Automatic content recognition (ACR) is software that identifies what is playing on a television by analyzing brief audio or video samples, creating a signature or fingerprint, and matching it with information in a catalog or on a server. It can recognize content from the TV tuner, an antenna, cable or a set-top box, a streaming device, a built-in app, a DVD or Blu-ray player, and other connected sources.
That identification can power recommendations, audience measurement, or advertising. It can also send viewing information to the TV maker or its partners, depending on the model, region, software and privacy choices. ACR is not a person watching through the screen, and it is not merely a log of which app you opened; it is automated content matching. The exact data collected and the available controls must be checked on your own television.
ACR is content matching, not an app-usage log
An app-usage log records events such as opening a streaming application. ACR attempts to determine the program, film, advertisement or other material actually playing. The television samples a small portion of the audio or video, derives a mathematical signature, and compares that signature with a catalog or service operated by the manufacturer or a provider.

Because the system looks at the signal being displayed or heard, it can work when the source is not a built-in smart-TV app. A channel arriving through an antenna, a cable box connected by HDMI, a streaming stick, or a disc player may all be within the scope of an implementation. Recognition is not guaranteed for every source or every program: catalogs, software, regional rights and the television’s technical design determine what can be matched.

Implementations also differ in what leaves the television. A notice may describe sending a signature rather than raw video, while another design may process more of the analysis locally. Do not assume that all televisions sample in the same way, transmit the same fields, or identify every show.
How a smart TV recognizes what is playing
- Sampling: The television captures a short snippet or examines frames from the current signal. An FTC PrivacyCon transcript from February 28, 2018, described televisions taking small snippets to assess what viewers were watching.
- Signature creation: Software converts the sample into a compact audio or video signature, sometimes called a fingerprint. The signature is intended to describe patterns rather than serve as a viewable recording. A regional Samsung Viewing Information Services notice, effective in 2020, described a unique video signature generated from TV frames when the service was enabled.
- Matching: The signature is compared with a catalog or server-side data to identify a channel, program, commercial or other content. If there is no corresponding entry, the result may be unknown.
- Association: Depending on the service and settings, an identified viewing event may be associated with device information, an account, household attributes or advertising identifiers.
- Use: The resulting information can be used for recommendations, audience or advertising measurement, interest-based advertising, or other purposes described in the television’s notice.
These steps explain why ACR can continue to operate while you use a cable box or an external streaming player: the TV can analyze the signal arriving at its display input. They do not establish that every model monitors every input, that raw footage is uploaded, or that recognition is continuous in every operating mode.
Which sources can ACR cover?
Consumer Reports has described ACR coverage that includes over-the-air broadcasts, cable, streaming services and Blu-ray. In a 2017 enforcement case, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the New Jersey Attorney General said the televisions at issue collected viewing information from cable, broadband, set-top boxes, DVDs, over-the-air broadcasts and streaming devices. That case concerns a particular manufacturer and period; it is not proof that all current televisions treat every source identically.

Why manufacturers and partners use viewing information
Recommendations and discovery
A television can use recognized programs to make its home screen or guide more relevant. It may infer genres or viewing patterns and use them to suggest shows. Disabling ACR can therefore make recommendations less personalized, even when the apps themselves still function.

Advertising and measurement
The same viewing signal can support advertising decisions or measurement of audiences. Consumer Reports identifies recommendations and ad targeting as common purposes discussed for ACR. A historical FTC record concerning VIZIO described allegations that viewing data was combined with demographic attributes and sold to third parties, including for advertising across devices. Those allegations and the resulting settlement are a specific enforcement record, not a finding that every television maker sells viewing histories in the same way.
Different purposes can share one signal
A single recognized title or channel can be useful for a recommendation engine and for an advertising or measurement system. Read the privacy notice for the purposes, recipients and identifiers listed for your model rather than assuming that turning off an advertising setting also disables all viewing recognition.
What information might be generated?
The technical event may be a signature, a matched title or channel, a timestamp, and information about the television or account. Notices can also describe device identifiers, IP address, approximate location, demographic segments or advertising IDs. The exact fields, retention period, recipients and processing location are model- and region-specific.
Do not infer from the word “signature” that a television stores a complete recording. Conversely, do not assume a signature is harmless: a repeated series of matches can reveal a household’s viewing habits when linked to a device or account. The privacy notice should explain whether data is used internally, shared with service providers, used for measurement, or used for interest-based advertising.

How to find and disable ACR on your TV
Menu names change with model year, country, language and software version, so there is no reliable universal click path. Use this process to locate the current control on your set.
- Identify the exact television: Record the brand, full model number, model year if shown, country or region and software version. Two televisions with the same brand can expose different controls.
- Open privacy-related settings: Start in Settings, then look for Privacy, Terms, Data, or a similarly named section. On some platforms the control appears during initial setup or under General, Support or System.
- Search for the viewing control: Labels may include “viewing information,” “viewing data,” “automatic content recognition,” “interest-based advertising,” or the manufacturer’s named viewing-information service.
- Read the disclosure before changing it: Note what inputs are covered, what identifiers are used, who receives the information, and which features depend on the setting. Save a copy or photograph of the text if the television provides only a short on-screen summary.
- Turn off the relevant switch: Select the opt-out or disable option, accept the confirmation, and complete any separate advertising-personalization choice if one is offered.
- Check connected accounts and apps: ACR is only one data path. Streaming apps, voice assistants, account services and advertising settings may have their own controls and notices.
- Recheck after major updates or a reset: Firmware updates, factory resets and a change of region can restore defaults or move the control. Verify the setting again rather than relying on an old menu guide.
Current platform guidance from Consumer Reports documents different controls across major smart-TV systems. Use that kind of guide only as a starting point, then confirm the labels in the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s current help page for your exact model.
What changes when ACR is turned off?
- Viewing matching is reduced: The television should stop, or substantially limit, the ACR activity covered by that switch.
- Recommendations may be less tailored: A home screen or guide may have less information about what you watch.
- Advertising personalization may change: Ads can become less targeted, but disabling ACR does not necessarily disable every advertising or analytics mechanism.
- Other collection can continue: App usage, diagnostics, account data, voice interactions and network information may be governed by separate settings.
- Core TV functions usually remain: The opt-out is intended to change data use, not to disconnect the tuner or HDMI inputs, but the exact feature trade-off is model-specific.
An ACR opt-out is therefore a meaningful privacy reduction, not a promise that the television becomes unobservable. If a notice says a recommendation or personalization feature will stop working, treat that as the stated trade-off for that model.

In 2017, the FTC and the New Jersey Attorney General announced a settlement with VIZIO. The agencies said the company had collected viewing histories from 11 million televisions. They said the data was used with demographic information and sold to third parties, including for advertising across devices. VIZIO agreed to a $2.2 million settlement; the FTC release described $1.5 million allocated to the FTC and $1 million to New Jersey, with $300,000 suspended. Those components should not be added as though every dollar was paid in full.

The case is useful as a concrete example of why the source and purpose of viewing data matter. It is a historical, company-specific enforcement record. It does not establish the current behavior of every television manufacturer or the settings on a television purchased today.
How widespread was awareness?
At FTC PrivacyCon in 2018, Consumers Union policy counsel Katie McInnis reported that 43% of respondents in a Consumer Reports reader poll did not know smart TVs transmitted data to manufacturers and business partners. A reader poll is not a representative, current estimate of all television owners, but it illustrates the information gap: people may understand that a TV has apps without realizing that ACR can analyze external inputs.
McInnis also said, “All the models that we tested want to watch what you’re watching.” The statement referred to a five-TV test conducted at that time. It should not be read as a claim about every model sold today, especially after software, disclosures and regulations change.
How to compare two televisions’ ACR practices
Do not rank brands on the name alone. Compare the written notice and the controls for the specific models and regions.

Common misconceptions and practical checks
“I never use the smart-TV apps, so ACR cannot apply.”
Not necessarily. ACR can analyze an external signal, including cable, broadcast or a connected player, when the model supports that input.
“The TV is recording everything.”
The available evidence describes snippets, frames and signatures, not a universal practice of storing a continuous recording. The notice for your model is the authority on processing and retention.
“Turning off ACR makes the whole TV private.”
No. Separate app, diagnostic, account, voice and advertising data flows can remain. Review those settings independently.

Menus vary by model, year, region and software. Verify the model number and use current documentation before relying on a path.
“A router or accessory is required to opt out.”
The documented consumer action is a television privacy or viewing-data setting. Do not buy hardware on the assumption that it is necessary unless your specific manufacturer documents such a requirement.
