A fast radio burst (FRB) is a fleeting radio pulse that travels from beyond the Milky Way to Earth. As it crosses ionized gas, free electrons delay its low-frequency radio waves more than its high-frequency waves. Measuring that frequency-dependent delay gives astronomers a dispersion measure (DM): the total column of free electrons along the pulse’s line of sight.
That makes an FRB a backlight for otherwise faint matter. With a precise sky position and a host-galaxy redshift, astronomers can estimate how much of the signal came from the Milky Way, the burst’s host and immediate surroundings, and material between galaxies. Across many bursts, those measurements reveal how ordinary matter is distributed through the intergalactic medium, galaxy halos, clusters and the larger cosmic web.
The short answer: an FRB is a probe of invisible ionized matter
Radio telescopes record an FRB as a pulse whose lower-frequency components arrive later than its higher-frequency components. That delay is caused by plasma: free electrons interact with the radio waves, producing a cumulative dispersive effect over the entire route. The longer the path and the more electrons it contains, the larger the measured delay.
DM is therefore a line-of-sight integral, not a photograph. It tells astronomers how many free electrons lie in the combined column between source and observer, but not where each electron is located. A single value cannot by itself distinguish a dense region near the source from a diffuse filament billions of light-years away.

The scientific payoff comes when the burst is localized, its host galaxy is identified and the host redshift supplies distance context. Astronomers can then model the Milky Way contribution and estimate the portions arising in the host galaxy, the burst’s local environment and intervening structures. The remainder provides information about ionized material between galaxies, although the separation is never exact.
The 2019 review “Fast Radio Bursts: An Extragalactic Enigma” emphasizes that host and intergalactic-medium terms remain difficult to disentangle. That uncertainty is why a population of localized bursts is more powerful than one unexplained pulse.
How dispersion measure shows there is gas between galaxies
1. The pulse is dispersed by free electrons
An FRB emits radio energy across a range of frequencies. In ionized gas, the lower-frequency part of the pulse experiences a greater delay. A telescope measures the arrival-time difference and determines the DM that best aligns the frequency channels into a single pulse.

2. Astronomers separate the main contributions
The observed DM is treated as a sum of physically different terms:
- Milky Way disk: electrons in our Galaxy’s interstellar medium along the sightline.
- Milky Way halo: hot, diffuse gas surrounding the Galaxy, whose contribution is less certain than the disk’s.
- Host galaxy and local environment: gas in the FRB’s galaxy, its halo, a star-forming region, a supernova remnant or another neighborhood around the source.
- Intervening galaxies, halos and clusters: structures crossed after the burst leaves its host.
- Diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM): low-density plasma spread through the cosmic web.
Models of the Milky Way provide a foreground estimate. A host identification and redshift constrain the source distance and help estimate how much DM could plausibly arise in the host. The remaining uncertainty is assigned statistically to intervening structures and diffuse intergalactic gas rather than being treated as a perfectly known single component.
3. A sample turns columns into a distribution
One sightline gives one integrated column. Dozens or hundreds of sightlines, compared with galaxy surveys and simulations, reveal patterns: whether high-DM bursts preferentially cross groups or clusters, how much gas resides in halos, and how much appears in diffuse regions that emit little light. The result is a statistical map of baryons rather than a literal image of every filament.

Why localization and a host redshift matter
A burst detected without a secure position can still demonstrate dispersion, but its cosmological use is limited. Without a host galaxy, the source distance is uncertain, and a large DM could reflect a nearby dense environment rather than a long journey through intergalactic space.

Interferometric or other high-resolution observations can localize an FRB to a small patch of sky. Optical or infrared observations may then identify a host galaxy and measure its redshift. The redshift does not reveal the DM contribution of each structure, but it establishes the scale of the path and allows models to ask whether the measured electron column is consistent with the expected amount of intervening matter.
Localization also enables follow-up searches for foreground galaxies, groups and clusters. If an FRB sightline passes through a known overdensity, the associated gas can be compared with the excess DM. Conversely, a large DM with little obvious foreground structure can point toward diffuse or poorly observed plasma.
What an FRB can—and cannot—locate along its route
What it can reveal
- An integrated count of free electrons along the line of sight.
- Evidence that a sightline intersects a galaxy halo, group or cluster when the DM and independent observations agree.
- Statistical information about how baryons are divided among galaxies, clusters and the diffuse IGM.
- Changes in the cosmic matter distribution when many localized bursts are combined.
What it cannot reveal by itself
- The exact three-dimensional position of every electron.
- A unique decomposition of DM into host, Milky Way halo and IGM terms for one burst.
- A photograph or direct image of a filament.
- A definitive explanation of what object produced the burst.
The source physics remains an active question. NASA quotes Manisha Caleb of the University of Sydney saying, “What makes fast radio bursts interesting is that we don’t know what generates them. We have theories for what objects produce them, but we don’t have conclusive proof.” That uncertainty about the engine does not erase the better-established propagation information carried by the pulse.

The signal also carried evidence of two structures along its route: a previously unknown galaxy cluster at redshift 0.3, about 3.5 billion light-years away, and the nearby Virgo Cluster, about 54 million light-years from Earth. These structures are not being photographed by the burst. Instead, their ionized gas leaves an imprint in the accumulated dispersion and related analysis, while imaging and redshift measurements identify the structures independently.
J. Xavier Prochaska of the University of California, Santa Cruz, described the principle this way: “A fast radio burst is almost like a cosmic flashlight. It lights up everything along the path. It carries an imprint of everything that it travels through, so you can use it to trace the ‘cosmic web’ – the otherwise invisible matter and structures that it encounters along the way.”
This example shows why a localized, high-redshift FRB is valuable. The host redshift establishes a long path; the foreground clusters provide identifiable checkpoints; and the pulse supplies an electron column that can be compared with the gas expected in those environments. The measurement still combines all material along the route, so it is evidence about the intervening structures rather than a standalone mass measurement of either cluster.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow FRBs address the missing-baryon problem
Cosmological observations account for the expected amount of ordinary matter, or baryons, but much of that matter is difficult to see because it is diffuse and too cool or thin to shine strongly. FRB dispersion is sensitive to ionized electrons even when the gas is nearly invisible in images. By combining DMs, host distances and foreground structure catalogs, researchers can estimate where baryons reside.

The 2025 Nature Astronomy result
The 2025 Nature Astronomy paper “A gas-rich cosmic web revealed by the partitioning of the missing baryons” reports an FRB-based late-universe baryon density of Ωb h70 = 0.051 ± 0.006. The quantity is dimensionless under the convention used in that paper. The study also partitions the inferred baryons among the intergalactic medium, clusters and galaxies.
That number is the result of the paper’s sample and modeling, not a universal value free of assumptions. The inferred partition depends on how Milky Way, host and intervening contributions are modeled, how sightlines are selected and how the observed bursts are combined with other data. It is best read as evidence that a substantial baryon reservoir is distributed through gas-rich intergalactic structures, alongside quantified uncertainty.
What the FLIMFLAM DR1 analysis adds
The FLIMFLAM DR1 report uses eight FRB sightlines to make initial constraints on the cosmic baryon distribution. Its abstract states that the uncertainty remains too broad to constrain most galaxy-feedback models. In practical terms, eight carefully studied routes can test methods and provide early limits, but they cannot yet determine how every form of feedback moves gas between galaxies, halos and the IGM.
Together, these studies illustrate the progression from individual sightlines to population inference: first measure reliable columns, then improve host and foreground accounting, and finally use a larger, better distributed sample to narrow the baryon budget.
Comparing the main kinds of FRB evidence
| Evidence type | What is measured | Strength | Main uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Localized FRB with a host redshift, such as FRB 20240304B | One electron column tied to a known source distance and identifiable foreground structures | Can connect DM features with specific galaxies, groups or clusters along one route | Host, Milky Way halo and intervening contributions remain partly degenerate |
| Population baryon analysis, such as the 2025 Nature Astronomy study | Statistical baryon density and partition among IGM, clusters and galaxies | Combines many sightlines to estimate cosmic averages | Results depend on sample selection and modeling assumptions; uncertainty is reported with the inferred value |
| FLIMFLAM DR1 | Initial constraints from eight FRB sightlines | Tests a framework for connecting FRBs with galaxy environments | Abstract-level results say uncertainty is still too broad to constrain most feedback models |
How astronomers turn an FRB into a cosmic-web measurement
- Detect and characterize the pulse. Radio instruments measure the burst across frequency channels and fit the dispersive delay to obtain DM.
- Pin down the position. High-resolution observations reduce the sky area enough for host and foreground-galaxy searches.
- Identify the host and measure redshift. The redshift provides distance context for the source and the length of the intervening path.
- Estimate the Milky Way foreground. Models account for electrons in the Galactic disk and an uncertain halo contribution.
- Assess the local and host environment. Imaging and spectroscopy can indicate whether the burst lies in a dense star-forming region or another gas-rich setting.
- Search the foreground. Galaxy catalogs, group and cluster observations, and other tracers reveal structures that the signal may have crossed.
- Infer the intergalactic contribution statistically. The residual DM is combined with simulations and many other sightlines to estimate diffuse gas and baryon partitioning.
The key limitations to keep in mind
- DM is cumulative: a large value does not identify one dominant cloud without independent evidence.
- Host environments vary: two bursts at similar redshift can have different local electron columns.
- The Galactic halo is uncertain: errors in the foreground model propagate into the inferred IGM term.
- Samples are still growing: sparse or uneven sightlines can miss regional structure and broaden uncertainties.
- Feedback physics is unresolved: gas expelled or heated by galaxies can shift between halos and intergalactic space in ways current small samples cannot fully constrain.
For these reasons, FRBs are best understood as calibrated cosmic backlights. They do not replace galaxy surveys, gravitational-lensing measurements or X-ray observations; they add a direct electron-column measurement that complements those methods, especially for gas too diffuse to see easily.
