Buying a PC monitor means choosing a display that suits your main tasks, works with your computer, fits your workspace, and stays within budget. The right choice depends on more than screen size: compare resolution, panel characteristics, motion performance, connections, stand adjustment, and mounting compatibility.
Start with what you will use the monitor for
Set your main use before comparing specifications. Gaming, office work, creative work, and general-purpose use place different demands on a display. HP’s monitor guide contrasts gaming priorities with office clarity and ergonomics; LG’s UK monitor buying guide recommends choosing size and resolution around usage, desk space, and hardware.
- Office and general use: Give attention to clear text, comfortable viewing, and an adjustable setup.
- Gaming: Consider refresh rate, response behavior, and adaptive-sync support alongside the computer’s graphics capability.
- Creative work: Prioritize the color and viewing characteristics appropriate to your work, and assess the specific monitor rather than relying on panel labels alone.
How do size and resolution work together?
Screen size describes the physical display; resolution describes the number of pixels used to form its image. A higher resolution can provide more detail and workspace, but it also asks more of the computer’s graphics hardware. Consider the two together with your desk dimensions and usual viewing position.

These are examples from a manufacturer guide, not market-wide statistics or a recommendation that one resolution suits every screen size and task.

What do panel types tell you?
Panel technology involves trade-offs in color, viewing angles, contrast, and response characteristics. HP describes IPS as emphasizing color accuracy and viewing angles, VA as emphasizing contrast and deep blacks, and TN as prioritizing speed and refresh rates while typically offering weaker viewing angles and color accuracy. LG also discusses OLED and Mini LED; its descriptions of OLED’s strong blacks and fast response describe technology-level characteristics, not guaranteed performance for every monitor.
Use panel type as a way to narrow options, not as a substitute for checking the individual model’s specifications and suitability for your work.

How should you compare refresh rate and response time?
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often a display updates its image. A higher refresh rate can make motion look smoother, particularly in games, but the computer must be able to drive the monitor at the intended resolution and rate. HP uses 60 Hz, 144 Hz, and 240 Hz or above as example refresh-rate classes; these are guide examples rather than independent measurements of what buyers need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteResponse time describes how quickly a pixel changes state. Treat a quoted response-time figure as one specification, not a standalone guarantee of motion clarity. Compare it in the context of the particular display and your intended use.

- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Which ports and setup details should you check?
Confirm that the monitor and computer can connect and deliver the display mode you want. HP lists HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C as common connection types. The presence of a port alone does not establish that a particular resolution and refresh rate will work; check the capabilities of both devices. Intel’s gaming monitor guide explains display connections and VESA mounting considerations.
- Stand adjustment: Check whether the monitor provides the height, tilt, or swivel adjustment your workspace needs.
- VESA mounting: If you plan to use an arm or wall mount, confirm that the monitor has compatible VESA mounting holes and that the mount’s pattern and screws fit.
- Adaptive sync: HP identifies NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync as technologies intended to provide smoother gaming. Verify support on both the monitor and computer before relying on a particular feature.
A practical way to compare monitor options
When you have specific models in view, compare them against the same needs rather than choosing by one headline specification.
