ButterShare is presented as a free, browser-based way to send files directly to another person without signing up or installing an app. Its maker says the file payload normally travels between the two devices rather than being uploaded to cloud storage. However, ButterShare still uses servers to help connect browsers, and a relay may carry encrypted traffic when a direct connection cannot be made.
What is ButterShare?
ButterShare is a peer-to-peer file-transfer tool that runs in a web browser. The sender selects files or folders, then shares a room link, QR code, or code with the recipient. The product describes this as a way to transfer files without an account or application installation. These are the maker’s product claims, not results from an independent hands-on evaluation. The “I built” framing comes from the maker’s account of the project. The available article description identifies its purpose, but does not establish details of the development process or provide independently verified performance results.

According to ButterShare’s technical documentation, the browsers use WebRTC to establish a connection and stream data between devices. Signaling servers help the browsers negotiate that connection; they are part of the process even when the file data travels directly between the endpoints. Once received, data is written locally using browser storage mechanisms. ButterShare technical documentation

If network restrictions prevent a direct connection, ButterShare says it can use a TURN relay. In that case, encrypted traffic passes through relay infrastructure, so the transfer is not a direct network path. A relay is different from cloud storage: the product describes it as carrying traffic rather than storing the file payload as a hosted download.
Does ButterShare upload files to a server?
ButterShare’s security documentation says signaling servers handle connection metadata and do not store or inspect file payloads. It says WebRTC DataChannels use DTLS encryption. Taken together, the product’s description is that files normally move between the sender and recipient, while signaling infrastructure—and, in some network conditions, a TURN relay—may still be involved. Those statements come from ButterShare itself. The available material does not establish an independent security audit, penetration test, or verification of the service’s server practices. Avoid treating the product’s description as an independently confirmed security assessment.

Is there really no file size limit?
ButterShare markets the service as having no application-level file-size cap. That does not mean every file will transfer successfully. Practical limits depend on available storage, browser capabilities, and network conditions. The product distinguishes browsers that support streaming through OPFS from Safari, where it notes memory constraints. ButterShare product information ButterShare technical documentation

- Storage: The receiving device needs enough usable space for the incoming files.
- Browser: Browser support and storage behavior affect how large transfers are handled.
- Network: Connectivity can determine whether a direct connection succeeds or relay infrastructure is needed.
No independently measured maximum file size or transfer speed is established by the available sources. Treat “no file-size limit” as the maker’s statement that it does not impose a fixed product cap, not as a guarantee for a particular device or transfer.
What happens if a transfer is interrupted?
ButterShare’s FAQ includes a question about accidentally closing a tab during a transfer, but the available source material does not establish a recovery or resume guarantee. Do not assume an interrupted transfer will pick up where it stopped. For an important or large transfer, keep the sender and recipient’s browser tabs open until completion is confirmed, and check that the received files are present before closing the session. When does ButterShare make sense?
ButterShare may suit a one-off transfer when both people can keep a browser session open and the receiving device has adequate storage. It is presented as a browser-based alternative to uploading a file to a cloud-transfer service, but its direct-transfer model does not remove all infrastructure or device requirements.

ButterShare’s stated motivation is to avoid the friction of cloud upload and storage; that framing is the maker’s, rather than an independently verified comparison of services. ButterShare about page
