A 2 kWh (about 2,000 Wh) portable power station can run anything from a Wi-Fi router for several days to a microwave for roughly an hour, but there is no single runtime. The practical estimate is available watt-hours ÷ the appliance’s average watts = runtime in hours. Conversion losses, inverter standby power, cycling loads, temperature, battery condition and reserve settings reduce the result.
The short answer: energy and power are different limits
A portable power station’s battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). A 2 kWh station nominally stores about 2,000 Wh of energy. That tells you how much work the battery can provide over time, not whether it can start every appliance.
Power delivery is measured in watts (W). The station must have enough continuous AC output for the appliance while also handling its startup or surge demand. A station can contain enough energy to run a device for hours yet still fail to start it if the device’s running or startup requirement exceeds the inverter’s limits.
For a first estimate, divide the station’s usable watt-hours by the appliance’s average watt draw:

Runtime (hours) = usable Wh ÷ average W
Using the nominal figure as a simple illustration, 2,000 Wh divided by a constant 100 W load equals 20 hours. That is arithmetic from the nameplate capacity, not a tested runtime. Actual AC runtime is shorter because the inverter consumes power, the battery-management system may reserve energy, and the appliance may not draw a perfectly constant load.
How to calculate a realistic runtime
1. Find the appliance’s average consumption
Use measured energy consumption over a representative period when possible. A refrigerator, freezer, furnace, pump or other compressor appliance cycles on and off, so its running wattage is not the same as its average draw over a day. A meter that records watt-hours gives a better input than a label showing only the motor’s running watts.
For a constant load, the calculation is straightforward. A 500 W appliance connected to 2,000 Wh would have a nominal estimate of four hours before losses. For a 60 W router, the same arithmetic gives about 33.3 hours. Those figures are planning estimates; they should not be presented as guaranteed runtimes.
2. Replace nominal capacity with usable energy
The advertised 2 kWh is a battery rating under the manufacturer’s specified conditions. Usable energy at an AC outlet is lower than the nominal figure because of battery-management reserves, inverter conversion and the station’s own electronics. If a manufacturer supplies a tested runtime table, use that table for the exact model and load rather than assuming the full 2,000 Wh reaches the appliance.

For your own estimate, treat the result of the formula as an upper bound and allow additional margin for overhead. The more important the load, the more useful it is to test the actual appliance before an outage or trip.
3. Account for changing loads
Heating elements, motors and compressors can draw much more at startup or while actively heating than they do on average. A coffee maker may use close to its rated power while heating, then stop. A refrigerator may draw several hundred watts briefly and almost nothing while the compressor is off. Runtime depends on the average over the entire period, while the inverter check depends on the highest instantaneous demand.
What a 2 kWh station can run: a manufacturer example
EcoFlow lists its DELTA 2 Max as a 2048 Wh portable station with 2400 W of AC output. Its US product page gives the following single-appliance examples. These are EcoFlow’s estimates for that product and its example appliances, not universal guarantees for every 2 kWh station or every appliance with the same label.

|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 14 hours | A cycling load; the figure reflects an assumed duty cycle rather than constant nameplate watts. |
| Wi-Fi router | 97 hours | A relatively low, steady load; actual networking equipment and power supplies vary. |
| Television | 15 hours | Screen size, brightness, sound level and standby behavior affect consumption. |
| Microwave | 1.3 hours | A high-power heating load; this is cumulative operating time, not necessarily 1.3 hours of continuous cooking. |
| Blender | 3.3 hours | Blender motors are usually used intermittently, so the figure represents total motor-on time. |
| Washing machine | 3.3 hours | Cycles include pauses and changing motor loads; the exact program matters. |
| Portable refrigerator | 29 hours | Insulation, ambient temperature and compressor cycling can change this substantially. |
| Coffee maker | 1.6 hours | Heating power dominates while brewing; the practical number of cups depends on brew duration. |
| Projector | 25 hours | Lamp or LED power mode, speakers and connected equipment influence the draw. |
The table shows why “how many watts does it use?” is only part of the answer. A router may run continuously for days because its average draw is small. A microwave or coffee maker may consume a large amount of energy in a short session, even though the total time the appliance is actually switched on can add up to more than an hour.

Why refrigerators and other cycling appliances are harder to predict
For a refrigerator, use average energy consumption over a full day when available. The compressor starts, runs for a while, stops, and then repeats. Ambient temperature, how often the door opens, food load, thermostat setting and the condition of the compressor all change the duty cycle.
A refrigerator’s startup surge also matters. Check both the station’s continuous AC rating and its surge specification. If the station shuts down when the compressor starts, the problem is output capability or startup behavior, not necessarily insufficient battery capacity.
For a critical refrigerator, disable an automatic AC shutdown that would interrupt power while the compressor is temporarily off. The DELTA 2 Max manual instructs users to set AC timeout to never
for continuous critical loads such as a refrigerator. Apply that instruction only to the exact model and interface described in the relevant manual; other stations may use different labels or timeout behavior.

- Continuous AC output in watts.
- Short-term surge or startup capability.
- The appliance’s running wattage and any specified starting wattage.
- Whether the station’s high-wattage mode changes voltage, efficiency or other operating limits.
- The outlet, plug, voltage and frequency requirements for your region.
EcoFlow advertises an X-Boost mode for some higher-wattage loads on the DELTA 2 Max. Treat that as a model-specific operating feature, not proof that every appliance above the normal rating will work. Consult the exact manual and the appliance manufacturer before relying on such a mode, especially with motors, heating equipment or sensitive electronics.
A smaller-capacity comparison shows why scaling can mislead
EcoFlow’s DELTA 2 page describes a 1024 Wh model and gives a refrigerator example of 7–14 hours for a refrigerator identified as 120 W, plus 0.8 hours for a 1000 W coffee maker. Those figures illustrate duty cycle and load type, but they should not be scaled mechanically to predict a different model.
Battery capacity is only one variable. Inverter efficiency, standby consumption, output limits, battery reserve settings and the manufacturer’s test assumptions can differ between products. A nominally twice-as-large battery will not necessarily provide exactly twice the runtime for every appliance.

Step-by-step method for planning your own loads
- List the appliances. Record each device’s voltage, running watts and any startup or surge requirement. Include chargers, power strips and accessories that will remain connected.
- Measure or estimate average watts. For steady electronics, a watt meter reading is useful. For cycling equipment, record watt-hours over several hours or a full day.
- Calculate a conservative runtime. Divide the station’s usable Wh, or a manufacturer-tested usable figure, by the measured average watts. If only nominal capacity is available, label the result as an upper-bound estimate.
- Check inverter compatibility. Compare every device’s continuous and startup demand with the station’s continuous and surge ratings. Do this before considering runtime.
- Plan simultaneous use. Add the wattage of loads that will run at the same time. A station may run a refrigerator and router together but trip when a microwave starts on the same outlet.
- Include operating settings. Check AC timeout, eco mode, low-battery reserve, display settings and any automatic shutdown. Disable a timeout only when the manual permits it and the load requires uninterrupted power.
- Test the complete setup. Use the intended cables, adapters and extension leads. Observe startup, measured watts, battery percentage and whether the station enters an error state.
Medical devices and other critical loads
A generic runtime calculation is not a medical assurance. The DELTA 2 Max manual says the product can power a home ventilator, or home CPAP, that does not have to be continuously monitored by professionals. It also tells users to follow their doctor’s instructions and consult the equipment manufacturer about restrictions.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For a CPAP, ventilator, oxygen equipment, medicine refrigerator or other critical load, confirm the exact device’s input requirements, permitted power source, battery-backup procedure and alarm behavior. Ask the equipment manufacturer or clinician whether humidification, heated tubing or other accessories must be disabled during backup operation. Keep an alternative backup plan; a portable station should not be the only safeguard for a life-supporting device.
For refrigerated medicines or perishables, establish the required temperature range and the maximum acceptable interruption. Verify the refrigerator’s average consumption and the station’s timeout settings, then test the combination under realistic conditions.
Factors that shorten real-world runtime
- AC conversion: The inverter cannot deliver every stored watt-hour to the outlet.
- Station overhead: Displays, battery-management electronics, fans and standby circuits consume energy even when the connected device is light.
- Temperature: Very hot or cold conditions can change battery performance and appliance duty cycles.
- Battery age: Available capacity generally changes as the battery accumulates cycles and spends time at temperature extremes.
- Reserve settings: The station may stop output before the battery is chemically empty to protect the cells.
- Changing appliance behavior: Compressors, pumps, motors and thermostats do not draw a fixed wattage.
- Cable and adapter losses: Poorly matched or inefficient accessories can add consumption and may create voltage-drop problems.
For planning, use a measured result from the same station and appliance whenever the load is important. Otherwise, treat the formula as an estimate and keep a margin rather than scheduling the load to end exactly when the displayed battery percentage reaches zero.

Capacity alone is not enough. Compare the following specifications for the exact model and regional version:
| Specification | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Nominal and usable energy | Nominal Wh is the battery rating; usable Wh better predicts outlet runtime. |
| Continuous AC output | Determines which loads can run normally. |
| Surge rating and duration | Determines whether compressors and motors can start. |
| AC and DC port types | Direct DC operation can avoid an AC conversion step for compatible devices. |
| Standby and timeout behavior | Important for refrigerators, routers and other loads that cycle or draw little power. |
| Expansion-battery support | Provides more stored energy when the base capacity is insufficient, subject to the manufacturer’s limits. |
| Charging inputs and times | Affects how quickly the station can be restored from wall, vehicle or solar power. |
| Runtime-test assumptions | Explains whether published hours reflect a particular appliance, temperature, load or operating mode. |
Use published runtime tables as model-specific examples. They are useful for scale, but they are not independent laboratory guarantees for every household appliance.
Bottom line for outage and travel planning
A 2 kWh portable power station is best understood as roughly 2,000 Wh of nominal stored energy paired with a separate inverter-power limit. Low-power electronics can run for many hours or days; heating appliances and microwaves consume the battery quickly; refrigerators depend on cycling and startup behavior. Start with usable Wh divided by average W, verify continuous and surge output, then test the exact appliance combination. For medical equipment or any load whose failure creates a safety risk, follow the device manufacturer’s instructions and maintain a separate backup plan.
