The Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies, are an annual satirical film-awards project focused on what its organizers consider the year’s worst cinematic achievements. They are designed as a comic counterpoint to the Oscars, not as an official industry standard or an objective measurement of film quality.
For the 45th annual awards, the organization said it emailed nominating ballots to 1,202 members—described as movie buffs, film critics and journalists in 49 U.S. states and about two dozen foreign countries. Those voters selected five contenders in each of nine categories. Nominees were announced first; members then voted on a final ballot to determine the winners. The organization does not publish a complete vote-counting or independent-audit method, so individual totals and margins are not publicly established.
What are the Razzies?
The Golden Raspberry Awards use humor, exaggeration and deliberately insulting category names to parody the conventions of major film awards. Their official description presents them as an honor for the “worst” in contemporary cinema and as a counterbalance to the Oscars. In practice, a Razzie nomination is a satirical judgment by the voting membership, not a certified finding that a film, performance or screenplay is objectively the year’s poorest.

The awards can target a whole movie, an individual performance, a director, a screenplay or a particular combination of actors. The tone is intentionally comic: category labels and nomination write-ups are part of the joke, and the choices can reflect a film’s high-profile failure, implausible creative decisions or unusually conspicuous disappointment.
Because the Razzies are an independent awards project rather than a guild, government body or standards organization, their selections do not carry the same institutional meaning as an industry award. Their significance is cultural and satirical: a nomination gives critics and audiences a shorthand for a notorious movie misfire, while a “win” often becomes a piece of entertainment trivia.
Why were the Golden Raspberry Awards created?
TIME’s January 14, 2015 background article reported a recollection from co-founder John Wilson that the first presentation was an improvised living-room event held after the Oscars broadcast. Wilson explained: “I was looking for something to do when the show was over, because in L.A. they end by 10 p.m.” That anecdote describes the origin story as a post-Oscars joke that grew into a recurring awards project; it is not a formal procedural rule or a founding charter.
The contrast with the Oscars remains central to the concept. Conventional awards celebrate achievement, while the Razzies turn the same ceremony format toward embarrassment and failure. The parody works because nominees, categories and winner announcements resemble familiar awards language while openly rejecting the idea that every nominated work deserves praise.

The clearest published description comes from the Golden Raspberry Awards’ announcement for the 45th awards. It states that results were determined by emailing ballots to 1,202 Razzie members, identified as movie buffs, film critics and journalists from 49 U.S. states and about two dozen foreign countries. Each voter selected five top contenders in each of nine categories.
The process has two distinct stages. A person is a nominee only after the nominating round and the organization’s announcement. Winners are chosen later through a final vote. Treating the two ballots as the same step obscures how the awards work.
- Membership and ballot access: Members receive online nominating and final ballots. The organization’s membership information says members have voting rights in deciding both nominees and winners and asks them to provide an email address suitable for those ballots.
- Nominating ballot: Members choose contenders in the categories offered for that award cycle. For the 45th awards, the instructions called for five selections in each of nine categories.
- Nominee announcement: The organization publishes the resulting nominee list. This is the point at which a film or performer becomes an official Razzie nominee for that ceremony.
- Final ballot: Members vote among the announced nominees. The final result determines the Razzie “winners.”
No retrieved official release supplies a permanent formula for weighting ballots, a public vote total, a statistical margin, or an independent audit. It is therefore accurate to say that members choose nominees and winners, but not to claim that a public committee, industry guild or audited count makes the selections.
Who votes for the Razzie Awards?
Voting is conducted by Razzie members. The organization’s 45th-awards announcement characterized that group as movie buffs, film critics and journalists. The description does not establish that every voter belongs to a professional critics’ association, works in the film industry or follows a single eligibility standard.

Membership information says members can vote on nominees and winners through online ballots. The published pages also advertise paid membership and branded merchandise, but those offers do not by themselves establish how many members vote in a particular round, what proportion returns a ballot or whether all members participate in every category.
Membership totals are snapshots of individual ceremonies, not a permanent electorate. The 1,202 figure belongs to the 45th awards, while an earlier official announcement gave a different total for the 40th awards.
What categories do the Razzies use?
Categories can be renamed, added or removed. The following list is specifically the nine-category slate reported for the 45th awards, not a universal rulebook:
| 45th-awards category | What it targets |
|---|---|
| Worst Picture | The film considered the year’s most conspicuous overall failure by the voters. |
| Worst Actor | A male performance selected for satirical criticism. |
| Worst Actress | A female performance selected for satirical criticism. |
| Worst Supporting Actor | A supporting male performance. |
| Worst Supporting Actress | A supporting female performance. |
| Worst Director | Direction associated with a nominated film. |
| Worst Screen Combo | A pairing or combination of performers, characters or other on-screen elements presented as a particularly poor match. |
| Worst Prequel/Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel | A follow-up, remake or derivative work judged especially unsuccessful. |
| Worst Screenplay | The writing of a nominated film. |
Earlier ceremonies demonstrate why year labels matter. The official 2020 announcement for the 40th awards also described nine categories and five selections per category, but it identified “Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property” as a new category for films released in 2019. That label does not appear in the 45th-awards list above. A category mentioned in one year should not be treated as a standing category for every ceremony.

The published figures show variation rather than a fixed membership model:
| Award cycle | Members reported | Selections requested | Categories described |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40th awards (2020 announcement) | 1,090 | Five contenders per category | Nine |
| 45th awards (2025 announcement) | 1,202 | Five contenders per category | Nine |
The two rows refer to different ceremonies and should not be combined into a single current count. The later announcement does not say that all 1,202 members returned ballots, nor does it disclose how many votes each contender received.
Does a Razzie nomination mean a movie is objectively bad?
No. The awards are intentionally subjective and comedic. A nomination reflects the judgment of participating members within a satirical format. It can signal that a movie became a widely recognized disappointment, but it is not a scientific rating, a standardized quality score or proof that every viewer will dislike the work.
The category itself shapes the joke. A film may be recognized for a performance even if other elements were well received, or for a sequel’s relationship to an earlier movie rather than for every aspect of its production. “Worst” is the organization’s framing, not an independently verified measurement.
Rank #4
Has the organization ever corrected a nomination?
Yes. The official archive for the 43rd awards records a Worst Actress award for the organization itself, labeled “Worst Actress Nominations Blunder,” after a nomination was rescinded. This is evidence that the process has experienced a public correction and that the Razzies have acknowledged the error in their own award record.
That episode should not be expanded into a claim that the organization operates a general appeals court or a permanent correction code. The published material does not establish a standing appeals system, a detailed rulebook for rescinding nominations or a standard timetable for correcting mistakes. The safe conclusion is narrower: at least one nomination problem was acknowledged and incorporated into the awards’ historical record.
What is known—and not known—about counting the votes?
The public announcements establish the electorate’s general identity, the use of emailed ballots and the number of contenders requested in particular years. They do not establish several details readers might expect from a formal election:
- The exact number of ballots returned in each category.
- The vote total or percentage received by each nominee.
- The size of any winning margin.
- Whether ties are resolved by a published secondary rule.
- Whether an independent auditor verifies the count.
- A single permanent eligibility and tabulation rulebook covering every ceremony.
Those omissions do not prevent an accurate description of the process. They do mean that articles should avoid presenting the results as statistically audited rankings or implying precision that the organization has not published.
How should readers interpret a Razzie result?
Read it as satire first
The humor is part of the award, not decoration added after a neutral evaluation. A title such as Worst Screen Combo or Worst Prequel/Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel signals that the category is built for comic commentary as well as comparison.

Check the ceremony year
Membership counts and category lineups change. “1,202 members” is a statement about the 45th awards, while “1,090 members” describes the 40th-awards announcement in 2020. Dates should stay attached whenever those figures are quoted.
Separate nomination from victory
A nomination means the work survived the member nominating ballot and appeared on the published list. A win means it received the most support on the later final ballot, under a counting process whose detailed totals are not publicly reported in the cited announcements.
Allow for corrections
The 43rd-awards “Worst Actress Nominations Blunder” entry shows that an announced nomination can be challenged or withdrawn. The archive’s self-award is useful context when evaluating claims that every Razzie result is final, error-free or beyond dispute.
Why do the Razzies still attract attention?
The format turns awards-season language inside out. A high-profile nomination can become a news hook, a punchline or a prompt for viewers to revisit a film that generated unusual backlash. Because the awards are not trying to provide a neutral industry ranking, their appeal comes from the combination of recognizable names, deliberately sharp categories and a ritual familiar from mainstream awards shows.
That appeal also explains why the process should be described precisely. The Razzies’ authority is the authority of a satirical membership vote. It rests on the organization’s chosen categories and participants, not on a claim to represent every critic, filmmaker or moviegoer.
Bottom line
The Golden Raspberry Awards are annual satirical film awards for what their organizers characterize as the worst achievements in cinema. Members submit online nominations, the organization announces the nominees, and members vote again on a final ballot. For the 45th awards, the published process involved 1,202 members choosing five contenders in each of nine categories; an earlier 2020 announcement cited 1,090 members and the same five-in-nine structure. Those numbers and categories are ceremony-specific, and the available announcements do not provide audited totals or a detailed permanent counting rule.
