Bank earnings can answer three practical questions, but only when you read the income statement alongside the balance sheet: Are loans expanding, are borrowers still paying, and is the spread between asset yields and funding costs supporting profits? The latest U.S. evidence shows why none of those questions has a one-line answer. Bank loan balances were 5.6% higher year over year at the end of 2025, yet growth must be judged by loan type, pricing, underwriting and funding. Net interest margin (NIM) summarizes interest performance, but repricing lags and deposit costs can move in opposite directions. Credit quality requires a trend in delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, provisions and reserves.
Use earnings as evidence about a bank’s recent operating performance and balance sheet—not as a standalone buy or sell signal. Aggregate Federal Reserve data provide context; the individual bank’s filings, definitions and sensitivity disclosures determine whether that context applies.
Start with the balance sheet: what is actually growing?
Loan growth adds earning assets, but “more loans” is not automatically a positive. Begin with both average loans (which drive a period’s interest income) and period-end loans (which show the balance-sheet position at the reporting date). Then identify the categories responsible for the change. Typical disclosures separate commercial and industrial (C&I), commercial real estate (CRE), residential real estate, consumer loans and lending to nondepository financial institutions.
Measure growth on two time horizons
Compare year-over-year growth with sequential, quarter-to-quarter growth. Annualized sequential growth can make a small one-quarter movement look dramatic, especially when the starting balance is unusual. A bank may also report average balances that differ materially from period-end balances, so label which measure you are using. The Federal Reserve reported U.S. bank loan balances 5.6% above the prior year at the end of 2025. That is a system aggregate, not a forecast for any particular institution.

Identify the mix and concentration
Broad growth across several categories generally tells a different story from a surge concentrated in one portfolio. C&I loans may reflect business borrowing and working-capital demand; CRE growth can increase exposure to property values, vacancies and refinancing conditions; consumer growth can carry different payment and loss patterns. A large increase in a single sector, geography or borrower type raises concentration questions even when total growth looks healthy.
Check whether funding keeps pace
Compare loan growth with deposit growth and the composition of deposits. Stable, lower-cost operating deposits can support new lending differently from rate-sensitive deposits or wholesale funding. If loans expand faster than deposits, the bank may need more expensive brokered deposits, certificates, borrowings or other wholesale sources. That change can compress future net interest income even while current loan balances rise.
In its discussion of large banks in the first quarter of 2026, the Federal Reserve said balance sheets expanded, with loan growth driven by C&I lending and funded by deposit growth. Read an individual bank’s tables to determine whether its own expansion has the same driver and funding profile.

Read credit quality as a sequence, not a single ratio
Credit deterioration usually appears in stages. Delinquencies can rise before a loan is classified as nonperforming; charge-offs record losses after a loan is written down; provisions change current earnings when expected losses are updated; and the allowance provides a balance-sheet buffer. Look at all of these measures by portfolio and across several quarters.
Delinquencies and past-due loans
Delinquency or past-due loans are an early sign that borrowers are missing scheduled payments. Confirm the bank’s threshold—such as 30, 60 or 90 days past due—and whether nonaccrual loans are included or reported separately. A change in the definition or in the mix of loans can make a ratio appear to improve without a comparable change in underlying risk.

Nonperforming and nonaccrual loans
Nonperforming or nonaccrual status indicates more serious stress and can interrupt interest recognition. Banks use specific definitions, so compare like with like within the same institution and reporting period. A rising nonaccrual balance alongside stable delinquencies can signal that older problem loans are migrating into a more severe category.
Net charge-offs
Net charge-offs are realized losses after recoveries. The Federal Reserve’s charge-off series presents them net of recoveries as a percentage of average loans, annualized. Charge-offs reduce the loan balance and are charged against loss reserves. They are backward-looking: a low current rate may simply mean expected losses have not yet worked through the portfolio.

The provision is an income-statement expense, not the same thing as a charge-off. Management can increase the provision because its expected-loss estimate has worsened, even before borrowers default. Conversely, a provision release can lift earnings while the underlying portfolio remains exposed to future losses. Read management’s explanation, then compare provision expense with loan growth, delinquencies and charge-offs.
Allowance and reserve coverage
The allowance for credit losses is the balance-sheet reserve against expected losses. Consider its movement relative to noncurrent or nonperforming loans and to the portfolio’s changing composition. A larger allowance is not automatically safer: it may reflect a riskier mix, updated forecasts or rapid growth. A declining allowance can be benign when risk falls, or concerning when coverage is weakening while problem loans rise.
Put the U.S. aggregate numbers in context
The Federal Reserve’s year-end 2025 supervisory report placed total loan delinquency at 1.6%, below its stated long-run historical average of about 3%, while noting slight increases across several major categories during 2025. Its commercial-bank quarterly series lists total delinquency at 1.50% in 2025 Q4 and 1.38% in 2026 Q2. These figures come from different presentations and periods; do not blend them into one continuous measure without naming the series. Neither aggregate value describes every bank or loan book.

Understand NII and NIM before interpreting rate moves
Net interest income
Net interest income (NII) is interest earned on loans, securities and other earning assets minus interest paid on deposits and other funding. It can increase because assets yield more, because the bank has more earning assets, or because funding costs fall. It can decline even when rates are high if deposit costs rise faster than asset yields or if earning-asset balances shrink.
Net interest margin
Net interest margin is NII divided by average earning assets, the Federal Reserve’s definition. NIM is a useful summary of spread performance, but it is not a complete earnings measure. A bank can report a higher NIM on a smaller balance sheet, while fee income, expenses or credit provisions determine whether net income actually improves. Conversely, NIM can fall while total NII rises if earning assets grow enough.
Separate asset repricing from liability repricing
Loans and securities do not reset at the same speed as deposits and wholesale funding. Floating-rate loans may reprice quickly; fixed-rate mortgages and bonds may not. Depositors may accept low rates for a time, then move into higher-yielding accounts as market rates rise. When rates fall, asset yields may decline before deposit costs fully adjust. Ask:
- What share of assets is floating-rate, fixed-rate or hedged?
- When do major loan books reset, and what floors or caps apply?
- How much have deposit rates and deposit balances changed?
- Is funding shifting toward certificates, brokered deposits or wholesale borrowings?
- What rate-sensitivity scenarios does management disclose for NII?
A policy-rate move therefore does not mechanically predict a bank’s profit. The timing, mix and funding response matter more than the headline rate change.
Interpret changes in NIM carefully
A rising NIM may result from higher asset yields, lower funding costs, a favorable mix shift or all three. A falling NIM may reflect deposit-cost pressure, lower loan yields, securities repricing or a change toward lower-yield assets. Require management to identify the contribution of rates, volumes and mix; do not attribute the entire move to central-bank policy.

Look beyond interest income for the earnings driver
Bank earnings include noninterest income, operating expenses and credit-loss provisions. Fees from payments, wealth management, investment banking and capital markets can offset a flat or declining NII, while trading results can be volatile. Expenses and provisions can overwhelm a favorable NIM.
The Federal Reserve reported that large banks’ aggregate return on equity reached 14% in the first quarter of 2026, up from 12% in the fourth quarter of 2025. NII was flat quarter over quarter; stronger noninterest income, including record capital-markets revenue and higher wealth-management and payments fees, drove the improvement described in that report. This example shows why a higher return on equity does not necessarily mean the interest spread improved.
A repeatable earnings-reading process
- Set the comparison. Use the same quarter, year-over-year and sequential periods, and note whether figures are averages or period-end balances.
- Map loan growth. Record total loans, each major category, and any disclosed concentration. Separate volume growth from changes caused by acquisitions, sales or foreign-exchange movements.
- Trace the funding. Compare deposits with loans, then examine deposit mix, deposit costs and wholesale funding.
- Build a credit trend. Put delinquencies, nonaccruals, net charge-offs, provision expense and allowance coverage in one worksheet for at least several quarters.
- Bridge NII and NIM. Note average earning assets, asset yields, interest expense, funding costs and the bank’s stated rate sensitivity.
- Explain total earnings. Reconcile NII with fee and trading income, operating expenses, taxes and provisions. Identify which item caused the period’s change.
- Test the conclusion. Ask whether the result depends on a one-time item, a volatile market business, unusually low provisions or a balance-sheet mix that may not persist.
How to compare two banks without creating a misleading scorecard
| Comparison area | What to collect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Loan growth | Average and period-end balances; year-over-year and sequential changes; category mix | Shows demand, balance-sheet expansion and concentration risk |
| Funding | Deposit growth, deposit mix and cost; wholesale reliance where disclosed | Shows whether growth is funded sustainably and at what price |
| Credit | Delinquencies, nonaccruals, charge-offs, provision and allowance coverage | Distinguishes growth from deterioration and timing of losses |
| Rate sensitivity | NII, NIM, asset yields, deposit costs, repricing profile and disclosed scenarios | Explains how changing rates may affect future earnings |
| Earnings quality | NII versus fees and trading income; expenses; credit-loss provision | Separates recurring operating performance from volatile or one-time drivers |
Keep accounting treatments and loan definitions consistent. A comparison is weak if one bank reports average loans and another reports period-end loans, or if one includes a category in delinquency that the other excludes. Use each issuer’s regulatory filings and investor materials for company-specific values, and use Federal Reserve aggregates only as sector context.
Common misreadings and how to correct them
“Fast loan growth means the bank is winning.”
Correction: identify the category, pricing, underwriting standards, concentration and funding source, then monitor whether credit costs follow.
“A low delinquency rate proves the book is safe.”
Correction: check nonaccruals, charge-offs, provisions and allowance coverage. Delinquencies are only one point in the loss cycle.

“A higher NIM means profits must be higher.”
Correction: compare NII, average earning assets, fee income, expenses and provisions. Margin is a ratio, not net income.
“Central-bank rate cuts or hikes give an immediate earnings forecast.”
Correction: inspect repricing dates, deposit betas, fixed-versus-floating assets and management’s sensitivity scenarios. Balance-sheet timing can delay or reverse the expected effect.
“One quarter’s aggregate data describes my bank.”
Correction: aggregate series cover a broad population and may use different definitions or reporting dates. Read the issuer’s own disclosures before drawing an investment conclusion.
What a well-supported conclusion looks like
A defensible earnings takeaway links cause to consequence: for example, “C&I balances grew year over year and were funded by deposits; NIM narrowed as deposit costs rose; delinquencies and charge-offs remained contained, but the provision increased because management raised expected losses.” That statement is more informative than “earnings were strong” because it identifies the growth engine, funding pressure, credit signal and forward-looking estimate.
Use the same discipline each quarter. Loan growth tells you where the bank is deploying capital; credit measures tell you what that deployment is costing; NII and NIM show the spread earned after funding; and noninterest income, expenses and provisions explain the final profit. Together, those disclosures let investors form a grounded view without treating any single ratio as a buy or sell signal.
