Short answer: A VPN can replace the public IP address and approximate network location that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or another chatbot receives. It cannot hide the prompts, files, images, or other material you intentionally submit, remove information tied to your account, or override location supplied by device permissions, account addresses, connected apps, or security systems.
That distinction matters because “location” is not one data point. A chatbot may have an IP-based estimate, a precise location from an operating system permission, an address saved in an account, and context you reveal in the conversation. A VPN changes only part of that picture.
What a VPN changes when you use an AI chatbot
When a VPN is connected, your chatbot session is routed through the VPN server. The service generally sees the server’s public IP address instead of the public IP assigned to your ordinary connection. Because providers can estimate a broad area from an IP address, the chatbot may infer a different country, region, or city area.

That estimate is approximate and product-specific. It is not a guaranteed statement of where you are, and changing the IP does not force a chatbot to use the VPN server’s location for every feature.

The VPN therefore provides a narrow network-location change, not an anonymous identity. A provider can associate a session with an account, the content of the request, and other signals it uses for product operation, safety, or compliance.
What a VPN does not hide from a chatbot
Your prompts and uploads
A VPN does not conceal the conversation from the chatbot. If you ask for help editing a document, the text reaches the service. If you upload a spreadsheet, image, video, PDF, imported chat, or browser page, that material is processed as part of the request. The encrypted VPN tunnel changes the route between your device and the VPN server; it does not turn the chatbot request into private local processing.
Your account and volunteered identity
Signing in gives the provider an account context that is independent of your current IP address. Names, profile details, subscription status, saved addresses, and information you volunteer in a prompt can all remain relevant after you connect to a VPN. A sentence such as “I am at my office in Manchester” can be more informative than an IP-based estimate.

Location supplied by the device or another service
Browsers and mobile operating systems can ask for location permission. If you grant it, the chatbot or its host application may obtain a precise position through that permission. A VPN does not revoke the permission. Likewise, an integrated mapping or other connected service may provide location through its own account and data path.
Security and eligibility signals
Providers can use IP addresses and other signals to prevent abuse, enforce terms, and determine which features are available in a region. The official documentation does not support a promise that a VPN defeats those controls or guarantees access from a different country. A changed IP can even trigger an additional verification step when it differs sharply from your normal sign-in pattern.

Can ChatGPT see my real location if I use a VPN?
OpenAI says ChatGPT may use an approximate location inferred from an IP address for relevant local results, and specifically notes that a VPN or network location may affect that inference. In practical terms, ChatGPT may see the VPN server’s apparent area rather than the area associated with your ordinary connection.
That does not mean ChatGPT automatically receives your precise physical position. OpenAI describes device location sharing as optional and off by default. It also says it does not separately save or store precise location outside information included in the conversation and context. The exact information available depends on the permissions and features you have enabled.

- State the intended place in the prompt. Include a city, neighborhood, postal code, or region when asking about restaurants, weather, events, regulations, or other local information.
- Review ChatGPT’s location setting. Check the location controls in ChatGPT and confirm whether location sharing is enabled for the feature you are using.
- Check browser permission. In your browser’s site-permission controls, inspect whether the ChatGPT site is allowed to access location. Remove the permission if you do not want browser-based location sharing.
- Check the operating system. On a phone, tablet, or computer, review the operating system’s Location Services permission for the ChatGPT app or browser. Turning off a device permission is separate from connecting or disconnecting a VPN.
- Recheck the result. If the answer still uses the wrong area, tell ChatGPT the correct location explicitly rather than assuming another VPN server will fix the inference.
Connected apps create a separate path
OpenAI says enabled apps may receive basic information commonly shared when visiting a website, including an IP address, device or browser type, language and region settings, and approximate location. Data shared with an enabled app is handled under that app’s own terms and privacy policy. Disconnecting or restricting an integration is therefore a separate privacy action; changing the VPN server does not perform it.
Does a VPN hide your location from Claude?
Anthropic describes two different uses of location information in its consumer documentation. For features that benefit from location, such as web search for local results, Claude may use an IP address to determine a coarse location. Anthropic says users can disable location use for those product features in its privacy dashboard.
Separately, Anthropic says it uses an IP address and other signals to infer a coarse country or region for terms compliance, abuse prevention, and showing features available in a user’s region. That security and anti-abuse inference cannot be toggled off. A VPN may change the IP-based input to that inference, but it does not eliminate the broader category of checks.

What “coarse” means here
Claude’s documentation distinguishes broad country or region inference for safety and availability from location-helping product features. Neither description promises a street-level position from an IP address. Nor does it promise that a VPN server’s country will be accepted as proof that the user is physically there.
Can Gemini still know my location when I use a VPN?
Yes. Google says Gemini Apps may use the general area derived from an IP address or the Home or Work addresses saved in a Google Account for relevant prompts. A VPN can alter the IP-derived part, but it does not change an address stored in the account.
Google defines “general area” as an area larger than 3 square kilometers and containing at least 1,000 users. That is a description of the category Google uses, not a guarantee that every other signal is hidden or that an individual cannot be identified through account and device context.
Precise device location and Google services
With permission, Gemini Apps may process precise device location. Google also says Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Google Maps. A VPN does not withdraw either permission or the account relationship that enables such a service to provide location.
Content Gemini receives
Gemini’s privacy notice lists prompts and shared material—including files, videos, photos, imported chats, and browser-page content—as information provided to Gemini Apps. It also lists device, browser, app, and location information among data collected while people use the service. Changing the network route has no effect on the content you submit or on permissions you leave enabled.

How other AI chatbots may treat a VPN
There is no universal chatbot rule. Each service decides which signals it uses, for which feature, and whether a user can disable them. To evaluate a chatbot that is not covered above, look for four separate questions:
- IP use: Does the service use the public IP for approximate location, regional content, fraud detection, or account security?
- Precise location: Can the app or browser request operating-system location permission, and is that permission optional?
- Account and integrations: Does the account contain a home, work, billing, or profile address? Do connected apps contribute location or device data?
- Control boundaries: Can you disable location for optional features, and which uses remain necessary for security, abuse prevention, or service eligibility?
Read the service’s current privacy and help documentation for the specific plan, platform, and country you use. Policies and controls can differ between a website, a mobile app, an enterprise deployment, and an API integration.

Use this sequence when your goal is to reduce unnecessary location disclosure while using an AI chatbot:
- Decide what you are protecting. If the concern is only the IP-based approximate area, a VPN addresses that one input. If the concern is the conversation itself, do not submit sensitive material merely because a VPN is active.
- Connect the VPN before opening the chatbot. Confirm that the expected public IP and country are shown by the VPN application, then start a fresh session if the service cached an earlier location estimate.
- Audit chatbot permissions. Review the service’s own location controls and turn off optional location use when you do not need local features.
- Audit browser and operating-system permissions. Remove location access for the chatbot site, browser, or app unless the feature genuinely requires it.
- Review account addresses and integrations. Check Home or Work addresses and disconnect connected services that do not need access.
- Minimize the request. Remove unnecessary names, addresses, account numbers, metadata, and identifying details from prompts and uploads. A VPN cannot redact them after submission.
- Expect normal security checks. Keep recovery methods available in case a new IP, country, or device pattern causes a sign-in challenge.
Troubleshooting: why the chatbot still gives local answers
The answer follows an account address
Check saved Home, Work, billing, or profile addresses. This is especially relevant to services that combine account information with IP-based general area.

Inspect both the chatbot’s in-app setting and the browser or operating-system permission. Disabling only one layer may leave another location path available.

The prompt contains the location
Review the conversation and uploaded files for addresses, document metadata, map links, calendar details, or statements that identify where you are. The model can use those clues even when the network location changes.
The service is using a connected app
Temporarily disconnect the integration or consult its privacy controls. An enabled app may receive approximate location and device information under its own policy.
The VPN exit point is misclassified
IP geolocation databases can associate an address with a nearby or entirely different area. Try another server only if changing the approximate IP location is the actual goal; do not interpret the result as proof that the chatbot cannot use other signals.

What a VPN can and cannot promise
A VPN is useful when you want a chatbot to see a different public IP and therefore possibly a different approximate network area. It can also make your network path appear to originate from the VPN server rather than your ordinary connection. Those are meaningful but limited effects.
It cannot promise anonymity, erase account records, conceal prompts and uploads from the chatbot receiving them, revoke device permissions, change saved account addresses, or defeat security and regional-eligibility checks. The strongest privacy approach is layered: use a VPN for the narrow IP concern, control location permissions, limit integrations, and avoid submitting information that the service does not need.
