Atlantic weather reaches Greenland through shifting storm tracks, blocking highs, cyclones, and occasional atmospheric rivers. Those patterns steer warm or cold air and moisture toward different coasts and elevations, so the same kind of Atlantic disturbance can bring rain at low coastal levels, snow on the ice sheet, or both. Snowfall can temporarily protect the surface by increasing reflectivity, but Greenland’s total ice-sheet mass balance also depends on surface melt and ice discharge.
Why one “warm storm equals rain” rule fails
Greenland’s precipitation type is set by the temperature profile from cloud to ground, not simply by whether a storm feels warm at sea level. A moist air mass can rise along a steep coastal slope and cool enough for snow before reaching the ice sheet. In another situation, warm air can persist through the lowest layers and produce rain, while nearby higher terrain receives snow. Cloud phase, elevation, wind direction, and season all matter.
Atlantic circulation determines which air mass arrives and where it rises. A blocking high can stall the usual westerly storm track and redirect moisture for days. A cyclone can carry a narrow warm conveyor belt toward one coast while colder air remains over another. An atmospheric river can deliver an unusually concentrated pulse of water vapor; that pulse may fall as heavy rain, heavy snow, or a mixture at different elevations.

- Surface mass change: snowfall adds mass, while melt and runoff remove it.
- Total mass balance: surface change plus ice discharge through outlet glaciers and marine termini.
A snowy month can reduce melt by brightening the surface and still occur in a year when Greenland loses mass overall. Conversely, a year with frequent rain does not translate one-for-one into ice loss because some rain can refreeze, and discharge can dominate the annual result.
How Atlantic circulation sends moisture to Greenland
Euro-Atlantic blocking and a rerouted storm track
Blocking is a persistent high-pressure arrangement that disrupts the normal west-to-east flow across the North Atlantic. Instead of letting storms pass quickly, the block can divert them around its edges and hold a particular wind direction over Greenland. The 2022 study by Pettersen, Henderson, Mattingly, Bennartz, and Breeden found that the vast majority of central Greenland snowfall events in its June–August and September–November records coincided with Euro-Atlantic blocking.
The study identified different pathways in the two seasons. During June–August, a persistent blocking anticyclone over southern Greenland slowly advected warm, moist air into western and southern Greenland. Temperature and water-vapor anomalies intensified over the central ice sheet, while the North Atlantic storm track shifted southward. In this setup, moisture transport and uplift over the interior favored snowfall even though the incoming air was anomalously warm compared with the local background.
During September–November, snowfall in the study was largely associated with ice-phase clouds and blocking over the Nordic Seas, together with blocked flow over northern Europe. The blocking anticyclone deflected the westerly storm track poleward and enabled rapid transport of warm, moist air up Greenland’s steep southeastern edge. These are findings for the seasons, circulation patterns, and central-Greenland area analyzed; they are not a rule that every blocked storm produces snow everywhere on the island.

Cyclones and ordinary frontal systems
Most intense precipitation in Greenland and the eastern Canadian Arctic is associated with cyclones in the modeling study discussed below. A cyclone’s fronts separate air masses, so precipitation type can change quickly along its path. Warm-sector rain may occur near a low-elevation coast, while ascent over the ice-sheet slope cools the same moisture into snow. Behind the cold front, snow can replace rain as colder air arrives.
Atmospheric rivers
An atmospheric river is a long, narrow corridor of unusually strong water-vapor transport. NOAA’s atmospheric-river explainer notes that these systems can produce heavy rain and can also add to snowpack; the label does not mean “rain only.” Their effect in Greenland depends on the air temperature profile and where the moisture plume intersects the terrain.
What atmospheric rivers do at Summit Station
Greenland-specific measurements show why atmospheric rivers deserve separate treatment from ordinary storm statistics. Wedum and co-authors analyzed a 12-year Summit Station record covering 2010–2022 and identified 41 atmospheric-river events. At Summit, the events were infrequent but snow-rich:
| Measure | Atmospheric-river result at Summit | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Share of all observed times | 0.97% | They were rare in the 2010–2022 record. |
| Share of snowing times | 2.68% | They occurred during a small fraction of periods when it was snowing. |
| Share of total snowfall | 5.8% | Their snowfall contribution was disproportionate to their frequency. |
| Snowfall rate | 80% higher than general snowing conditions | Snow fell more intensely during events. |
| Daily snowfall accumulation | About twice the general snowing value | Event days accumulated roughly double the snow. |
| Atmospheric temperature | More than 7°C warmer up to 350 hPa | The warming extended high into the atmosphere during events. |
| Specific humidity | 66% higher | The event air carried substantially more water vapor. |
These percentages apply only to Summit Station and the study’s event-identification methods. They should not be multiplied across the entire ice sheet. Summit is high and inland, so an atmospheric river that produces snow there may bring rain at a lower coastal elevation or mixed precipitation along the route inland.

The combination of warmth and snowfall is physically plausible: a warm, moist plume can increase the amount of available water while lifting over high terrain. As the air rises, it expands and cools; ice-phase clouds can then produce snow even while the broader atmospheric column is warmer than usual.
When Greenland gets rain and when it gets snow
Rain
Rain is more likely when temperatures remain above freezing through the cloud layer and the near-surface air. It is common in warmer coastal sectors and at lower elevations, especially during summer or when a cyclone’s warm sector reaches Greenland. Rain can run off immediately, soak snow and firn, or refreeze within the ice sheet. Its effect therefore depends on intensity, timing, surface conditions, and whether subsequent cold weather traps the water.
Snow
Snow forms when ice crystals or snowflakes survive the descent without melting completely. Cold-season storms often produce snow, but snowfall is not restricted to winter. The NOAA Arctic Report Card 2025 noted several notable June snowfall events at inland stations, and summertime snow can matter because a fresh, bright surface reflects more sunlight than older, darker snow or exposed ice.

A single weather system can generate rain, wet snow, and dry snow across a short horizontal distance. The freezing level may rise and fall as the storm evolves, while the ice sheet’s steep margins force air upward. Satellite products and station observations therefore classify precipitation across a network rather than treating Greenland as one weather point.

What the 2025 observations show
NOAA’s 2025 Greenland Ice Sheet assessment combined observations from 11 coastal and 10 inland ice-sheet stations for precipitation, with temperature comparisons from 34 weather stations. Relative to the 1991–2020 baseline, the pattern was seasonally uneven:
| 2025 mass-balance season | Observed precipitation pattern |
|---|---|
| Autumn | Slightly below average overall. |
| Winter | Significantly above average at coastal stations, especially in the northeast; near average inland. |
| Spring | Close to average. |
| Summer | Above average, with notable June snowfall at several inland stations. |
Coastal precipitation was generally above the 1991–2020 average during the 2025 mass-balance year, despite the autumn shortfall. Temperatures at the 34 stations were generally above that baseline, particularly in autumn, winter, and spring; summer temperatures were close to average. NOAA reported that summer snow accumulation likely raised albedo, reflecting more sunlight and limiting the area of surface melt.
Those observations do not support either extreme slogan: “all rain causes immediate ice loss” or “more snow cancels warming.” Snow can delay or reduce melt, while rain can add energy and water to the surface, but the annual outcome includes the timing of melt and the movement of ice to the ocean.

For 2025, the NOAA Arctic Report Card estimated Greenland Ice Sheet mass balance at −129 ± 50 gigatonnes. That loss was smaller than the −219 ± 16 gigatonnes per year average for 2003–2024, but it remained a net loss and continued the long-term downward trend.

NOAA attributed the comparatively smaller 2025 loss to above-average snowfall and below-average melt, even though ice discharge was above average. This is why snowfall totals cannot be used as a stand-alone mass-balance score. Surface accumulation is one term; meltwater runoff and iceberg-producing discharge are other terms.
Discharge estimates also carry methodological limits. The 2025 report derived them from Sentinel-1 velocity, estimated thickness and density, and a plug-flow assumption. Measurement gates sit upstream of glacier termini, so the estimates omit frontal advance or retreat and melting between the gates and the termini. A reported annual balance is therefore an estimate assembled from several observing systems, not a direct weighing of every kilogram of ice.
NOAA also reported that its surface-melt duration and extent product used SSMIS passive-microwave data. The instrument was decommissioned on 24 September 2025, ending that particular product capability; this does not mean melt monitoring stopped by every method.
Observed conditions versus future projections
Measurements describe what happened in a specific year or record. Projections describe how a model responds under a specified emissions scenario and should not be read as a forecast for a particular storm or year.
Loeb and co-authors’ 2024 study used variable-resolution Community Earth System Model simulations for 1980–1999 and 2080–2099 under SSP5-8.5. It projected an overall increase in extreme precipitation across much of Greenland and the eastern Canadian Arctic, with the most intense daily rates becoming especially frequent in northern areas. The study projected decreases in southeastern Greenland, demonstrating that “more extreme precipitation” is not spatially uniform.
The same analysis suggested that atmospheric rivers could become more important as they become more frequent in the domain, particularly in summer. Even so, most extreme precipitation in the modeled region was associated with cyclones. The result is conditional on SSP5-8.5 and the model design; it is not evidence that every future Greenland storm will be an atmospheric river or that every location will get wetter.
A practical way to interpret an Atlantic storm
- Identify the circulation pattern. Ask whether a cyclone, a blocked flow, or an atmospheric river is steering the moisture. Blocking changes the storm-track route; atmospheric rivers describe concentrated vapor transport; cyclones organize fronts and uplift.
- Locate the moisture pathway. Western, southern, southeastern, northeastern, and interior Greenland can experience different air masses in the same event. A plume arriving up the southeastern escarpment is not equivalent to one crossing a low coastal sector.
- Check the vertical temperature profile. Surface temperature alone cannot determine precipitation type. Look for the freezing level, warm layers aloft, and whether uplift will cool the air before it reaches the surface.
- Separate rain or snow from ice-sheet response. Snowfall adds accumulation and can brighten the surface; rain may run off or refreeze. Neither tells you the annual balance without melt and discharge.
- Match the time scale to the claim. A Summit event statistic, a 2025 annual estimate, and an 2080–2099 scenario projection answer different questions and should not be mixed.
Why the same Atlantic pattern can have opposite effects
| Pattern or setting | Likely precipitation and atmospheric behavior | Potential ice-sheet implication |
|---|---|---|
| Summer blocking south of Greenland | Warm, moist advection from the west and south; uplift can produce central snowfall. | Snow may raise albedo and limit melt, even with warm air aloft. |
| Autumn blocking over the Nordic Seas | Poleward-deflected westerlies and rapid moisture transport up the southeastern edge; ice-phase clouds were prominent in the 2022 study. | Snowfall contribution depends on elevation and the evolving freezing level. |
| Atmospheric river at Summit | Rare, very moist events with higher snowfall rates and warmer atmospheric columns. | Can add a disproportionate share of interior snowfall; Summit statistics are not island-wide. |
| Cyclone warm sector at low elevation | Rain or wet snow near the coast, with possible transition to snow upslope or behind a cold front. | Rain may increase runoff or refreezing; snowfall inland may offset part of surface loss. |
| Future extreme-precipitation scenario | Modeled increases across much of the region but decreases in southeastern Greenland under SSP5-8.5. | Regional effects differ; a scenario projection is not an observed annual balance. |
What to watch in a Greenland precipitation report
- Baseline: Check whether “above average” uses 1991–2020 or another reference period.
- Coverage: Determine whether the number comes from coastal stations, inland stations, Summit, satellites, or a model grid.
- Units and uncertainty: Gigatonnes describe mass balance, not precipitation depth; include the stated uncertainty, such as ±50 Gt for the 2025 estimate.
- Season: A summer snowfall event can affect albedo immediately, while winter accumulation may be stored until the melt season.
- Component: Ask whether the report is discussing snowfall, melt, runoff, or discharge. A total balance combines them.
- Scenario: For projections, record the emissions pathway, comparison periods, and region before interpreting the direction of change.
NOAA summarizes the value of continuous observation this way: “Sustained, routine measurement of the mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet is crucial for understanding current changes and projecting future changes, which support effective local to global planning and adaptation.” That principle matters because Atlantic weather is episodic, while ice-sheet mass balance integrates thousands of such events with melt and discharge over an entire year.
