Boston Dynamics is a robotics company founded in 1992 by Marc Raibert as a spin-off from MIT’s Leg Lab. It develops robots for commercial and industrial work: Spot collects inspection data, Stretch handles warehouse cases, and Atlas is an emerging humanoid platform for industrial applications. Orbit is software for managing robot fleets, not a robot. Hyundai Motor Group owns 80% of the company and a SoftBank affiliate owns 20%. Boston Dynamics’ company history and FAQ provide the company’s account of its origins and ownership.
What is Boston Dynamics?
Boston Dynamics develops mobile robots intended to work in environments designed for people, including industrial plants, construction sites, distribution centers, and warehouses. The company emphasizes mobility, dexterity, and perception—capabilities that can help robots navigate places that are difficult or repetitive for people to work in. This is the company’s description of its focus, not an independent ranking of its performance against other robotics makers. Boston Dynamics’ About Us page describes its mission and areas of work.
The company’s products address distinct jobs rather than offering interchangeable general-purpose machines. Spot is focused on inspection and data collection; Stretch is built for warehouse case handling; Atlas is the newer industrial humanoid platform. Orbit supports fleet management and facility data.
How Boston Dynamics developed from research into commercial robotics
Marc Raibert founded Boston Dynamics in 1992 as a spin-off from MIT’s Leg Lab. The company’s milestones trace a progression from research in legged robots toward products intended for commercial environments. Its history identifies BigDog’s move into real terrain in 2004 and the first Atlas debut in 2013. Spot became commercially available in 2020, and the company introduced Stretch in 2021 for warehouse work. An all-electric Atlas was unveiled in 2024, followed by announcement of a product version in January 2026. The company’s history page lays out those milestones.

Boston Dynamics says its broader aim is to apply robots to work that is dull, dirty, or dangerous. That framing explains the environments and tasks it targets; it should not be mistaken for evidence that every robot is suitable for every site or task.
Who owns Boston Dynamics?
According to Boston Dynamics’ FAQ, Hyundai Motor Group holds an 80% stake, while SoftBank, through an affiliate, holds the remaining 20%. The company says it operates as an independent business within Hyundai’s portfolio. These are the ownership figures reported by Boston Dynamics, accessed October 7, 2026. Boston Dynamics FAQ

What do Spot, Stretch, Atlas, and Orbit do?
| Product | What it is for | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | A quadruped robot for inspections, facility-performance data, and safety-related applications. Its ecosystem includes payloads, an arm, Orbit, and partner solutions. | Mobile inspection and data capture in places where wheeled equipment or people may have difficulty operating. |
| Stretch | A mobile warehouse robot with an arm and gripper designed to move cases, including unloading trailers. | A purpose-built case-handling system, not a general-purpose humanoid. |
| Atlas | An electric humanoid platform aimed at industrial work and material handling. | A developing commercial offering; task scope and deployments are still taking shape. |
| Orbit | Fleet-management software for remote operation, autonomous tasks, and facility-context data. | Software for overseeing robots and their work, not a physical robot. |
These roles and product descriptions come from Boston Dynamics’ product information.
Spot: inspection and data collection
Spot’s quadruped design is intended to move through facilities and gather data. Teams may configure it with payloads or an arm for their specific use, while Orbit can help coordinate tasks and organize facility information. Its purpose is inspection and mobile data collection, rather than warehouse case movement.

Atlas: industrial humanoid applications
Boston Dynamics announced the product version of electric Atlas in January 2026. The company describes it as an enterprise humanoid for industrial work and lists task learning, operation with minimal supervision, autonomous navigation, and battery swapping among its capabilities. Those are vendor descriptions, not independently verified performance results. The product page lists a height of 1.9 m, weight of 90 kg, 56 degrees of freedom, an IP67 rating, and four hours of battery life; these are company-published specifications, not comparative test results. Boston Dynamics scheduled 2026 Atlas deployments at Hyundai’s Robotics Metaplant Application Center and Google DeepMind. That announcement establishes a planned deployment schedule; it does not by itself confirm that those deployments have been completed. The company characterizes Atlas as being in an early commercial journey and provides an early-adopter path, rather than presenting it as broadly available retail equipment. Boston Dynamics FAQ

Can an individual buy a Boston Dynamics robot?
Boston Dynamics says its robots are intended for commercial, industrial, enterprise, and university research use—not individual non-commercial purchase. The company says Spot and Stretch are commercially available, while Atlas remains in an early commercial phase. Sales are handled through product-specific commercial discussions, so availability is not the same as a consumer checkout option. Boston Dynamics FAQ
How to think about the product differences
The practical distinction is the job the robot is meant to perform: Spot is centered on inspection, Stretch on warehouse case movement, and Atlas on emerging industrial humanoid work. A deployment decision also depends on the environment, the maturity of the specific offering, and the integration required at the site. Boston Dynamics’ public materials do not establish comparable prices or a neutral head-to-head return-on-investment study, so they do not support a cost ranking among these products.
