Arena rankings measure how often people prefer one anonymous model response over another in Arena’s pairwise battles, with votes aggregated using a Bradley–Terry statistical model. A higher rank signals stronger preference in those comparisons—not a universal measure of intelligence, accuracy, or suitability for your work.
How the standard Arena ranking works
In Battle mode, Arena presents two anonymous model responses to a prompt. A participant chooses the response they prefer; Arena reveals the models’ identities after the vote. Anonymous Battle votes contribute to the official rankings, while votes in Side by Side mode do not. Arena aggregates eligible votes using a Bradley–Terry model, which estimates relative strength from paired comparisons. See Arena’s FAQ and How Arena Works.
So a leaderboard position is an estimate of how a model’s responses fare against other represented models, given the prompts, matchups, and participants in the data. Arena describes this as community judgment rather than a static benchmark. It is a relative result within that evaluation setting, not an absolute capability unit.

What a high rank does—and does not—tell you
A high position indicates that a model has won more preference comparisons, as reflected in the ranking. It does not, by itself, establish that the model is factually correct, excels at a particular professional task, is fast or inexpensive, protects your data in a particular way, or has the tools you need.

Preference and correctness can diverge: a polished or persuasive response may win a vote without its claims being true, while a cautious, qualified answer may be less preferred. Arena notes that factuality can be difficult for people to judge from a response and may not be captured by preference votes. Treat the standard ranking as evidence about perceived response quality in Arena, not as a substitute for task-specific evaluation.
How to interpret votes, preliminary labels, and rank changes
Arena’s leaderboard policy, updated September 1, 2026, says public models are tested until their ratings stabilize, with at least 1,000 votes and typically more. Scores from pre-release tests may be marked preliminary until enough fresh votes arrive after public release. The threshold is a policy description, not a guarantee that a particular rating is precise or representative. Read the Arena Leaderboard Policy for its eligibility and sampling rules.

The policy limits the public leaderboard to first-party foundation models that meet its public-availability criteria, including a defined route for certain public early releases. Arena says model sampling probabilities are typically uniform, with adjustments, and that it uses regression reweighting to keep scores unbiased despite those probabilities.

A leaderboard changes as new comparisons and models enter; a position is a snapshot of an evolving evaluation, not a permanent property of a model.

What Arena’s factuality ranking adds
Arena describes factuality as a separate, optional signal, initially available for its Text and Search Arenas through a non-default toggle. Its method samples battles for auditing, extracts claims that can reasonably be checked on the web, assigns calibrated truth probabilities, and compares the average claim correctness of the two responses. A unified factuality ranking combines factuality outcomes with preference in a composite Bradley–Terry model. Arena announced a default factuality weight of 25% for that composite view; this is distinct from the standard preference ranking. The method is described in Factuality in the Arena.
In its 2026 report, Arena said it labeled more than 2 million claims: over 1.3 million from Text Arena and 700,000 from Search Arena, across roughly 130,000 Text battles and 40,000 Search battles. Arena reported marginal true-claim rates of 87% for Text Arena and 89% for Search Arena. These figures describe Arena’s stated factuality analysis; they are not estimates of the accuracy of every model response in general use, nor do they show that the ranking captures every kind of truthfulness.

What independent research says about leaderboard limitations
The NeurIPS 2025 paper The Leaderboard Illusion examined about 2 million battles involving 243 models from 42 providers between January 2024 and April 2025. The authors reported several risks: private testing and variant selection could favor selected entries; evaluation data were distributed unevenly; exposure to Arena data improved results in their ArenaHard experiment; and silent model deprecations could undermine rating stability.

In a controlled experiment, the authors reported that raising exposure to Arena data from 0% to 70% increased ArenaHard win rate from 23.5% to 49.9%. They also reported tracking 243 public models, of which 205 were silently removed and 47 officially deprecated. These are the paper’s findings for its stated sample and period, not timeless measurements of the live leaderboard.

Arena’s September 2026 policy describes eligibility, a public record of retired models, vote thresholds, and sampling reweighting. That policy provides context for how Arena says it operates; it does not, on its own, resolve every empirical concern raised by the paper. Equally, the study’s results do not prove that every current rank is invalid. Use both the platform’s stated rules and the study’s scoped findings when judging how much weight to place on a position.
How to use Arena when choosing a model
Use the leaderboard as one input, then check the dimensions that matter for your decision. For work where errors have consequences, test the model on representative prompts and verify important claims. For other operational needs, consult current provider-specific evidence rather than inferring those properties from an Arena rank.
- Response preference: Does the model tend to produce answers people prefer in Arena’s comparisons?
- Factual accuracy: Does it reliably get the relevant facts right, including on your own tasks?
- Task performance: Can it complete the work, follow your constraints, and use required tools?
- Version and availability: Is the ranked model the version you can actually access?
- Practical fit: Does its latency, cost, and privacy or data-handling policy meet your requirements?
Arena’s own framing is apt: “Human preference and factuality, two complementary signals that tell only a partial story in isolation.”
