Vision-language models (VLMs) process visual input—such as images or video—alongside text, so a person can ask a question about what is shown and receive a language response. Their apparent “understanding” describes performance on particular tasks; it does not mean human-like perception or guarantee a correct answer.
What is a vision-language model?
A VLM is a generative AI system designed to work with both visual information and language. Unlike a text-only language model, which receives and generates text, a VLM can use an image or video as part of the information it responds to. NVIDIA describes VLMs as multimodal models that process video, images, and text, though that is the vendor’s description rather than a formal standards definition (NVIDIA’s VLM glossary).
For example, you might provide a photograph and ask what objects are visible, share a scanned page and ask it to find a date, or provide video frames and ask what changed. These are possible task types, not a promise that any particular model will handle them reliably.

Many VLMs use three components. A useful analogy is a short handoff between specialists: one makes visual notes, another translates the notes into a format the language system can use, and the language system combines those notes with your question to write a response. The analogy describes the flow of information, not human-like seeing or reasoning.

1. Vision encoder: turns visual input into a representation
The vision encoder processes an image—or, in a video-capable system, visual information from video—and converts it into a representation the rest of the model can work with. It does not pass an ordinary photograph directly to the language model as a person would view it.
2. Projector or alignment layer: connects visual and language representations
A projector, connector, or alignment layer translates the visual representation into a form the language model can use. This handoff matters: information can be compressed or lost as visual input is converted into a representation that fits the language model’s processing.

3. Language model: responds using the image and the prompt
The language model generates an answer conditioned on both the visual representation and the user’s words. A common training approach combines pretraining on image-and-text material with supervised fine-tuning on examples of instructions and desired responses. This is a common architectural pattern, not the only way to build a VLM; Meta AI’s introduction discusses both the translation challenge and reliability concerns (Meta AI’s introduction to vision-language modeling).

- Answering questions about a photograph, such as identifying visible objects or summarizing a scene.
- Finding or reading information in a photographed document.
- Comparing two images and describing visible differences.
- Interpreting charts or diagrams.
- Summarizing image sequences or describing changes between video frames.
- Following instructions that depend on visual information.
These examples describe capabilities people may test, not reliable outcomes guaranteed across all VLMs. Image quality, model design, training, and task difficulty all affect results.
How is a VLM different from a text-only language model?
A text-only language model receives text rather than visual input. A VLM extends the interaction to include images or, for some systems, video. Both can generate language, but a VLM’s answer can be conditioned on visual information as well as a written prompt. The visual input must still be encoded and connected to the language model, so adding image support does not make the system infallible or give it human perception.

What are the limitations of vision-language models?
Small details and image handling can change what the model detects
Images may be downsampled or cropped before processing, making small text or details harder to detect. A model’s ability to read a document or notice a small object can therefore depend on how the image is prepared and what resolution or detail the system retains.

Counting, location, and spatial relationships can be difficult
VLMs may describe a scene fluently while making mistakes about how many objects appear, where an object is, or how items are arranged. A 2025 ACL paper, Response Wide Shut? Surprising Observations in Basic Vision Language Model Capabilities, reports weaknesses on basic visual tasks including object recognition, counting, and spatial arrangement among the models and tasks it studied. It also examines information loss between model components; its findings should not be read as proof that every current VLM fails every such task (ACL 2025 paper).

Long videos may exceed the model’s usable context
Video systems may process only a limited selection or amount of visual information. If relevant events occur outside the frames or context considered, a summary or answer can miss them. NVIDIA identifies long-context video understanding and precise spatial understanding as persistent challenges (NVIDIA’s VLM overview).
A confident-sounding answer can still be wrong
Generated descriptions and answers are fallible. For decisions where errors matter, inspect the original image or video and verify the response against the source or an appropriate specialist workflow rather than treating the model’s wording as proof.
How should you evaluate a VLM?
Test the job you actually need done. A score on one benchmark does not establish that a model will work for a different task, image type, or workflow. Useful questions include:

- Detail: Does it retain enough resolution to read small text or identify small objects in your images?
- Documents and charts: Can it find the fields, labels, or values you need, and can you verify them against the original?
- Counting and location: Does it give correct counts and describe object positions accurately on representative examples?
- Video context: How much of a clip can it consider, and does it catch changes that occur across the clip?
- Robustness: Do answers hold up when you change the background, wording, or image framing?
- Deployment constraints: Does the system fit your requirements for processing, access, and handling the input data?
Benchmarks can help you find task-specific evaluations, but they are not interchangeable universal measures. NVIDIA lists benchmarks such as MMMU, Video-MME, MathVista, ChartQA, and DocVQA, which address different tasks; a result on one is not a guarantee for an individual use case (NVIDIA’s benchmark overview).
