The hardy crop in this story is millet—specifically broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) in the Central Eurasian archaeological evidence. Finds from Bronze Age campsites show that mobile pastoralists used domesticated crops, complicating the idea that farming belonged only to settled communities. Today, millet’s ability to grow with limited water is renewing interest in the crop group, though it is no universal fix for difficult growing conditions.

Which crop did Bronze Age communities grow?

Millet is a group of cereal crops, not a single species. The Central Eurasian evidence discussed here identifies broomcorn millet. It should not be confused with a claim that every ancient millet find represents the same species, farming practice, or use.

A 2014 study of Bronze Age mobile pastoralists reports domesticated grains at seasonal campsites in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Its findings show that mobile communities participated in crop use and transmission alongside pastoralism; they do not fit a simple division between nomadic herders and settled farmers. The authors discuss the spread of crop repertoires across Central Eurasia. Read the study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

What do the sites tell us about millet farming?

Begash: millet and wheat by the third millennium BC

At Begash in Kazakhstan, Phase 1a is dated to approximately 2450–2100 cal BC. The study reports carbonized broomcorn millet and wheat in this early evidence. The calibrated range is the study’s dating for the phase; it is not a date for the origin of millet domestication.

Tasbas: a mixed crop repertoire in the second millennium BC

At the highland site of Tasbas, Phase 2a, approximately 1500–1200 BC, is associated with naked barley, wheat, broomcorn millet, and green peas. The authors interpret the evidence for local cultivation in light of seed abundance and ubiquity, threshing remains, and impressions in mud-brick. It describes a mixed crop assemblage, not a millet-specific seed count.

A crop find is not automatic proof of a local field

Seeds found at a campsite establish that crops were present there, but not necessarily that each crop was grown at that exact location. The study considers local cultivation of wheat and barley less likely at some desert sites near specialized farming villages, while discussing different possibilities for millet. Crop movement, exchange, and local cultivation must be distinguished when interpreting a site.

Why is millet relevant to modern farming?

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) describes millet as drought resistant and notes its potential contribution to agrifood systems facing climate pressures. FAO says: “Millets can be grown in high temperatures and with little water in poor soils and resist crop diseases and pests.” See FAO’s 2023 climate-resilience resource.

This is a broad description of millets as a crop group, not a guarantee that every species or variety will thrive in every dry or hot region. Local conditions, growing season, soil, intended use, and seed availability affect whether a particular millet is a practical choice. The ancient Central Asian record also cannot establish why Bronze Age farmers selected millet; modern climate arguments should not be projected onto their decisions.

What makes millet production difficult to scale?

Crop traits alone do not ensure reliable harvests or farmer adoption. In its 2024 account, FAO points to crop improvement and the importance of breeding, value-chain development, investment, policy, and farmers’ access to seed for raising production potential under adverse conditions. Read FAO’s 2024 account of millet crop improvement.

For a modern planting decision, compare the specific species and variety against local heat and water conditions, soil, season length, and the intended purpose—grain, fodder, or food processing. A variety suited to one region or use may not suit another, and the evidence cited here does not support a universal recommendation or a direct yield comparison with maize, wheat, or barley.

How does the Central Eurasian evidence fit the longer history?

Separate evidence from East Asia addresses the early domestication of common millet. A 2009 PNAS paper’s title states that evidence for domestication of Panicum miliaceum extends to 10,000 years ago; its abstract associates early use in semiarid China with drought resistance. That is a different region and question from the Bronze Age Central Eurasian campsite evidence, and it should not be treated as the date when millet first arrived at Begash or Tasbas. Read the PNAS study on early common millet domestication.
