Bioacoustics can tell researchers when and where animals produce detectable sounds, how those sounds are structured, and how calling patterns change with place, time or context. With repeated recordings and appropriate validation, those observations can support inferences about species occurrence, activity, behaviour, distribution and population trends. A recording is not, by itself, a translation of an animal’s language: it normally cannot prove what a call means, identify the individual that made it, establish that a silent animal is absent, or convert call totals directly into a population count.

The reliable path is to separate observation from interpretation. First establish that a sound event was recorded under defined conditions; then classify it, locate it or associate it with a caller; finally test the biological explanation against context, independent observations or experiments.

What bioacoustics and passive acoustic monitoring actually measure

Bioacoustics covers sound production, transmission, detection, discrimination, recognition and response. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) places microphones, hydrophones or other sensors in an environment and records sounds that are already present. Researchers then infer ecological information from those recordings. PAM does not emit a signal; that would be active acoustic monitoring. It is also different from an on-animal biologger, which may combine audio with GPS, accelerometry or other sensors.

An acoustic detection is deliberately modest: a sound event with specified features was captured and identified using a stated method. Claims become progressively stronger when they move from “a signal was detected” to “this is species X,” “individual Y made it,” “the call functions as an alarm,” or “there are N animals.” Each step adds assumptions and needs its own validation. The 2018 WWF acoustic-monitoring handbook and a 2025 practical review both stress that recording is the beginning of an inference chain, not the conclusion.

What can animal sounds tell us?

Occurrence and activity at a place and time

A recording can establish that a target sound was detected at a particular location and time, subject to the recorder’s sensitivity and the sound’s propagation conditions. Repeated deployments can reveal when calling activity rises or falls across hours, seasons and sites. Such patterns are useful for mapping occurrence, diel rhythms, breeding periods, migration windows or responses to disturbance, provided the sampling design remains comparable.

Measurable acoustic structure

Researchers can quantify frequency or pitch, duration, harmonics, amplitude, modulation, pulse structure, call rate and the timing between calls. These measurements describe the signal itself. They do not automatically identify its biological function: a distinctive frequency contour may help distinguish calls while still leaving its social meaning unknown.

Species or call classification

Reference libraries, expert annotations and machine-learning models can classify sounds when calls are sufficiently distinguishable and the method has been validated on recordings like those being analysed. Similar-sounding species, overlapping choruses, echoes, wind, rain, insects, boats and differences among microphones all increase confusion. Classification is an analytical result, not an inherent property of every recording.

Behavioural and environmental patterns

Spatial and temporal acoustic patterns may be consistent with foraging, courtship, contact, territorial activity, migration or a response to anthropogenic noise. A 2024 review in Trends in Ecology & Evolution describes behavioural bioacoustics as a way to move beyond simple presence records, while noting that identifying the function and context of signals remains difficult and that integrated studies are still uncommon. Researchers therefore connect acoustic data with direct observation, playback or response experiments where appropriate, movement data, habitat measurements or other sensors.

Long-term distribution and population trends

Standardised recordings collected over sufficient time can contribute to estimates of distribution and changes in populations. Comparisons fail, however, if microphones, placement, schedules, background noise, habitat or animal calling behaviour change in ways that alter detectability. A trend in recorded calls may reflect a trend in animals, a trend in vocal activity, or a change in the probability that the system captures a call.

Possible welfare indicators in managed animals

A 2024 scoping review in Applied Animal Behaviour Science describes research using animal sounds as indicators related to physical condition, health, behaviour and affective state. Routine farm-management implementation remains limited, and links between acoustic measures and welfare require further development. An acoustic signature should not be presented as a standalone diagnosis or proof of subjective emotion.

What sound alone usually cannot establish

The meaning or intention of a call

Labels such as alarm, courtship or contact describe a proposed function, not a direct translation. Stronger support comes from repeated associations with a defined context, responses to playback or naturally occurring calls, and replication across individuals and situations. Even then, the evidence normally supports a function under specified conditions rather than a universal “word” in an animal language.

Which individual called

In free-living animals, individuals are rarely identifiable from a recording alone. Some species have unusually distinctive voices or repertoires, but reliable identity claims are stronger when researchers know the individuals, use microphone arrays to estimate a source position, or combine recordings with tags and other observations. A species-level classification should not be silently upgraded to an individual attribution.

Absence of an animal

A quiet file can mean that no animal was within effective range, that the animal was silent, that its sound was masked, or that the recorder failed to capture the signal. PAM is conditional on an animal producing a sound that travels to a functioning sensor. “Not detected” is therefore not equivalent to “absent” unless a study has estimated detection probability under its actual conditions.

Abundance from raw call totals

Animals change vocal rates with behaviour and context. The WWF handbook’s vaquita case illustrates the problem: echolocation click rates differed between feeding and travelling, so click activity could be confounded with density. Estimating abundance requires explicit assumptions about vocal behaviour and detectability, calibrated detection ranges, suitable statistical designs or independent data; simply dividing a call count by a presumed calls-per-animal rate is not defensible.

A complete account of behaviour

A microphone samples sound, not the animal’s entire visual, social, physiological or movement context. Multi-sensor biologgers can add location and movement information, but tags introduce deployment, recovery, animal-handling and ethical constraints, including weight limits for smaller animals. Acoustic evidence is one stream in a behavioural record, not a complete biography.

Universal automated accuracy

A classifier trained on one species, habitat, sensor or noise profile may perform poorly after even modest changes. No universal accuracy percentage or general-purpose decoder of animal communication has been established. Models must be tested on data representative of the intended deployment, with missed detections and false positives reported.

How researchers move from a sound to a defensible conclusion

The practical pipeline separates increasingly demanding claims:

  1. Define the question. Decide whether the objective is presence, species identification, call structure, individual identity, behaviour, abundance or a temporal trend. Each objective needs different sampling and evidence.
  2. Specify the target signal. Record expected frequency range, duration, intensity, call rate and likely confounders. Include signals that may be missed because they are outside the sensor’s response.
  3. Choose and deploy sensors. Select handheld microphones, autonomous recording units (ARUs), microphone arrays, hydrophones or animal-borne devices according to habitat and question. Document coordinates, height or depth, orientation, gain, schedule and environmental conditions.
  4. Control the sampling design. Set recording windows, replication and duration before collection. Repeated, standardised deployments are more informative for trends than opportunistic clips.
  5. Process and detect candidate events. Filter or segment recordings, separate background sounds and mark possible target events. Automatic detection identifies candidates; it does not by itself classify species, locate a source or explain behaviour.
  6. Classify and validate. Use expert annotation, a reference library or a model, then check a representative sample for false positives and missed detections. Validation data should resemble the species, habitat, equipment, season and noise of the real deployment.
  7. Add context. Link detections to visual observations, environmental measurements, playback or response tests, movement tags, arrays or other independent evidence before making claims about function or identity.
  8. Quantify uncertainty. Report detection range, sampling effort, classifier performance, missing data and assumptions. Distinguish a recorded observation from the biological interpretation it supports.
  9. Preserve the audit trail. Keep original files, metadata, annotations, model versions and quality-control decisions so another analyst can reproduce the result.

As the Society for Conservation Biology guidance puts it, “Effective monitoring is not simply an act of recording sounds.”

Which recording method fits which question?

Method Useful for Important limits
Handheld microphone Targeted observations, quick checks and opportunistic recordings Short sampling windows and strong dependence on operator position and timing
Autonomous recording unit (ARU) Repeated, unattended sampling across sites and long periods Battery and memory maintenance; large data volumes; fixed sensor location
Microphone array Estimating direction or location of a sound source and strengthening identity claims Requires synchronised sensors, geometry and signal quality; overlapping calls remain difficult
Hydrophone or underwater detector Aquatic sounds such as odontocete echolocation clicks Water-column propagation, vessel noise and specialised deployment affect detectability
Animal-borne audio or biologging device Linking sound to the tagged animal’s movement or location Capture or handling, tag weight, battery life, recovery and welfare constraints

Detection range has no universal kilometre figure. It depends on signal level and frequency, habitat, vegetation or topography, background noise, weather, sensor specifications and placement. Some long-distance calls can carry kilometres in favourable conditions, but that observation must not be generalised to every species or recorder.

Can AI identify animal calls?

Yes, as a screening and classification aid under tested conditions. A model can scan thousands of hours faster than a person and flag candidate events for review. Its output remains conditional on the training examples and the deployment environment.

Why models fail after deployment

  • Training recordings may not represent the target species’ regional dialects, life stages or seasonal repertoire.
  • Different microphones, hydrophones, gains, sample rates or mounting positions alter the waveform.
  • Wind, rain, insects, machinery, boats and other animals create false positives or mask true calls.
  • Overlapping vocalisations can prevent clean segmentation and cause one event to be counted as several.
  • A model may learn site-specific background noise instead of the animal’s acoustic features.

What responsible validation looks like

Hold out recordings from the intended habitat and equipment, measure both false-positive and missed-detection rates, inspect errors by condition, and have experts review a meaningful sample of automated results. If the model is moved to another species, region or sensor, treat that as a new validation problem rather than assuming transfer.

Does not hearing an animal mean it is absent?

No. The relevant quantity is the probability of detecting a sound if an animal is present and vocalising. That probability changes with distance, direction, habitat absorption, masking noise, call frequency, recorder sensitivity and the animal’s own calling rate. Study designs can estimate detectability through repeated visits, simultaneous sensors, occupancy models, distance methods or calibrated experiments. Without such information, a non-detection supports only the narrower statement that no qualifying sound was captured during that sampling window.

What a real population example teaches

The WWF-UK 2018 handbook recounts a vaquita monitoring case in the Gulf of California in which 44 C-PODs were deployed from 2011 to 2015. The cited analysis reported a mean annual decline of 34% per year over that period. That is a historical estimate reported by the handbook, not a current population trend and not a result that can be reproduced by counting clicks without the same assumptions and study design.

The example demonstrates why acoustic population work needs many sensors, a defined period, knowledge of how vocal behaviour changes and a statistical model that connects detections to abundance. It does not establish that every species’ calls can be converted into a census.

How to design an acoustic monitoring programme

Start with an objective-led plan

Write the biological question before buying equipment: for example, “Is species A using these wetlands during spring?” is more actionable than “collect wildlife sounds.” Define the target signal, acceptable evidence, spatial replication, recording schedule, analysis method and decision threshold.

Plan for the physical environment

Account for frequency response, weather protection, power, storage, mounting height or depth, habitat structure and expected noise. ARUs reduce repeated human presence but require battery and memory-card changes. Handheld systems offer flexibility but can increase observer effects and inconsistent sampling.

Plan the data workflow

Estimate storage before deployment, preserve time synchronisation, record calibration and metadata, and budget for annotation and quality control. Autonomous units scale collection; they do not remove the labour of organising, checking and interpreting files.

Address people, partners and animals

Microphones may capture conversations, vehicles or other human activity. Discuss privacy, data access, landholder permissions and relevant partners before deployment. Consider whether equipment changes animal behaviour or creates disturbance, and follow applicable wildlife and research-ethics requirements.

The Society for Conservation Biology article gives an example of an Australian Acoustic Observatory programme covering 90 sites with four solar-powered sensors per site as reported in 2024. That is a case description, not a typical or universally required monitoring scale.

How to evaluate a bioacoustic claim

Question to ask Why it matters
What exactly was detected? Separates a measured sound event from a claim about species, individual or meaning.
Could the signal be masked or missed? Reveals whether a quiet recording can support an absence claim.
Was classification checked? Expert review and error rates show whether an automated label is reliable.
Does the evidence match the location and equipment? Transfer from another habitat, sensor or species may fail.
What independent context supports the interpretation? Behaviour and function require more than a waveform pattern.
Are call rates stable enough for counting? Changing activity can mimic changes in abundance.
What uncertainty and assumptions are reported? Readers can judge how far the conclusion extends beyond the recordings.

Bottom line: sound is evidence, not a translation

Bioacoustics is powerful because it can collect repeatable evidence over places and times that people cannot continuously observe. It can reveal vocal activity, signal structure and, with validated analysis, species patterns and ecological change. Its limits are equally important: sound alone rarely supplies meaning, individual identity, absence, abundance or a complete account of behaviour. The most credible conclusions state exactly what the recorder captured, how detection and classification were validated, which contextual evidence was added and which assumptions remain.
