shadPS4’s published minimums are a CPU with at least 4 cores and 6 threads, a clock speed above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 support; a GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM, Vulkan 1.3, and the VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor extensions; 8GB or more of RAM; and Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, or macOS 26. These are minimum system requirements—not a guarantee that a particular PS4 game will launch or run smoothly.
shadPS4 minimum PC requirements
The shadPS4 Quick Start, edited September 30, 2026, lists requirements across four areas. A computer must meet the CPU, GPU, memory, and operating-system requirements together; satisfying only one or two does not meet the full checklist. See the official Quick Start.

The official guide does not give a separate recommended RAM figure or a recommended PC tier. Its figures should therefore be treated as the published floor, not as a performance target.

Read the table as a combined compatibility checklist, not as a shopping list in which one strong part can compensate for another part that falls short. More VRAM does not replace a missing Vulkan extension, and a fast CPU does not make an unsupported operating system supported. Likewise, the minimum does not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, or level of stability. The project’s documentation does not publish a universal performance target for every game.

How to check whether your CPU qualifies
Do not judge the processor only by its advertised clock speed or by calling it a “quad-core.” The listed minimum combines at least 4 cores, at least 6 threads, a clock above 2.5 GHz, and support for the x86-64-v3 instruction-set baseline. A CPU can meet the core count and still fail another part of the requirement. Check the precise processor model against all four criteria rather than assuming that a newer-sounding product name, high boost clock, or four-core configuration settles the question.
The Quick Start gives generation examples: Intel Haswell or newer, AMD Excavator or newer, and Apple M1 or newer when using Rosetta 2. These examples help narrow down which processors may qualify, but they do not replace checking the full listed requirements, particularly for processors whose model names or configurations are unclear. “At least 4 cores” is not the whole CPU requirement: the thread count, clock threshold, and x86-64-v3 baseline matter too.
For an Apple computer, the CPU example is tied to the rest of the platform requirement: the guide names Apple M1 or newer using Rosetta 2, while the repository says Intel Macs are unsupported. Do not treat an Intel Mac as meeting the requirement simply because it has enough cores or an adequate clock. The official Quick Start is the source for these CPU criteria: shadPS4 Quick Start.
How to check whether your GPU qualifies
VRAM capacity alone is not enough. The GPU must have at least 2GB of VRAM and support Vulkan 1.3, including both required extensions: VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor. A card’s brand or model name by itself does not establish that its installed driver exposes all of these capabilities. The requirements are a combination of memory capacity and graphics API support.

Use this sequence when checking a computer you already own:
- Identify the exact GPU that shadPS4 will use, especially if the computer has both integrated and discrete graphics. A PC may contain more than one graphics adapter, so do not assume that the card you think of as the main GPU is the only one relevant to the driver warning.
- Check the GPU and driver specifications for at least 2GB of VRAM and Vulkan 1.3 support. The listed VRAM figure is a minimum; the official materials do not say that a particular higher capacity guarantees better compatibility.
- Verify that the driver supports both
VK_KHR_swapchainandVK_KHR_push_descriptor. If either extension is absent, the published minimum is not met, even if the GPU has enough VRAM and supports Vulkan. - Update graphics drivers and check every GPU in the system, including integrated graphics. The Quick Start warns that an outdated driver for another installed graphics card can interfere.
Use the current vendor or driver documentation for the specific GPU to verify support; the shadPS4 requirements do not endorse particular GPU models. There is no model-by-model comparison or benchmark in the official material reviewed, so it would be misleading to recommend a card solely because its name or VRAM figure sounds suitable. If your current adapter fails a requirement, the useful comparison is capability against capability: VRAM, Vulkan version, and both extensions.
RAM and operating-system requirements
The minimum memory listed is 8GB of RAM. The current Quick Start does not state a higher recommended amount, so it does not support claiming that a specific larger capacity is necessary or sufficient for a given game. If you are comparing two PCs, use 8GB as the published memory floor, but do not infer from that figure that every game will work on a machine with 8GB or that adding memory will solve a compatibility issue.

These platform names are the published minimum examples, not a ranking of which operating system or computer type works best. The sources do not provide a performance comparison between Windows, Ubuntu, and macOS, nor do they name additional supported minimum versions here. For installation, follow the project’s current instructions for the platform you use.
Meeting the minimums does not establish game compatibility
shadPS4 is an early PlayStation 4 emulator, and compatibility is game-specific. The project documentation warns that many games do not work and that titles which do work may still have emulation issues. The repository similarly says not to expect a flawless experience. A computer that meets every listed minimum may still be unable to run the game you want, or may not run it smoothly. The official documentation provides no per-game performance guarantee, frame-rate target, or universal playable-PC specification.
Before relying on a particular title, check the project’s compatibility list. This is a separate check from your PC specifications: first establish whether the game is currently reported as working, then compare your computer to the hardware and operating-system floor. The compatibility status can change as the emulator develops, so check the current entry rather than treating an older result as permanent. Passing the hardware checklist does not turn an incompatible title into a compatible one.
The official project warning is direct: “shadPS4 is still early in development. Many games do not work, and the few that do work usually face various emulation issues.” That is why it is better to answer “Will my PC run shadPS4?” in two parts: does the system meet the published minimums, and is the specific game currently supported well enough for your expectations? The requirements answer only the first part.

Setup prerequisites and game files
The Quick Start directs users to the QtLauncher for installation; core releases are also available as a command-line tool. On Windows, QtLauncher requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2022. That is a launcher prerequisite, not an extra hardware requirement, but Windows users should account for it when following the setup guide. Consult the official setup instructions for current installation steps rather than relying on a third-party checklist that may have become outdated.
For games, updates, and DLC, the setup guide says files must be dumped from your own copy. Having a compatible PC and installing the emulator are not by themselves enough to provide game content. Keep the source of those files aligned with the guide’s instruction: use dumps from your own copy. This article does not extend that statement into broader legal advice.
Controllers are optional rather than part of the PC requirements. The project repository says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box, but a controller does not affect whether the CPU, GPU, memory, and operating system meet the minimums. Consider one only as an input option after checking the actual system requirements and title compatibility.

A practical checklist before installing
- CPU: 4 or more cores, 6 or more threads, above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 support. Intel Haswell or newer, AMD Excavator or newer, and Apple M1 or newer with Rosetta 2 are the guide’s examples.
- GPU: At least 2GB VRAM, Vulkan 1.3, and both required Vulkan extensions:
VK_KHR_swapchainandVK_KHR_push_descriptor. - Drivers: Current drivers for all installed graphics adapters, including integrated graphics; an outdated driver for another adapter can interfere.
- Memory: At least 8GB RAM. No higher recommended amount is specified in the current guide.
- Operating system: Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, or macOS 26. For Mac, the repository specifies macOS 26.0 or newer and does not support Intel Macs.
- Launcher: Use the QtLauncher setup instructions; on Windows, Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 is a prerequisite for QtLauncher. Core releases are also available as a command-line tool.
- Game: Check the title’s entry in the compatibility list separately from the hardware checklist. The game, updates, and DLC must be dumped from your own copy.
If one item is unclear, resolve that specific item before buying hardware or assuming the system is ready. In particular, do not choose a GPU by VRAM alone: confirm Vulkan 1.3 and the two named extensions for the relevant GPU and driver. If all items check out, that means the PC meets the documented minimum—not that every game is guaranteed to work.
