IP ratings tell you how an enclosure performed in standardized dust and water-ingress tests—not whether a Bluetooth speaker is universally “waterproof.” In a code such as IP67, the first digit (6) describes protection from solid particles and dust, while the second digit (7) describes temporary immersion. An X means that position is not specified, not that the product failed.

For practical buying and use, identify the exposure you expect—splashes, rain, a water jet, dust or immersion—then compare the speaker’s exact code with the manufacturer’s limits for depth, duration, liquid type, covers, drying and charging. Those conditions matter as much as the two digits.

How to read an IP code

IP stands for Ingress Protection. The code is defined for the protection an enclosure provides against ingress. The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s IEC 60529 discussion describes an IP rating as a grade of enclosure resistance to dust or liquids; it is not a complete specification for every aspect of ruggedness or reliability.

An IP code has two positions after the letters:

  • First numeral: protection against solid foreign objects, including dust.
  • Second numeral: protection against water exposure.
  • X: that category is unspecified in the published code.

Thus, IPX7 states a water rating but makes no stated claim about solids. IP6X states a solids rating but no stated claim about water. The Samsung IP-ratings guide also emphasizes that an X is an unspecified category, not a failed test.

Relevant solids ratings

First digit Meaning for a speaker What it does not establish
5 Dust-protected (IP5X). It is not the same claim as dust-tight protection.
6 Dust-tight (IP6X). It does not supply any water rating unless a second digit is present.
X No solids-protection category is specified. It does not prove that solids can enter or that the speaker failed.

“Dust-protected” and “dust-tight” are therefore different statements. If fine dust is a major concern, look for a 6 in the first position rather than assuming that every IP-marked product has the same dust resistance.

Relevant water ratings

Second digit Exposure tested How to interpret it for a portable speaker
4 Splashes of water. Suitable only for the splash category tested; it is not an immersion rating.
5 Water jets. Addresses jets, not temporary immersion.
6 Powerful water jets. A stronger jet category, still a different test from immersion.
7 Temporary immersion under standardized pressure and time. It does not automatically prove resistance to jets.
8 Continuous immersion under manufacturer/user-agreed conditions more severe than class 7. The maker must state the agreed conditions; “8” alone does not tell you the depth or duration.
9 High-pressure, high-temperature jets. This is a specialized jet test, not a general permission to use a speaker in every wet environment.

The JRC table distinguishes the form of exposure rather than treating the second digit as a simple ladder in which every higher number includes every lower test. A speaker rated for immersion is not automatically rated for powerful jets, and a jet-rated speaker is not automatically rated for immersion.

What common Bluetooth-speaker codes mean

IPX4: splash resistance

IPX4 gives a water-splash result while leaving the solids category unspecified. It can be relevant to light rain or incidental splashes when the maker permits those conditions, but it is not evidence that the speaker can be dunked, hosed down or exposed to a pool.

IPX5 and IPX6: jet resistance

IPX5 covers the water-jet class and IPX6 covers the more powerful-jet class. These codes answer a different question from IPX7 immersion. Do not infer that an IPX7 speaker has passed IPX5 or IPX6 unless the manufacturer publishes those additional ratings.

IPX7: temporary immersion

IPX7 concerns temporary immersion in the standardized test. Product instructions still control the practical limit: they may specify a depth, a time, a cap position and acceptable liquids. “IPX7” is therefore not a blanket guarantee for swimming, deliberate underwater playback or every kind of water.

IP67: dust-tight plus temporary immersion

IP67 combines a first digit of 6 (dust-tight) with a second digit of 7 (temporary immersion). It does not mean “all-purpose waterproof,” and it does not show that the speaker passed the water-jet categories. If you expect spray from a hose, check whether the maker separately lists IPX5 or IPX6.

IP68: a condition-dependent immersion claim

IP68 indicates continuous immersion under conditions agreed by the manufacturer and user that are more severe than the IPX7 test. Because the code does not itself state the depth and duration, read the model’s specification before relying on it.

Why an IP rating is not an all-conditions waterproof promise

Ingress testing evaluates an enclosure under defined conditions. It does not establish every other performance criterion, and it cannot account for every real-world liquid, impact or aging scenario. A product may carry a valid rating while its manual imposes narrower rules for liquid type, handling or charging.

Ports and removable covers are particularly important. If a model requires a cap to be fastened, an open or partially seated cap changes the protection the test represents. Damage from drops, cracked seals, repairs or accumulated wear can also change the enclosure from the tested condition.

Liquid chemistry matters. Fresh water, pool water, salt water, soapy water, detergent, shampoo and hot-spring water are not interchangeable exposures. Chlorine, salt and cleaning agents can leave residues or attack materials even when a product has an immersion rating.

Apple’s Beats Pill guidance states that “Water resistance and dust resistance are not permanent conditions,” and warns that resistance can decrease through normal wear. The same guidance says not to intentionally submerge the speaker, avoid pressurized or high-velocity water, and wait until it is completely dry before charging.

What manufacturers’ instructions add to the code

Example Published rating or test detail Conditions and cautions
LG xboom Bounce IP67 testing under IEC 60529; dust-tight and water resistance up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. LG’s product page specifies fresh water, says to dry the speaker before use and says, “Do not charge while wet.” These are model instructions, not a universal rule for every IP67 speaker.
Sony SRS-XB12 The Sony help guide describes gentle submersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes; its dust test used particles up to 75 μm for eight hours. The cap must be fastened securely. Sony lists fresh, tap and pool water for this model and excludes soapy water, detergent, shampoo, hot-spring water and salt water. This older model guide should not be generalized to newer speakers.
Beats Pill IP67. Apple describes the resistance as non-permanent, advises against intentional submersion and pressurized water, and says not to charge until completely dry.
Compatible IP67 SoundLink models Dust protection and temporary-immersion protection under specified conditions. Bose’s guidance cautions: “Waterproof protection does not mean a speaker should be intentionally operated underwater.” It also directs owners to care instructions after saltwater, chlorine, mud or sand exposure.

The LG and Sony measurements—1 metre for 30 minutes—belong to those manufacturers’ stated tests for those specific models. They should not be copied to another speaker merely because its code looks similar.

Choose a rating for the exposure you actually expect

Rain, spills and light splashes

Start by checking whether the maker permits rain or splashes and whether the speaker is rated at least for the relevant splash class. IPX4 addresses splashes, but the product’s care instructions still govern placement, port covers and drying.

Hose spray or strong jets

Look for a published jet rating, such as IPX5 or IPX6, when jets are part of the use case. Do not substitute IPX7 immersion for a jet rating; they are separate test categories.

Poolside use and accidental drops

An IPX7 or IP67 code may address temporary immersion, but pool chemicals and deliberate underwater use require model-specific permission. Check whether the manufacturer names pool water, gives a depth and duration, and requires a cap to be closed. Even when a drop is within the stated test conditions, dry the speaker before operating or charging it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Beach, dust and salt water

For sand and dust, the first digit matters: IP6X means dust-tight, while IP5X means dust-protected. Salt water remains a separate concern; an IP code alone does not establish saltwater suitability. Follow the maker’s cleaning and rinsing instructions instead of assuming that a dust-tight, immersion-rated enclosure can be used in the sea.

Safe handling before, during and after water exposure

  1. Identify the exact model and code. Read the product page or manual, not just a retailer headline. Confirm both digits and any separate jet or immersion ratings.
  2. Read the conditions attached to the rating. Record the stated depth, duration, liquid types, temperature limits, cap or cover requirements and any exclusions.
  3. Close every rated cover. Inspect the port flap or cap for grit, deformation and a complete seal before exposure. A rating that requires a secured cap does not apply with the cap open.
  4. Keep exposure within the published use. Do not intentionally operate underwater, exceed the stated depth or duration, or introduce a jet when only immersion protection is documented.
  5. Remove the speaker and let it dry. Wipe away water and follow the model’s drying procedure. Do not connect a charger while moisture may remain in a port.
  6. Account for non-fresh liquids. If the speaker contacts salt, chlorine, soap, mud or another excluded liquid, use only the cleaning or rinsing method the manufacturer recommends. Avoid improvising with detergents.
  7. Recheck after wear or impact. A fall, cracked housing, loose cap or aging seal can make the original test result irrelevant. Contact the manufacturer if the enclosure is damaged.

A buyer’s checklist for comparing Bluetooth speakers

Question Why it matters
What is the complete IP code? Both digits identify solids and water claims; an X leaves one category unspecified.
What exposure will occur? Splashes, jets, dust and immersion are different tests.
Are depth and duration stated? A model-specific limit is more useful than the code alone.
Which liquids are included or excluded? Fresh, tap, pool, salt, soapy and hot-spring water may be treated differently.
Must a cap or port cover be closed? The rating may depend on that seal being secure.
What are the drying and charging instructions? Charging a wet speaker can cause damage; some makers explicitly prohibit it.
Does the maker discuss wear, impact or damage? Ingress resistance can decline as seals and enclosures age.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reading IP67 as “waterproof everywhere.” It combines dust-tight protection with the temporary-immersion category, not every water test.
  • Assuming IPX7 includes jets. Immersion and jet classes measure different exposures.
  • Applying one model’s test limits to another. The 1-metre, 30-minute figures cited by LG and Sony are model-specific.
  • Ignoring the liquid. Salt, chlorine, soap and hot-spring water may be excluded even when fresh water is allowed.
  • Charging immediately after use. Follow the maker’s drying instruction; LG and Apple explicitly warn against charging while wet.
  • Trusting a damaged enclosure. A rating describes the tested enclosure, not a speaker with a cracked housing, loose cover or worn seal.

When a product page uses “waterproof,” treat that word as shorthand for the tested IP condition and the maker’s stated limits. The exact code, model manual and care instructions are the evidence you need for a purchase or a particular outing.
