For a spacewalk, an astronaut normally wears a liquid-cooling and ventilation garment (LCVG) directly against the body, beneath the suit’s pressurized layers. Water flowing through small tubes removes body heat while ventilation helps move air and sweat. A pressure garment then holds the breathing atmosphere and provides restraint and protection. Communications may come from a separate cap under the helmet or from audio hardware built into the helmet, depending on the suit.
The layer closest to the body: the liquid-cooling and ventilation garment
The LCVG is specialized clothing, not a casual “cooling shirt” that works by itself. It is a close-fitting, stretchy garment threaded with water tubes. Those tubes run near the astronaut’s skin so circulating water can carry heat away while the astronaut works in a suit that cannot use ordinary room-air cooling.
NASA spacesuit engineer Amy Ross summarized the principle in the Suiting up for Space podcast: “We don’t have air conditioning in the suit, we use cool water flowing through tubes to help cool you down.” The statement describes the water-based approach; the exact plumbing and hardware depend on the suit and mission.

In the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), chilled water is supplied by the backpack. The backpack contains the water, a chiller and a pump. The pump sends water through the LCVG’s tubing, where it absorbs heat from the astronaut, and the system routes the warmed water back for cooling. This is a closed, suit-specific life-support loop rather than a garment that connects to a household water source.

Why ventilation is built into the same garment
Cooling water is only part of the problem. An astronaut’s body also produces moisture, and a sealed suit needs controlled airflow. Ventilation features help draw sweat away from the skin and circulate air through the clothing and suit. The LCVG therefore supports thermal comfort and moisture management at the same time.
The garment must remain close to the body so the tubes stay positioned correctly. It also has to allow movement while other layers restrict motion through joints and pressurized fabric. Its fit, tubing layout and connectors are designed as part of the complete suit, so a generic athletic cooling garment cannot substitute for it.
What the pressure garment adds
The pressure garment performs a different job from the LCVG. It encloses the astronaut and retains the pressurized breathing environment needed when the surrounding environment is a vacuum or otherwise unsuitable for human life. It also supplies structural restraint, protects the occupant from the operating environment and transfers loads through the suit’s joints and limbs.
A historical example of pressure-suit construction
NASA’s Apollo-era technical description identifies three important elements in the torso-and-limb pressure suit: an inner comfort lining, a gas-retention bladder and a restraint layer. The comfort lining separates the body from the pressure components. The bladder holds the gas. The restraint layer limits the bladder’s expansion and helps the suit maintain a usable shape when pressurized.

Those Apollo components are a historical design example, not a universal diagram for every current suit. Modern suits can use different materials, joint designs, restraint methods and interfaces. The reliable generalization is that a pressure suit has to retain the atmosphere and control the forces created by internal pressure while allowing the astronaut to work.
Why the pressure layer feels unlike ordinary clothing
Pressurization tends to make a flexible suit want to expand, which can make bending fingers, elbows, knees and hips difficult. Restraint layers, shaped joints and bearings are used to manage that behavior. The astronaut’s clothing is consequently engineered as a mechanical system: the cooling garment handles heat and moisture, while the pressure envelope and its restraints preserve pressure and mobility.
How communications fit under or inside the helmet
Voice communication is another suit-dependent feature. In a traditional configuration, the astronaut wears a communications carrier cap under the helmet. NASA describes the historical cap, often called the “Snoopy cap,” as having earphones and microphones connected to the suit radio. The cap keeps the audio hardware positioned near the ears and mouth while the helmet remains sealed.

A carrier cap is useful when the helmet itself is primarily a transparent pressure shell with separate audio equipment. The cap can be donned with the other soft garments and connected to the suit’s radio system. It is not a consumer headset: its connectors, microphone placement and electrical interfaces are selected for the specific pressure suit and communications unit.

Integrated helmet audio
NASA also describes an exploration-suit audio system with speakers and embedded, voice-activated microphones. In that design, the helmet contains the audio components, eliminating the need for a separate communications cap. This is why an answer that says every astronaut always wears a Snoopy cap is too broad. The cap is a configuration choice, not a permanent rule.
Different missions use different under-suit arrangements
“Spacesuit” can mean an orbital-EVA suit, a launch-and-landing suit or a vehicle pressure suit. These garments operate in different settings and should not be treated as interchangeable. The cooling-water source, body coverage, pressure construction and communications arrangement can all change.
| Suit or setting | Cooling garment and coverage | Cooling-water source | Pressure or outer-layer information | Communications information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMU used for a spacewalk | Close-fitting LCVG with water tubes near the skin; ventilation helps manage sweat and airflow. | Backpack containing water, chiller and pump. | The pressure garment encloses the astronaut and retains the suit atmosphere; the exact current layer construction varies by design. | May use a communications cap; newer exploration designs can integrate audio into the helmet. |
| Orion launch-and-entry suit | NASA describes a cooling garment covering the chest. | Water is supplied by the spacecraft. | Configured for vehicle operations rather than an open-ended EVA. | Not stated in the cited Orion description; do not assume an EMU-style cap. |
| Space Shuttle launch-and-landing suit | Lightweight clothing beneath a thermal-underwear-like cooling layer. | Not stated in the cited description. | Orange outer suit used for launch and landing. | Not stated in the cited description. |
| Apollo-era pressure-suit example | Exact cooling arrangement is not established by the cited construction summary. | Not stated. | Inner comfort lining, gas-retention bladder and restraint layer are identified as historical components. | Historical communications arrangements varied; the cited construction summary does not define one universal setup. |
The table shows why “what is worn under a spacesuit” has no single inventory for every astronaut. The mission determines whether the garment is connected to a backpack, a spacecraft, or another life-support system, and whether communications sit in a cap or helmet.

On an EMU spacewalk, the clothing is one part of a larger life-support chain. The backpack and suit systems support oxygen supply and circulation, carbon-dioxide removal, electrical power, radio communications and cooling-water circulation. The LCVG cannot cool an astronaut unless the backpack’s pump and chiller operate, and the pressure garment cannot keep the astronaut alive unless the suit’s atmosphere and life-support controls are functioning.

- Heat is generated. Exercise, tool use and simply remaining alive produce body heat inside the insulated suit.
- The LCVG collects heat. Water moving through tubes close to the skin absorbs heat from the astronaut.
- The backpack processes the water. A pump circulates it and a chiller removes the collected heat before the water returns to the garment.
- Ventilation manages moisture and air. Air movement helps carry sweat away and supports circulation through the clothing system.
- The pressure envelope preserves the atmosphere. The pressure garment retains the breathing environment while restraint elements control its shape and loads.
- The radio carries voice. A carrier cap or integrated helmet audio connects the astronaut to the suit’s communications electronics.
Thinking of the suit as connected equipment explains why an astronaut cannot simply wear a cooling layer and then step outside. The clothing, pressure envelope, backpack, helmet and radio are designed to function together.
What an astronaut generally wears while suiting up
Exact donning procedures are controlled by the suit program, but the functional order is consistent: body-contact clothing first, pressure and restraint components next, then the external suit and life-support connections.
- Put on the close-fitting base and cooling garment. The LCVG is positioned so its tubing lies near the skin and its ventilation features align with the suit’s airflow path.
- Connect garment interfaces. Water and ventilation connections are routed to the suit hardware. The connectors are mission equipment, not ordinary clothing fasteners.
- Add the pressure-garment components. The torso and limb sections are fitted so the pressure envelope, comfort surfaces and restraint system work together.
- Install communications equipment. If the suit uses a carrier cap, the cap is fitted and connected to the radio. If the helmet has integrated audio, the embedded speakers and microphones are checked instead.
- Close and test the suit. Technicians verify pressure retention, airflow, water circulation, radio operation and mobility before the astronaut enters the operational environment.
- Connect the life-support unit. For an EMU, the backpack supplies the cooling and life-support functions. For a vehicle suit such as Orion’s, cooling connections can come from the spacecraft.
The sequence is deliberately system-oriented. A garment can fit correctly yet fail its mission if a water connector, ventilation path, pressure seal or microphone interface is not compatible with the rest of the suit.

Common misconceptions about under-suit clothing
“Astronauts wear a normal T-shirt under the suit.”
They may wear soft comfort clothing as part of a suit’s interior, but the key garment for an EVA is the engineered LCVG. It contains tubing and ventilation features and is connected to life-support hardware. Calling it ordinary underwear hides the equipment that actually controls heat and moisture.

“The suit has air conditioning like a room.”
Cooling is primarily achieved by circulating chilled water through the garment. The backpack’s chiller and pump, together with ventilation, perform the thermal-control work. The system is compact, wearable and integrated with the suit rather than blowing cooled room air around an open cabin.
“Every astronaut wears the same communications cap.”
The separate cap is one solution. An exploration-suit design described by NASA puts speakers and voice-activated microphones in the helmet, so no cap is required for that configuration.
“An EVA suit and a launch suit have the same layers.”
They do not. An EVA suit supports work outside a spacecraft and uses a backpack-based life-support arrangement. A launch-and-landing suit is designed for vehicle operations. NASA’s Shuttle example places lightweight clothing under a thermal-underwear-like layer and an orange outer suit, while Orion’s cooling garment is described as a chest-covering layer supplied by the spacecraft.
How to identify the correct answer for a named mission
For a specific astronaut, spacecraft or mission, first identify the suit and operating phase. Ask four questions:
- Is the suit for an EVA, launch, entry or another vehicle operation?
- Which body areas does the cooling garment cover?
- Does cooling water come from a backpack or the vehicle?
- Does the helmet use integrated audio, or is a separate communications cap worn?
Official operator documentation for that mission should answer those questions. NASA’s general EMU descriptions explain the architecture, but they do not establish the exact current undergarment and communications configuration for every crewed suit. A mission-specific answer should therefore name the suit and date its configuration rather than presenting one historical arrangement as universal.
Bottom line
Under an EVA spacesuit, the most important garment is the LCVG: close-fitting clothing with water tubes and ventilation that connects to the suit’s cooling system. Above it, pressure and restraint layers retain the breathing atmosphere and support movement. Communications come either from a cap under the helmet or from audio components integrated into the helmet. Vehicle suits such as Shuttle launch-and-landing suits and Orion suits use different arrangements, so the mission and suit model always matter.
