Zygarde Cells are collectible in-game components used to change Zygarde’s form in Pokémon GO. You encounter them while following Routes, and the game stores them in the Zygarde Cube. Under the current Route system, a discovered cell is delivered when you finish the Route; finding one is possible, not guaranteed.
What Zygarde Cells are
Pokémon GO describes Zygarde Cells as components that make up Zygarde. They are not Pokémon, candy, evolution items, or physical objects that you buy separately. They are part of Zygarde’s own in-game mechanic: collect them in the Zygarde Cube, then spend the accumulated cells to change Zygarde’s form. The official Routes page summarizes that purpose directly: “You can collect Zygarde Cells in your Zygarde Cube and use these cells to change Zygarde’s form.” Read the official Routes explanation.
The Zygarde Cube is an item inside Pokémon GO’s Item Bag. Pokémon GO’s Help Center says it gathers cells encountered while following a Route, so “Cube” does not mean a separate accessory, a toy, or a device that must be connected to your phone. Finding cells and using cells are different actions
There are two distinct parts of the mechanic. First, you follow Routes to get opportunities to discover cells. Second, you use the cells already stored in the Cube when you want to change Zygarde’s form. Completing a Route creates the collection opportunity; it does not automatically change Zygarde or spend your existing total.

How to get Zygarde Cells in Pokémon GO
1. Encounter Zygarde through its Special Research
Your starting point is the Special Research story From A to Zygarde. The launch information for Routes identifies that story as the way players encounter Zygarde. If Zygarde is not yet available on your account, look for the Special Research entry before expecting the Cube or form-change controls to be useful. Read the official Routes launch announcement.
This prerequisite matters because cells are tied to Zygarde’s mechanic. The Route feature is not a general-purpose item hunt in which every player receives cells regardless of whether the Zygarde content has been introduced to the account.
2. Open the Nearby menu and choose a Route
From the Pokémon GO map, open the Nearby menu and select the Routes tab. The Routes page lists nearby Routes that you can inspect and follow. Pokémon GO has also described improvements that make more Routes visible from Nearby, so check this tab rather than relying only on a Route you already know. The exact list depends on what is available around your current location and on the game’s live service.
Choose a Route that you can complete safely. A Route is a real-world walking path in the game, so its distance, endpoint, terrain, and local access affect whether finishing it is practical. Do not use Pokémon GO while driving, cycling in traffic, or crossing roads without paying attention to your surroundings.

3. Follow the Route all the way to its endpoint
Start the selected Route and follow its path in the app. The important change in the current system is what happens to a cell that appears during this process. You no longer need to tap a cell on the map to collect it. If the game discovers a cell while you are following the Route, it awards that cell when you complete the Route.
Continue until Pokémon GO recognizes the Route as finished. Stopping partway through does not count as completing it, and leaving the path may prevent the app from recording the expected progress. The completion screen is the point at which a discovered cell is delivered under the current rules.
4. Check the Zygarde Cube after completion
Open the Zygarde Cube’s details to verify your running total. The official Routes feature page specifically identifies the Cube details as the place where the collected-cell count appears. This is the most reliable way to confirm whether a completed Route added a cell, rather than trying to infer the result from a map animation or from memory.

If the number did not increase, that does not by itself indicate a broken account or a lost reward. Pokémon GO says a cell may not be found on every Route. First confirm that the Route was marked complete, then check the Cube details again.

5. Use the accumulated cells to change Zygarde’s form
When you have enough cells for an available form change, use the form-change controls associated with Zygarde. The cells are consumed for that change; they are not ordinary inventory items that can be traded to another Pokémon. Because the official pages cited here do not state the number required for each form, do not rely on an uncited fixed total. The game’s own form-change screen is the appropriate place to see whether your current balance meets its requirement.
What changed in the October 2026 update
Pokémon GO’s October 2026 gameplay and quality-of-life update changed the collection interaction. Before this change, a player who saw a cell on the map had to collect it there. Under the current system, cells discovered on a Route are awarded as a reward when that Route is completed. The update describes this as a change in delivery, not as a new kind of cell. The discovery chance did not become a guarantee
The same update says the probability of finding Zygarde Cells stays the same and that you still may not find one on every Route. Pokémon GO does not publish a numeric rate in that announcement. That means an unsuccessful Route is consistent with the stated mechanic; it is not evidence that every Route should have produced a cell.

- You can concentrate on completing the Route instead of trying to tap a moving or easy-to-miss object on the map.
- You should judge the result after the Route completion reward appears, not while you are still walking.
- A completed Route can still yield no cell because discovery remains probabilistic and no official percentage is supplied.
- Older guides that tell you to tap a cell during the walk may describe the former interaction and should not be treated as the current procedure.
This update is a statement about the game state in October 2026. Pokémon GO is an online service, so a later update could change the interface, timing, or eligibility rules. If the labels on your screen differ, use the in-app Route completion and Cube details as the immediate source of truth.

How to make Route sessions easier to manage
Plan around completion, not a guaranteed payout
Because the cell chance is not guaranteed, choose Routes you can realistically finish rather than assuming a longer or more difficult path must pay more. A short, accessible Route that you complete is a more dependable way to create an attempt than a Route you abandon halfway through.
Use Nearby to find additional opportunities
Check the Routes tab in Nearby for the current local list. If one Route produces no cell, another Route gives you another attempt, but the official material does not establish that any particular Route type, distance, direction, or location has a higher cell probability. Avoid presenting community observations as an official rate or rule.
Verify the account state after each attempt
- Confirm that the Route status changed to completed.
- Wait for the completion reward to resolve.
- Open the Zygarde Cube details.
- Compare the displayed count with the number you recorded before starting.
This sequence separates three events that are easy to confuse: walking the path, receiving a discovered-cell reward, and spending cells on a form change.
Keep safety ahead of collection
Routes are intended to be followed while exploring, but cell collection is never a reason to use the app unsafely. Stop in a safe place before checking the map or item details, obey local pedestrian rules, and do not play while driving. If a Route crosses a dangerous area, requires trespassing, or cannot be completed safely, choose a different Route or leave it unfinished.

What you need—and what you do not need
- A Pokémon GO account with access to the Zygarde content: Zygarde is encountered through the From A to Zygarde Special Research story.
- The Pokémon GO app and a listed Route: Cells are collected through the in-game Routes feature and the Nearby menu.
- A way to reach the Route endpoint safely: The current reward is tied to Route completion.
- The Zygarde Cube: It is an in-game Item Bag item that stores the running count.
- No physical accessory: The Cube is not a retail device, and the cited Help Center description does not require external hardware.
- No purchase of physical cells: The official mechanic describes discovering cells on Routes, not buying them as a separate product.
Common problems and how to interpret them
“I finished a Route but received no cell.”
First check whether the Route was actually marked complete and then inspect the Cube details. If completion is recorded but the count is unchanged, the most likely explanation under the published rules is that no cell was discovered. The October 2026 update explicitly warns that a cell may not appear on every Route.
“I cannot find the cell on the map.”
That is expected under the current interaction. A discovered cell is no longer something you must tap on the map; it is delivered at Route completion. Finish the Route and check the reward and Cube details instead.
“I cannot see any Routes.”
Open Nearby and select Routes to view the local list. Route availability depends on the area and the live game service. If no suitable Route appears, the absence of a listing is different from a cell-discovery failure: you need an available Route before you can make a collection attempt.

“My total changed after I changed Zygarde’s form.”
Form changes use cells, so a lower Cube balance after a successful change is consistent with the mechanic. Check the form-change confirmation and the Cube details rather than treating the reduced total as a missing Route reward.
How many cells are needed for each form?
The official sources cited for this explainer establish that cells are used to change Zygarde’s form, but they do not publish the exact cell threshold for each form change. For that reason, a fixed number should not be presented as an official requirement here. Thresholds can also be affected by later balancing or interface changes.
When you are ready to make a change, use the requirement shown in your current Zygarde form-change screen. That value is tied to the account and game version you are actually using. If a guide elsewhere lists a number, verify that it identifies the same Pokémon GO version and is supported by an authoritative current source before relying on it.
