Short answer: Microsoft documents what Bing collects and how Bing search history is managed, but it does not publish a separate retention schedule or complete data inventory specifically for Bing AI Mode. Treat an AI Mode interaction as part of the broader Bing search context only where Microsoft’s general Bing documentation applies; do not assume that Copilot’s privacy controls or promises automatically govern AI Mode.

If you use Bing while signed in to a personal Microsoft account, associated search activity can appear on the Microsoft privacy dashboard. You can stop new entries with Bing’s Show new searches here setting and separately clear existing activity. Those actions are different, and clearing can leave backup copies for a limited time while removal proceeds.

What Microsoft actually documents about Bing AI Mode

Microsoft’s current support material explains Bing search history and separately explains privacy controls for consumer Copilot. The Microsoft pages available as of October 13, 2026, do not provide a dedicated Bing AI Mode page that lists every stored field, identifies a feature-specific retention period, or states exactly how every AI Mode prompt, response, click, or follow-up is handled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because AI Mode combines a conversational interface with Bing search. You can use the documented Bing controls to manage account-linked search history, but you should not present them as proof that every AI Mode prompt is stored, deleted, trained on, or retained for a particular number of days. Likewise, Copilot’s web-search switch, chat-history controls, and generated-query protections are documented for Copilot products, not as universal Bing AI Mode controls.

The safest approach is to separate three questions: what Bing says it collects during search, where a particular account’s activity can be viewed, and which action actually stops or deletes history. The answer can change depending on whether you use a personal Microsoft account, remain signed out, or use a work or school account.

What Bing says it collects

Microsoft says that when you search with Bing, it collects the search terms you provide and related technical or contextual information. The categories named in its search-history documentation include:

  • The search terms you enter.
  • Your IP address.
  • Your location.
  • Unique identifiers in cookies.
  • The date and time of the search.
  • Your browser configuration.

Microsoft says it uses this and other information to enhance the user experience and improve its products and services. The list is useful for understanding the general Bing search data pathway, but it is not a separate, AI Mode-specific inventory. Microsoft does not say on these pages whether every conversational turn, generated answer, attached context item, or answer citation is retained in exactly the same way as a conventional search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Technical details can still matter even when a query is not personally identifying on its face. An IP address, location signal, cookie identifier, timestamp, and browser configuration can help distinguish sessions or devices. Whether those details are connected to an account depends in part on your sign-in state and the product or organization involved.

What signing in changes

When you search Bing while signed in to a personal Microsoft account, the activity can be associated with that account and shown on the Microsoft privacy dashboard. The dashboard can let you review search terms and clicked results and clear account-linked search history.

Signing in is therefore more than a convenience for synchronization. It gives Microsoft an account context in which activity can be displayed and managed through account controls. It also means that deleting one account’s history will not necessarily affect searches made under another account or while no account was signed in.

Searches made while you are not signed in are not covered by the account dashboard in the same way. Microsoft describes signed-out history as being handled on the device through Bing’s Search History page. Therefore, deleting activity from a Microsoft account does not reach searches that were never associated with that account.

Retention periods Microsoft publishes—and what they do not prove

Microsoft’s general Bing search-history article gives two time periods. They are policy statements about Bing search, not independently verified schedules for Bing AI Mode alone.

Published period What Microsoft says How to interpret it for AI Mode
18 months For personalized search, Microsoft says it stops using cookies and other identifiers that could be linked to a specific account or device after 18 months. This concerns the use of identifiers in personalized search. It is not a promise that every AI Mode prompt is deleted after 18 months.
Up to five years Microsoft says authenticated search data may be retained for up to five years to improve products and services. Before retaining data longer, it says sensitive information will be removed and privacy safeguards applied. This is Microsoft’s general authenticated-search policy. It is not a confirmed AI Mode-only retention timetable.

The 18-month statement concerns how cookies and other identifiers may be used for personalized search. It does not say that the underlying query, answer, or conversation disappears at month 18. The up-to-five-year statement concerns authenticated search data used to improve products and services. It is a maximum described in the general search policy, not a statement that each record is kept for five years or that AI Mode conversations follow that exact schedule.

Microsoft also says search data can be deleted at any time. Deletion is a user action, while the periods above describe how Microsoft says certain search data or identifiers may be handled under its general policy. Do not turn either figure into a claim that all AI Mode conversations remain for exactly that long. No named user-behavior statistic establishes how many people enable AI Mode or switch off history.

Manage history for a personal Microsoft account

Use two separate actions: first stop future searches from being added, then clear entries that already exist. Turning off history is not the same as deleting history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Review account-linked activity

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard with the personal Microsoft account used for Bing.
  2. Open Browsing and search or Search history.
  3. Review the searches and, where available, clicked-result activity associated with the account.

The dashboard is the account-level place Microsoft identifies for viewing and clearing Bing activity tied to a personal account. If nothing appears, verify the account address and consider whether the search was made while signed out or under a work or school identity.

2. Stop new searches from appearing

  1. Open any Bing.com page while signed in.
  2. Open the page menu and choose History.
  3. Find the Show new searches here setting.
  4. Turn the setting off.

This prevents new searches from being added through that history control. It does not erase entries already listed. The setting is best understood as a forward-looking collection preference, not a deletion command.

3. Clear existing history

  1. Return to the Microsoft privacy dashboard.
  2. Open Browsing and search.
  3. Under Search history, use the available clear-history action.
  4. Confirm the deletion when Microsoft asks.

Turning off Show new searches here alone leaves old entries in place. Clearing the dashboard history is a separate step. If you want both outcomes, perform both actions and then refresh the history view to confirm what remains visible.

What happens after clearing

Microsoft says clearing removes the history from the account and starts system removal. It also cautions: “When you clear your search history, some copies may be retained within Microsoft’s backup systems for a limited time.” In practical terms, the account view can be cleared without guaranteeing instantaneous disappearance from every backup system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That backup qualification is not a reason to avoid clearing. It explains why a deletion request and the disappearance of every internal copy are not necessarily simultaneous. Microsoft’s wording does not provide a precise duration for those backup copies, so do not promise a specific number of hours or days.

Manage history when you are signed out

Signed-out searches follow a different path. Microsoft says they are handled on the device and do not appear in the Microsoft-account privacy dashboard.

  1. Open Bing’s Search History page on the device where the signed-out searches were made.
  2. Use the page’s device-history clearing controls.
  3. If you use more than one device or browser, repeat the check on each one where local history may exist.

Do not expect a dashboard deletion to remove searches that were made without an account association. Conversely, turning off an account history setting does not necessarily control every local, signed-out history record. A browser’s own history, cached content, downloaded files, and network records are separate from Bing’s account-history view and may require separate cleanup.

Manage a work or school account

Microsoft provides a separate clearing route for work and school accounts. Do not reuse the personal-account dashboard procedure without checking which account is active.

  1. Open Bing’s Search History page.
  2. Find Manage or clear your search history.
  3. Choose Clear all.
  4. Complete any confirmation shown by the organization’s sign-in or policy system.

Organizational accounts can be subject to tenant administration, audit, retention, or legal policies that differ from consumer-account behavior. Microsoft’s consumer Copilot activity-history help is explicitly not a complete guide to organizational accounts. Your administrator may also provide separate policies or tools for reviewing organizational activity.

Private browsing does not make an organizational search invisible

A private or incognito browser window mainly limits local browser storage. It does not guarantee that Microsoft, an employer, or a school cannot associate a search with a signed-in account. If you sign in to an organizational account in a private window, the account can still be identifiable to the service and subject to organizational controls.

Private browsing also does not turn an account-linked search into a signed-out search. Check the identity shown in Bing before assuming that an incognito session changes which history surface applies.

Do Copilot privacy controls manage Bing AI Mode?

Microsoft documents a separate set of controls for Copilot for individuals. Depending on the account and product experience, those controls include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Memory.
  • Chat history.
  • Shared experiences.
  • Web search.
  • Personalized advertising.
  • Importing Edge browser data.

For a signed-in consumer Copilot account, Microsoft’s documented route for disabling Copilot web search is Settings > Personalization > Web search. That switch applies to Copilot’s web-search feature. Microsoft does not say that turning it off disables Bing AI Mode history or prevents manually entered Bing AI Mode searches from being recorded.

Similarly, deleting Copilot activity history is not documented as a way to delete Bing Search History entries. Memory, shared experiences, advertising, and imported Edge data are separate settings with their own scopes. A control can be useful for Copilot while having no stated effect on the Bing history page.

Microsoft also says that web queries generated by Copilot and Copilot Chat are sent to Bing with user and tenant identifiers removed. It says those generated queries are not used to improve Bing, build advertising profiles, track user behavior, or be shared with advertisers. Those commitments are expressly scoped to Copilot-generated web-search queries. They should not be transferred to manually entered Bing AI Mode searches without a Microsoft statement that does so.

Controls that are easy to confuse

Search-history controls versus SafeSearch

Search history determines whether searches are recorded and whether existing activity is cleared. SafeSearch filters the types of results shown. Changing SafeSearch does not turn Bing search history off or delete history. A stricter result filter can be appropriate for content safety, but it is not a data-retention setting.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Stopping new entries versus deleting old entries

The Show new searches here toggle controls future additions. Existing records require the separate clear-history action. Treat these as two independent settings whenever you are checking whether a search remains visible.

Account history versus local browser history

Clearing the Microsoft privacy dashboard addresses account-linked activity. It does not necessarily remove a browser’s local history, downloaded data, cached pages, network logs, or records held under a work or school account. Local and organizational records have their own controls and policies.

Search history versus AI conversation history

Microsoft’s documentation treats Bing search history and Copilot activity or chat history as different control surfaces. The existence of a conversation transcript in one product does not establish that it is listed in the other. Until Microsoft publishes a direct AI Mode mapping, manage the Bing history surface and any separate conversation surface you actually use.

A practical privacy routine for Bing AI Mode

  1. Identify the account state before searching. Check whether Bing shows a personal account, a work or school account, or no account.
  2. Use the correct history surface. Personal account activity belongs on the privacy dashboard; signed-out and organizational activity use Bing’s Search History page and applicable local or tenant controls.
  3. Disable future additions if that is your goal. Turn off Show new searches here.
  4. Clear existing records separately. Use the account dashboard or the account-specific Bing clearing path.
  5. Check local records. If the search was signed out, review the device and browser history where it was made.
  6. Do not infer AI Mode behavior from Copilot settings. Copilot’s web-search, chat-history, and advertising controls have their own product scope.
  7. Allow for deletion delays. Microsoft says some backup copies may remain for a limited time after clearing.
  8. Recheck after account changes. If the history view still shows entries, confirm that you cleared the same account and the correct history surface rather than relying on a different browser profile.

Troubleshooting common privacy questions

“I turned off history, but old searches still appear.”

The toggle stops new entries; it does not delete existing history. Use the separate clear action under the Microsoft privacy dashboard’s Browsing and search area, or the relevant Bing Search History page for a signed-out or work/school account.

“My search is not on the privacy dashboard.”

Check whether you were signed out, used a different Microsoft account, or searched under a work or school account. Microsoft says searches made while not signed in are not affected by account-dashboard deletion and do not appear there as personal-account activity.

“I cleared history, but I am worried it still exists.”

Microsoft says clearing removes history from the account, while some backup-system copies may be retained for a limited time as removal proceeds. The documented statement does not promise immediate erasure from every backup.

“Will disabling Copilot web search stop Bing AI Mode from recording searches?”

Microsoft’s Copilot documentation does not make that connection. The Copilot switch controls Copilot’s web-search feature; Bing AI Mode history must be managed through the Bing controls that apply to your account state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Does SafeSearch stop Bing from collecting history?”

No. SafeSearch changes result filtering. History collection and deletion are controlled separately.

“Does a private window hide my search from my employer or school?”

Not necessarily. Private browsing limits some local browser storage, but a search made while signed in to an organizational account can still be associated with that account and governed by organizational policies.

“If I clear the dashboard, does my browser history disappear too?”

No. The dashboard action addresses account-linked Bing activity. Browser history, cached pages, downloads, and other device or network records have separate controls.

What remains undocumented for Bing AI Mode

Microsoft’s published Bing material supports a careful answer: Bing collects search terms and related technical or contextual data; signed-in personal-account searches can appear on the privacy dashboard; and users can stop new history entries or clear existing activity. It does not establish a complete, feature-specific inventory for Bing AI Mode or a distinct AI Mode retention schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also does not establish that every AI Mode response is treated identically to a manually entered web query, that every conversation is used for model training, or that a Copilot-generated query’s privacy commitments apply to an AI Mode query. Those claims require a direct, current Microsoft statement.

That is why the safest interpretation is specific rather than absolute. Use the documented Bing history controls, distinguish personal, signed-out, and organizational accounts, and avoid treating Copilot policies or general Bing retention periods as guarantees about every AI Mode prompt, response, or generated query.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bing AI Mode search history the same as Copilot chat history?

Microsoft documents Bing search-history controls and Copilot activity or chat-history controls separately. The published pages do not establish that one control surface governs the other, so manage Bing history through Bing’s history settings and treat Copilot controls as product-specific.

How do I stop new Bing searches from being saved?

On Bing.com, open the menu, choose History, and turn off Show new searches here. This stops new entries through that control but does not delete searches already listed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I delete Bing searches from a personal Microsoft account?

Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard, open Browsing and search or Search history, and use the clear-history action. Microsoft says some backup copies may remain for a limited time while removal proceeds.

Does Microsoft publish a Bing AI Mode retention period?

No separate AI Mode schedule is documented. Microsoft’s general Bing policy mentions 18 months for using identifiable cookies and other identifiers in personalized search and up to five years for certain authenticated search data used to improve products and services. Those periods should not be presented as AI Mode-specific guarantees.

What happens if I search Bing while signed out?

Microsoft says signed-out history is handled on the device and does not appear as personal-account activity on the privacy dashboard. Use Bing’s Search History page and check each device or browser where the searches were made.

Can my employer or school see a Bing search made in a private window?

A private window does not guarantee invisibility. If you are signed in to a work or school account, the search can still be associated with that account and subject to organizational administration, audit, or retention policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off Copilot web search disable Bing AI Mode history?

Microsoft’s Copilot documentation does not say that it does. The Copilot setting controls Copilot’s web-search feature; use the Bing history controls that match your account state for Bing activity.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Microsoft documents general Bing collection and history controls, not a separate Bing AI Mode retention schedule. Check whether you are using a personal, signed-out, or work/school account; turn off Show new searches here to stop future entries; clear existing history separately; and remember that Copilot settings, SafeSearch, private browsing, and local browser history address different privacy layers.
