“Blood-sucking biosensors” referred to a mosquito-inspired blood-testing concept called the Pelikan Sun—not a sensor made from mosquito biology. A 2004 report described a small needle collecting a tiny blood sample, then routing it through microfluidic channels to an electrochemical sensor that measured glucose.
What was the Pelikan Sun?
Chemistry World reported on July 1, 2004, that Cranfield University in the UK and Pelikan Technologies in the US had developed the Pelikan Sun. The device was launched at the Eighth World Congress on Biosensors in Spain that year. Its mosquito comparison referred to the way it obtained a blood sample, not to the use of mosquito parts or a biological sensor derived from mosquitoes. Chemistry World’s 2004 report is the source for the device details below.

Sampling: The needle made a preliminary “bounce” on the skin, which the report says was used to predict the force needed to puncture to a precise depth. It then collected a reported 400 nL of blood.

Transfer and measurement: Microfluidic channels carried the sample to an electrochemical biosensor, which measured glucose. The report put the process at around ten seconds.
Those mechanisms and figures are launch-era reporting; the article does not provide independent validation of the puncture method or clinical performance. Professor Tony Turner of Cranfield University described the approach as “virtually unnoticeable” in the 2004 report.

What did “mosquito-inspired” mean for people with diabetes?
The stated aim was to make repeated blood testing less unpleasant. Turner said in the report that a person with diabetes might need 6–10 blood samples per day. That is his attributed statement from 2004, not a current clinical recommendation or a universal testing schedule.

Was the Pelikan Sun ever sold, and is it available now?
The 2004 report establishes that the device was presented at a conference, but it does not establish whether it later went on sale, received regulatory authorization, or remains available. Its claims that the device was self-contained, clean and easy to use are developers’ claims quoted in that report, not findings from an independent evaluation. The source also does not establish present-day performance or compatible supplies.
