Bluetooth LE Audio adds five capabilities that the familiar Classic Audio system does not provide in the same way: LC3 codec options, synchronized multi-stream playback, broadcast listening through Auracast, a standards-based path for hearing aids, and broadcasts that can carry separate language or accessibility streams. These are capabilities, not automatic upgrades: each feature depends on compatible hardware, software, and implementation at both ends.
What is Bluetooth LE Audio?
LE Audio is Bluetooth’s audio architecture for the Bluetooth Low Energy radio. Classic Audio uses Bluetooth Classic. LE Audio relies on LE Isochronous Channels, introduced in Bluetooth Core Specification 5.2. The Bluetooth SIG completed the LE Audio specification set on July 12, 2022, enabling products to qualify for support (Bluetooth SIG announcement).
LE Audio is not simply a newer codec that every Bluetooth device can use. A source, such as a phone, and an audio device both need the relevant LE Audio support. The Bluetooth SIG says an existing Classic Audio receiver is not automatically compatible with an LE Audio source; support for Classic Audio on an LE Audio device is also optional (Bluetooth SIG LE Audio FAQ).
1. More options for balancing sound quality and power
LE Audio includes LC3, or Low Complexity Communications Codec. It gives device makers options for balancing audio quality and power use. The Bluetooth SIG says extensive listening tests found LC3 could provide better audio quality than SBC, the codec included with Classic Audio, even at a 50% lower bit rate. That comparison is the SIG’s standards-body claim, not a guarantee that every LC3 product will sound better or last longer in every setup.

- Strong and Smart Noise Cancelling: Reduce noise by up to 42dB with an advanced active noise cancelling system. With adaptive technology, soundocre P30i detects external sound and automatically selects a level of noise cancelling optimized for your ears.
- Transparency Mode: Let in the world or focus on your audio, the choice is yours. Simply switch to transparency mode to hear the world around you when needed.
- Powerful Bass: Unleash deep, punchy bass with soundcore P30i noise cancelling earbuds' 10mm drivers, amplified by the soundcore exclusive BassUp technology for an immersive, robust audio experience.
- Long-Lasting Convenience: Enjoy up to 10 hours of playtime (6 hours with ANC) on a single charge, and up to 45 hours with the case (25 hours with ANC). A quick 10-minute charge provides 2 hours of use, perfect for your on-the-go lifestyle.
Actual results depend on the device implementation, codec settings, and listening conditions. LC3 makes these tradeoffs possible; it does not promise a particular battery-life gain or a universal sound improvement (Bluetooth SIG LE Audio overview).
2. Synchronized streams for better earbud coordination
Multi-Stream Audio supports multiple independent, synchronized streams from a source to one or more audio devices. In true wireless earbuds, this can enable each earbud to receive its own stream rather than relying on one bud to relay audio to the other. The Bluetooth SIG identifies potential benefits including improved stereo imaging and better support for voice-assistant use.
Those are implementation opportunities, not assurances about every pair of earbuds. A product must support Multi-Stream Audio, and the source and earbuds must work together using the feature (Bluetooth SIG LE Audio overview).

3. One-to-many listening with Auracast
Auracast is Bluetooth broadcast audio: a compatible transmitter can send audio for many compatible receivers to pick up. This makes shared listening possible without pairing each receiver as a separate one-to-one connection. Uses include sharing audio from a personal device and listening to a public display or venue sound system through compatible headphones or hearing devices.
Auracast is a defined interoperable configuration of Bluetooth broadcast audio based on the Public Broadcast Profile. A broadcast may be open or protected with a passkey. Auracast is optional, so an LE Audio label alone does not establish that a product can transmit or receive Auracast broadcasts. The Bluetooth SIG advises checking a manufacturer’s specifications for the exact support claimed (Bluetooth SIG Auracast FAQ).
4. A standards-based path for hearing aids
LE Audio adds support for hearing aids, providing a Bluetooth standards path for devices designed to connect directly to compatible sources. Android’s developer documentation describes Hearing Aid Profile support for calls and VoIP. That can make phone conversations and internet calls more accessible when the phone, software, and hearing aid support the required features.

Compatibility is specific to the hardware and software involved. Google documents built-in LE Audio support in Android 13 (API level 33), but that platform statement does not mean every Android phone, software build, or hearing aid supports every LE Audio function. Check the documentation for the exact phone and hearing aid (Android Developers: Bluetooth Low Energy Audio).
5. Separate broadcasts for languages and accessibility
Auracast can carry multiple broadcasts, which can let a venue offer separate language feeds or other audio choices. A listener with a compatible receiver could select the stream they need rather than relying on one shared loudspeaker mix. The same broadcast approach can support public or private audio sharing.
That flexibility depends on the transmitter, receivers, configuration, and venue deployment. It is not enough for a phone or headset to say “Bluetooth 5.2”: Auracast requires specific Core 5.2 features and the Public Broadcast Profile, and a product may omit it even if it supports other LE Audio features (Bluetooth SIG Auracast FAQ).

Do I need new headphones, and is Bluetooth 5.2 enough?
Not necessarily for every Bluetooth connection, but existing Classic Audio headphones are not automatically compatible with an LE Audio source. Some products may support both systems; manufacturers choose which modes and features to implement. “Bluetooth 5.2” by itself does not confirm LE Audio or Auracast support.
Before buying or troubleshooting a setup, check the specifications for each device rather than relying on the Bluetooth version number. Confirm the specific capabilities you need on both the source and the receiver:
- LE Audio: support for the LE Audio architecture.
- LC3: support for the LE Audio codec.
- Multi-Stream Audio: support at both ends if synchronized independent streams matter.
- Auracast: whether the device can transmit, receive, or both; these roles are not interchangeable.
- Hearing aid support: the relevant hearing aid profile and compatibility with the phone’s software.
- Classic Audio: whether the device also supports the older mode needed for existing equipment.
Android’s LE Audio documentation covers Android 13 (API 33) as a platform level; confirm the actual phone model, software build, and accessory support rather than assuming that all devices running Android have the same feature set (Android Developers).
LE Audio and Classic Audio at a glance
| Capability | Classic Audio | LE Audio |
|---|---|---|
| Radio | Bluetooth Classic | Bluetooth Low Energy |
| Codec | Includes SBC | Includes LC3; optional codecs may also be implemented |
| Multiple synchronized streams | Not the Multi-Stream Audio capability defined for LE Audio | Supports multiple independent synchronized streams when implemented |
| One-to-many broadcast | Does not provide Auracast broadcast audio | Can support Auracast; this feature is optional |
| Compatibility | Does not automatically connect to LE Audio-only devices | Classic Audio support is optional |
These distinctions describe the standards’ capabilities, not every product’s feature list. Many devices may support both modes, but the model’s specifications determine what works (Bluetooth SIG LE Audio FAQ; Bluetooth SIG LE Audio overview).
