Astronauts on a typical six-month International Space Station (ISS) mission spend their time running experiments, operating and repairing the station, exercising for roughly two hours each day, monitoring their health, handling cargo, training for emergencies and possible spacewalks, and communicating with people on Earth. The work is planned with Mission Control and changes as experiments, visiting spacecraft, maintenance requirements and mission priorities change. Six months is a typical duration, not a guaranteed schedule.

What a six-month ISS mission actually involves

The ISS is both an orbital laboratory and a spacecraft that must be continuously operated. Crew members are therefore researchers, technicians, custodians, test subjects, communicators and emergency responders. NASA’s astronaut FAQ identifies four central parts of the job: operating science experiments, keeping the station in good condition, exercising and, when assigned, performing spacewalks.

A crew’s workday is not an identical sequence repeated for six months. NASA’s operations guidance describes twice-daily planning conferences with Mission Control, while the day-to-day plan is adjusted around research deadlines, visiting vehicles, maintenance findings and external work. A 2025 Expedition 73 report, for example, describes exercise, cargo handling, research, station upkeep and an amateur-radio contact with students. Reports from Expedition 75 in 2026 describe eye examinations, virtual-reality research, laboratory maintenance, bioprinting and spacewalk preparation. Those reports illustrate the range of work rather than defining a universal timetable.

How the mission is scheduled

Daily planning with Mission Control

Ground teams prepare a detailed timeline and coordinate it with the crew. Planning conferences let astronauts and controllers review the day’s priorities, resolve conflicts between experiments and maintenance, and revise the plan when a system needs attention. A vehicle docking, undocking or cargo transfer can reorganize several days of work.

Why two crews can have different days

  • Research assignments: Different crews support different investigations and may need to configure different racks, samples or sensors.
  • Vehicle traffic: Arriving and departing spacecraft create work in berthing, cargo transfer, communications and safety procedures.
  • Maintenance: A failed component, inspection finding or scheduled replacement can take precedence over planned research.
  • External tasks: A planned extravehicular activity (EVA), commonly called a spacewalk, adds days of preparation and post-EVA work.
  • Mission priorities: The operations team can reorder tasks to protect crew safety, station capability or a time-sensitive experiment.

NASA has published historical descriptions of half-day Saturday housecleaning and Sunday personal time. Those descriptions are useful context, but they should not be treated as a guaranteed current rest-day rule for every expedition.

Science in orbit

Running and tending experiments

Much of the crew’s research work is practical rather than observational. Astronauts install samples, configure hardware, start procedures, replace components, collect measurements and preserve material for return to Earth. They may also monitor an experiment between scheduled operations and report anomalies to investigators.

Why microgravity matters

In orbit, experiments can examine processes without the same buoyancy, sedimentation or convection found on Earth. The station’s laboratories support investigations in areas such as human health, biology, materials and technology demonstrations. The crew’s role is to make the experiment run reliably in the station environment and to document what happened, including deviations from the plan.

Examples from recent expeditions

NASA’s 2026 Expedition 75 reporting includes virtual-reality research and bioprinting alongside laboratory maintenance. An eye examination is another example of research and health work overlapping: crew health measurements can support both medical monitoring and long-duration-flight studies. These activities may involve dedicated equipment, repeated measurements and carefully timed sample handling.

Keeping the station operating

Maintenance and inspections

The ISS contains life-support, power, thermal-control, communications, computing and laboratory systems that require routine attention. Astronauts inspect equipment, clean work areas, replace filters or other scheduled items, configure research facilities and troubleshoot problems under ground-team guidance. Some jobs are preventive; others respond to a warning or a change in system performance.

Cleaning is operational work

Housekeeping is not separate from station safety. Dust and debris can interfere with equipment, obstruct ventilation or complicate work in confined modules. Crew members clean surfaces, organize shared workspaces and keep tools and supplies secured so that objects do not float into fans, vents or experiment hardware.

Water and supplies

Logistics includes unpacking deliveries, cataloguing supplies, stowing cargo and preparing items for return or disposal. NASA says the station’s Water Recovery System reduces crew dependence on water delivered by cargo spacecraft by 65 percent. That recycling capability does not eliminate resupply: food, replacement parts, experiment materials and other consumables still arrive on visiting vehicles, and the crew must manage them carefully.

Exercise: about two hours every day

Microgravity reduces the mechanical loading that normally helps maintain muscle and bone. To counter those changes, astronauts exercise approximately two hours per day on long-duration missions. NASA identifies three major station exercise systems:

T2 treadmill Supports treadmill exercise in microgravity with station-specific restraint and vibration-control features.
Cycle Ergometer with Vibration Isolation and Stabilization (CEVIS) Provides cycling exercise while limiting vibration transmitted to the station.

These are specialized spacecraft systems, not ordinary consumer fitness products. Physicians and other specialists monitor physical and behavioral health during the mission and can adjust an astronaut’s exercise plan. Exercise therefore appears on the timeline as a required operational activity, not optional leisure.

Health monitoring and medical work

Long-duration crews provide health-related data throughout the expedition. Monitoring can include medical examinations, eye assessments, exercise response and behavioral-health information. NASA’s Expedition 75 reports describe eye exams as part of the crew’s work. The purpose is both immediate care and understanding how the body responds to months in microgravity.

Astronauts also follow procedures for hygiene, sleep and personal health within the station’s constraints. Ground specialists review results and help determine whether a change in exercise, workload or medical procedure is needed. This continuous monitoring is important because a crew must remain capable of operating the station and responding to emergencies far from a hospital.

Training never stops after launch

Training continues in orbit because the crew may need to respond to equipment failures, fire, pressure loss or other emergencies. Astronauts review procedures, practice operations with Mission Control and prepare for tasks that may occur later in the expedition. Training can be specific to a new experiment, a visiting spacecraft or an external repair.

Preparation for an EVA is especially demanding. Crew members review the task sequence, tools, communications, suit procedures and contingency plans with ground teams. NASA’s 2026 mission reporting shows spacewalk preparation taking place alongside research and laboratory upkeep, not replacing all other work.

Spacewalks: occasional, planned external work

A spacewalk, or EVA, takes place outside the station in a spacesuit. EVAs support station construction, maintenance and upgrades, such as installing or replacing external hardware. They are scheduled for a specific objective and require substantial preparation, equipment checks, medical planning and coordination with Mission Control.

Because an EVA is a specialized operation, it is not a normal daily activity and not guaranteed on every six-month mission. A crew may spend considerable time preparing for an EVA that is later changed or deferred because of vehicle schedules, hardware status, weather affecting launch or other operational constraints.

Speaking with Earth

Communications are part of the mission’s work. Astronauts conduct scheduled conferences with controllers, investigators, educators and public-affairs teams. An amateur-radio contact with students described in the Expedition 73 report shows how outreach can fit into a working expedition. These contacts share the mission’s results and help students understand science and engineering, but they occur within an already planned operations timeline.

How long is “six months”?

NASA states that a typical ISS mission lasts about six months, while noting that the duration can vary with visiting-spacecraft schedules, mission priorities and other factors. The number is therefore a planning norm, not a promise that every astronaut spends exactly 180 days in orbit. A delayed vehicle, an extended handover or a change in station operations can alter the exact time.

The station circles Earth about 16 times in 24 hours, according to NASA. That rapid orbital cycle creates repeated dawns and sunsets, but it does not turn the mission into a sightseeing schedule. Crew time remains organized around research, station operations, exercise, health, training, logistics and communications.

A practical way to picture an astronaut’s day

Instead of imagining one fixed timetable, picture a sequence of scheduled work blocks whose contents change:

  1. Planning and coordination: Review the timeline and any changes with Mission Control.
  2. Research operations: Run an experiment, configure hardware, collect data or handle samples.
  3. Station work: Perform inspections, cleaning, repairs, cargo stowage or laboratory setup.
  4. Exercise and health: Complete the prescribed workout and medical or behavioral-health checks.
  5. Training: Rehearse emergency, vehicle or EVA procedures when assigned.
  6. Communications: Conduct technical conferences, investigator meetings or educational outreach.
  7. Personal time: Use the remaining scheduled time for meals, hygiene, rest and private activities.

On a research-heavy day, the science block may dominate. During a cargo operation, logistics may take priority. Before an EVA, preparation and equipment checks can occupy much of the schedule. The common thread is not a fixed clock but a managed workload that keeps people, experiments and the station safe.

What astronauts are not doing every day

  • They are not performing spacewalks as a routine daily task.
  • They are not following one universal timetable shared by every expedition.
  • They are not relying on ordinary gym equipment; the exercise devices are specialized ISS hardware.
  • They are not spending the mission only on experiments; maintenance, cargo, health and training are essential parts of the job.
