On Apple TV 4K, Apple Music offers High Quality (AAC), Lossless (ALAC) up to 24-bit/48 kHz in the Music settings guide, and Dolby Atmos for songs that support it and an output system that can decode it. Apple’s current lossless documentation also says Hi-Res Lossless is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), but the cited Apple documents do not state a precise maximum Hi-Res sample rate for those models.
Apple Music formats and quality options on Apple TV 4K
The names in the Apple Music app describe different aspects of playback. AAC and ALAC are codecs; bit depth and sample rate describe resolution; Dolby Atmos describes a spatial-audio presentation. They should not be treated as interchangeable settings.
| Apple Music option | What it means | What Apple’s Apple TV documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| High Quality (AAC) | Lossy AAC compression for streaming and downloads. | The Apple TV Music settings guide lists High Quality (AAC) as an audio-quality choice. Apple’s Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) specifications list AAC up to 320 kb/s, but that is a device-level specification rather than a promise that every Apple Music stream uses that bitrate. |
| Lossless (ALAC) | Apple Lossless Audio Codec, preserving the source audio data without lossy compression. | The Music settings guide describes Lossless (ALAC) up to 24-bit/48 kHz on Apple TV 4K. Availability still depends on the song, network and speakers. |
| Hi-Res Lossless | Higher-resolution lossless audio than the standard lossless setting. | Apple’s current lossless support article says Hi-Res Lossless is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). The documents cited here do not identify the exact maximum sample rate those models output, so do not assume the full catalogue range reaches Apple TV. |
| Dolby Atmos | Object-based spatial audio, available independently of whether the underlying track is AAC or lossless. | Atmos appears for supported songs when Apple TV 4K is connected to compatible HomePod speakers, a television, soundbar or AV receiver. HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. |
Apple’s Music settings guide is the right reference for choices exposed by the Apple Music app: Apple TV 4K Music settings. Apple’s separate lossless article adds the generation restriction for Hi-Res Lossless: Apple lossless audio support.
What “lossless” means on Apple TV
ALAC lossless keeps the encoded audio data intact, unlike AAC, which discards some information to reduce file size. A lossless label does not automatically mean high-resolution audio: a 16-bit/44.1 kHz file is lossless, as is a 24-bit/48 kHz file, but they have different resolutions.

- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
Apple says most of the Apple Music catalogue has been encoded in ALAC from 16-bit/44.1 kHz through 24-bit/192 kHz. That is a description of catalogue encodings, not a guaranteed Apple TV output ceiling. For Apple TV 4K, the Music settings guide explicitly describes Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz, while the newer support article says Hi-Res Lossless is limited to the third-generation model and later. Because the retrieved Apple pages do not give a precise Hi-Res ceiling for those models, a 24-bit/192 kHz output claim would go beyond the documentation.
Apple also cautions that “Support for lossless files depends on song availability, network conditions, and speaker capability.” This means selecting a lossless preference cannot make a song that has no lossless version play losslessly, and a congested connection or unsuitable audio path can affect playback.
Does Apple TV 4K support Dolby Atmos music?
Yes, when the song is an Atmos release and the complete output chain is compatible. Apple TV 4K automatically plays the highest-quality audio supported by both the available content and the home-entertainment system. Turning on an Atmos preference alone cannot create an Atmos mix for a stereo or non-Atmos song.
Compatible output arrangements
- One or two compatible HomePod speakers.
- A television that supports Dolby Atmos.
- A compatible soundbar used with a compatible television.
- A Dolby Atmos-capable AV receiver and connected speakers.
Apple specifically states that HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. Apple’s system requirements and behavior are detailed in its Dolby Atmos support article.
Atmos is a spatial format, not a replacement for AAC or ALAC. A track can be delivered in an Atmos presentation while the system negotiates the appropriate audio transport for the connected television, soundbar or receiver. The receiver, television and connection must all accept the signal for the intended result.

Apple Music settings versus Apple TV’s full audio-format list
Apple publishes a broader format list for the Apple TV 4K hardware. It includes:
| Category | Formats or limits listed by Apple |
|---|---|
| Compressed audio | HE-AAC; AAC up to 320 kb/s; protected AAC; MP3 up to 320 kb/s; MP3 VBR |
| Lossless or uncompressed audio | Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF and WAV |
| Surround and spatial formats | AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1), E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1) and Dolby Atmos |
This is a device-level compatibility list, not a list of selectable Apple Music streaming modes. In particular, Apple’s Apple Music settings guide presents AAC, ALAC lossless and Dolby audio choices; it does not present FLAC, AIFF or WAV as user-selectable Apple Music subscription formats. The hardware specifications are on Apple’s Apple TV 4K technical specifications page.

How to enable lossless audio on Apple TV 4K
Apple’s lossless instructions require a current tvOS installation and an HDMI connection to an AV receiver. Use this sequence:
- Update the Apple TV 4K to the latest tvOS available for the device.
- Connect Apple TV 4K to the AV receiver with HDMI. Use an audio path and speakers capable of reproducing the selected quality.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
- Select the lossless audio option.
- Play a song that has a lossless version in the catalogue and allow the receiver or audio system to complete its format negotiation.
Apple’s instructions are documented in its lossless audio support article. If the lossless choice is unavailable or playback does not behave as expected, check the song’s availability, network stability, tvOS update status and the capabilities of the connected speakers before changing other settings.

How to wire Apple TV 4K for Dolby Atmos
For a soundbar or AV receiver, Apple recommends placing Apple TV 4K before the display in the signal path:
- Connect Apple TV 4K directly to an HDMI input on the compatible soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output to the television.
- Set the receiver or soundbar and television to the appropriate HDMI input and enable their Atmos-capable audio modes if required by their manufacturers.
- Play an Apple Music song identified as Dolby Atmos and let Apple TV 4K select the highest-quality format supported by the song and the connected equipment.
Apple says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos does not work over ARC connections. If Apple TV is connected to the television first and audio is returned to the soundbar or receiver through ARC, that path may prevent the high-bandwidth Atmos signal. Apple’s wiring guidance is at Apple TV 4K and Dolby Atmos setup instructions.
The direct-HDMI recommendation applies to soundbar and receiver installations. HomePod-based setups use Apple’s supported wireless speaker configuration instead, but the HomePod mini limitation still applies.
Which Apple TV 4K generation do you need?
The standard lossless description in the Music settings guide is up to 24-bit/48 kHz. Apple’s current lossless support article separately identifies Hi-Res Lossless as available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). Therefore:
- An Apple TV 4K model can expose the standard AAC and ALAC choices described in the Music settings documentation, subject to the content and output system.
- For Apple’s generation-specific Hi-Res Lossless support, you need Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later).
- The cited Apple documents do not establish the exact Hi-Res sample-rate limit for those models. Do not use Apple Music’s catalogue maximum of 24-bit/192 kHz as an Apple TV output specification.
If you need to identify a model before troubleshooting, check the Apple TV’s model information in its settings and compare it with Apple’s device documentation. The generation qualification is important because “Apple TV” is a product family, while Apple’s Hi-Res statement names a specific Apple TV 4K generation.

What determines the quality you actually hear?
Song availability
Apple Music cannot provide lossless or Atmos when the particular recording is not offered in that version. A catalogue label is tied to the individual track, album and release, not simply to your subscription or device.
Network conditions
Lossless streams use more data than AAC streams. Apple includes network conditions among the factors that determine lossless support, so interruptions or a weak connection can affect playback even when the Apple TV and receiver are technically compatible.
Speaker, television and receiver capability
The output hardware must support the format and resolution being requested. A television or receiver that cannot decode Atmos will not produce an Atmos listening mode, and speakers that cannot reproduce the selected signal remain the practical limit of the system.
HDMI signal path
For high-bandwidth Atmos through a soundbar or receiver, the direct-HDMI arrangement recommended by Apple avoids the ARC limitation. Cable routing and the capabilities of every HDMI device matter, not just the Apple TV setting.

- No lossless option: update tvOS, then revisit Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality. Confirm that you are using a supported Apple TV 4K model and that the connected audio system can handle the signal.
- A track does not play losslessly: verify that the exact song has a lossless version. Apple’s setting is conditional on song availability, network conditions and speaker capability.
- Atmos is not appearing: check that the song has an Atmos mix, that the television, soundbar or receiver is Atmos-capable, and that the output path is configured as Apple recommends.
- Atmos works on some equipment but not through the television: connect Apple TV 4K directly to the compatible soundbar or receiver by HDMI instead of relying on ARC, which Apple says cannot carry Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos.
- You expected FLAC, WAV or AIFF as Apple Music choices: those names come from Apple’s hardware format list. They are not listed as selectable Apple Music streaming settings in the Music app guide.
Quick decision guide
| Your goal | Use this information |
|---|---|
| Smallest practical Apple Music stream | Choose High Quality (AAC). |
| Lossless stereo playback | Choose Lossless (ALAC), with the guide’s stated limit of up to 24-bit/48 kHz and a compatible HDMI/audio system. |
| Higher-resolution lossless on Apple TV | Use Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later); Apple confirms availability but does not specify the exact maximum Hi-Res sample rate in the cited documents. |
| Immersive music | Play an Atmos-supported song through compatible HomePod speakers, television, soundbar or AV receiver; use direct HDMI for a soundbar or receiver. |
| Playing a file in another app | Consult the hardware format list separately; FLAC, AIFF and WAV support does not mean those are Apple Music menu options. |
The practical answer
For Apple Music itself, think in three lanes: AAC for High Quality, ALAC for lossless audio, and Dolby Atmos for supported spatial mixes. The Apple TV 4K Music settings guide specifies ALAC lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz, while Apple’s newer support article limits Hi-Res Lossless to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later) without publishing a precise ceiling for those models. Your song, network, speakers and HDMI path determine which of those formats can actually be delivered.
