Distant galaxies let astronomers study the Milky Way’s possible past because their light takes millions or billions of years to arrive. By comparing galaxies with similar masses at different distances, researchers trace changes in size, stellar mass, color, star formation, structure and chemical enrichment. This evidence reveals plausible stages in the Milky Way’s development, but it is a population comparison—not a photograph of our own Galaxy at an earlier date.
Why distant galaxies show the past
Light travels at a finite speed. When a telescope observes a galaxy millions or billions of light-years away, it receives light that left that galaxy millions or billions of years ago. The distance therefore corresponds to a lookback time: an estimate of how far into the past the observation reaches.
A nearby galaxy is seen comparatively recently, while a more distant one is viewed at an earlier cosmic epoch. Astronomers can arrange galaxies by distance and compare their properties as a sequence through time. This is not a time-lapse movie of one object. It is more like assembling a large set of historical snapshots from many objects and identifying trends shared by galaxies of similar mass.
The method matters because the Milky Way is a mature galaxy. We cannot leave it and photograph its appearance billions of years ago. Instead, scientists examine distant systems that resemble it in stellar mass or other measurable properties, then ask which changes appear consistently as the universe ages.

How astronomers find Milky Way-like galaxies
Matching by mass and other measurable properties
“Milky Way-like” does not mean an exact twin. Researchers select galaxies with broadly comparable stellar mass and then compare their physical size, shape, color, star-formation activity and stellar populations. A mass-matched sample is useful because galaxy mass strongly influences how a system grows and how rapidly it forms stars.
Hubble’s 3D-HST and CANDELS surveys provided large samples of such galaxies at different redshifts. Redshift measures how much the expansion of the universe has stretched a galaxy’s light; larger redshift generally means a more distant object and an earlier lookback time. One Hubble comparison spans approximately 11 billion years. Another NASA image set presents six snapshots of Milky Way-mass systems with redshifts from z = 0.26 to z = 2.8.
Why a population sequence is not the Milky Way’s personal biography
The galaxies in these samples are analogues, not identified ancestors. A distant object cannot be followed forward through time to prove that it eventually became the Milky Way. Different galaxies experience different merger histories, gas supplies and environments. The comparisons show what stages and processes are common or plausible for galaxies in the Milky Way’s mass range; they do not assign a unique past to our Galaxy.
What Hubble images reveal about growth
Compact early systems
At earlier epochs, Milky Way-mass analogues often appear smaller and more compact than nearby examples. Their light is frequently bluer, indicating that young, massive stars contribute strongly to the observed emission. These systems represent a phase when galaxies were building stellar mass rapidly and had not yet developed the extended, organized appearance familiar in many nearby spiral galaxies.
A period of intense star formation
NASA’s summary of the Hubble sequence describes a pictured “baby boom” phase in which one galaxy was forming stars at 30 times the Milky Way’s present rate. That number applies to the specific illustrated phase and is not a universal rate for every early galaxy or a direct measurement of the Milky Way’s own past.

High star-formation rates require abundant cold gas, which supplies the raw material for new stars. As stars form, they add to the galaxy’s stellar mass and change its light. Comparing the number of stars, the rate at which new stars appear and the distribution of stellar ages helps astronomers determine whether a distant system is in a rapid-growth phase or has begun to settle.
Larger, redder and more organized later systems
In the nearer part of the comparison, galaxies are generally larger and redder. Redder integrated light is associated with older stellar populations, while blue light is weighted toward short-lived, young stars. Later snapshots can also show more developed disk and spiral structure. These changes indicate that galaxy evolution involves both the accumulation of stellar mass and the rearrangement of that mass into different structural components.
| Observable comparison | What the measurement can indicate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Physical size | Whether a galaxy has expanded from a compact early state into a larger system | Distant galaxies are fainter and less finely resolved, so sizes are measured with greater uncertainty than for nearby galaxies |
| Stellar mass | How much material has been converted into stars over time | Mass is inferred from light, stellar-population models and other measurements rather than counted star by star |
| Color | The balance between young, blue stars and older, redder populations | Color can also be affected by dust and observational filters, so it is not a stand-alone age measurement |
| Morphology | Whether a system is compact, disk-like, spiral or otherwise structured | Lower resolution and surface-brightness limits can hide detail in distant systems |
| Star-formation activity | Whether the galaxy is rapidly building new stars or forming them more slowly | Rates depend on the indicator and assumptions used to convert light into a rate |
What color and stellar populations tell us
Color is one of the quickest clues in a galaxy image, but it is not a simple “young versus old” switch. Blue light is prominent when a galaxy contains many hot, short-lived stars formed recently. Redder light becomes more important when older stars dominate. Dust can absorb blue light and make a system appear redder, so astronomers combine color with infrared data, spectra and models of stellar populations.
When a set of similar-mass galaxies becomes progressively redder toward smaller distances, the pattern supports a change in its average stellar population over cosmic time. The result is statistical: it describes the sample as a whole, not every galaxy in it. Some systems may stop forming stars early, while others continue forming stars or experience a later burst triggered by an interaction.
How structure records a galaxy’s development
Images provide more than a color. They show how light is distributed across a galaxy. A compact concentration can signal an early, dense phase. An extended disk suggests that stars and gas have settled into an ordered rotating structure. A central bulge, clumps, bars or tidal features can point to internal evolution or interactions with other galaxies.

NASA’s Hubble comparisons describe a progression from compact youthful systems to larger galaxies with more developed spiral structure. That progression should be read as an observed pattern among analogues, not a mandatory sequence that every Milky Way-mass galaxy follows in exactly the same order. The Milky Way itself contains a disk, a central bulge and a stellar halo, and each component may have a different history.

What spectroscopy adds: measuring what galaxies are made of
Images show appearance; spectra show chemical fingerprints
An image records brightness and broad color through selected filters. A spectrum spreads the light into wavelengths and reveals absorption or emission features produced by particular atoms and ions. Those features allow astronomers to estimate temperatures, ionization conditions, stellar ages and the abundance of elements such as oxygen.
Chemical enrichment is a record of previous generations of stars. The early universe began with mostly hydrogen and helium. Stars manufacture heavier elements, return some of them to surrounding gas through winds and explosions, and make later generations of stars chemically richer. Measuring a distant galaxy’s oxygen abundance therefore helps indicate how many cycles of star formation and stellar feedback have already occurred.
The Webb observation behind SMACS 0723
A NASA report published in January 2023 described Webb observations of three faint, distant galaxies seen behind the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. Their measured properties connected them to nearby “green pea” galaxies, which can be studied in greater detail because they are close to us.
The farthest object in that selected group had an oxygen abundance of only 2% of the abundance measured in a galaxy like ours. This is evidence that the particular object was chemically primitive compared with a Milky Way-like reference galaxy. It is not a universal oxygen value for all early galaxies, nor does it directly measure the Milky Way’s own initial composition.

Webb’s broader galaxy-evolution program uses spectroscopy and imaging to investigate early galaxy formation, stellar populations, the production of heavier elements and mergers. As Webb project scientist Macarena Garcia Marin explained, observations are revealing the early universe in unprecedented detail, raising new questions while remaining consistent with current best models.
How mergers and accretion fit the picture
Galaxies do not grow only by forming stars from their own gas. They can acquire gas, stars and dark matter through interactions and mergers with smaller systems. The debris from those events can populate a diffuse stellar halo around the main disk. Tidal streams and unusual stellar motions in the nearby Milky Way provide evidence that accretion has occurred, while distant-galaxy surveys show how common interactions and rapid growth can be at earlier times.
Simulations connect these observations to possible assembly histories. NASA Advanced Supercomputing reported a model in which the stellar halo of one simulated Milky Way-like galaxy was built from nearly 100 merged or accreted galaxies. That is a result for one modeled system, not a direct census of the Milky Way’s actual progenitors. Its value is that it demonstrates how a complex halo can emerge from many smaller contributors and gives observers patterns to test against real data.
What the evidence can establish—and what it cannot
Strong conclusions
- Milky Way-mass galaxies were generally more compact and actively star-forming at earlier lookback times than comparable nearby systems.
- Galaxy growth involves increases in both physical size and stellar mass.
- Color and stellar-population changes indicate a shift from light dominated by young stars toward systems with larger contributions from older stars.
- Spectroscopy can measure chemical enrichment and identify galaxies with very low heavy-element abundances.
- Interactions, mergers and accretion are important mechanisms in models of galaxy assembly.
Claims that would go too far
- A single distant galaxy cannot be identified as the Milky Way’s confirmed ancestor.
- A sequence of snapshots does not prove that every Milky Way-mass galaxy follows one identical timeline.
- A color alone cannot provide an exact age or star-formation history.
- The nearly 100 progenitors in one simulation cannot be presented as the measured number of galaxies that built the Milky Way’s halo.
- The 2% oxygen abundance measured for one Webb target cannot represent all early galaxies.
How astronomers reconstruct the Milky Way’s history
Scientists combine distant-galaxy comparisons with observations inside and around the Milky Way. The process uses several independent tests rather than relying on one image or one model.

- Build a matched sample. Select many galaxies with stellar masses comparable to the Milky Way and record their redshifts, distances and observational uncertainties.
- Measure structure. Fit sizes and light profiles, classify disks and bulges where resolution allows, and identify clumps, bars or signs of interactions.
- Estimate stellar populations. Combine colors and multiwavelength brightness with population models to infer the relative contributions of young and old stars.
- Measure star formation. Use appropriate ultraviolet, infrared or emission-line indicators and state the assumptions behind each rate.
- Obtain spectra. Identify elemental fingerprints, estimate oxygen and other abundances, and compare chemical enrichment across lookback time.
- Test physical models. Run simulations of gas inflow, star formation, feedback, mergers and halo assembly, then compare their predicted distributions with observed galaxies.
- Cross-check with the local Galaxy. Use the Milky Way’s stellar ages, chemical abundances, motions, satellite galaxies and halo streams to test whether the external-galaxy scenario is compatible with evidence collected inside our own system.
Why the picture remains incomplete
Distant galaxies are faint, and their internal features are harder to resolve than those of nearby systems. Surface-brightness limits can hide extended disks or faint tidal debris. Dust can alter colors. Redshift changes which rest-frame wavelengths fall into a telescope’s filters, and converting light into stellar masses or star-formation rates requires models.

Selection effects also matter. A survey may favor galaxies bright enough to detect or systems with particular colors and shapes. The resulting sample is not necessarily a complete census of every evolutionary pathway. Researchers therefore compare large populations, quantify uncertainty and use multiple instruments and wavelengths.
Webb’s observations are adding detail rather than replacing the basic framework. NASA’s explanation of Webb science notes that new objects and unexpected questions are emerging, but the observations have not contradicted current best models. That combination—new constraints and unresolved questions—is typical of an active field.
The clearest answer to the central question
Distant galaxies reveal how galaxies with Milky Way-like masses can change across cosmic time. Their sizes, stellar masses, colors, shapes and star-formation rates show a broad progression from compact, blue, rapidly growing systems to larger, redder galaxies with older populations and more developed structure. Spectra add a chemical timeline, showing how successive generations of stars enrich their surroundings. Simulations then test whether mergers, accretion and gas-driven growth can produce the observed structures.
