A streaming TV box is a device that connects to a television—usually through HDMI—and uses the internet to play video or audio through supported apps. “Box” is a broad term: the player may be a separate set-top box or a small stick that plugs into the TV. The device provides access to services; subscriptions, rentals, or purchases may cost extra.

What does a streaming TV box do?

Think of it as a streaming player for your TV. It runs supported apps and sends their video or audio to the television. The player is not the movies, shows, or music themselves, and buying one does not automatically include paid content. Roku explains that its platform provides access to streaming services, whose content may require separate payment (Roku’s explanation of how its platform works).

A Roku Streaming Stick 4K is one example of the stick-style form: it connects to a TV and streams movies and shows over the internet. Other players use a separate set-top-box design.

How does it connect to a TV and the internet?

A typical setup needs a TV with an available HDMI input, power for the player, and internet access. Connect the player to HDMI, select that input on the TV, connect the player to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if supported, and follow its on-screen setup. Exact steps depend on the device and remote. Roku’s setup guidance covers connecting a player to HDMI and the internet (Roku player setup).

The internet connection lets the player stream content and, on Roku devices, receive updates. Roku says an internet connection is needed for both; its guidance also notes that offline viewing after setup is limited to HDMI, cable, or over-the-air broadcasts, rather than streaming through the player (Roku internet requirements).

Is a streaming TV box the same as a streaming stick?

They serve the same basic purpose, but have different physical forms. A streaming stick plugs directly into an HDMI port, while a set-top box is a separate unit connected to the TV. The word “box” is often used loosely for either kind of streaming player, so check the device’s shape and ports rather than relying on its name.

Does a streaming TV box turn any TV into a smart TV?

It can add access to supported streaming apps on a TV with a compatible connection, but it does not necessarily turn the TV into a general-purpose computer. Capabilities vary by platform. For example, Roku says its streaming players provide access to internet video and music but do not let users browse the internet on the television (Roku Support on streaming-player capabilities).

What should you check before choosing one?

  • TV connection and space: Confirm that the TV has a free HDMI input and that the player’s stick or box form fits your setup.
  • Network options: Check whether the player supports Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both, and whether the connection you can provide suits your setup.
  • Picture and sound: Match the player’s supported resolution and audio formats to your TV and the services you use.
  • Apps and region: Verify that the streaming services you want are available on that player in your region.
  • Controls and interface: Consider the remote’s functions, voice control, search, and how easily people in your household can use it.
  • Total cost: Include the device price and any subscriptions, rentals, or purchases. Access to an app does not mean its paid content is included.

For a specific example, Roku says its Streaming Stick 4K works with TVs that have HDMI and recommends high-speed internet, with 25 Mbps recommended for 4K. That is Roku’s recommendation for this product, not a universal minimum for every streaming player or service (Roku Streaming Stick 4K product details).
