
What X-radiography can show
Internal structure and material differences
X-radiography is a photographic or digital record of how X-rays pass through the painting. Areas containing materials that absorb more X-rays appear different from areas that transmit more. The image integrates information through the thickness of the object, so it can reveal features in the support, ground and paint that are not separated by depth in the way a normal photograph is.
Changes in a wooden panel, joins, nails, repairs or dense ground can contribute to the radiograph. On canvas, the weave and local changes in paint density may be visible. Pigments containing elements that strongly attenuate X-rays can create recognizable patterns, while low-density or thin passages may contribute little contrast.
Concealed forms and earlier paint
When an earlier painted form contains materials that produce a different X-ray response from the layers above it, the form may emerge in the radiograph. This can include a figure, an object or a broad compositional arrangement beneath the visible image. The result is not a color image of the earlier state. It is a superimposed map of X-ray absorption, and several layers can overlap in the same area.
For that reason, an X-ray feature must be tested against the painting’s visible design and construction. A bright shape might be a dense pigment, a ground feature, a repair or a support element rather than a hidden figure. Additional imaging, targeted sampling or microscopic examination may be needed to distinguish these possibilities.

X-radiography is not X-ray fluorescence imaging
X-radiography and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging spectroscopy both use X-rays but answer different questions. Radiography records transmission through the object. XRF imaging detects characteristic fluorescent X-rays emitted by elements when the surface is excited, allowing researchers to map the distribution of selected chemical elements. An XRF map can help identify where an element-bearing pigment was used; it is not the same image or measurement as a transmission radiograph.
How conservators examine an old painting
Professional examination is planned around the object’s condition, construction and research question. A typical sequence is:
- Document the visible state. Conservators photograph the painting in normal light, record dimensions and condition, and note labels, repairs, cracks and other features that could affect interpretation.
- Examine the surface under other illumination. Raking light can emphasize texture and raised or abraded areas. Ultraviolet-induced fluorescence may help distinguish some varnishes, retouching and surface coatings. These observations provide context for later images.
- Acquire infrared reflectography when an underdrawing or compositional change is plausible. The instrument and wavelength range are selected for the object. Conservators compare the reflectogram with the visible image rather than reading it in isolation.
- Acquire an X-radiograph when internal construction or dense material contrast is important. Exposure and positioning are controlled by trained staff using professional equipment and radiation-safety procedures. The result is interpreted as a projection through the whole object.
- Add targeted analysis. Microscopy, paint cross-sections, elemental mapping such as XRF imaging spectroscopy, or other methods can test whether a suspected line is a drawing, a paint boundary, a repair or a support feature.
- Integrate the evidence. Conservators and art historians compare all observations with the painting’s technique, materials, history and related works. Conclusions are stated with the level of certainty the evidence supports.
This workflow explains why a single dramatic image should not be treated as a final answer. Each technique samples a different property of the object, and the interpretation becomes stronger when independent observations agree.
Why a hidden feature may not appear
- Infrared-blocking pigments: Some upper layers prevent the infrared wavelengths from reaching or returning from a mark below.
- Non-absorbing drawing materials: A preparatory line made from a material with little relevant infrared contrast may blend into the surrounding layers.
- Layer thickness and overlap: A thin mark can be masked by a thick or optically dense passage, while several forms can overlap in an X-ray projection.
- Material similarity: In radiography, an earlier form and the paint above it may absorb X-rays similarly, leaving little contrast.
- Support interference: Wood structure, canvas weave, joins and repairs can create patterns that complicate the reading of paint.
- Image quality and coverage: Focus, detector performance, exposure and the portion of the painting examined affect what can be resolved.
Consequently, “nothing visible” means only that the feature did not produce detectable contrast under that examination. It does not establish that no earlier design or underdrawing exists.
How to read an apparent hidden image without overclaiming
Start with the physical question
Ask what the signal represents before naming what it depicts. In an IRR, is the dark passage line-like and consistent with a drawing material, or broad and connected to visible paint? In an X-ray, does the shape follow pigment density, the support, a repair or a plausible compositional form?

Check whether independent evidence agrees
A proposed underdrawing is more persuasive when its contours align with exposed paint edges, microscopic evidence or another imaging mode. A suspected concealed figure should be tested against the X-ray’s material contrast and the painting’s layer structure. Agreement does not eliminate uncertainty, but it reduces the chance that a support feature or dense pigment has been mistaken for an image.
Separate observation from interpretation
“A dark diagonal appears in the reflectogram” is an observation. “The artist changed the arm position” is an interpretation that requires comparison with the visible painting and other evidence. Reports from museums generally distinguish these levels instead of presenting every suggestive shape as a definite discovery.

Research on Johannes Vermeer’s paintings illustrates why multiple methods are used together. In Woman Holding a Balance, false-color infrared reflectance imagery showed freely brushed highlights on a wall that were hidden by the final paint. Other examinations, including XRF imaging spectroscopy and microscopy, contributed information about materials and painting process. The infrared result was one part of a larger technical interpretation, not a standalone attribution test.
A portrait beneath Girl with the Red Hat was first noticed in an X-ray taken in the early 1970s. Later work used clearer imaging, reflectance methods, XRF imaging spectroscopy and microscopic examination to investigate the underlying portrait and its materials. The case shows both the value and the limits of radiography: the original X-ray revealed a significant concealed form, while subsequent methods helped clarify what that form was made of and how it related to the visible painting.
These examples should not be generalized into a promise that ordinary X-ray will identify every pigment or that infrared alone will establish who painted a work. They show how a finding becomes meaningful when different observations are combined.

What imaging can—and cannot—prove
Infrared and X-ray images can provide strong evidence about a painting’s physical history: planning marks, revisions, layer relationships, support construction and covered forms. They can help conservators decide where to investigate further and help art historians reconstruct aspects of a working process.
They do not, by themselves, prove authorship, authenticity, date or artistic intention. A hidden design may have been made by the named artist, an assistant, a workshop member or a later restorer. Establishing authorship requires broader evidence, including provenance, stylistic study, materials, technique and condition. The National Gallery of Art describes imaging as one aid within collaborative conservation and art-historical investigation.
Can you perform this examination at home?
No validated consumer procedure follows from these museum methods. Professional IRR and X-radiography use specialized detectors, controlled illumination or radiation sources, calibrated settings and trained interpretation. Exposing an artwork to X-rays without appropriate equipment and safety controls can damage the object or endanger people. A consumer infrared camera or phone attachment also cannot be assumed to reproduce a conservation-grade reflectogram or to distinguish underdrawing from paint.

If a painting’s hidden layers are important, the safe route is to consult a qualified paintings conservator or a museum technical department. They can determine whether imaging is appropriate for the object, arrange examinations that minimize risk and explain what the resulting images can legitimately support.
