C programming is used for software that benefits from close control of memory and system resources, portability across platforms, or a compact runtime footprint. Its clearest documented roles include operating systems and database software; it can also be used for embedded systems, compilers, networking tools, drivers, and game or graphics components. These are application areas, not a claim that every product in them is written in C.
What is C programming used for?
C is a general-purpose programming language often chosen for system-facing software: programs that interact closely with an operating system, hardware, memory, or other low-level interfaces. It is also used to build portable libraries and components that need to run in varied environments. The seven applications below range from clearly documented projects to broader categories where C is one possible implementation choice.
1. Operating systems and system software
The Linux kernel is a direct, well-documented example. Linux kernel documentation says, “The kernel is written in the C programming language.” In practice, Linux uses GNU C: the v6.9 documentation describes a typical build with GCC under -std=gnu11, the GNU dialect of ISO C11, and notes support for Clang as well. That means it would be inaccurate to describe the kernel as using only strictly standard C. Linux kernel programming-language documentation (v6.9)
C is suited to this kind of software because it allows direct interaction with system interfaces and careful control over memory and resources. The exact language and tools used vary across operating-system projects; Linux is a concrete example, not proof that every operating system is written in C.

2. Embedded and resource-constrained systems
Embedded software runs in devices or tightly constrained environments, where a small runtime and portability can matter. SQLite provides a concrete example of software designed to work in such conditions: its documentation says it runs on any operating system, including stripped-down, bare-bones embedded operating systems. Its minimal build can use a small set of standard C library routines, and some builds can make allocation routines optional. SQLite: Self-Contained
This shows how C can support portable software in constrained environments; it does not establish that all embedded firmware is written in C. A project’s hardware, operating environment, available libraries, and team expertise still determine whether C is a suitable fit.
3. Database engines and libraries
C is used to implement database software, including both embeddable libraries and larger database platforms. SQLite describes itself as a self-contained, serverless, zero-configuration transactional SQL database engine. Its rationale page says, “C was and continues to be the best language for implementing a software library like SQLite.” That is the SQLite project’s explanation for its own design choice, not a universal ranking of languages. 4. Compilers, interpreters, and language runtimes
Compilers translate source code into another form, interpreters execute programs, and runtimes provide services that programs need while running. These are among the lower-level software categories associated with C in educational overviews, which also include assemblers and language implementations. OpenStax: What Is a Computer Program?
C can be used when an implementation needs access to system interfaces or control over resources, but these examples should not be read as evidence that all current compilers or language runtimes are written in C. A tool’s language is a project-specific choice.
5. Networking software, drivers, and command-line utilities
Network drivers, other device drivers, and command-line utilities are examples of system-facing software that educational sources associate with C. OpenStax: What Is a Computer Program? C can be used for these jobs when the software needs to interface with an operating system or device, but the category alone does not establish how common C is in current products or what language any particular tool uses.

C can be used in low-level game or graphics components. OpenStax discusses game-related APIs for drawing graphics, playing sounds, and reading user input—tasks that illustrate how programs connect to input and output facilities. OpenStax: What Is a Computer Program?
This is a narrower claim than saying C is the default for modern game development. The evidence supports C as an option for components that need close control or system access, not a claim about the language used by all games or game studios.
7. Other compact or performance-sensitive components
C may be a practical choice for other components when a project needs explicit control over memory and system interfaces, broad compiler support, or a compact set of dependencies. Those needs can arise in many kinds of software, so the language is best selected for the particular component rather than by category label alone. No universal performance advantage over other languages follows from these examples.
The main trade-off is that low-level control makes the programmer responsible for more details. The GNU C Manual warns that explicit pointers can lead to memory-use errors. It even recommends that beginners first learn a language with automatic garbage collection and no explicit pointers rather than starting with C. GNU C Manual

Why is C used for operating systems and other system software?
C offers direct control over memory and access to system interfaces while remaining supported by compilers on a range of platforms. Those properties can help software work close to an operating system or hardware without requiring a large runtime. They also bring more responsibility for handling memory safely. C is a fit when the project benefits from that control and the people building it can manage the associated risks.

Is C still used today?
Yes. The Linux kernel’s v6.9 documentation explicitly identifies C as its programming language, and SQLite and PostgreSQL provide current official examples of database software with C implementations. PostgreSQL’s displayed line count is undated, so it should not be treated as a measurement for a specific year. Together, these examples show continued use in substantial projects without establishing how prevalent C is across every software category.
How to decide whether C fits a project
Compare the actual requirements rather than assuming one language is best for every application. Consider:
- Control: Does the software need direct access to memory, hardware, or operating-system interfaces?
- Targets: Which processors, operating systems, and compiler toolchains must the project support?
- Footprint: Are runtime size, dependencies, or limited system facilities important constraints?
- Performance: What performance requirements have been measured for this project? No cross-language benchmark or universal winner is established by the examples here.
- Project ecosystem: Do the required libraries, tools, and interfaces work well with C?
- Memory safety: Can the team reliably manage memory and avoid pointer-related errors, or would a language that automates more of that work reduce risk?
C is a strong candidate when its control and portability matter more than the extra care required for memory management. If the software does not need those properties, the team’s tools, ecosystem, and safety requirements may point to another language.
