Ethereum blobs give rollups a separate market for publishing transaction data. More capacity can make that data cheaper when demand is below the market’s target, but lower posting costs do not automatically mean lower user fees, higher sequencer profits, or more revenue for Ethereum. Each outcome depends on how rollups use the savings and on conditions in the blob market.

What are blobs, and why do rollups need data availability?

A rollup processes transactions outside Ethereum’s main execution layer, then publishes data or state information to Ethereum. That data must be available so independent participants can check state updates. For an optimistic rollup, access to transaction data is important during the challenge period; validity-proof rollups use proofs to establish correctness, but relevant state data still needs to be accessible to users and verifiers.

With EIP-4844, introduced on Ethereum mainnet in March 2024 as part of Dencun, rollups can publish data in blob-carrying transactions. Blob data travels through Ethereum’s consensus layer and is not directly accessible to the EVM. It uses a separate fee market from ordinary execution gas, so the price of blob space can move differently from the cost of executing transactions.

Data availability does not require every node to download and keep every byte forever. Data availability sampling lets nodes check randomly selected portions; erasure coding adds redundancy so missing portions can be recovered. These techniques are part of the approach to scaling data capacity while allowing independent checks.

Are blobs permanent storage?

No. Ethereum.org describes the protocol’s blob-serving window as roughly 18 days. After that limited window, blobs are not guaranteed to remain available through the protocol. By contrast, calldata published to Ethereum remains part of its permanent history.

Blobs are therefore a temporary data-availability service, not archival storage or a privacy feature. While blob data is being served, it is public. Anyone who needs to retrieve rollup data over a longer period must rely on an archival source beyond Ethereum’s minimum serving window.

How does blob capacity affect the price rollups pay?

Blob space is a constrained resource with a target level of use and a maximum capacity. When demand presses against available capacity, competition can make posting more expensive. If capacity increases while demand stays below the target, rollups may be able to publish data at lower cost. If demand grows to use the additional space, the effect may be smaller or temporary. Capacity alone does not determine the price.

Ethereum’s parameters have changed over time. Galaxy Research reported that Pectra, activated May 7, 2025, raised the target and maximum from 3 and 6 blobs per block to 6 and 9. Those are historical post-Pectra figures, not a reliable statement of today’s parameters. The Ethereum Foundation’s 2025 updates described PeerDAS and BPO forks as part of a path to further capacity scaling; Ethereum.org’s Danksharding page, last updated June 24, 2026, describes full Danksharding as a later stage and data-availability sampling as necessary for further scaling.

Exact live capacity, utilization, fee floor, and blob price as of October 7, 2026 are not established by these dated sources. A current cost estimate needs current network data rather than an older target or a historical fee-market snapshot.

Who pays for data availability, and who benefits from cheaper blobs?

The rollup pays Ethereum to publish its batches. L2 users pay fees to the rollup, which decides how much of its costs to pass through. Ethereum receives L1 fees associated with posting. Because these are separate transactions between different participants, a change in one party’s costs does not dictate the others’ outcomes.

Stakeholder What can change when blob costs fall
L2 users The rollup can pass some savings through as lower fees, but its pricing and other costs also matter.
Sequencer or rollup operator It may retain more margin if costs fall faster than revenue, or pass savings through instead. Its operating costs and revenue affect the result.
Ethereum L1 Lower prices for data publication can mean less direct fee income per unit of rollup data, although greater usage can change total demand.
Ethereum node operators More capacity can mean more data to serve before pruning, so scaling has resource costs as well as fee-market effects.

That is why cheaper blobs are not unconditionally “good” or “bad” for ETH. The answer changes depending on whether the question is about L2 affordability, sequencer economics, L1 fee income, node burden, or long-term demand created by cheaper applications.

What have post-Dencun and post-Pectra observations shown?

Published analyses show that effects vary by period and rollup sample. They are historical observations, not a live ranking of L2s or a statement of current profitability.

Analysis Reported finding How to interpret it
Coinbase Institutional, post-Dencun analysis Average costs L2s paid to Ethereum fell by more than 90%, or approximately Ξ200–300 per day on average in the analysis. Coinbase said much of the saving flowed through to users and found onchain profitability results mixed. The figure describes its Dencun-era comparison, not present-day spending.
Galaxy Research, five full days after Pectra versus the preceding 60-day window Average blob use was below the new target, average daily blob-related costs were lower, and observed rollup margins after onchain costs improved. The result depends on those short comparison windows and the rollups in the sample; it does not establish that every rollup’s margin improved.

Read the user-fee, margin, and L1-revenue columns of the story separately: evidence that rollups spent less on posting does not by itself show how much users saved or how much profit operators retained.

Why can nominal blob capacity overstate practical efficiency?

The amount of space available is only part of the cost. Rollups also have to decide when to post, how to pack transactions, and how much data to include in a batch. Waiting to fill a blob can spread its fixed posting cost across more data, but if data arrives slowly, waiting can delay publication and transactions.

Heimbach and Milionis’s 2025 study of the early blob market identified suboptimal packing that at times produced up to 70% relative fee loss, along with a subset-bidding issue linked to transaction-structure inflexibility. These findings are evidence of early market-design frictions, not proof that the same inefficiencies persist at the same scale today. A 2023 Robust Incentives Group paper modeled the latency-versus-cost tradeoff before EIP-4844 launched; it explains the mechanism, rather than measuring present-day behavior.

Posting delays, partially filled blobs, and transaction packing can therefore influence effective cost even when headline capacity appears plentiful. How much they matter depends on each rollup’s data volume and posting strategy.

How should you compare L2 data costs?

A blob-fee snapshot alone cannot identify the cheapest or most economical rollup. For a meaningful comparison, use the same period and check:

  • Publication method: whether the rollup uses Ethereum blobs, calldata, or another data-availability arrangement.
  • Cost per transaction: account for batch size and compression, not only the total L1 posting bill.
  • User fees: check whether lower publication costs are passed through and compare like-for-like transaction types.
  • Operator economics: compare sequencer revenue with onchain and operating costs over the same measurement period.
  • Latency and access: consider how promptly batches are posted and how users or independent verifiers obtain the data they need.
  • Security assumptions: verify where data is made available and what assumptions users rely on to check rollup state.
  • Market conditions: account for changing L1 fee conditions and blob-market demand.

Without aligned periods and comparable methods, a cross-rollup price or profitability ranking can confuse differences in data volume, cost allocation, or security design with genuine efficiency.
