AS9100 certification is independent, third-party certification that an aerospace organization’s quality-management system conforms to the IAQG 9100-series requirements. The 9100 series is built on ISO 9001, then adds controls for aviation, space and defense work. A certificate is credible only when an accredited certification body (CB) issued it under the IAQG 9104/1 certification scheme and the supplier’s record is current in the IAQG Online Aerospace Supplier Information System (OASIS).

For a buyer, “AS9100 certified” is not enough by itself. Verify the exact legal entity, facility, activities, applicable standard (9100, 9110 or 9120), certification body, scope, status and dates in OASIS. Certification demonstrates that the defined management system met the standard at audit and surveillance; it does not approve every product, guarantee defect-free deliveries or replace drawings, purchase-order clauses, special-process approvals, traceability and other customer requirements.

What AS9100 certification actually means

AS9100 is the aerospace quality-management-system (AQMS) standard in the IAQG 9100 series. It uses ISO 9001 as its foundation but applies additional aerospace expectations to organizations serving aviation, space and defense markets. The certificate belongs to the management system—not to a particular part number, aircraft program or shipment.

Certification is performed by an independent CB rather than by the supplier itself or by a customer. The CB audits the organization against the applicable 9100-series standard, confirms conformity within a defined scope and reports the audit through the IAQG scheme. The scheme is designed so that customers can recognize audits performed by competent, accredited bodies instead of repeating the same full system audit at every supplier.

“The IAQG Certification Scheme enables all organizations that purchase goods and services to recognize and accept the audits and certifications issued by accredited Certification Bodies (CBs) as part of their supply chain management processes.” — International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG)

The certificate therefore has boundaries. It identifies the legal organization, one or more sites, the products or services and the processes covered. A parent company’s certificate does not automatically cover a subsidiary, and a certificate for one plant does not cover work performed at another plant unless that site is included in the certified scope.

How the IAQG certification scheme works

The IAQG scheme uses the 9104/1 rules to make certification bodies and audits consistent across countries. A CB must already be accredited for ISO 9001 by an approved accreditation body, be assessed against 9104/1 criteria, demonstrate competence against ISO/IEC 17021-1, 9104/1 and 9101, and enter relevant audit information in OASIS. Those requirements are different from a consultant’s claim that it can help implement a quality system: a consultant may prepare an organization, but only an eligible CB can issue the certification.

IAQG describes OASIS as an online resource listing suppliers certified or registered under IAQG rules for the 9100-series aerospace quality requirements. OASIS is the primary verification point because it connects the certificate to the supplier identity, sites, certification body, audit history and current standing rather than relying on an undated PDF supplied by the vendor.

“Online Aerospace Supplier Information System® (OASIS) is an online resource containing a list of suppliers certified/registered under the IAQG rules to comply with the aerospace quality management system requirements (9100 series).” — IAQG OASIS

Which 9100-series standard should a supplier hold?

The correct standard follows the activity being certified. Do not treat every number in the series as interchangeable.

Standard Typical activity in scope Buyer’s verification question
9100 Manufacturing and other aviation, space or defense organizations operating an aerospace quality-management system Does this certificate cover the supplier’s actual production, design, assembly or other contracted aerospace activities?
9110 Maintenance organizations Is the work being purchased maintenance or repair, and is the maintenance site named in the record?
9120 Distributors and stockists Is the supplier distributing or stocking product rather than manufacturing it, and does the scope describe that activity?

A manufacturer will generally be assessed to 9100, while maintenance and distribution activities may require 9110 or 9120. Your contract, purchase order or customer flow-down can impose a more specific choice, so compare the supplier’s record with the activity you are outsourcing rather than selecting a standard from the certificate title alone.

Why ISO 9001 alone may not satisfy an aerospace requirement

ISO 9001 certification shows that a general quality-management system was audited against ISO 9001. It does not show that the organization was audited to the aerospace additions in the 9100 series. Aerospace buyers often need controls and objective evidence that are more specific to configuration, risk, counterfeit-part prevention, product safety, traceability, nonconformance, supplier control and regulated or special processes. The exact obligations still depend on the applicable 9100-series edition and the customer’s contract.

Consequently, an ISO 9001 certificate can be useful background evidence but may not meet an aerospace customer’s qualification clause. If the contract calls for an IAQG-recognized 9100-series certificate, ask the supplier for that certificate and verify it in OASIS. Do not substitute a general ISO 9001 registration because the logos or certificate layout look similar.

How to verify an aerospace supplier step by step

  1. Identify the exact legal entity and performing site

Write down the supplier’s legal name, street address, trading name, parent company and any subsidiary distinction. Record which facility will design, manufacture, inspect, store or ship your product. A certificate for a related company or a different plant is not evidence for the entity doing your work.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  2. Search the supplier in OASIS

Use the IAQG OASIS supplier search and search by the legal name or other identifying information shown on the supplier’s certificate. Open the organization record rather than relying on a search-result snippet. If you cannot find a matching record, pause qualification and ask the supplier to explain the discrepancy; an emailed certificate by itself is not a substitute for the scheme record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Confirm the applicable standard

Check whether the OASIS record and certificate identify 9100, 9110 or 9120. Match that standard to the work package. A distributor’s 9120 certificate does not demonstrate that it controls a manufacturing process you are outsourcing, and a maintenance certificate does not automatically cover production.

  4. Read the scope, sites and exclusions

Compare the certificate wording with your statement of work. Confirm the named site, departments or locations, product families, processes and service descriptions. Look for a scope narrow enough to exclude the operation you intend to use—for example, a certificate covering warehousing while the actual machining occurs at an uncertified facility. Treat a site or activity mismatch as a qualification gap, not as a minor paperwork issue.

  5. Check the certification body

Identify the CB printed on the certificate and in OASIS. Verify that it participates in the IAQG certification scheme and that its accreditation covers the relevant 9100-series standard and geography. The scheme requires CB competence under ISO/IEC 17021-1, 9104/1 and 9101, so a generic registrar claim without IAQG-scheme status is insufficient.

  6. Check status, validity and audit dates

Review the OASIS status, certificate validity, latest audit information and any suspension or withdrawal indicator. Status is time-sensitive: recheck close to supplier award and during ongoing surveillance. Keep a dated copy or internal record of what you verified, because a certificate that was valid at initial sourcing can later be suspended, withdrawn or allowed to expire.

    • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  7. Apply customer-specific requirements

Major customers can add conditions beyond the baseline standard. Boeing’s supplier quality FAQ says the CB must be accredited by ANAB or an international equivalent, the certificate must be to SAE AS 9104, and the supplier must be listed in OASIS and in good standing; see the Boeing supplier quality FAQ. Airbus supplier terms require an IAQG-accredited 9100-series certificate and state that only OASIS-registered certifications satisfy that requirement; see the Airbus supplier requirements. Read your own contract for additional customer, program, national or regulatory clauses.

  8. Request supporting evidence and reconcile it

Ask the supplier for the current certificate, scope statement, site list and relevant audit or corrective-action information. Compare every item with OASIS: legal name, address, standard, scope, CB and status. Resolve differences in writing before approval. A PDF can be out of date, altered or issued for a different site even when the supplier’s name appears familiar.

What to inspect in an OASIS record

Use the record as a set of linked checks rather than as a single “certified” label.

Record element What a buyer should match Warning sign
Organization identity Exact legal name and relationship to the contracting supplier Parent, subsidiary or trading name does not match the purchase contract
Site information Facility where the contracted work will be performed Only another city, plant or remote office is listed
Standard 9100, 9110 or 9120 appropriate to the activity The number does not fit the outsourced process
Scope Products, services and processes that include your work Scope is limited to storage, inspection or another activity outside your work package
Certification body IAQG-scheme CB with relevant accreditation Registrar cannot be matched to the scheme or geography
Status and dates Current standing, validity and recent audit information Suspension, withdrawal, expiry or stale information
Audit information Evidence that surveillance and certification activity is being recorded No record that supports the certificate presented

OASIS status is a qualification input, not a complete supplier evaluation. Continue to assess capacity, technical capability, financial resilience, delivery performance and the controls that your contract requires.

Certification-body and auditor credibility

There are two related but separate questions: whether the CB is accredited for the scheme, and whether the people conducting the audit are qualified under current IAQG rules. The CB’s accreditation supports the validity of the certificate; auditor authentication supports confidence that the audit was performed by an eligible aerospace auditor.

IAQG Authentication’s requirements state that, effective in early September 2026, only auditors authenticated by IAQG Authentication as Level 1 or Level 2 auditors are eligible to conduct IAQG third-party audits and enter those audits in OASIS. The IAQG Authentication requirements page is the current reference. When reviewing a CB or audit history after that date, ask how auditor authentication and OASIS entry requirements were met. This check supplements—not replaces—the CB accreditation check.

What AS9100 certification proves—and what it does not

Within its stated scope, certification is evidence that an independent audit found the management system conforming to the applicable 9100-series requirements at the time of certification and subsequent surveillance. IAQG describes the scheme as producing certifications that are valid, verifiable and recognized by stakeholders, with harmonization that can reduce repeated customer audits; its value statement is available at IAQG value.

Certification does not by itself prove:

  • that every part, batch or service will be defect-free;
  • that a product is approved, airworthy or accepted by a regulator;
  • that the supplier meets your drawing, specification, purchase-order or program clauses;
  • that special processes, laboratories or subcontractors have the approvals your contract names;
  • that material traceability, first-article inspection, configuration control or counterfeit-part controls are adequate for your particular job; or
  • that the supplier can meet your quantity, lead-time, packaging or delivery-performance targets.

Those questions require technical, quality and commercial due diligence in addition to checking the certificate.

How to compare two certified suppliers

When several suppliers show valid certificates, compare the evidence below instead of treating certification as a ranking.

Comparison axis Evidence to collect Decision use
Certificate scope Legal entity, sites, products, processes and exclusions Determines whether the certificate covers the work you will place
Standard fit 9100, 9110 or 9120 and the edition shown Tests whether the supplier’s certification matches its role
CB credibility IAQG participation and accreditation scope for the standard and geography Separates scheme-recognized certification from generic registration
OASIS standing Current status, validity, audit information and suspension or withdrawal indicators Shows whether the record is current when you make the decision
Customer fit Contract clauses from Boeing, Airbus or your own customer Identifies requirements beyond the baseline certificate
Operational evidence Traceability, nonconformance control, supplier management, special-process approvals and delivery history Tests execution capability that a management-system certificate cannot guarantee

Common verification mistakes and the corrective action

  • Accepting a certificate PDF without checking OASIS. Search the live record, match the status and retain the date you checked.
  • Checking the parent company instead of the contracting entity. Obtain the legal-name relationship and confirm the performing site is included.
  • Assuming a broad corporate certificate covers every plant. Match the site address and scope to the facility that will do the work.
  • Choosing the wrong series standard. Ask whether the activity is manufacturing, maintenance or distribution and confirm 9100, 9110 or 9120 accordingly.
  • Ignoring a narrow scope or exclusion. Map each outsourced process to the scope wording before issuing a purchase order.
  • Stopping at “active” status. Check the CB, audit information, validity dates and customer-specific good-standing rules as well.
  • Treating ISO 9001 as an automatic substitute. Obtain the aerospace certificate when the contract requires the 9100 series.
  • Assuming certification replaces product qualification. Run separate reviews for drawings, first article, special processes, traceability, regulatory approvals and delivery performance.
  • Failing to recheck after award. Revisit OASIS during surveillance and whenever the supplier changes sites, ownership, scope or certification body.

A practical procurement workflow

  1. Define the requirement. Write the required standard, site, processes, customer flow-downs and any special approvals into the request for quotation.
  2. Pre-screen suppliers. Ask for the legal entity, certificate, scope and OASIS identity before investing in a detailed technical review.
  3. Verify independently. Use OASIS and the CB’s scheme status; do not let the supplier’s marketing page be the sole source.
  4. Audit the gap between system and job. Review technical capability, traceability, nonconformance handling, supplier controls, special processes and capacity for your specific work.
  5. Document the decision. Save the OASIS status, certificate and scope you relied on, plus any approved deviations or corrective actions.
  6. Recheck at award and surveillance. Because certification status can change, repeat the OASIS check close to award and at the surveillance points required by your quality procedure.
  7. Escalate changes. Require notification when the supplier changes legal entity, site, scope, CB, ownership or subcontracting arrangements, then verify the revised record before continuing affected work.

Questions to put to the supplier

  • What is the exact legal entity named on the certificate, and which site will perform each contracted process?
  • Is the certification 9100, 9110 or 9120, and why does that standard match the work we are buying?
  • What products, services, processes and exclusions are in the certified scope?
  • Which CB issued the certificate, and under which IAQG accreditation does it operate?
  • What is the current OASIS status, certificate validity period and latest recorded audit?
  • Are any sites, activities or subcontractors used for our work outside the certified scope?
  • Can you provide relevant audit findings, corrective-action status and evidence for traceability, nonconformance and special-process controls?
  • Which customer or program clauses apply in addition to the 9100-series standard?

Use the answers to guide verification, not to replace it. Reconcile documents with the OASIS record and your contract before approval.

Bottom line

Trust an AS9100 claim only after the exact supplier entity, performing site, scope, standard, IAQG-scheme CB and current OASIS standing all line up with your contract. Then treat certification as evidence of a conforming aerospace management system—not as proof that every product or delivery will meet your requirements without additional technical and operational checks.
