Home Assistant can turn supported 3D-printer data and controls into dashboard cards, alerts, and automations—but it does not replace the printer’s firmware or act as a universal printer controller. What you can do depends on the printer, its server software, and the entities its integration exposes.
What Home Assistant can add to a 3D printer setup
With OctoPrint, Home Assistant can expose print status, errors, progress estimates, temperatures, current-file details, camera video when configured, and several printer and server controls. These capabilities make it possible to monitor or act on a print from Home Assistant; they are not a guarantee that every printer supports every feature.
The seven ideas below are practical uses of documented integration capabilities. There is no evidence here about how commonly other owners use them, so “unusual” is best understood as less obvious than basic status monitoring—not as a measured claim.

1. Get alerts when a print errors or changes state
The OctoPrint integration provides a current printer-state sensor and binary sensors for Printing and Print Error. Use those entities as triggers or conditions for a Home Assistant notification or dashboard indication. The integration documents the entities, not a ready-made alert automation; choose the notification target and the states that matter to you. Home Assistant OctoPrint integration

- Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
2. See the estimated finish time and progress
OctoPrint can expose estimated finish time, estimated start time, and job-completion percentage. Putting those readings together on a dashboard lets you check how a job is progressing without opening OctoPrint. Treat the finish time as an estimate: it is not a promise that the printer will complete at that moment. Home Assistant OctoPrint integration
3. Monitor nozzle and bed temperatures
The integration lists actual and target temperatures for the tool or nozzle and heated bed. You can place these sensors beside job status to see whether the machine is heating, printing, or cooling.

OctoPrint also exposes writable target-temperature number entities. They can be changed through an entity interaction, script, or automation, but temperature changes should have a printer-specific purpose and appropriate safeguards. Do not treat remote adjustment as inherently safe to run unattended. Home Assistant OctoPrint integration

If a camera feed is configured in OctoPrint, its Home Assistant integration can provide a camera entity. This can make a compatible, configured webcam available alongside the printer’s state. A camera is conditional: the documentation does not establish universal webcam compatibility or recommend a particular model. Repetier’s documentation also describes a camera setup example for a server equipped with a web camera. Home Assistant OctoPrint integration · Home Assistant Repetier integration

5. Put job and server controls in one place
OctoPrint exposes controls to pause, resume, or stop a job, along with buttons to restart OctoPrint, reboot the system, or shut it down. These can be useful from a Home Assistant interface, but they are consequential actions, not safety guarantees. Stopping a job can affect the print, and shutting down or rebooting the server can interrupt access or operation. Make sure a button’s purpose is clear before adding it to a dashboard or automation. 6. Reconnect the printer when OctoPrint returns
Home Assistant documents an OctoPrint connect action and an example that reconnects the printer after the server becomes available. The action can use OctoPrint’s automatic connection settings or optional profile, serial port, and baud-rate values. Adapt the documented example to your own server and printer rather than copying its settings unchanged. Home Assistant OctoPrint connect action

7. Pick an integration that matches your printer and server
OctoPrint is not the only documented route. The right choice depends first on the printer model and firmware, then on the telemetry and controls you need. Check the current integration page before building around a specific route.
| Integration | Documented scope or capabilities | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| OctoPrint | Print state and errors, progress and finish estimates, temperatures, job details, a configured camera feed, job controls, and server controls. | Features depend on the OctoPrint setup and the entities available to Home Assistant. Source |
| PrusaLink | Supports a documented set of Prusa models and firmware conditions. | The latest v1 API endpoints require firmware 4.7.0 or later; MINI/MINI+ requires 5.1.0 or later; older Raspberry Pi-based MK2.5/MK3 requires PrusaLink 0.7.2 or later. These are compatibility requirements, not performance measures. Source |
| Dremel | Integration documentation covers the 3D20, 3D40, and 3D45. | Confirm your exact model and the current integration requirements. Source |
| Repetier | Exposes printer state, temperatures, and job information; its documentation also gives a camera setup example for a server with a web camera. | The integration documentation is marked legacy, so check its current status before adopting it. Source |
Before choosing, verify the exact model and firmware, which readings and controls are exposed, whether camera video is part of your setup, and whether the documented setup and local network credentials suit your environment.

What to check before building a dashboard or automation
- Confirm that your printer and server software are supported by the integration you plan to use.
- After setup, inspect the entities Home Assistant actually receives; do not assume every documented entity will apply to every configuration.
- Use time-to-finish as an estimate, and review any automation that can alter temperatures or control a print.
- Keep pause, stop, reboot, and shutdown actions distinct and deliberate rather than treating them as harmless status buttons.
- Check the integration’s current documentation for compatibility and setup requirements, especially for model- or firmware-specific routes.
