TSMC combines a leading role in advanced chip manufacturing with significant risks tied to geopolitics, customer concentration, semiconductor cycles, technology execution and the reliability of its operations. Its factories require large, ongoing investments, so a slowdown can hurt margins even if the company remains technologically important. TSMC reported strong 2025 results and issued an upbeat 2026 outlook, but neither removes those exposures or establishes whether the stock is attractively valued.
How to think about TSMC’s investment risks
TSMC is a semiconductor foundry: it manufactures chips designed by other companies. That business model gives it exposure to customers’ product plans and to demand across several end markets, while requiring it to fund complex manufacturing facilities and technology development. The risks are therefore not limited to whether customers want more chips. They also include where production takes place, whether new processes work as planned, how efficiently factories run, and what it costs to build and operate capacity.
A company disclosure identifies possible exposures; it does not say how likely a severe event is, predict the stock’s return, or determine fair value. The risks below are best used as a checklist of ways results or investor expectations could weaken. The disclosures do not establish a probability for geopolitical events, and there is no current share price or valuation analysis here with which to reach a buy-or-sell conclusion.
What TSMC’s recent results and outlook do—and do not—show
TSMC’s 2025 results demonstrate the scale of its recent growth, not a guarantee that the same growth will continue. The company reported consolidated revenue of NT$3,809.05 billion for 2025, up 31.6% from 2024, net income of NT$1,717.88 billion, and diluted earnings per share of NT$66.26. Its 2025 annual report described robust AI demand, and 2-nanometer technology entered high-volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2025.

On January 15, 2026, management forecast close to 30% revenue growth for 2026 in U.S.-dollar terms and said it expected a capital budget of US$52 billion to US$56 billion. These are management expectations, not realized results; the outlook may have changed after that call. Even if demand remains strong, the expansion needed to serve it can raise costs before new capacity reaches efficient utilization.

Geopolitical and trade exposure
TSMC identifies political stability in its local region and geopolitical tensions as risks that could cause actual results to differ from forward-looking statements. Its risk-management disclosures describe ways geopolitical tension and economic fragmentation could disrupt supply chains, reduce market access, increase costs or investment uncertainty, and complicate access to technology and regulatory compliance. Trade disputes, export controls, tariffs and conflict are among the possible sources of disruption.
For investors, the significance is that restrictions or disruption could affect TSMC’s ability to produce, ship or sell products, and could affect customers’ ability to use particular technologies. The exposure is contingent: TSMC’s disclosures do not establish that a conflict will occur or provide a probability for one. It is more accurate to treat geopolitics as a material scenario to assess than as a forecast.

Customer concentration: a few buyers account for much of revenue
TSMC serves hundreds of customers, but a large portion of its revenue comes from its biggest accounts. The ten largest customers represented approximately 78% of 2025 net revenue. A major customer that buys less, changes its product plans or shifts manufacturing choices could therefore have a meaningful effect on TSMC’s results. Customer exposure can also interact with product cycles, customer consolidation and export restrictions.

These figures are from TSMC’s 2026 annual-report disclosures. They show two different aspects of concentration: the largest customer’s share declined from 25% to 19% between 2023 and 2025, while the top ten’s combined share rose from about 70% to 78%. The falling share of the single biggest customer should not be read by itself as proof that revenue is broadly diversified.
Demand cycles, factory utilization and pricing
Semiconductor demand can rise and fall with conditions in high-performance computing, smartphones, the Internet of Things, automotive and digital consumer electronics. TSMC identifies a substantial decrease in demand across these markets as a potential source of lower revenue. Strong demand in one area can support growth, but it does not ensure that all end markets will remain strong or that customers will keep ordering at the same pace.

Factories also create a fixed-cost exposure. Building and equipping fabs takes substantial investment, and much of the manufacturing cost base does not fall in step with output. If orders weaken and utilization falls, fewer wafers may absorb those costs, putting pressure on margins. Pricing pressure or industry overcapacity can add to the effect, while competition can constrain revenue or profitability.

This helps explain why a demand slowdown can matter even if TSMC remains an important supplier. Investors should distinguish the question “Is there demand for chips?” from “Will demand support high utilization, pricing and returns on the capacity being built?” TSMC’s reported robust AI demand in 2025 is relevant context, but it does not establish that AI-related demand or broader chip growth will persist at the same pace.
Technology leadership, yields and expansion execution
TSMC identifies uncertainty in technology development, product quality and yield, as well as its ability to maintain technology leadership, as risks. New manufacturing processes must deliver reliable production at commercial scale. A technology can enter high-volume manufacturing, as TSMC said 2-nanometer did in the fourth quarter of 2025, while the ramp still carries execution and cost risks.

Capacity investment is both a growth opportunity and a financial commitment. Advanced-node development and expansion can help TSMC serve future demand and remain competitive, but construction, equipment, depreciation and early-stage production costs must be borne before a new facility or process has reached efficient output. The return depends on execution, demand, yields, utilization and the economics of the resulting capacity—not simply on the amount spent.
Management’s January 15, 2026 expectations illustrate the near-term margin tradeoff. TSMC expected initial N2 ramp-up to dilute gross margin by 2% to 3% for full-year 2026. It also expected overseas fab ramp-up to dilute gross margin by 2% to 3% in early stages, widening to 3% to 4% in later stages. Those are management expectations, not guaranteed outcomes or realized results. If costs rise, yields improve more slowly than planned, or demand does not absorb new capacity, the economics of expansion could be less favorable.
Operational, supply-chain, cyber and utility disruptions
TSMC’s disclosures list earthquakes, typhoons, droughts, utility interruptions, cyberattacks, supply-chain disruptions, labor issues, and equipment or facility failures as possible operational disruptions. These risks matter because advanced chip manufacturing depends on functioning sites, specialized equipment, reliable suppliers and uninterrupted utilities. A serious cyberattack could disrupt production or compromise sensitive information, according to the company’s annual report.

Not every incident would have the same effect, and the disclosures do not quantify the probability or financial impact of each one. An investor can nevertheless recognize the common mechanism: a disruption that prevents a facility or critical supplier from operating normally may affect production, delivery schedules, costs or customer confidence. Power and other utilities also matter both as essential inputs and as potential sources of higher operating costs when supplies are constrained or prices rise.
Currency, inflation, financing and other financial exposures
TSMC lists foreign-exchange movements, interest rates, inflation, taxation, external financing and high-risk investments among its risk-management areas. The company operates across different currencies, so exchange-rate changes can affect reported results and costs. On the January 15, 2026 earnings call, management said it does not control foreign-exchange rates and recognized potential tariff effects and rising component prices.
These disclosures identify exposures, not a direction or forecast for future currency movements. Their effect will depend on the currencies involved, operating conditions, tax treatment and financing needs. A reader should not infer from the stated risks alone that a particular exchange rate, interest-rate move or tariff will occur.
A practical checklist for assessing the risks
When reviewing TSMC as an investment, separate company execution from external conditions and from the stock’s price. The following questions help make that distinction without treating any single risk as a prediction:
- Geopolitics and market access: What events could affect production, technology access, shipping or customer access to products, and what is known versus merely possible?
- Customer dependence: How are the largest-customer and top-ten revenue shares changing, and could the product plans of large accounts become less supportive?
- Demand and utilization: Are key end markets supporting orders and factory use, or could slower demand and pricing pressure leave costly capacity underused?
- Technology and spending: Is new capacity reaching planned production and yield, and are margin effects from ramps consistent with management’s stated expectations?
- Resilience: Could site, supplier, utility, labor or cyber disruptions interrupt manufacturing or delivery?
- Financial exposure: How might currencies, inflation, taxes, interest rates or financing conditions affect costs and reported results?
- Valuation: What expectations are already reflected in the share price? The company disclosures and financial figures above do not establish whether the stock is cheap or expensive; that requires current market data and comparable valuation analysis.
TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei wrote in the 2025 annual report, “As a Foundry, our biggest responsibility is to support our customers with the most advanced technologies and necessary capacity to unleash their innovations.” That statement describes the company’s strategy and role as management presents them; it is not independent evidence that the investment is low risk.
