A Bitcoin liquidation is a forced closure of a leveraged futures or perpetual-futures position after the collateral supporting it no longer meets the exchange’s maintenance-margin requirement. The venue’s risk engine, rather than the trader, takes control and closes some or all of the position. Ordinary unleveraged spot Bitcoin ownership is not liquidated by this process; a spot holder can lose market value, but there is no borrowed-margin position for the exchange to force-close.
The exact trigger depends on the exchange, contract, margin mode, account equity, fees, funding and price reference used. A displayed liquidation price is therefore a conditional estimate, not a guaranteed execution price.
What are Bitcoin liquidations?
Leverage lets a trader control a Bitcoin derivatives position whose notional value is larger than the cash posted as margin. That margin is the collateral for potential losses. When the position moves against the trader, unrealized losses reduce the remaining equity buffer. The exchange also requires a minimum level of collateral, called maintenance margin, to keep the position open.
Liquidation begins when the applicable maintenance-margin threshold is breached. Binance describes its trigger as collateral plus realized and unrealized profit or loss falling below maintenance margin. Bybit describes isolated positions as liquidated when mark price reaches the displayed liquidation price, while cross-margin and portfolio modes use the account’s maintenance-margin ratio; in the FAQ it describes a 100% ratio as the liquidation threshold for those modes. Kraken documents triggers based on portfolio value or margin equity relative to maintenance margin for the specified contract types.

These are examples of venue rules, not one universal Bitcoin formula. A platform can liquidate a portion first, close the entire position, cancel related orders, charge a liquidation fee or use a backstop such as an insurance fund or auto-deleveraging. Read the current rules for the exact contract and account type before relying on a displayed number.
How the liquidation mechanism works
1. Initial margin opens the position
To open a leveraged long or short, you deposit initial margin. The position’s notional exposure can be several times larger than that deposit. Leverage does not change the market’s price move; it changes how large that move is relative to your posted margin. The same leverage that magnifies gains magnifies losses.
2. Maintenance margin keeps it open
Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires after the position is open. It is normally lower than the initial margin requirement, but the amount can vary with position size, risk tier, contract design and account mode. Trading fees, funding payments, realized profit or loss and other positions can also affect the available buffer.

3. Adverse unrealized PnL consumes the buffer
A long loses when the relevant Bitcoin price falls. A short loses when it rises. As the loss grows, the account or position has less equity available to satisfy maintenance margin. In cross or portfolio margin, profits and losses elsewhere in the account may change the result; isolated margin generally confines the allocated collateral to that position under the venue’s rules.

4. The risk engine takes over
Once the threshold is reached, the exchange attempts to close the position instead of allowing an increasingly undercollateralized trade to remain open. The engine may cancel open orders, reduce the position in stages or close it completely. In a fast market, the final fill can occur beyond the displayed trigger, creating a larger loss than the estimate implied.
Why was my Bitcoin position liquidated?
The immediate reason is that the position or account no longer had enough equity to satisfy maintenance margin. Several conditions can lead to that point:
- Leverage was high relative to the available buffer. A small adverse move creates a large percentage loss on the posted margin when notional exposure is large.
- The wrong direction was exposed. A falling Bitcoin price damages a long; a rising price damages a short.
- Mark price reached the trigger. The liquidation engine may use mark price rather than the last trade shown on a chart.
- Funding, fees or realized losses reduced equity. These charges can move the account closer to its threshold even when the chart appears nearly unchanged.
- Other positions affected a shared wallet. In cross or portfolio margin, an unrelated losing position can consume equity supporting the Bitcoin trade.
- Volatility changed the risk calculation. Maintenance requirements, risk tiers and available margin can change as position size and market conditions change.
After liquidation, the position is no longer exposed to a later recovery. The trader has realized the loss through the venue’s process rather than choosing a discretionary exit.

The liquidation price is the estimated mark-price level at which the venue expects the applicable margin condition to be breached. It is not necessarily the price at which the last trade occurred, and it is not a promise that the position will fill at that exact level. Kraken calls the displayed figure “an estimate of which mark price level can trigger a liquidation.”

The estimate can move when you add or remove margin, change position size, pay funding, realize profit or loss, open another position or when the platform’s risk parameters change. Cross and portfolio accounts can show a moving threshold because total account equity and other positions are part of the calculation. Even an isolated estimate can change after fees, funding or a change in the position.
Do not confuse three different prices:
- Liquidation trigger: the margin condition or mark-price level that causes the risk engine to act.
- Execution price: the actual price or prices obtained while the engine closes the position. In a rapid market, these can differ from the trigger.
- Bankruptcy price: a venue-defined level at which the position’s remaining equity is exhausted. Insurance-fund or auto-deleveraging rules may apply if closing the position produces a deficit.
Mark price versus last price
Last price is the most recent trade in the derivatives contract. Mark price is a separate reference designed to represent a fairer value and reduce liquidations caused by an isolated, abnormal trade. Binance says its mark price combines funding data with a basket of spot-exchange prices and uses it for unrealized PnL and liquidation calculations. Bybit likewise states that mark price, rather than last traded price, is the trigger reference in the modes covered by its FAQ.
Because the references differ, a chart can appear not to have reached the liquidation level while the mark price has. Conversely, a brief last-price spike may appear on the chart without immediately triggering liquidation if the mark price does not follow it. Always identify which price reference the venue uses for the contract you are trading.

Why did liquidation happen before my stop loss?
A stop-loss order only protects a position according to its own trigger reference and execution conditions. Bybit gives the specific failure case: if a stop is triggered by last traded price while liquidation uses mark price, mark price can reach the liquidation threshold first. The platform can then liquidate before the last-price stop condition fires.

Other differences can matter as well. A stop may be a market order after triggering, a limit order that fails to fill, or an order whose size does not cover the whole position. It can also be canceled when the position is liquidated. Check these settings in the contract’s order panel:
- Open the futures or perpetual contract details and identify the liquidation trigger reference.
- Open the stop-loss order details and identify whether the trigger is last price, mark price or another reference.
- Confirm whether the stop submits a market order or a limit order and whether its quantity covers the full position.
- Review reduce-only, close-on-trigger and order-cancellation behavior for that venue.
- Compare the order’s trigger history with the mark-price and last-price charts when investigating an unexpected liquidation.
No stop-loss setting guarantees that liquidation cannot occur. In a gap or very fast market, the trigger may be crossed before an order can execute.
Long and short examples
Long position
A leveraged long benefits from a rise in Bitcoin. If Bitcoin falls, the contract’s unrealized loss reduces the margin buffer. When the applicable mark price and maintenance-margin condition are reached, the engine closes the long. The trader cannot keep it open in the hope of a rebound unless additional margin is accepted before the threshold, and even that possibility depends on the venue’s rules and timing.

A leveraged short benefits from a fall. A sharp rise in Bitcoin creates the adverse loss, pushes equity toward maintenance margin and can trigger a forced close. A chart moving in the direction that would help a long can therefore be the event that liquidates a short.

Binance educational illustration
Binance’s futures education example uses opposing BTC/USDT perpetual positions, each with 1 BTC of notional exposure and 20x leverage. Under the assumptions in that illustration, both positions enter at $55,000; the long’s displayed liquidation price is $50,200 and the short’s is $59,750. The example demonstrates opposite directional risk, not a universal calculation or a current quote. Actual thresholds depend on margin, fees, contract rules, account mode and the venue’s mark-price method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens during and after liquidation?
- Threshold detection: the risk engine evaluates maintenance margin using the venue’s specified account and price references.
- Order intervention: open orders may be canceled so available collateral is not committed elsewhere.
- Position reduction: the venue attempts to close part or all of the position. Some platforms describe staged reduction before a full close.
- Fees and final accounting: liquidation fees and the actual execution prices are applied to the account.
- Backstop handling: if a position becomes bankrupt, the venue may use an insurance fund and, under its own rules, auto-deleveraging. These mechanisms are not universal.
Binance’s published protocol describes an attempt to reduce a deficit before full liquidation, followed where necessary by insurance-fund handling and potentially auto-deleveraging. Treat that as Binance’s process, not as a promise about another exchange.
Comparing liquidation rules across venues
| Factor | Why it matters | Examples documented in the sources |
|---|---|---|
| Margin mode | Determines whether the threshold uses a position’s allocated collateral or broader account resources. | Bybit distinguishes isolated from cross/portfolio calculations; Kraken describes portfolio-wallet effects for its specified contracts. |
| Price reference | Determines which price can trigger liquidation and whether it matches the visible last trade. | Binance and Bybit document mark-price triggers for the contexts described. |
| Contract type | Changes the PnL and margin mechanics. | Kraken documents different rules for linear and inverse contracts. |
| Partial versus full close | Determines whether exposure is reduced in stages or ended at once. | Binance describes a deficit-reduction process; exact staging is venue-specific. |
| Fees and backstops | Can change the final loss and how a bankrupt position is handled. | Liquidation fees, insurance funds and auto-deleveraging vary by venue. |
Comparing only the displayed liquidation price is misleading. Compare the trigger reference, margin mode, contract type, maintenance tiers, partial-liquidation rules, fees and bankruptcy backstop. Check the current contract specification because exchanges can change these parameters.
What historical data says—and does not say
A 2021 paper, “Liquidation, Leverage and Optimal Margin in Bitcoin Futures Markets” (arXiv:2102.04591), studied a historical BitMEX Bitcoin perpetual-futures sample. It reported an average daily forced-liquidation percentage of 3.51% for long positions and 1.89% for short positions, measured relative to open interest in that sample. The study also estimated average leverage of about 60x among liquidated traders: 58.13x for longs and 59.94x for shorts.
Those figures describe the paper’s sample and period, not current market-wide liquidation rates or the probability that a particular position will be liquidated. The authors also modeled margin levels associated with a 1% daily margin-call probability: approximately 33% margin, or 3x leverage, for longs and 20% margin, or 5x leverage, for shorts under their model and historical data. These are research outputs, not recommended leverage settings.
Quick Recap
How to investigate an unexpected liquidation
- Record the contract, settlement currency, margin mode and position size.
- Capture the displayed liquidation estimate and the account’s equity immediately before the event, if available.
- Check whether liquidation used mark price, last price or a portfolio margin ratio.
- Review funding payments, trading fees, realized PnL and other open positions.
- Compare the venue’s liquidation and bankruptcy records with the mark-price and last-price histories.
- Read the current contract risk limits and liquidation-fee schedule rather than relying on a screenshot or an older formula.
- If the event appears inconsistent with the published rules, preserve order IDs and timestamps before contacting the venue’s support team.
Key distinctions to remember
- Liquidation is a derivatives risk-control process, not a fall in the spot value of Bitcoin held without borrowing.
- Maintenance margin, not a single percentage price move, determines whether a leveraged position can remain open.
- Higher leverage leaves less room for an adverse move, while the exact distance to liquidation depends on the venue and account.
- Mark price can trigger liquidation even when the chart’s last trade has not reached the displayed level.
- The liquidation estimate can change, and the execution price can differ from the trigger in volatile markets.
- Insurance funds and auto-deleveraging are venue-specific backstops, not guaranteed features of every platform.
