Short answer: Bing can associate a search with the terms you entered and signals such as IP address and location, cookie identifiers, the time and date, and browser configuration. If you search while signed in to a Microsoft account, eligible activity may appear in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. You can stop new searches from being added and separately clear saved history, but neither control should be treated as a promise that every browser record, device copy, or backup disappears immediately.
What Bing can know about your searches
Microsoft Support says that when you use Bing, Microsoft collects the search terms you provide along with other information. The categories it names are your IP address and location, unique identifiers in cookies, the time and date of the search, and your browser configuration. These are Microsoft’s stated categories, not an independent audit, and they do not establish that every field is attached to every search in every situation.
- Search terms: the words, questions, names, or other text you submit.
- IP address and location: network and location signals that can help deliver locally relevant results.
- Cookie identifiers: identifiers Microsoft says can be associated with a browser or device.
- Time and date: when the search occurred.
- Browser configuration: information about the browser environment used for the request.
Microsoft says it uses search and related information to improve the search experience and its products and services. That statement describes Microsoft’s purpose for the data; it does not mean that a person is manually reading every search or that the same information is retained in the same form forever.
How search history affects results
Search history is one input to Bing’s suggestions and result personalization. Microsoft’s explanation of result delivery also identifies location, language, and device characteristics as relevance signals. Device characteristics can include the operating system, browser, and whether you are using a mobile phone, tablet, or desktop computer.

Suggestions while you type
Previous searches can help Bing propose suggestions as you enter a new query. Those suggestions are not a complete transcript of everything Microsoft knows about you; they are one visible use of stored or associated search activity.
Personalized results
Search history may influence which results Bing considers more relevant for you. Turning history off therefore addresses one personalization input, not every factor that affects ranking or presentation.
Location, language, and device context
A query can produce different results because Bing detects a different location, language, operating system, browser, or device type. Bing Settings includes controls for location and language, as well as options such as SafeSearch, voice search, search suggestions, and personalization. Changing one setting does not automatically change the others.

How to see your Bing search history
The correct place to look depends on whether you were signed in when you searched. Account-associated history and signed-out device history have different scopes.
Signed-in searches: Microsoft Privacy Dashboard
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you use with Bing.
- Open the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
- Go to the area for Browsing and search or search activity.
- Review the Bing entries that are available for that account.
Microsoft says Bing searches made while signed in can appear in the dashboard. “Can appear” matters: the dashboard is not guaranteed to be a complete, cross-device record. Display depends on factors such as sign-in status, product use, settings, service availability, and region.
Another route: Bing Search History
The Bing Search History page provides a direct history view and includes the control labeled Show new searches here. Its contents still depend on the sign-in state and device context in which searches were made.

Signed-out searches
Microsoft’s instructions describe a separate, device-level history for signed-out use. Searches made while signed out are not shown in the Microsoft account dashboard and are not controlled by the account-level history setting. If you use Bing on several signed-out devices, each device can have its own history to clear.
How to turn off Bing search history
Turning history off and deleting history are separate actions. Microsoft Support states: “When search history is off, nothing new is added to your search history.” The existing entries remain until you clear them.
- Open the Bing Search History page.
- Find the Show new searches here setting.
- Switch it off.
- Leave the page only after the setting visibly shows that new searches are no longer being added.
This control applies to the history scope represented by that Bing page. It does not erase your browser’s local history, searches made while signed out on another device, or records held by another search provider.

How to delete your Bing search history
Clear signed-in account activity
- Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the searches.
- Open the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
- Choose Browsing and search and locate Search history.
- Select Clear all activities.
- Confirm the deletion when Microsoft asks.
Microsoft says clearing data removes it from the dashboard and begins its removal from Microsoft’s systems. That wording describes a deletion process, not an instant guarantee that every copy has vanished at the same second.
Clear signed-out device history
- Open Bing Search History on the device where you searched while signed out.
- Delete individual searches, or choose the option to clear all history.
- Repeat on other devices where you used Bing while signed out.
Clear your browser history separately
Bing’s history controls address Bing search records in the account or device scope selected. Your browser may retain the page URL, typed query, or visit in its own history. Use the browser’s history and site-data controls separately if you also want to remove that local record. Microsoft’s Bing controls do not promise universal deletion from every browser, device, network log, or provider.
Why your search history may still be there after you turned it off
- Turning off is not clearing: the switch prevents new entries but leaves older entries in place.
- You checked the wrong scope: signed-out searches are device-specific and do not appear in the account dashboard.
- You used another account: a search made under a different Microsoft account belongs to that account’s activity.
- The browser has its own record: local browser history is separate from Bing history.
- The dashboard is not exhaustive: Microsoft lists unsupported features or regions, temporary display availability, cleared data, disabled collection settings, and activity that is not available on the dashboard as reasons information might not appear.
- Deletion is still propagating: Microsoft says some copies may remain in backup systems for a limited time after history is cleared.
A practical check is to identify the account and device used for the search, clear the relevant Bing scope, and then clear the browser record if that is also part of your goal.

What each privacy choice changes
| Choice or scope | What it changes | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off search history | Stops new searches from being added to the applicable Bing history. | It does not remove existing entries or browser history. |
| Clear search history | Removes Bing history from the account or device scope you clear. | It does not guarantee immediate removal of every backup copy or record held elsewhere. |
| Signed-in use | Eligible searches can appear in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. | The dashboard is not a complete record of every device or activity. |
| Signed-out use | History is handled as device-level Bing history. | It is not shown in the account dashboard and is not changed by the account setting. |
| Bing history controls | Manage Bing search records in the selected scope. | They do not erase local browser records or histories held by other services. |
| Other Bing settings | Adjust inputs such as location, language, SafeSearch, voice search, suggestions, and personalization. | Changing one setting does not disable every other personalization signal. |
How long Microsoft says data may be retained
Microsoft’s search-history support page gives two different time statements, and they should not be collapsed into a single “Bing deletes everything after X” rule.
18 months and personalization identifiers
Microsoft states that after 18 months it no longer uses cookies and other identifiers that could be linked to a specific account or device to personalize your search experience. This is a statement about using linkable identifiers for personalization. It is not a claim that all underlying search data is deleted after 18 months.
Up to five years for authenticated-user data
The same page says that, “In the coming months,” Microsoft will retain data from authenticated users for up to 5 years to help improve products and services. Microsoft says sensitive information will be removed and privacy safeguards applied before data is kept longer, and that users can delete search data at any time, including data stored for longer periods.
Recommended Free Tools
The phrase “In the coming months” is relative wording without a clear start date on the page. Do not interpret it as proof that every account is currently kept for exactly five years. Neither figure is a user-count, effectiveness, or adoption statistic.
A complete privacy check for Bing users
- Identify the search state: determine whether the search was made while signed in, signed out, or under another Microsoft account.
- Check the account dashboard: review the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard for eligible signed-in activity.
- Check Bing Search History: inspect the history page and the Show new searches here setting.
- Choose the action: turn off new collection, clear existing account activity, or clear signed-out device history as appropriate.
- Review personalization inputs: open Bing Settings and check location, language, SafeSearch, voice search, suggestions, and personalization.
- Clean local traces: use your browser’s history and site-data controls if you also want to remove local records.
- Allow for scope and timing: verify other devices and accounts, and remember that dashboard availability and backup removal are not instantaneous or universal.
What Microsoft’s controls can—and cannot—tell you
The controls give you practical ways to inspect eligible account activity, stop new Bing history entries, and request deletion of saved history. They do not provide an all-purpose forensic inventory of every network request, browser visit, device log, or copy that may exist temporarily in backup systems. Microsoft’s documentation describes its stated practices and interface steps; it does not independently verify internal implementation for every account, region, or interface version.
If your goal is less personalized search rather than deletion alone, use both kinds of controls: manage search history and review the separate Bing and Microsoft account settings that govern location, language, device context, suggestions, and personalization.
